Will Romney Have To Swing at Perry?
— Ace

FoxNews just noted that Mitt Romney has been keeping his focus relentlessly on where he's long kept it -- squarely aimed at Barack H. Obama.

That's all well and good. I sort of like that.

But I don't think he'll be able to maintain that. Perry isn't exactly hammering Romney with attacks, and he's not hitting him with anything new. But he is hitting him.

Romney's strategy made sense as long as he was the front-runner. By ignoring his rivals, and only getting into arguments with his would-be general election opponent Obama, he could propagate the idea that all this primary business was a formality and the real headliner of Romney v. Obama was set in stone.

I have given Romney props on this before. If there is one thing I have liked about him, it was his combination of hammering Obama only, and dismissing his rivals as pretenders to the Alpha Dog throne. (His best Alpha Dog moment came when Pawlenty made that scripted semi-joke about mowing only one acre of Romeny's lawn, and the debate moderator asked if he wanted to respond, Romney just smiled and said "That's just fine." As in, "I need not stoop.")

But that was a different situation. Well ahead of his rivals, and the only candidate the Establishment was even halfway confident in, he could use his front-runner status to further his front-runner status.

But he's not the front-runner now.

I really don't want him beatin' up on my boy Perry, but I don't see how he can avoid doing so.

Of course the trap in that, now, is the media's new headline becomes Desperate Romney forced into campaign re-think of that kind of thing. Still, that's a one day story, and it doesn't say much more than we already know (i.e., Romney is no longer the front-runner).

8 One of the biggest clubs Republicans have in the bag is Obamacare.  Untill Romney comes up with a good answer for Romneycare he's done.  Perry can hit BO hard on it.  Romney can't.  Just the way it is.

Posted by: Duke Lowell at August 25, 2011 03:15 PM (6hsR4)

9 The indispensable characteristic for the GOP nominee this time is a willingness to mix it up, and by mix it up, I mean eye-gouging, crotch kicking, and feces-flinging.  That's why Pawlenty is out, and Cain lasted as long as he did.  To many of us remember McCain playing nicely, while Obama went the Chicago way.

Perry clearly knows how this game is played.  Romney needs to demonstrate that he does, and right quick, or it's over for him.

10 I have given Romney props on this before. If there is one thing I have liked about him, it was his combination of hammering Obama only, and dismissing his rivals as pretenders to the Alpha Dog throne.

I thought that would hurt him in the long run. Rather than work up a strong base of emphatic supporters, he choose to play the defacto winner, and by not engaging strongly he picked up squishy voters who like "civility" and "presidential image" but no one who would actually fight for him because of *strong* feelings that he is the best candidate. Sort of loosely attached non-committals. Now he will be forced to change tactics, and those loosely attached to him will shed off, making his condition worse before it gets any better; if it ever gets better enough for him to win.

I disagree, I think playing the civil center in an emotional race like this one, especially in the primary, where everyone has a bone to pick, was a loser from the beginning, it was just a matter of time before the loose attachment to his supporters was stripped. And he would never build the supporters necessary to man his call centers, and go door to door, by being supremely uninspiring.

Romney is everyone's "safety school".  Everyone's second-best choice.  If he wasn't, then his place-holder lead wouldn't have evaporated the moment a real candidate challenged him.

Romney has only one shot at beating Perry, and that's for Perry to implode.

Which means Romney should stick to his strategy, slow and steady, and be ready to pick up the pieces should we not be able to get into the really good school we always wanted to go to.

Yeah, but that's why Chuck Norris can be a nice guy.   Everyone knows he can rip your legs off, so he has nothing to prove and nobody challenges him.  There are real doubts about Romney, so he has to show that he can be dirty if (when) Obama goes that way.

17 I think Romney is screwed. If he goes after Perry, and makes it a Romney vs. Perry fight, he loses. Perry is more conservative, and the Republican primary electorate is very conservative. His best bet is to keep raising money, keep bashing Obama, keep investing in New Hampshire, and hope Bachmann or Santorum go after Perry and damage him and then split the social conservative vote.

20 Completely off topic....but the temptation to volunteer to work on Sunday is growing. I work in White Plains New York, and the eye is projected to make landfall in the general area.   Since I work for a rather large telecommunications company, with it's own back up power generation capability, and multiple redundant communications 'pipes', and working on the eighth floor...safely above any flooding risk, this would be a great opportunity, and kind of sort of safe too.

