Why Stop at Pennsylvania with Electoral Vote Splitting?
— CAC

It is now unlikely that the electoral vote proposal in Pennsylvania will pass, and there are reasons against going for it, rather thoroughly explained by Nate Silver of the New York Times.

However, set aside the drawbacks and the dimming likelihood for a moment. Republicans control the statehouses and gov mansions in Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin as well. Three of these four have proven themselves election teases, yet in several elections the Republican Presidential candidate won a majority of the congressional districts (Michigan in 2000 and 2004 being the ugliest example of this, with George W Bush clearly winning 10 districts and still losing the state).

Democrats love to push the national popular vote, saying its more just. Well, what is the Republican counter-argument about "justness" and seeking accurate representation of the voters, on a state level? (Warning- large map below) Alternative EV 2012 Election Map

You know what Democrats, elections have consequences, though the Republicans haven't really taken the electoral bull by the horns. So, if Corbett & Co. are serious in the Keystone state, why aren't we pressuring Snyder, Kasich, and Walker to do the same in theirs? Yes, of course if Democrats took control of Texas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, etc we could face the reverse. It isn't outside the realm of possibility that Democrats could surge to victory in recapturing the state governments of the Solid South, certainly after their party's enormously popular health care overhaul, budgeting, and tax hike proposals, right?

Anyways, fappable food for thought, brought to life by our own John E.

2 Well what if the States that traditionally go Red did the same? Take my own State for example. My district traditionally went blue right up until the last election when Mulvaney took it. We also have Cyburn's minority majority district. Republicans would lose at least 2 electoral votes there.

This would happen all over the nation for Red States. In addition, as I said earlier, there was a reason the founders worked out this great compromise. I am reluctant to tinker with it.

Section 1 - The President Note1 Note2

The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice-President chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows:

Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector."

28 OT, caught in the NYT today courtesy Andrew Stiles at NRO: WASHINGTON — President Obama on Monday will call for a new minimum tax rate for individuals making more than $1 million a year to ensure that they pay at least the same percentage of their earnings as middle-income taxpayers, according to administration officials. snip Mr. Obama, in a bit of political salesmanship, will call his proposal the “Buffett Rule,” in a reference to Warren E. Buffett, the billionaire investor who has complained repeatedly that the richest Americans generally pay a smaller share of their income in federal taxes than do middle-income workers, because investment gains are taxed at a lower rate than wages. Mr. Obama will not specify a rate or other details, and it is unclear how much revenue his plan would raise. But his idea of a millionaires’ minimum tax will be prominent in the broad plan for long-term deficit reduction that he will outline at the White House on Monday. Just remember, Dick Soetero is all about solutions. Not political grandstanding. Of course, you might ask how such a new tax could possibly reduce the deficit when no rate or details have been forthcoming, and not a word has been given to how to get such a tax passed. You could ask that question, but then you would be a fucking racist.

34 More on the SCoaMF from Ron Suskind's new book:

“[Larry] Summers walked in, slightly late, but not impolitely so, and met Orszag at the table. And then it was the two of them. Orszag hoped that this time the White House would be less fraught with strife than the last go-round during the 1990s. Summers said it kind of came with the territory. This talk of their shared history seemed to thaw things out. They both grabbed for the plate of flatbreads … and tore corners at the discus-sized breads. ‘You know, Peter, we’re really home alone.’ Over the past few months, Summers had said this, in a stage whisper, to Orszag and others as they left the morning economic briefings in the Oval Office. … ‘I mean it,’ Summers stressed. ‘We’re home alone. There’s no adult in charge. Clinton would never have made these mistakes.’”

Why even stop at individuals? We have the technology, so let's split each person's vote while we're at it.

Say I could go into a polling place undecided and vote accordingly. "I'm not sure about Obama, but I'm not sure about McCain either. I guess I'm 60-40 for Obama, so I'll fill out the ballot that way." When I leave, Obama gets 0.6 votes and McCain gets 0.4 votes. All the squishy independents that don't want to commit to a decision can have their way.

