War By Any Other Name And Your Metaphor Of The Day
— DrewM

Libya is not a war you silly wingnuts, it's simply "kinetic military action". Hope that clears things up for you.

In the last few days, Obama administration officials have frequently faced the question: Is the fighting in Libya a war? From military officers to White House spokesmen up to the president himself, the answer is no. But that leaves the question: What is it?

In a briefing on board Air Force One Wednesday, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes took a crack at an answer. "I think what we are doing is enforcing a resolution that has a very clear set of goals, which is protecting the Libyan people, averting a humanitarian crisis, and setting up a no-fly zone," Rhodes said. "Obviously that involves kinetic military action, particularly on the front end."

We've always been at war kinetic military action with Eastasia!

Oh, so our military is just dropping bombs, blowing things up and killing people in another country. Why on Earth would anyone think that's war? FYI- this non-war isn't meeting expectations yet. I wonder when the NY Times will declare it, whatever it is, a quagmire.

Meanwhile, it appears the ghost of Al Haig tried to stage a coup while Obama was gone and take over the Oval Office.

Sadly, somebody appears to have let him in.

Added: Ace has often talked about one of the main powers of the presidency...to not talk about something. It's the corollary to the "Bully Pulpit", if POTUS doesn't talk about something, it doesn't really exist and it's certainly not a crisis.

Well, Obama hasn't gone on TV to address the nation about Libya as every president I can remember has when sending troops into action. Yesterday I saw something on Twitter, I'll try and find the link (here it is), that said Obama has no public events scheduled for today or tomorrow. Now comes word there will be no on camera briefing by the White House spokesman either. They are simply hiding from the American people so they don't have to explain themselves. It's shameless and dangerous (if the military is going into action people need to support the mission. It's the job of the president to layout that mission and rally the public. Obama is derelict in doing his duty. Again.)

Mr. President, what would you call it if there were "rebel action" in the United States and Saudi Arabia or New Zealand bombed U.S. Army troops fighting the rebels?

That's where Obama's military advisors are taking too much direction from Barney Frank.  The idea is to preform kinetic military actions to the enemy's back end.

I want Qadaffi to die a horrible death someday. But a few years down the road after making this liberal circle jerk look real bad.

I don't service the targets, I shoot 'em. If the target lifters or generators are broken, Range Control is supposed to service them. I don't have any electrical or small engine maintenance training, so I wouldn't know the first-" He got all pissy and said that shooting was what he meant. "But we already have a word for shooting. I hate to go conspiracy-theorist here, but the refusal of Bambi to release his medical records makes me wonder if he has an ailment he's not discussing with the public.

The presidency clearly ages people, as seen with the "before" and "after" pics of Clinton, but Bambi looks like shit compared to how he looked just 2 years ago.

104 Okay, I'm really critical of Obama most of the time.  But in this case, I do agree, this is not a war.  It looks more like a monkey sh*t fight at the zoo.  I don't think it was a war when Reagan had those airstrikes either.  Now the choice of terms people use for this situation will always sound screwy just because I don't think there is a word in the english langauge that properly describes hostile actions enacted by a military that don't result in a knock-down dragout fight.

I think someone in the office suggested it for a laugh then, when they were taken seriously, they didn't bother to correct them.

On that note, I'm just wondering when we're going to start the Standard Hands-on Intensive Training of the Libyan rebels.

What is it with liberal doucebags that they can't call a thing by its name?

Do they really have that great of a need to appear intellectually superior to the poor huddled masses?

I'm so disappointed Barky didn't whack his head on Marine One again.  And did you catch the oldest daughter jumping down the steps?  I know she's a kid, but jeebus, have some respect for the guy standing next to you at attention.  You know, those weird guys your dad is so hot to send off to war and forget.

My thoughts exactly, Jane.  I thought the same thing, "I know that kid's entering puberty and that makes you really self absorbed and unaware, but she didn't even look at the Marine, whereas her little sister looked like she did.  I noticed the clip carefully omitted Moochelle getting off the plane.  I'm thinking she probably either scowled at the Marine or did the "You're invisible to me" think like her kid did.

You know, libtards are a lot smarter and more nuanced than us wingnuts.  Semantics and appearances are everything.  Little things like the truth have little value.  We're too stupid to realize that.

I hope there's no chemical military action involved.

123 White House staff apparently called 911 and told police there was well-dressed black man attempting entry into the residence. Staff was unable to identify the individual, but they said the individual looks a lot like a celebrity golfer they see a lot on television. Police reported that the individual did in fact live there, and that was -- in fact -- an employee. These reports are unsourced, however, and have not been verified.

124 I am not an Obama fan, but I don't know that I would call this a war. My father was at Okinawa and my uncles fought in places like New Guinea and northern Africa..by father in law was in the Battle of the Bulge..I am of the generation that lost 58,000 men in Viet Nam and in comparison I don't think of dropping bombs on Libya as a war anymore than I thought of Panama and Grenada as a war..

When Bush was president a lot of Democrats gave him a hard time over Iraq and Afghanistan because they are partisan and wanted to make his life more difficult. I think that maybe some conservatives are doing the same thing in Libya..I realize that it could not happen to a nicer guy. Obama deserves some of this grief considering his in general incompetence, however, Gaddafi has killed enough Americans over the years that he deserves every one of these bombs. I don't call this a war, I call this payback.