22 Not with ya on this one Ace... Romney is just not going to cut it this time.  McCain ruined me on establishment GOP, ie, Dole..  The MSM would love to anoint Romney because if he's our nominee, IMO, he'll severely retard turnout and make draw a 3rd party run.

I'd vote for him if he was the nominee, BUT he is a NE GOP machine pol with lots of money and is not stridently pissed off about Washington being out of control.

I think all of the GOP nominees should treat one another with respect and reserve all the attacks on Sir Golfsalot and the Democratic party ruining the country since 2007.  They need to be unified on the message that it's time to put the GOP back in control of government to disassemble the freaking trainwreck and push a rest button; ideally to 1912 please.

Rick Perry has the best chance for a Reagan "there you go again" moment in a debate with Obama.  Don't underestimate the power of the laconic personality.

Romney will come across as technocratic as Obama will.  Even when Romney tries to go for the jugular (e.g. "Barack Obama's dog food) he comes off as too scripted.

So far, Perry's the one to beat - and Mittens doesn't have it in him.

31 Perry's got a lot more to worry about from Bachmann. She has to win Iowa whereas it was never in Romney's plans. If she doesn't win or place a very close second she's toast. I'm surprised you think Romney might be panicking. There was always going to be a Tea Party/Conservative candidate who came in and at least briefly stole the spotlight. If it wasn't Perry it would have been Palin. What, you think he has been building an organization for 2 plus years and hadn't noticed the political climate? Romney has built an organization to go the long route not try for a quick knock out in Iowa, NH and SC. He doesn't need to take on Perry, the media, Bachmann and the others will do it. And his record will take some of the bloom of his rose.

32 @16
To me a substantive attack can still show the nuts-ripping side of a candidate.

I've never gotten the McCain "my friends" hit off of Romney.  I think Romney is closer to Perry and Pawlenty was closer to McCain with his pretend nice but some cheap shots routine.

From what I've read, Romney was thought to be behind all sorts of dirty fighting last round.  I never followed it and don't much care, but I thought that was well-established.  So to me we know he can fight dirty.

I guess I'd like them both to emerge looking Presidential out of this.  Partly, because shit happens and I agree with Truman North that Romney is our back up.  Also, I want to have the option of Romney as VP.  Looking at that Baseball Crank electoral map (I keep linking to his post but everyone ignores it so I won't link again), it really seems as though the Midwest is key.  Romney is a better campaigner than Pawlenty, imho -- fundraising wise and stylistically.  Also, I chortle with delight at the exploding Progressive heads with an Evangelical-Mormon ticket.

I'd also like Bachmann to emerge unscathed as well, by the way.

The rest, I don't take seriously as candidates and don't have big futures ahead of them that I can see, so I don't care what happens to them.

53 I think both Perry or Romney could beat Obama, but I think a Perry win looks like 2004, while a Romney win looks like 1980. Romney would probably be the favorite in Michigan, New Hampshire, and Nevada, for example. He could truly landslide Obama by running as a moderate-ish center-right guy who basically ignores divisive social issues that tend to turn off moderate/independent voters. If Perry is the nominee, and he only narrowly defeats Obama, then we may not have seen the last of Barry. He could try to pull a Grover Cleveland and run again in 2016. But If Romney is the nominee and landslides his ass, Obama is done. He'll have been Carter-ized.

87 Florida Romney would win a majority of voters against Obama, taking 51 percent to the president's 43 percent. (And that's even without Marco Rubio on the ticket.) The more encouraging news for Romney may be that he continues to lead Perry in the Republican primary, even as Perry has surged to first place in national primary polls. In the Sachs/Mason-Dixon survey, Romney takes 28 percent to Perry's 21 percent and Bachmann's 13 percent. http://tinyurl.com/3m3knws

Yep.  There's a difference between the vetting we all need to do with the candidates to make our decision and a street brawl.

I can win an argument with my husband nearly every time, but I'm only right about half of the time.  I'm just a much better arguer than he is.  I'm more aggressive, I think more quickly on my feet, and I fight dirty.  But after 27 years of marriage, I've finally started to learn that winning fights is not the most important thing.  And, in fact, it's not really that helpful to the cause of having a good marriage.

I'm kind of hoping Romney and Bachmann focus on the purpose of this whole process.  Trying to win, but doing so on substance so that we are best-positioned, whoever our candidate is, for the general.

