— Ace I sense this is mostly political. I can conjure up a legitimate reason in my mind: Maybe, as far as timing, we're waiting for all of the troops to come home.
But I don't really buy that.
There is no rule that says veterans of a hard-fought war only get one ticker-tape parade.
Is there? Did I miss a rule they only get one tour through the Canyon of Heroes?
Jeeze Louise, sometimes defeated sports teams get more than that.
They fought hard. They won. Despite horrific odds, they won.
In fact, liberals should be the first ones to call for this: Their belief is that Bush sent them on an unwinnable war.
And yet they won.
So shouldn't they get extra credit for that?
Even if you hate Bush, if you really do "love the troops," as everyone claims and some really feel, then let's have a proper expression of gratitude.

Its because after the Lefts Spin on the Bush 'Mission Accomplished' picture, they are afraid to declare a victory.
It would also admit that Bush did somthing right... that there was a win...
So... no parades...

In reality, the main reason is we don't want to be seen as celebrating.
This isn't even the early 1990s where we could celebrate our military successes. Those days are long gone.
We need to be sensative to muslims and not make them think we are at war against them...yadayada yada.
Posted by: Ben at June 01, 2011 11:35 AM (wuv1c)
We should've had ticker-tape parades or something reminiscent of Roman triumphs for the capture of Baghdad, capture of Saddam, his conviction and hanging, the elections, capturing Bin Laden, the works.
If we're gonna go to war, let's really go to war. F this hand-wringing. The military needs to be celebrated when they succeed in their hardfought assignments.

Completely agree Ace. I think that a lot of it is due too youger generations not feeling the threat (Who is this Bin Ladin guy) to there security the way people did when Pearl Harbor was smoking rubble and Hitler was marching across Europe.
They have done there job well, so well that they are underappreciated.

I will say that the fine people of the Maine Troop Greeters (Bangor, ME) know how to treat military personnel in transit. No need for a declaration, just supportive, good people. I had never felt more appreciated by anyone outside of family and friends than I did when I went through Bangor.

One thing about this article pisses me off, the idea that "if it doesn't happen in NYC, it didn't happen". Thousands of patriotic towns and cities across the nation have spent the last decade giving parades for returning WoT vets, showering them with love, respect and thanks.
Most of NYC has spent the last decade showering our returning WoT vets with disdain, insults and accusations (like the ones in the TNR comments).
Posted by: IllTemperedCur at June 01, 2011 11:52 AM (eyh2h)
Yeeeeeeaaaaaah, we don't really love the troops. That was just bullshit. We just said that to give ourselves cover as we undermined the war effort. We think the troops are a bunch of baby killers. Which is ironic, when you think about it, because we're actually okay with baby killing.
We're nuanced like that.

One thing about this article pisses me off, the idea that "if it doesn't happen in NYC, it didn't happen".
It's just the reflexive anti-anything-west/anti-"flyover" country attitude of the Northeastern population that is completing their divorce from America. Just confirms what most people west of the Mississippi have known since the sixties - New York City is part of Europe. Not America, not really. Saying otherwise is just being polite.

To be fair, there wasn't a clearly defined date for winning- there was no VE day as in WWII, no surrender of the Japanese to mark the end of the war. The drawdown was gradual unlike WWII when many thousands returned home over the course of a relatively short period of time.
Iraq veterans no question deserve our respect and gratitude, but the ticker tape parades of WWII don't really fit the circumstances, especially with Afghanistan still a war zone.

During the late 60's, hippies were forbidden from harassing or addressing military personnel at SFO. To counter this rule, they used metallic clickers that sound like a cricket hoping to elicit a first response from the military, and only then could the dirtbags respond.
Their purpose was to convince young men that serving was wrong, and they could provide an avenue to escape to Canada. My purpose when transiting through SFO was to physically harass and verbally abuse these cretins. They just didn't want to fuck with the combat veterans.

The knee-jerk, snarky answer I lamely thought of is that we need to wait and see how it all turns out in fifty years to know whether we "won" or not. But screw it, Saddam and sons gone, Iraq economy on the rise, and they have problems, just like Rahm has in Chicago. We won.

I know most of us that came back from Vietnam just wanted to get home, get drunk, and get laid.
When we got to Oakland, the people who were being processed out of the service because our enlistments were up, were told that we had to wear our uniforms to leave the post. But they added that when we got to the SF airport to catch our planes, the best thing to do was find a restroom and change into civilian attire to avoid being harassed by crowds of people who just hung around to jeer and confront the troops passing through there.