56 Here's the mad scientist/doomsday technique from Silver's column ItÂ’s perfectly Constitutional, for that matter, for states to award their electoral votes through the state legislature, as many states did in the early years of the Republic, without taking a popular vote at all. If Republicans want to all but guarantee that they win the presidency next year, there is nothing stopping them. They control the state governments in 21 states totaling 242 electoral votes. All they need to do is have their state legislatures pick Republican electors in those states, and then for their candidate to win by popular vote in Alaska, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and West Virginia, which would get him to 270 electoral votes. Bwa ha ha ha. Ha.

58 Also, all this talk about EVs by CD seems appropriate retaliation for this. Eight states and the District of Columbia, totaling 132 electoral votes, have signed on to a plan called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, a proposal that would use a workaround to guarantee that the winner of the national popular vote would win the Electoral College once states totaling a majority of 270 electoral votes had committed to the plan.

86 More OT nutbuggery, snagged from Zero Hedge (yeah, I know, but it's the detail herein that opens your eyes): From Peter Tchir of TF Market Advisors Is September 20 Greek Default Day? If Greece is going to default, September 20th seems to be as good a day as any. Actually, it is far better than most to be GD-Day. Two big bonds, the 4.5% of 2037 and the 4.6% of 2040 both have coupon payments due that day, totalling 769 Million Euro. So if the IMF wanted to avoid letting another billion euro go down the drain, September 20th would be a good day to do it. The IMF seems to have delayed approving another tranche for now, so Greece must already have the money for this payment? The Fed Scheduled their meeting for 2 days. It now starts on September 20th. Maybe a co-incidence, but what better way to be prepared for new emergency policies?

Leave it to a moonbat to try to define Carter by bringing up Nixon....

It's not perhaps the best historical comparison but he has a point. When presidents compare themselves to former president, they have to be careful and Obama couldn't have picked a worse example. Nixon choosing Harding would have been the same, fair or not.

No wonder he brought up his jobs bill now, there is no chance of them having any time together to even discuss it.

150 439 I don't agree with the vaccine, anyone I know who has gotten it has had problems. But here's a question, did Governor Perry give the vaccine to his daughters? Did President Obama give the vaccine to malia. She's past the age when they give the shot. Over the years have had plenty of schools and doctors try to force me into taking various vaccines. Each time it was a mean and nasty arguement right up to and including me not going to a particular university and getting my degree at another institution. Michelle Bachman's premise resonates with a lot of people. The very idea that you should be forced to take a vaccine for a non communicable disease is beyond reasonable. Many time "they" say there is an "opt out" but it is generally on religious grounds and if you are at a religious institution you are stuck. This isn't about guardisil, it's about republican politics. I hope it backfires but not on Michelle Bachman. Posted by: mcat at September 16, 2011 09:35 PM (k1rwm) curious who are these people you speak of with bad reactions to gardisil? what schools wouldn't let you in because you wouldn't get vaccinated? what vaccination did you decline? what school did you get into that doesn't care if it's students are vaccinated?

153 Also, all this talk about EVs by CD seems appropriate retaliation for this.

Posted by: Comrade Arthur at September 17, 2011 08:32 PM (5Z/+/)

Earlier today I posted some info TX historian David Barton gave on the Glenn Beck show yesterday.  He said Soros is of course behind the funding to get states to adopt the "all of our pop votes will automatically translate to our state's EVs" movement.  As mentioned above, he's got eight states and the D of C to sign on.  He also has everyone believing that if a majority of states go for it that that will automatically bring in the rest.  Wrong and unconstitutional.  (But is anyone really putting up a fight against anything anymore?)

Slimy George's rationale is that the states on the East Coast as well as Cali will give Zero an easy 51% and ultimate victory.  )Flyover states don't count in the commies' viewpoint anyhow.)