I have no such illusions about Ron Paul, the selfish little troll, and don't think the others in the race can do much damage.

109 hmm.  I am seriously conflicted about Perry.

On the one hand, he is a charismatic guy, and that is good.
On the other hand, he is a Texan.  That will be used against him, fairly or not.

On the one hand, he leads a state that has been a jobs engine for the country.  That is good
On the other hand, he does have some crony capitalism problems.  The vaccine, the highway.  Sure they didn't come to pass but he still proposed them nonetheless.

And - let's just be honest about it - there is a lot of anti-Southern bigotry out there, where when certain people here a Southern accent they immediately think "dumb". These people are more likely to be in the states of the upper Midwest that are going to be crucial for R's to win.  Romney has the anti-Mormon bigotry, Perry has the anti-Southern bigotry.  I am not sure which is worse in the places where it is going to matter the most.

Romney is a safe, managerial candidate.  Perry is more of a risk-taking, swashbuckling candidate.  I don't know which is better when it comes to defeating Obama, which is my #1 goal.

Anyway, just throwing some thoughts out there.

Romney is in a tough spot.  With what exactly can he hit Perry?

That Texas has created too many net jobs over the past decade?  That there's been too much tort reform and too much spending restraint in Texas?  That Romneycare has been such a success?  That Romney's 4-year tenure governing Massashusetts makes him more qualified than Perry's 11-year tenure governing Texas?  That Perry's service in the U.S. Air Force pales in comparison to Romney's service, er, never mind.

Seems to me that Romney only has three options: (1) bash Perry over the vaccine issue (already old news), (2) get low down dirty and personal (not Romney's style and in any event bad form all around), or (3) run a positive campaign, avoid the mud and see what happens.

I suspect Romney will take the high road and will let the chips fall where they may.

Barring a bimbo eruption or similar scandal I expect Perry will be the nominee and that he'll have it wrapped up early in the process.

121 He could truly landslide Obama by running as a moderate-ish center-right guy who basically ignores divisive social issues that tend to turn off moderate/independent voters.

This is neglecting one major factor that killed McCain in 2008. That is voter turnout.

All those red States that McCain turned blue will stay blue. Also, a few more red States in the South will turn blue as Republican voters stay at home..

The voters in the South will NOT vote for a liberal leaning Northeastern gun grabber.

If Romney gets the nod it WILL be a landslide, but for Obama.  And that doesn't even count the probability that the Tea Party will get together and run a 3rd Party candidate and we lose 18% of the Republican vote to that as Rasmusen said.

151 Perry has been running non-stop since he ran for yell leader at Texas A&M and has never lost, for any office, not even when he ran as a Dem. Mittens has run twice, once by promising to behave like a Dem, which he did, and once by hoping we all forgot, which we did not. Not even Obama won every time; he lost to Bobby "Chicago 7" Seale in a frickin House tussle. If Mittens goes after Perry, it'll be like those 'bum of the month' pre-championship bouts heavyweight boxers used to have: over in a minute or so. But it really doesn't matter if Mittens throws a few girly-man waves at Perry, or just runs and hides in his corner: everyone wants to see a knock-down drag-out no-holds-barred cage battle between Perry and Obama. Perry does not run to lose.

194 Houston Judge Eva Guzman, the child of an immigrant welder and cleaning lady, became the first Hispanic woman to serve on the Texas Supreme Court on Thursday when Gov. Rick Perry appointed her to the court. [ ] There, Perry hailed Guzman, 48, as “a strict constructionist with an unmatched work ethic” and a “principled conservative.”  Until she was quickly sworn in Thursday after the formal event, she sat on the Houston-based Texas 14th Court of Appeals, where she has written more than 900 opinions and gained a good reputation among local bar lawyers. Perry appointed Guzman to that position in 2001, and she won election to that bench in 2002 and 2004.  She is also a former Harris County Family Court judge, appointed in 1999 by then-Gov. George W. Bush and elected to the position subsequently.

>> Pretty odd that people here seem to be giving Perry a pass on his Dream Act. A couple years back during the great amnesty kerfuffle he would have been tarred and feathered.

Oh come, he's not getting a pass.  It was a stupid law and it's a negative.  Perry's been less strident on immigration than I'd like him to be, he's not as awful as he could be.  He's been good on immigration crime and drugs.  Likely favors a guest worker program (I don't hate that idea).

It's a border state.  Over half the cars driving in the valley have uninsured drivers, Dallas County is still 25%.

