Where Is The Ticker-Tape Parade For Iraq Veterans?
— Ace

I sense this is mostly political. I can conjure up a legitimate reason in my mind: Maybe, as far as timing, we're waiting for all of the troops to come home.

But I don't really buy that.

There is no rule that says veterans of a hard-fought war only get one ticker-tape parade.

Is there? Did I miss a rule they only get one tour through the Canyon of Heroes?

Jeeze Louise, sometimes defeated sports teams get more than that.

They fought hard. They won. Despite horrific odds, they won.

In fact, liberals should be the first ones to call for this: Their belief is that Bush sent them on an unwinnable war.

And yet they won.

So shouldn't they get extra credit for that?

Even if you hate Bush, if you really do "love the troops," as everyone claims and some really feel, then let's have a proper expression of gratitude.

Its because after the Lefts Spin on the Bush 'Mission Accomplished' picture, they are afraid to declare a victory.

It would also admit that Bush did somthing right... that there was a win...

So... no parades...

In reality, the main reason is we don't want to be seen as celebrating.

This isn't even the early 1990s where we could celebrate our military successes. Those days are long gone.

We need to be sensative to muslims and not make them think we are at war against them...yadayada yada.

We should've had ticker-tape parades or something reminiscent of Roman triumphs for the capture of Baghdad, capture of Saddam, his conviction and hanging, the elections, capturing Bin Laden, the works.

If we're gonna go to war, let's really go to war.  F this hand-wringing.  The military needs to be celebrated when they succeed in their hardfought assignments.

One thing about this article pisses me off, the idea that "if it doesn't happen in NYC, it didn't happen". Thousands of patriotic towns and cities across the nation have spent the last decade giving parades for returning WoT vets, showering them with love, respect and thanks.

Most of NYC has spent the last decade showering our returning WoT vets with disdain, insults and accusations (like the ones in the TNR comments).

37 "Even if you hate Bush, if you really do "love the troops," as everyone claims and some really feel, then let's have a proper expression of gratitude."

Yeeeeeeaaaaaah, we don't really love the troops.  That was just bullshit.  We just said that to give ourselves cover as we undermined the war effort. We think the troops are a bunch of baby killers. Which is ironic, when you think about it, because we're actually okay with baby killing.

We're nuanced like that.

It's just the reflexive anti-anything-west/anti-"flyover" country attitude of the Northeastern population that is completing their divorce from America. Just confirms what most people west of the Mississippi have known since the sixties - New York City is part of Europe. Not America, not really. Saying otherwise is just being polite.

58 At my town's memorial day parade in New Jersey with my kids.  Nice little town, nice little parade.  Vets in parade.  I clap and say thank you when I see the vets, my kids do too.  Rest of the crowd follows suit.  Four guys from WWII in the first car, then some Korean War Vets, then some old Desert Storm farts like myself.  Finally, in a convertable, a young marine with a chest full of medals by himself.  Smart ass neighbor says, "Who does he think he is?  Why is he alone?  What is he, homecoming king?".   I'm fuming.  I tell him, "What I see is a marine with a chest full of medals so I'm gonna clap and say thank you."  I explain to him, like a parent explaining the obvious to a toddler, that the vets were arranged by conflict, and that young man was probably freshly back from Iraq or Afghanistan.  I was pissed all day.  My neighbor isn't a bad guy, just never knew any body who served, like most Americans.  Makes me very worried about the disconnect between our citizens and the military men and women who fight for them.  Too long a post.  I'm still pissed.

To be fair, there wasn't a clearly defined date for winning- there was no VE day as in WWII, no surrender of the Japanese to mark the end of the war.  The drawdown was gradual unlike WWII when many thousands returned home over the course of a relatively short period of time.

Iraq veterans no question deserve our respect and gratitude, but the ticker tape parades of WWII don't really fit the circumstances, especially with Afghanistan still a war zone.

During the late 60's, hippies were forbidden from harassing or addressing military personnel at SFO.  To counter this rule, they used metallic clickers that sound like a cricket hoping to elicit a first response from the military, and only then could the dirtbags  respond.

Their purpose was to convince young men that serving was wrong, and they could provide an avenue to escape to Canada.  My purpose when transiting through SFO was to physically harass and verbally abuse these cretins.  They just didn't want to fuck with the combat veterans.

I know most of us that came back from Vietnam just wanted to get home, get drunk, and get laid.

When we got to Oakland, the people who were being processed out of the service because our enlistments were up, were told that we had to wear our uniforms to leave the post. But they added that when we got to the SF airport to catch our planes, the best thing to do was find a restroom and change into civilian attire to avoid being harassed by crowds of people who just hung around to jeer and confront the troops passing through there.

So where did this poster get Sarah Palin's SAT score? Posted by: curious at June 01, 2011 04:20 PM (k1rwm) My guess is they pulled it out of their ass, aka they provide no evidence whatsoever.

90 Fuck a ticker tape parade, having to march in formation through the Valley of the Libtards. The best thank-you I ever got as a soldier was from Pete Coors. We had done a live-fire exercise for him and his Young Presidents club. We torched the shit out of God's green earth for his and his friends' amusement, costing us another week away from home after a 2-month deployment. When we got back to garrison we did a one-week recovery, and at Friday afternoon's battalion formation, the back gate of the motor pool opens and the Coors trucks roll in and start slinging kegs. For 1500 thirsty grunts. THAT moved us. He didn't have to do anything. We had no choice in the matter, anyway. I'd rather something sincere like that for our troops than subjecting them to the inevitable shitwhistles who will be there calling them vile names.

