— DrewM FROM CHUCK TODD:
CORRECTION: Incorrectly attributed quotes from House GOPer Mike Rogers to Pres. Obama. http://is.gd/eGSfe5
First, my apologies to the President.
Second, What the hell are you thinking Congressman Rogers? It's still an unbelievably stupid and insulting remark. A major apology from the Congressman and a primary challenge is in order.
Rogers is Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He should be the Former Chair of that important committee.
Here's Congressman Roger's webpage in case you want to let him know how you feel about anyone, Republican or Democrat, making such insulting statements about Americans in general and servicemen and women in particular.
As for our betters who say don't release the photos because it might inflame the Religion of Peace into a murderous rage (a state also known as "everyday")...everyone of you bastards better be on record either urging the withholding of or condemning the release of photos from Abu Ghraib.
Original and incorrect post below the fold. Unbelievable.
POTUS to CBS "Imagine how the American people would react if Al Qaida killed one of our troops...and put photos of the body on the internet"
Put aside the fact they do this whenever they can, how the fuck can any American, let alone the Commander in Chief compare bin Laden to American servicemen and women?
And FTR- I don't need to see the photos to believe he's dead. I want want the world to see this is what happens to you when you kill Americans.
I'm not saying impeach the bastard....wait, yes I am.

Holder: Bin Laden killing was 'act of national self-defense'
"If he had surrendered, attempted to surrender, I think we should obviously have accepted that, but there was no indication that he wanted to do that, and therefore his killing was appropriate."
So they sent the SEALs to kill bin Laden but they would have accepted surrender?!?

Things should be seen. He should be seen to be dead. I have no desire, personally, to view a photograph of Osama bin Laden's corpse missing half it's face. That would be rather gruesome, and I have no reason to look. However- it should be made available because- once things are done and no harm can come to the mission because of it- the things that went into the mission should be known.

We're not at war with Islam, yet we're worried that Muslims will seethe and riot if we release photos of OBL's dead body -- when OBL, per Obama, wasn't even really a Muslim.

That's not actually a problem for me. I prefer him dead (for a variety of reasons), but if he had attempted to surrender, it should have been honored.
Of course, if I'd been one of the SEALs on that team, I might have "missed" his request to surrender in "all the excitement."

Now that the birth certificate has been released, he needs a new "thing" that he can hold onto and the rest of us can demand to see. It's a power trip for him. It serves the further purpose of fueling the conspiracy theories that say that 1) Osama has been dead for years and the US government just decided to go public with his death OR 2) Osama is still alive and the US government just decided to play a big hoax on the world.
It's the Obama version of WINNING!

No. It's Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers.
Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said he was against releasing any photos, saying that he didn't want to make the job of U.S. troops abroad "any harder than it already is."
"Imagine how the American people would react if al Qaeda killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the Internet. Osama bin Laden is not a trophy -- he is dead and let's now focus on continuing the fight until al Qaeda has been eliminated," he said.

No. It's Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers.
Both Obama and Rogers are quoted as saying largely the same thing. From Roll Call:
"The risks of release outweigh the benefits. Conspiracy theorists around
the world will just claim the photos are doctored anyway, and there is a
real risk that releasing the photos will only serve to inflame public
opinion in the Middle East."
He added: "Imagine how the American
people would react if Al Qaida killed one of our troops or military
leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet. Osama bin Laden is
not a trophy -- he is dead and let's now focus on continuing the fight
until Al Qaida has been eliminated."

While we were being so sensitive to the needs of Muslims everywhere, we did make sure to have only Muslims handle Bin Laden's dead body, right?

HereÂ’s a typical response to a question about the SEALs from a senior defence official in a Pentagon briefing on Monday:
QUESTION: Can I ask you, can you confirm that it was a (Navy) SEAL team? And was this a specially designated team that had been practising or reviewing intelligence for a while and they were the unit of choice?
SENIOR DEFENCE OFFICIAL: Not going to comment on units or numbers.
But hereÂ’s what the legendarily verbose and loose-lipped Vice President Joe Biden said at a dinner at WashingtonÂ’s Ritz Carlton Hotel last night to mark the 50th anniversary of the Atlantic Council:
Let me briefly acknowledge tonightÂ’s distinguished honorees. Admiral James Stavridis is a, is the real deal. He can tell you more about and understands the incredible, the phenomenal, the just almost unbelievable capacity of his Navy SEALs and what they did last Sunday.
And:
Folks, IÂ’d be remiss also if I didnÂ’t say an extra word about the incredible events, extraordinary events of this past Sunday. As Vice President of the United States, as an American, I was in absolute awe of the capacity and dedication of the entire team, both the intelligence community, the CIA, the SEALs. It just was extraordinary.