All of us, you included, favor candidates who have negatives.  They're politicians, which is a great reason not to fall in love with them.

From my perspective, for my vote I mean, Perry has far fewer negatives than Mitt.  One positive Mitt has (to your earlier point) is Mitt's got more money and more early ground game, and with the exception of Bachmann hasn't had any real challengers.  That's changed for now, but it's only been 2 weeks.

For the record, if it's Mitt in the general, then I vote for Mitt.  But it'd be a blocking manuever, just like my vote for McLame.

Also the crony capitalist charge is one Mitt should avoid, it won't make him look better in comparison.

216 35 - get something in the 1.5KW class (still small enough to fit in the trunk of your car).  Get one with a starter (cranking those things is not fun).  With 1.5KW, you can run your fridge, TV, radios, fans & more, if needed.  However, be aware that you MUST change the oil after the first 5 hours of operation and then every day of continuous run thereafter.  A 1.5KW almost loaded to capacity will require about 5 gallons of gas every 8 to 10 hours.

Last hint - leave it outside (Duh - CO2) and run extension cords through your window into the house.  If needed place something over the top of the generator to keep some of the rain off.  Good luck.

217 >>Oh come, he's not getting a pass. It was a stupid law and it's a negative. Ridiculous. Have you even been reading this and other blogs for the last month? It barely ever gets mentioned and when it does people shrug it off as unimportant just as they just did when you well know it was considered treasonous here and throughout the rightosphere not very long ago. Of course I know why. Perry is the conservative flavor of the day and he is getting the same hands off treatment Fred! got last go round. That's fine. But that's the truth. Of course there are regional differences and issues any candidate has to deal with because of the circumstances he governs in. I have been saying that since, well, forever. Romney gets dinged for his healthcare plan only about every 2 minutes here while it affects pretty much nobody. Truth is, people in MA wanted it and could vote to get rid of it at any time with a simple petition. That hasn't happened oddly enough. I've no doubt that Perry has less negatives from your perspective than Romney. You're a Texan. From my perspective, in the general, he has a lot more negatives. If nothing else he is being embraced strongly by the Tea Party when the Tea Party is sinking as fast as Obama in the public perception. You can read the polls as well as I can and you know that's true. But like you, if Perry is the candidate I will vote for him with the same enthusiasm you would for Romney. Or I would for Romney for that matter. They are all politicians, I don't love any of them. It's always a matter of who I think will suck less and who I think might actually be able to accomplish the things I want. So far, the only one taking shots is Perry. I think he might be the one to be warned. Sooner or later people are going to actually start looking at his record. I don't think that's going to be as big a win for him as you do.

Posted by: JackStraw at August 25, 2011 05:07 PM (TMB3S)

I never know when we're talking about you and me Jackstraw, vs. everybody else, so I'll confine my remarks to just me.  Yes, I know Romney was gonna get rolled on Masscare, he was a somewhat red governor in a deep blue state.

I get it.

All the more reason he should be campaigning on "it was a bad plan, it's created bigger costs, less access, problems".  Instead of, you know, defending it.

Romney's major problem is he's boring as fuck (I am now speaking to the general republican electorate).  It ain't a crime, but it's true.  He hasn't got much of a record to run on in contrast with Perry, even after his "record" becomes known, which incidentally I've been watching for 20 years so it's known to me.

Do I think Perry is more interesting to the general republican electorate?  I dunno, I have worried that another Texan isn't exactly a big plus on the national scene.  Hell, we're 0-1-1 on Texan presidents.

Still, he couldn't be less interesting than Mitt.  Not with a pulse.

222 Romney can let Big Media do his dirty work for him, but it won't help him much with the base.  We don't listen to Big Media anymore.

Romney can come out swinging at Perry, and pile on with Big Media.  We don't listen to Big Media anymore.

Either way, Romney loses.

However, Romney can come out swinging against BHO and take the slings and arrows of Big Media.  We don't listen to Big Media anymore.

His best option is numero tres.  i.e. He needs to double down on his BHO attacks to take the spotlight from Perry.