We were urged not to wear our uniforms in transit, due to the "prevailing mood"--never forgot that shit phrase, so I made sure to have on all the shit I was allowed to wear, and that I was standing tall.

Only at the Greyhound station was there any problem--with two shitbags who got right in my face. I took what I thought was the appropriate action, and the cop apparently agreed with me.

When Dad shipped out on the boat from San Fran are in '66 he saw nobody because it was too early for the scum to be awake. 22 days at sea to Cam Rhan Bay for a Missouri farm kid who had never been at sea before. He made a ring out of a quarter. I've still got it in the safe.

Stuff you remember when this stuff comes up is funny.

These men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan made chicken salad out of chicken shit. Nobody can take that away.

Not even libs.

93 Ace,

Marcus had a point in an earlier thread that goes along with yours:

There is simply not enough recognition from the media unless it is something like the MOH. Frankly, there is not enough in general about the actions undertaken by heroes on our behalf reported by the media. They would rather talk about how great it is that Obama can match his own socks.

95 Stop whining you bitter clingers. Once we achieve V-AZ Day, we'll have a parade. We'll even have some religion for you extreme clingers. That Nahavo shaman is looking for a new gig.

Did you not notice that the commenters were asking for a link or proof of those numbers?   Not available.  I wonder why?

Posted by: Steph at June 01, 2011 12:32 PM (AkdC5)

97 I think there should be a parade, if only to educate some of our fellow citizens.  And have it in Texas, or near Walter Reed, and have Palin at it, along with Rubio, and Bush.  The media will have to carry it, and their heads will freaking explode.  Lets air it out.

Posted by: thunderb at June 01, 2011 12:33 PM (MrGes)

98 not saying it's right or wrong, but i think people are tired of all things war, people just want their loved ones back home and they don't care about parades and such.

It still amazes me that the kostards still cling onto the Tina Fey character as an example of Sarah Palin's intelligence.   She's acted above professional as these assholes tear at her an her family, yet she's still got the most popular bus tour in years.

Amazing how the stupid people can achieve so much.

Oh, and curious, there was absolutely no reason to bring that into this thread.   This thread was about our brave military.    Your "concerns" are getting tiresome.

Curious is either a thread snatcher or a snatch threader?

103 Couldn't a Congressman pass a bill to do a National Veterans Parade? All conflicts, all eras.

Call it National Living Heroes Day or National Treasures Day or something like that.

And make it a felony crime to use it to sell cars and mattresses.

I went there when the thread was initially posted had maybe two comments.  Then my computer began telling me that it was being attacked so I had to get off the site.

105 Yeah, have Palin, West, Rubio, our two Living Medal of Honor honerees, Rolling Thunder, and whoever else wants to march in it.  Don't wait for the Prez to request a parade.  Take over the narrative.  Tell the story.

Posted by: thunderb at June 01, 2011 12:44 PM (MrGes)

106 A lot of my friends are in Afghanistan.  some were in Iraq.  One didn't come home.   It was an enormous loss.

The church where I grew up has a long long list of those serving in the military, their names, so we can pray for them.  I went to school with most of them.  I pray for them every single day.

108 I remember for Gulf War I there was a ticker tape parade in Manhattan for the troops and coalition troops.  It happened to be my 21st birthday as well, when I was finally of legal age to drink, (not that I hadn't before :b ).  Special note is Israel was invited and participated to honor them for not striking back when Saddam launched missiles hoping to draw Israel in to alienate the Arab countries in the coalition.

109 I believe the standard liberal anti-war argument was not that a war in Iraq was un-winnable--in fact, no one doubted the US would subdue the Iraqi military forces relatively quickly--but that it would lead to a drawn out occupation with thousands of dead American troops and untold numbers of Iraqis killed.  That and all the lies that justified the invasion.  But go ahead and stick with your straw man.

Posted by: steve at June 01, 2011 04:10 PM (3LNTW)

110 And a few other points for the record:

There is no record of Vietnam veterans spit on upon returning from the war; this is an apocryphal story meant to slander anti-war activists.

I've noticed a good deal of NYC hate in these comments.  Did you all feel this way almost ten years ago, when outrage over an attack on NYC prompted the US to go to war with Iraq in the first place?

Posted by: steve at June 01, 2011 04:22 PM (3LNTW)

111 But go ahead and stick with your straw man. No, Chubby Checker, you are the twister. Your side said the war was lost to the insurgency. And your President said the surge would make things worse. A TTP would remind everyone that he had no clue.

Being a Vietnam Vet I can say that while I was never spit upon the reception I received upon my homecoming was cool at best.  I might add that I wasn't spit upon because I was a Marine 1stLt wearing my dress uniform.  That didn't encourage any type of assault.

OTOH, I have been thanked more for my service in the past two years than in the previous forty.  I think the American People are waking up to the commitments required of their Armed Forces.

113 #110, you're a fucking idiot who has obviously fallen for the academic notion that "unless someone got it on videotape and annotated it in a scholarly journal, it didn't happen."  I am inclined to believe the guys who told me it happened to them.

And while we hate the annoying Obama-voting liberals who have infected the city of my ancestors (I myself am a Tennesseean by choice), New York City is still American soil and will be defended as enthusiastically as anywhere else.

Except San Francisco. If I'm ever President, we're walling that bitch off and selling it to the Chinese for straight cash. They've bitched for fifty years about American foreign policy, so they get to get out of America. We're all happy that way.
