— andy In a good bit of timing that I don't question at all, the USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) is being christened at General Dynamics' Bath, Maine shipyard today.

As all readers of this Smart Military Blog™ know, Lt. Michael P. Murphy was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor from the war in Afghanistan.
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as the leader of a special reconnaissance element with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Afghanistan on 27 and 28 June 2005. While leading a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader, Lieutenant Murphy demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. On 28 June 2005, operating in an extremely rugged enemy-controlled area, Lieutenant Murphy's team was discovered by anti-coalition militia sympathizers, who revealed their position to Taliban fighters. As a result, between 30 and 40 enemy fighters besieged his four-member team. Demonstrating exceptional resolve, Lieutenant Murphy valiantly led his men in engaging the large enemy force. The ensuing fierce firefight resulted in numerous enemy casualties, as well as the wounding of all four members of the team. Ignoring his own wounds and demonstrating exceptional composure, Lieutenant Murphy continued to lead and encourage his men. When the primary communicator fell mortally wounded, Lieutenant Murphy repeatedly attempted to call for assistance for his beleaguered teammates. Realizing the impossibility of communicating in the extreme terrain, and in the face of almost certain death, he fought his way into open terrain to gain a better position to transmit a call. This deliberate, heroic act deprived him of cover, exposing him to direct enemy fire. Finally achieving contact with his Headquarters, Lieutenant Murphy maintained his exposed position while he provided his location and requested immediate support for his team. In his final act of bravery, he continued to engage the enemy until he was mortally wounded, gallantly giving his life for his country and for the cause of freedom. By his selfless leadership, courageous actions, and extraordinary devotion to duty, Lieutenant Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Yeah ... I'm all broken up that we didn't take bin Laden alive and put him on trial. SEAL Team 6 visited the justice upon him that he deserved for cutting short the lives of good men like Michael Murphy and thousands of others.
Update: There's a good piece in today's Wall Street Journal by Lt. Cmdr. Eric Greitens, who was in the same BUD/S class with two of the SEALs lost in Operation Red Wing along with Lt. Murphy.
Turning on my cellphone last Sunday, I got a text message with the incredible news: "OBL is dead. Hoo Yah!" Within minutes, a tidal wave of messages followed from fellow Navy SEALs and other military and nonmilitary friends. My own thoughts went back to James Suh and Matt Axelson ("Axe"), two members of my own SEAL training class. When Axe was pinned down by the Taliban in a firefight in Afghanistan in June 2005, Suh boarded a helicopter to fly in for a rescue mission. The helicopter was shot down that day and both men died. I thought to myself: Axe, Suh, they got him.

But, after Kitchener slaughtered the jihadists of the day at the Battle of Omdurman in 1897, he made a point of digging up their leader the Mahdi, chopping off his head and keeping it as a souvenir.

I wish the WH idiots would STFU about
how important they are, what unit did the op, and about all
the neat intel that was obtained in this raid.
Generally, the zero
just said “Go!” to his professional military (that his left wing
goons have not managed to destroy yet) to conduct an operation months
in the planning and training. That was a good call, but I don't
think it was made as a matter of consciousness but was political in
nature. It did get the right result but that's it.
I am not
a professional in the intel business, but it seems reasonable that
the development of actionable intel is the painstaking connection of
the dots (which involves identifying the dots that aren't really in
the pattern) and that takes time. It would be far better to
have the guys generating the dots wondering what new dots we just
discovered that trumpeting our apparent access to new dots.
As a
citizen and patriot, I recognize that we need units like Delta, Force
Recon, Seals, etc., but I find it obvious that their identities and
other features should be protected because they are specifically part
of our forces to go after very bad guys--bad guys with global reach.
Only an idiot would publicly link our special ops troops to any
action, even one as simple as raising the flag in the morning.
I
remain aghast at the incompetence and flagrant dereliction of duty
exhibited by almost every political actor in the event.
I
am redoubling my prayers for this nation and a better course after
2012!

Yet another Holder at it again. When is
enough enough?
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has asked regulators to make sure fraud or manipulation doesn't prevent consumers from enjoying lower gas prices at the pump as the price of crude oil declines.
In a memo sent to several federal agencies Friday, Mr. Holder said he wanted members of a new federal gas-fraud working group to look at the issue and to propose possible solutions at a meeting later in May.

LOL, of course not. It came directly out of the ether via non-descript means.
U.S. officials were stunned to realize that whenever Kuwaiti or others left the compound to make a call, they drove some 90 minutes away before even placing a battery in a cellphone. Turning on the phone made it susceptible to the kind of electronic surveillance that the residents of the compound clearly wished to avoid.

Be creative for a damn change. And if you can't manage that, stamp some movies out of the WWII die; the general public is so ignorant they'll think you were creative.)