Instead of, you know, defending it. Of course. Because then nobody would be calling him a flip flopper. Rather, they would be saluting him and lining up behind him. No, what he should be doing is being even more aggressive in saying "This was a plan that was debated in MA for 2 years. I put my plan out there. Unfortunately, the legislature made many changes which I was unable to override because of their veto proof majority and Deval Patrick has changed it even further. However, the fact is the vast majority of MA citizens supported the basic idea of this plan as right for MA and now 97% of MA citizens have health insurance. Of course, I could have done nothing as Rick Perry did where over 26% of the population, most in the nation, have no healthcare but that was not responsible and not what the people of MA wanted." >>Romney's major problem is he's boring as fuck (I am now speaking to the general republican electorate). It ain't a crime, but it's true. No, actually I know you do read the blog, and you've seen others (not in this thread) who've pointed to his position on immigration, which is crime-focused, federal responsibility-focused, and weak on general round em up and the tuition thing.  Allen what's his name and mpur come to mind.  So no, not everyone has an identical view on this.

But yes, in this thread, he's pretty much getting a pass on that.  So I take your point. I don't give him a pass on it, but I also don't think it's hugely the "immigration bugaboo" you're making of it, and certainly not the "hey this was the biggest shit EVER 2 years ago man".  Because state tuition rates for the children of illegals was not that argument.  At all.

I don't give him a pass on it, but I also don't think it's hugely the "immigration bugaboo" you're making of it, and certainly not the "hey this was the biggest shit EVER 2 years ago man". Because state tuition rates for the children of illegals was not that argument. At all. Oh, but "Romneycare" was. Please. Nobody gave a wet fart about what Romney did in MA until Obama decided to make the federal gov't THE healthcare provider of all and then attempted to neuter Romney by saying, falsely, that he patterned his plan on MA. A) The plans are not alike at all and B) Obama turned the whole thing over to Pelosi and even he has no fucking idea what's in the plan. But you knew that and I have watched you jump to make those points. Or not. >>Perhaps. Or it could be he's been at it a hell of a lot longer than two weeks. And as mentioned before, he (was) the most viable in a terribly weak pool of wannabes. Frankly I'm surprised Bachmann is within a hundred miles of him. Wait. So the trumpeting here and far and wide that Perry is the new front runner means, what? Only good when it helps Perry? Last I looked, we don't have a national primary and Perry is up a couple points on Bachmann and about 7 over Romney in Iowa. The same social con Praise Jeebus state that Huck pulled his bullshit last time. Romney has not only not campaigned in Iowa it has been reported widely that he is "snubbing" Iowa and he is still in striking distance of the two social con candidates? Yea, I'll take that as a plus. >>Would you like a match for that strawman? Sheila Jackson Lee is from Texas too and she's also a fucking idiot. If we have to dig down into whose elected representatives are more or less conservative... the next thing you know we'll be buying each other a drink again and I'll be asking you "why the hell do you live there again?" and you'll answer "because it's hot a fuck down there right now". Nah, different strokes for different folks. We both know why jobs are plentiful in Texas. Low taxes and a metric fuckload of oil. Y'all keep taking in more people, sooner or later your taxes are going up one way or the other. That ain't conservative or liberal, that's just math. There won't be any stimulus to pay the bills next year, what then? Anyway, too bad you won't be coming here for a couple cocktails. Dumbass little breeze isn't going to stop me from cocktails by the ocean but I'm pretty sure Wiser will pussy out.

233 "Praise Jeebus"

Ah yes, more anti religious bigotry.

Didn't think a Mittens fan would want to talk religion.

Sucking Ethanol Subsidy cock has probably helped him there.

>> Ok. Let's pretend I'm the NY Jets and you're the Dallas Cowboys. I'm gonna whip you like you're gonna get whipped in a couple weeks.

That's the stupidest goddamn thing I've ever heard you say, and I've heard you say a lot.  We have a new kicker in camp, and everything.  Plus, Tony Romo played hide and seek in the woods, so we're ready.

...

Ok, how many points will you give me?

>> So the trumpeting here and far and wide that Perry is the new front runner means, what?

That Romney is a multi-million dollar funded fart in the wind.

>> There won't be any stimulus to pay the bills next year, what then?

The only viable answer is keep (my) taxes low, and bring more of those sissy corporations from CA and NY.  More jobs. And congressional seats.  Somebody has to fix congress, we're willing to help out.  Even with Sheila and RP.

>> Dumbass little breeze isn't going to stop me from cocktails by the ocean but I'm pretty sure Wiser will pussy out.

Sorry I couldn't make it this time, next time pal.  And bring Jackstraw.  I'll bet he misses the hell outta me.  Have fun, and cook your hobo to an internal body temp of 145 before eatin.

