Wikileaks Releases Thousands Of Cables Containing Unredacted Names of Agents and Sources
— Ace

Supposedly, this was an accident; supposedly, they never intended to out agents and sources.

But they did.

The release of the file could potentially endanger the informants mentioned in the documents, many of whom live in countries whose governments are hostile to the US. The confidential diplomatic cables were redacted before publication to protect sources, but the file on the Internet contains the original, unedited documents.

Supposedly it happened like this: Supporters of Wikileaks posted what they thought was just an archive of already-published leaks, but the original, unredacted material was posted with it in a hidden file.

Then another Wikileaks person posted the password to read that file, not realizing the hidden file was publicly available.

Whatever their stories are, they should be arrested. Finally.

They have leaked information which result in deaths. Whether they did this deliberately, and contrived some cover story of a "slip-up," or they are just a bunch of arrogant prats who are playing a game of wannabe secret agents and screwed up anything as could have been easily predicted, it doesn't matter.

They took all the steps that led to this deliberately, and with malice.

Hunt them down and either bring them to the US to stand trial for espionage or declare them enemies of the state and kill them. On a more serious note, isn't breaking into our computers the same thing as spying on us here?  Legally, I mean.  I think it's kind of crazy that we don't go after unregistered foreign agents when there are perfectly legal mechanisms for doing so. Forget America, most humans who love their country care about national sovereignty and foreign agency.

41 THE PLAME CONTRAST IS APT:

Armitage - Powell's longtime attache - leaked Plame's ID to BOLSTER Wilson who was a foe of Bush - and thereby weaken the USA's ability to project power and defend our interest.

Then the MSM attacked Cheney/Ceheney's office as the leaker as if the leak was meant to scare WIldson-Plame into silence and as a shot across the bow of any/all future agents whi might see themselves as whistle-blowers.

The has to seen as grave and endangering Plame and the US in order for the hysterical witch-hunt to seem justified.

Because WIkileaks is a leaking system designed to hurt the USA the left sees WIKILEAKS more like Wilson - a whistle-blower -  than like Armitage (a good leaker because his leak was anti-Cheney) or Libby - the fall guy who didn't actually leak Plame's ID.

Whistle-blowers on the left against the left are seen as traitors and sellouts - folks off the plantation.

Whistle-blowers against the right are seen as brave truth tellers.

Where one stands vis a vis leftism is more important to the left than patriotism or defending Western Civilization from islamo-terror.

Let's "leak" the name, address and telephone number - along with any other personal info like credit card info, SS #'s, etc.. of everyone involved in wikileaks.

I'm sure they won't mind, since according to them, all data is public.

Then.. let's just let all the fucking pimply faced hackers/geeks have at 'em.

And maybe someone who cares a bit more might want to pay a "visit" to these pricks.

seems fair to me.

Regardless, as someone said in the comments before me, they want to play with the big boys so let us treat them as such.

61 ARRESTED?

We're in a war.  I'm not sure arrests are the proper way to handle this.

To some extent, I support the ideal of wikileaks.  At some point, the voters need to know what their governments are really up to.  But there's an obvious need for some degree of generality.  For one thing, diplomacy is completely impossible in an environment where bad guys and good guys can't chat with real confidentiality, or discuss one another with allies and foes to some extent.

You need that.

And of course, the names of secret agents is of no use democratically.

But that we're using x tactic and y tactic is a just bit of news to eventually expose.  I don't like the idea of the government keeping its means private.

Since some of these people are doing much more than merely informing the citizens about the war effort, and are actively fighting to kill our spies (what else could you call outing them) then the best solution is a covert action against our enemies.

Treason, by any other name is still Treason. The gay soldier who passed this information to Julian can be executed for this, and if any American agents die as a result of this, his death should be automatic. As for the rest of them, if they are American their acts amount to treason. If they're not American they're guilty of crimes of espionage and can be treated as enemy combatants. I'm sure the SCOAMF will understand and empathize with their good intentions. That shouldn't keep other Americans from acting in America's best interests in this matter.

