Veterans Day 2011

Its origin is Armistice Day, the end of hostilities between the armies on the Western Front in 1918, World War I. The guns fell silent on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month". After World War II it was changed to Veterans Day, to continue a tradition of honoring those who served after the first world war.

Veterans Day is a day for us to celebrate and recognize the honorable service of those who wore the uniform and did their duty, whether in peacetime or in harm's way.

Here's a vet I'm kinda proud of. Basic training at San Diego, 1949. Goofing around (goof on the left). SO3, Purple Heart (Korea). So now you know where I got a lot of my goof. And my taxicab door ears.

If I clown around some, I come by it honestly. Dad turned 80 in June. He'll be here for Thanksgiving.

1 First?! Nice pic, Dave. Deep thanks to all vets everywhere. Many in wife's family are vets as well. My wife and I are actually playing a house concert at a 20-year vet's place in Fort Worth tonight. A coincidence, but maybe not in the grand scheme.

6 12 years in the Army reserve. Joined up July 1988 (I was bored). Got out Memorial Day weekend 2000. As a 2LT-1LT I was a forward signal platoon leader and then trainer. Later went JAG - big mistake and why I got out. Anyway, met all kinds of people from all walks of life and I'm glad I had the experience. I certainly support our vets; I don't support the abuse of our vets or our active (and reserve) soldiers.

10 My curse is also my blessing. I will never be the man my father was. He retired from the service after having fought in Korea as a Marine and joined the Air Force afterwards so as he put it, learn a skill other than fighting. He retired from the service after 20 but unfortunately died of a service related injury at the age of 55 when I was only 29. He was only one of the hundred thousands who have similar stories and love for their Country. I honor them everyday.

12 Deepest thanks to all of our vets, what they've sacrificed can never be tallied. And thanks for everything to me ol' Dad, who was in an Army MASH unit in Korea, but thank God after the main hostilities were done.

16 Just attended a Veterans Day Program at my daughters school. We were joined by a parent (Corporal) live via skype from Baghdad. Cafeteria was full of Veterans including many from WWII. Great program. Veterans were revered. Caught me emotionally flat footed as I will admit to crying like a little girl. Didn't expect that. Thank you Veterans.

18 As an Army vet, I have to say I'm in humbled by the veterans who've served since 2001. The Vietnam era was no picnic, but the multiple deployments and family hardships of today's service men and women are worthy of a class to themselves. Thank you so much.

I love that they still do this. We had these in elementary school and I've often wondered if they continue to do so.

22 My father served in the Army in WW2 in the Phillipines, my mother served in WW2 at the Cherry Point, NC control tower as a FeMarine. My son currently serves in the Army and is in Afghanistan.

25 Just watched Obama lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. I still can't stand him, but at least he's picked up on how to properly salute, and place his hand over his heart. Michelle, however, was walking around with a huge smile which seemed totally inappropriate. Am I nitpicking? Nah. I'm not commenting on her horrible dress.

26 A question.. My father died young at age 43. He was in WW II as a tank gunner in northern Africa and Italy.

But, that's all I really know.

Lately I've tried searching for some kind of online database or search engine where one could enter the name of a vet and search for info about where their units served. But I haven't found a damn thing.

Anyone run across such a beast on the internet?

28 After 9/11 I wanted to go back in (at 50!). For months following, as I looked at the line of young kids twisting through the federal building to the recruiting office in Louisville, I knew we were going to be in good hands. There's just something about real Americans. God bless those who have served, including my father, a WWII Navy vet who's still with us this Thanksgiving.

Chi-Town,

Download a SF-86 government form, fill it out and send it in. It will go to the central military records place (St. Louis, I think) and they will send you his complete military record. This will tell you what units he was in and then you can match that information to any decent WWII military history book to get all the info you need.

You can apply for complimentary duplicates of his medals once you have his history. My sil did this a few years back. Can't recall if it was DOD or VA, though.

I happened to drive by a Korean War Memorial today. Really nice, but almost always empty.

Today? A whole lot of people, and men in uniform. I should have stopped and come back, but I could see it looked really personal for some.

As they say, we can't thank enough. All we can do is the right thing when called upon. Which will be next Nov. if not sooner.

I spent 10 years USCG. It was a distinct honor and pleasure to serve. The best and the worst times all rolled into one. Funny though how you forget the bad ones...

Sad to day, I was actually surprised that they say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. I was even more surprised (and very happy) that they took the time to honor our veterans.

40 Happy Veterans Day everyone. Perry sent out a great email today with snips of letters sent home from a Captain in his wife's family who was killed in WWII. It was a good read. I salute all. I'm fortunate to have served during the cold war and can't imagine what the last ten years have been like.. I have great respect for the younger vets who have served and had wars to fight.