159 I've been a proponent of district-level EV apportionment since the 2000 election aftermath -- for ALL states.  The libs love to bleat about "fairness" in their push for National Popular Vote, but in reality this system would be far fairer AND would not subvert the Electoral College.  Illinoisans outside Chicago could have their votes for president count again.  As could Californians outside SF and LA.  The same would hold true for liberals in deep red states:  New Orleans' votes for Obama would count; El Paso's would count; Memphis' would count.

Of course, the end result would still be that Democrats would never win another presidential election, ever.  But that's a feature, not a bug.

It's the curious that thinks it's smart enough to be a standardized test.

162 Nope, you are "making shit up". but then again, you are so jealous of me and my life in New York you can't help yourself but attack me at every chance you get. And, to think you have that lavish lifestyle in old arizonia with the kiddies and the hubby and a closet what? ten times the size of my presumed dinky little apartment. I got into schools just fine thank you, which is more than you can say, dear. You might want to engage in a little self examination as to why you can't control yourself when it comes to attacking me. More and more to me you sound like a paid perry poster. FY 2011 ends on September 30th, so the DOE-Loan Programs Office has to take care of certain grants by then. So anyone else slated to get their loan will receive it soon.

182 @143, 158

I read Silver's column, and I'm underwhelmed by his arguments.  "The [PA]  plan could undermine the integrity of the Electoral College"??  Puh-leeze.  He calls the Soros plan a "workaround" later on in the article, as if that plan were legit and PA's isn't.  What a hypocrite.  I think the donks are really still ticked off about losing the 2000 election and cover their rage in populist-sounding 'fairness' language.

I'm a big fan of the Electoral College.  I see real genius in it, and I think not having it would mean candidates would campaign only in the major population centers and never get to the hinterlands ... which is exactly what I think the dems would love to do.

Which brings me back to the 2000 election.  Yeah, Florida and hanging chads and "Bush stole the election".  Spare me.  Gore (iirc) never once that year campaigned in West Virginia after his book made him a pariah in a state full of coal and bitter clingers.  WV had gone dem in all but three presidential elections since the Depression, and it should have been easy pickings for Gore.  Had he won WV - which he should have - he would have amassed 271 electoral votes even without Florida, making hanging chads and the Supreme Court non-issues.  But our progressive friends need an outlet for their precious rage, hence the subsequent years of Bush hate.

188 Anybody think that the electoral process really shouldn't be about gaming the system so that your side wins?  Maybe it should be about giving a voice to the American people and doing their will.  If the majority votes for candidate X, shouldn't candidate X win?  If that's the best outcome, shouldn't that be the process?

Posted by: Just a guy at September 17, 2011 09:53 PM (gnViO)

189 I don't think gaming the system like this is productive.  Of course, Democrats would have done just this if it were possible to help themselves with it, and would have called us anti-democratic for complaining about it.

Precedents and traditions exist for a reason, and part of that reason is informing the judgment of succeeding generations.  Those who manipulate and alter those long-standing practices for their own benefit often find the rules used against themselves at some later point.

190 Anybody think that the electoral process really shouldn't be about gaming the system so that your side wins? Posted by: Just a guy at September 18, 2011 01:53 AM (gnViO) So, no problem with Nebraska breaking its votes up and Obama carrying one because of it, right? Because if its perfectly acceptable for one or two states to do this thanks to then-Democratic Governors and legislators, it is equally acceptable for Republican Governors and legislators to do the same thing.

Those who manipulate and alter those long-standing practices for their own benefit often find the rules used against themselves at some later point. Posted by: Adjoran at September 18, 2011 02:49 AM (VfmLu) When one party repeatedly stuffs ballots, and their judges strike down any sensible laws on Voter ID, what do the citizens in the rest of the state, who are stuck with their vote becoming worthless thanks to vote pumping in the cities, do? Just not bother? This system is far, far more fair to those living in the suburbs and rural areas than in the rotting cities. Detroit lost a fourth of its population in 2010 compared to the previous census, yet watch the returns from the city match its returns from 2000. Frankly, it is getting obscene, and if they want to "game" it like that, hey. Elections have consequences. Dems can try their hand in Florida and Texas and North Carolina when they control those states again if they want. I'd rather us allocate EV's everywhere this way anyway, 1 per district and 2 for the statewide winner per state.