99 Clearly, regardless of whether it was deliberate or simply out of negligence, this is a horrible deed on the part of WikiLeaks.

So I understand Ace's passion on this - BUT - it's just false to imply that anything WikiLeaks has done is in any way illegal.  Leaking classified material is illegal, but third parties (journalists) publishing leaked classified material is NOT illegal, and is protected under the First Amendment's free press guarantees.

Furthermore, it's conjecture at this point to say this action has or will resulted in deaths.  The NYT article says that especially vulnerable sources have already been moved out of harm's way.  It's still very possible that everyone will be okay.

Still, WikiLeaks has lost a lot of goodwill and credibility even among those of us who tend to support it and its mission.

Leaking classified material is illegal, but third parties (journalists) publishing leaked classified material is NOT illegal, and is protected under the First Amendment's free press guarantees.

I'm pretty sure the current jurisprudence is that the government cannot prevent the publication of classified material, it can however prosecute once it is published. That might not make sense at first, but it seems the SC has tried to thread the needle by prohibiting the interruption of publication (thereby allowing the press freedom) while also allowing that the nation has secrets to keep. And there's also the issue of the many journalists who've spent time in jail for not revealing their sources (i.e people who were party to a crime but obstructed justice by not cooperating).

So you're saying that people engaging in legal activity should nonetheless be subject to assassination, torture, etc if they are "deemed" to be sufficiently 'immoral' or a 'threat to national security,' despite their actions being LEGAL and CONSTITUTIONALLY PROTECTED?

I'm sorry but if you'd like to live in an authoritarian state like that you really should pick a different country to live in.  I hear Russia, Iran, and North Korea are all quite lovely this time of year.  But if you are going to live in the USA you should really brush up on your First, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments.  Assange deserves trial if he's done something illegal (which he hasn't).

114 >>I'm pretty sure the current jurisprudence is that the government cannot prevent the publication of classified material, it can however prosecute once it is published.

You're wrong.  Government employees and officials who leak information (allegedly Pfc. Bradley Manning in this case) CAN be prosecuted, but journalists (NYTimes, Wikileaks, AoSHQ, etc) who publish leaked information that has been provided to them CANNOT be prosecuted because what they're doing is protected by the Constitution.  This was established in NYTimes v. US back in the 70s over the Pentagon Papers.  The only difference between the Pentagon Papers and what WikiLeaks has disseminated is that the Pentagon Papers were actually a much higher level of classification than these diplomatic cables.  So it's just false to say Assange has done something illegal.

Posted by: Max Power at August 29, 2011 09:19 PM (+wxCD)

136 I understand the desire to adhere not just to the Constitution but to the Libertarian principle of eschewing the initiation of force. The problem is absolutism. At some point, "war by other means" overcomes the prohibition against "initiation of force," there becomes an affirmative duty to act to stop attacks that don't *quite* rise to an "act of war." Everyone is very frustrated about this even because the authorities who should be taking action to stop it are sitting around with their thumbs up their asses. This is a classic problem with both Bill-of-Rights absolutists (with which I sympathize) and on the other end, pacifists and anti-war absolutists (which tend to be anti-West more than anti-war). Both will tend to wait too long to act, both encouraging aggression and generally resulting in a response that is hasty and ill-considered *because* it is too late. Day *1* of Wikileaks action against us specifically should have been aggressive infiltration up to and including arrest and interrogation (legal) with regard to their sources, who are definitely breaking serious US laws. That was apparently not done, and the damage has multiplied since then. So Dicklessness has, once again, led us down the path of chaos and destruction.

As far as constitutional protection, if we extend it to Assange, we should have extended it to Bin Laden.  Both have effectively (if not actually) declared war by performing actions either to harm or Provide Aid and Comfort to the Enemy (I classify identifying our covert agents aid, as the enemy doesn't have to root them out themselves).