My idea to rectify this situation. Start photoshopping that photo that's been around for a couple of years; touch up the head to bring it more in line with the reports and then add a torso. Not a torso of a simple-living terrorist leader, but, let's say, showing Bin Laden in a sequenced tutu, or a leather S&M outfit. The options could be endless and quite funny. Smother the internet with these photos. Show the world what Bin Laden was up to in his last few seconds of life.
We need to pressure this un-American prez with everything we've got.

There are at least five TV shows that regularly show crime scene pictures of the corpses of murder victims. And we won't show a picture of a terrorist being killed during an operation?
That makes sense how?
We publicized killings at Haditha, and falsely accused US personnel. We publicized fighting in and around mosques, even after it was proven that they were being used as defensive positions.
How does this decision make any sense?

Why is it so important to many of you that we do see it?
The reason we've been told for Obama's decision to go with a SEAL operation instead of a missile strike is that he wanted proof of Osama's death; proof that would have been destroyed by a missile attack. Now he won't share that proof with the American people. So essentially he sent our military into a potentially lethal situation to satisfy nothing but his own selfish desires.
No. If you wanted proof, Obama, then show it to us.

yes, i hear what you guys are saying but I think not releasing the photos and leaving doubt is a good thing. See Americans aren't so much yelling for the photos as the arab street and the "bad guys" are yelling for the photos. Seeing how this mission was so easily carried out, with no American deaths or injuries and little collateral damage and just the ordered scenario carried out is amazing and mind boggling at the same time.
Now, if you are a "bad guy/gal" anywhere in the world you are asking yourself if the US thinks you are a "bad guy/gal" and if the answer you reach is "yes" you are just about crapping your pants now and you are wondering how they managed to find this well hidden guy in the middle of this military mecca where he was well guarded just by being in that town. So you have to think this is driving them nuts, the are trying to figure out if any of their own had a hand in this and they really don't know who they can or cannot trust anymore. Add to the mix that the peace prize recipient invaded a second sovereign nation without really giving a damn and you start to worry about what this guy is capable of next. You have no predictability about BO anymore, none. You have a fear for your own "bad guy/gal" safety and you are wondering if your own mother is going to rat you out. I'd say a lot was accomplished on Sunday night.

Yes, I am going to jump all over you, because that makes no sense at all. We're not the ones hypocritically screaming at Republicans to be civil, we're the ones telling them to FIGHT BACK against the constant incivility of the left.
What it would accomplish is to tell the Islamic Jihad Movement that we don't bow and scrape to them, that they can sit and stew or burn down their own neighborhoods for all we care, because we WILL NOT SUBMIT.
If we give them what they want, we will get more terror, more threats, more violence.
Why is this SO DAMNED DIFFICULT?!?! If you subsidize something, you get more of it. If you give government money to corn farmers, more people grow corn. If you give a screaming child candy, they will scream every time they want candy.

But by releasing a humiliating photo, they give Osama the final indignity. Even the soldiers of Allah would not be able to stand being brought so low as to having their blood-drained wounded face on every computer background in America. In martyrdom is dignity and we would remove that from them.

I am pro the American people. Hey, buddy did you drive past the parking lot on 9/12/2001 in the back of your parents mini van and see the cars everyone's dad left on 9/11 when they went to work, unclaimed, unclaimed for almost a month. Obama works for us. He risked our men, lost an expensive helicopter, and violated Pakistani sovreignty to not just kill Osama, but to kill him and retrieve the body.
We have a right to know that all of those resources and lives risked and lost and U.S. "standing" in the international community accomplished something.
Just as importantly, he needs to sack up and stop appeasing the people who are trying to kill us for no better reason that you and I wear short skirts and don't cover our heads.

NYer's live with 9/11/2001 every single day, every day. So you can criticize me cause you want proof but you know what NYer's are fine with just knowing justice was done.
And, while I'm at it, all the conspiracy folks are saying that the kids who went to the WH and the people who went to times square and ground zero were planned. I know a lot of them, they just went, they wanted to go, they wanted to be in a group. They wanted to feel like Americans. Not a single one of them has said they were asked to go by anyone, it was there own impulsive idea.
Posted by: curious at May 04, 2011 10:55 AM (k1rwm)
My thing with the photos as a "warning" is... how is it a warning? We were searching for Osama for more than ten years. He slipped through our fingers heaven knows how many times. I don't believe this was dumb luck obviously, but it's not as if "you fuck with America, we take you out the next day" is standard operating procedure anymore. I wish it were!
Now, if you want to say it's a warning that we absolutely, resolutely will not give up searching for your ass until you are found and killed, then okay. That's a good warning. But it's somewhat toned down by the, "We'll also make sure to give you a proper burial in accordance with your religious beliefs, and won't release "trophy" photos of your bloody corpse," message that goes along with it.