Posted by: CAC at September 17, 2011 11:02 PM (JEVge)

192 Is it not "gaming the system" under the current PA system, where Philly, Pittsburgh, Scranton and Harrisburg almost always give the EVs to the Dem?
I live in Philly, where my vote is wasted (the city reliably breaks 80/20 Dem in Presidential elections, Obama or not), but why should my city outweigh the whole rest of the state? Congressional District divison of EVs seems to be much more fair and reflective of the will of the state as a whole. Too bad the Pubs, even when handed total control, feel queasy about exercising that power.

If anything is crazy, its the Nation Vote movement. So far, it seems to be comprised of all reliably blue states. They will change that law very quickly when they have to give their EVs to a Pub.

Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at September 18, 2011 12:18 AM (dIHHd)

193 I hope to God it doesn't happen but I will laugh my ass off if Obama wins the electoral vote and loses the popular vote.  The force of all the jaws shutting on the people demanding we end the electoral college will be enough to make their heads reach escape velocity.

Posted by: buzzion at September 18, 2011 01:24 AM (GULKT)

194 So, no problem with Nebraska breaking its votes up and Obama carrying one because of it, right?

No, I've had problems with Colorado, Nebraska and Maine doing it.  They were anti-democratic measures which further separate the election outcome from the popular electoral will.

Posted by: Just a guy at September 18, 2011 05:49 AM (gnViO)

195

I live in Philly, where my vote is wasted (the city reliably breaks 80/20 Dem in Presidential elections, Obama or not), but why should my city outweigh the whole rest of the state?

Because there are more people in the Philly and Pittsburgh area.  It is people that vote, not land.  If more people in Pennsylvania vote for Candidate X, then Candidate X should win that state's electoral votes.  It shouldn't matter where in the state those votes come from.

Better yet, the constitution should be amended to do away with electors altogether.  If more people in the USA vote for Candidate X, then Candidate X should win.  It shouldn't matter where in the country those votes come from.

Posted by: Just a guy at September 18, 2011 05:54 AM (gnViO)

196 2Well what if the States that traditionally go Red did the same? Take my own State for example. My district traditionally went blue right up until the last election when Mulvaney took it. We also have Cyburn's minority majority district. Republicans would lose at least 2 electoral votes there.

This would happen all over the nation for Red States. In addition, as I said earlier, there was a reason the founders worked out this great compromise. I am reluctant to tinker with it.

Posted by: Vic at September 17, 2011 06:30 PM (M9Ie6)

thanks Vic, those are pretty much my thoughts as well... a straight up popular vote assures the large metro areas always drown out the rural areas, it's a recipe for a permanent Progressive majority.

The electroal college was established so that large states (population) wouldn't overwhelm smaller states - one of the great compromises of the Constitutional process.  I DON'T want the political machines of Chicago, New York, Detroit, etc. to determine the next President.  I don't want the Presidental candidates to igore Iowa or Nebraska or Missouri or any other small population state, which they would be able to do under popular vote.  Look at Europe to see the problems with pure popular vote:  Paris determines what France looks like, London rules England, etc.  People in cities tend to be less self sufficient - water, sewage, garbage, police etc. are all provided by the government and this leads to a certain mind-set.  When this mind set is forced on the entire country (not just talking the US here) it's a one size fits all scenario AND THIS DOESN'T WORK - one of the problems with Europe is the monoculture approach and one of the things that would ruin the US just as predictabily.

Exactly. When in doubt, go with the method the founding fathers designed.