But every Hell Week story is also the same: A man enters a new world aiming to become something greater, and having subjected himself to the hardest tests of his life, he has either passed or failed.
Posted by: momma - West/Bolton 2012! at May 07, 2011 05:34 AM (penCf)
In short, those who fail are the ones who focus on show. The vicious beauty of Hell Week is that you either survive or fail, you endure or you quit, you do—or you do not.
Some men who seemed impossibly weak at the beginning of SEAL training—men who puked on runs and had trouble with pull-ups—made it. Some men who were skinny and short and whose teeth chattered just looking at the ocean also made it. Some men who were visibly afraid, sometimes to the point of shaking, made it too.
Almost all the men who survived possessed one common quality. Even in great pain, faced with the test of their lives, they had the ability to step outside of their own pain, put aside their own fear and ask: How can I help the guy next to me? They had more than the "fist" of courage and physical strength. They also had a heart large enough to think about others, to dedicate themselves to a higher purpose.
My brother in law is/was a Seal. The only thing he will ever tell you about it is that 'It isn't brains, muscle, strength that gets you through. It is 'love of family, God and Country.'
Thank God for these men. We owe them more than everything.

(Did I mention I saw Air Force One parked on the runway outside my work yesterday? I hate the JEF, but the plane was still exciting.)
I thought you were in WI. Where was AF1 parked yesterday? Are you at Ft. Campbell?

Conservativism has been vilified for so long in this country that very few people understand what it means. It has become a buzzword for anti abortion (not pro-life), racism, jingoistic nationalism, draconian and irrational budget cuts (wait, that's me!) etc.
I'll bet that very few college students could explain anything about what the Tea Party believes other than they hate minorities.

Ace never did publish his own review of Atlas Shrugged
But Capitalism Magazine has joined the host of critics who hate it.Posted by: Vic at May 07, 2011 06:51 AM (M9Ie6)
I gotta believe unless the Republicans completely spike themselves Obama is not going to get re-elected.
One thing I think we all need to do (when we're talking with Independents and sensible/persuadable Democrats) is tone down the "all politicians are the same" rhetoric. We have to make sure people associate the economy with the Democrats in Congress and the White House.
Posted by: Y-not at May 07, 2011 06:55 AM (pW2o8)
Yeah but The Hill probably has grammar school students writing for them.
She voted with the Dems 88% of the time, and virtually ALL the time on important items, including breaking Republican blocks. That counts as "centrist". Now that she only votes with them 52% of the time and still breaking republican blocks she is on the "right".

I have seen some reports that food prices have risen by over 20% in the past year.
But there is no inflation.

O/T
Am I the only one who thinks the military should decline to add ROTC programs to all these Ivy-League schools voting to accept them back? We're likely to see a very large draw down in the next few years, and contrary to the assertions of Northeastern intellectuals and the conservative wannabe's, I don't believe that a Harvard graduate adds that much more to the military than a graduate of Colorado State.

We should close on May 19th. There's one last inspection item to resolve (but it looks like it will be fine) and then we sign off on the contingency paperwork. We'll probably take about a month to move which will be kind of glorious, actually. Usually we have to schlep all of our stuff from far away and then deal with the boxes while trying to do all the little fixes you do when you get into a new place. This time we can do painting projects and other small jobs before moving.
I have to say I feel a bit nervous buying a house in this economy, but what are you going to do? It's not like our rent is any cheaper than the mortgage we're going to paying and for now at least we'll get the tax break. And I hate renting. We rented for the first 16 years of our marriage and that was enough.

That really can remove a lot of stress. I don't even want to think of the number of times I've moved in my married life....two of which were overseas. I'm officially allergic to cardboard. It is stressful!
Congrats and good luck!
Pooches skin is better but not perfect. He's on a prescription diet and only that can pass his lips. I have to bake doggies treats out of his food. Oh, and his allergy medicine is $100 a week. FML.

Think of it like this: You can put shit up on the walls, paint them green camo if you want, put up your Obama shrine in another room (mandatory in all new houses), and paint a pic of MAO on your front door (also mandatory). The Michelle Obama awesome arms bust is also mandatory, but you can put that in your bathroom.
Plus, when punks come along you can tell them: 'Get off my lawn!'

How close is this med to Benadryl? The doc wanted to give my dog very expensive allergy med and when we told him we couldn't afford it, he said, 'Yeah. Okay. Give him Benadryl.'
Hubby was pissed that the vet had me all worked up thinking we couldn't help our dog because the meds were too expensive, only to find out we could give him something for $4!

Damn. Thought I could save you some money
That is cool that they have meds like that for dogs. Sucks that it costs so much though.
@ the site - I've had problems with it for the last 2 days. Today it is working fine for me but others are saying they are having problems today.

Congrats on the house. LMK if you guys need help moving and I'll try and drive down to Happy Valley to give you a hand. We can finally have our Mini Moron Meetup schlepping your stuff around.