Why is it so important to many of you that we do see it? Curiousity? Doubt that he's really dead? - Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 04, 2011 02:27 PM (SY2Kh)
It's called CLOSURE.
Ask anyone who's ever had a loved one disappear and the body is never found. Until you actually SEE proof that person is actually gone, you can't EVER completely reconcile what you've been told happened and what actually happened.
This monster ripped a hole in the very fabric of this country. If the people of this nation don't have an opportunity to see for themselves that he was, indeed, no-kidding taken out of the equation for good, we will NEVER be able to fully heal.
The fact that a picture is released DOES NOT MEAN that a person has to go and look at it - many people don't want to see the body of a loved one after they pass away - but the fact that they can IF THEY WANT TO makes all the difference in the world.
And there is nothing in the world like seeing the "boogeyman" - because for many people under the age of 25 who still remember that day, that is EXACTLY what he is - for what he really is. Just flesh and bone and subject to the same laws of physics and justice as the rest of us.

Second of all, there are hundreds of people in the Pentagon, as well as visitors to NYC on 9/11, who may see things differently.
Victimhood does not give you a special status to make policy that affects our lives as well. And BTW, you weren't even a victim, just a witness.

Sorry, gotta disagree with you here. It does not belong solely to NY. The entire country was attacked that day and we all suffered for it. Further, there's the Pentagon and field in Pennsylvania.
We were attacked as Americans, not as New Yorkers, and yes, while NYC caught the brunt of the attack, they were not alone, not before, during or after. So to say that New Yorkers are somehow superior in their judgement of this is just plain wrong.
And somehow, I don't think you speak for all New Yorkers nor do I believe that your opinion is typical of 9/11 families or the peripheral victims of the attack.

Release the photos. Those who need to see them will get their chance at closure then. Also, the sooner they release the photos, the sooner we can get back to trying to fix the country's wounds from iWon's disastrous policies.

New Yorker's don't have a lock on all the crap this country has had to endure because of that murdering goatfucker. Just because you know some New Yorker's doesn't mean you have the right to speak for the rest of the country in some mis-guided moral authority.

And, she things and always has that being from New York somehow makes you a better class of person than everyone else - or at least your opinions are more worth considering. She frequently describes opinions on the street *around her* as more important or relevant than what other people say elsewhere.
Today just combined both of those factors into an avalanche of verbal poison ivy.

Grow up. Treat the scum who follow Osama the same way he treated the victims' families from 9/11. They know their loved one is dead, but without a body, a photo, or anything there will always be that gnawing lack of closure. They said goodbye to their loved one in the morning, and never saw them again.
Let the scum know that we killed their bastard leader, and that they can either take our word for it or not. But we aren't helping them sleep at night by providing proof.
Give them false hope. Let their pain linger.
I hope those pictures are locked up for 100 years.
No closure for the bastards who followed and supported this animal.

It's not even that for me. It's his DUTY to show us he's fulfilling his oath.

Please call for Congressman Mike Rogers to resign his position as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee as I view his comments on the release of the bin Laden photos to be those of an incompetent idiot. Numerous photos of US citizens and military butchered by the adherents of islam have been plentifully displayed on the Arab media as recruiting tools. As a citizen, I deserve to see these photos of bin Laden. If the islamists riot and kill, their true anti-civilization colors will shine through and with no reflection on American ideals. I also think the Pakis deserve not one cent of my tax dollars. They are an abomination and have screwed the US for years.

In a court, a murder victim's family gets the opportunity to directly confront the murderer. Victim's families are also given the opportunity to witness the execution of the murderer. Well, Bin Laden is the murder of 3,000 members of my Amercian family and I want to opportunity to "witness" it.
Excellent point. Last week I watched a pre-Royal wedding special which noted that when Princess Diana was killed, the Queen failed to understand the connection the people of England had to Diana. The Queen initially botched her response (ie, wouldn't raise the flag half mast, no public statement or visibility) and did not understand the outpouring of emotion regarding Diana's death.
It seems Obama is doing a similar thing here. He doesn't "get it." The Queen was removed from her people physically and by class; in our case Obama's lack of American-ness once again obscures his understanding the OBL situation from our point of view. He doesn't think or feel like an American because his formative years were not spent her physically or idealogically.