236 >>Dick Nixon at August 25, 2011 10:26 PM (fBpqg) You're an annoying little dope. You want attention? Ok, you got it. I was raised a Christian. I attended church every Sunday as long as I can remember growing up, my next door neighbor and best friend's dad was our Sunday School teacher. There is absolutely nothing Christian about the kind of religious bigotry the Huckabees and other evangelical bigots he and others like him have brought into politics. I despise the phoniness of it and those who practice it. It is the worst kind of bigotry, pretending your a Christian while practicing anything but it to slime your opponents. The shit Huck pulled in Iowa and beyond last cycle should shame anyone who actually believes the teachings of Christianity. It doesn't. And they aren't the type of Christians I want anything to do with. If that includes you, all the better.

237 You feel better now Jack? Wipe your tears, take a deep breath, and grab a handful of grow the f up.

Your little "Jeebus" comment shows a little bit of bigotry on your part.

As far as religious bigotry, are you referring to your boy Mittens? Mormonism has some pretty weird tenants and beliefs. However, his being a Mormon isn't what makes him a squish and soon to be out of the contention for the nomination.

He flip flops. His AGW stunt today shows it. Only took him 2 months to flip. Probably he saw Perry proclaim AGW a scam and reacted to it. He isn't proactive, he is reactive.

3rd place in Iowa won't kill his candidacy. But it will put it on life support.

Little Dope. Sort of describes your bullshit statements and fluff you spew.

>> Low taxes and a metric fuckload of oil.

And a 12 year governor who isn't so stupid as to try to punish the production of the same in the interest of AGW-worshipping communists who merely switched badges to push the same friggin "punish America" agenda, but rather understands that energy production is one of the keys to growing our economy instead of killing it.

Unlike a dozen or more other states, who have access to supplies, but refuse to encourage their production. And the jug-eared fuck who shut down gulf exploration.  And gave Brazil a brazillion dollars for offshore exploration.

He may be "yee-haw", but yee-haw when it comes to oil and natural gas production, earns my vote.

That stupid Texan.

Nah, a state who has never done that in it's existence. It's not like Perry invented it. Or did he? Maybe I'm wrong. Why don't you show me how Perry fought back against the state level powers who were dying to cripple the energy golden goose that has sustained Texas from it's beginning. I'll wait right here.

Posted by: JackStraw at August 25, 2011 07:40 PM (TMB3S)

240 Come on now, this should have been easy. Where is the evidence that Perry went to war to fight against all those evil Texans who wanted to shut down the one thing keeps the Texan economy humming and actually had the power to do anything? Ok, I'll let you off the hook. There was no serious opposition to the oil economy in Texas. Texas would be a disaster without it. Just like Alaska, hi Sarah. And you know it. The day the oil dries up, oil states are going to have to figure out how to pay for all the services that black gold pays for now.

Of course, I could have done nothing as Rick Perry did where over 26% of the population, most in the nation, have no healthcare but that was not responsible and not what the people of MA wanted."

========

Just a quick question, but it would appear you are making the claim that somehow it is the government's job to make sure that people have health insurance? And when exactly did this line of thinking become common-place in the conservative movement?

Posted by: Rich at August 25, 2011 08:33 PM (ldOlo)

242 Actually Ace, it's ok for Romney to give Perry some trouble, we don't a pansy for the GOP nominee.  Not that Perry is a pansy given Texas politics.  Hot house plants don't tend to do well outside in the real world, so toughening up Perry with some liberal shots from Romney would be reasonable primer.  When Perry puts on the game face with Obama after the primaries, you know Obama's crazies are not going to be holding back, in fact his Truther friends have already let lose on a bunch of nonsense in the hope something gets traction.

Posted by: dscott at August 25, 2011 08:35 PM (NGe7F)

243 I'm still waiting for a Romney guy to tell me something good about Romney. All of their arguments center around everyone else not being good. Perry is from Texas. Bachmann is crazy. This guy doesn't have experience. That guy is polarizing. Great. But instead of telling me everyone else's negatives, give me a positive about Mitt Romney. Oh, and make it an actual conservative positive, not this stuff about "appealing to the middle." Great, I'm not the middle. I want to know how he should appeal to me, the conservative.

Posted by: Rich at August 25, 2011 08:37 PM (ldOlo)

244 And I see JackStraw resorted to the what is fast becoming a norm among Romney guys, the religious bigot cry. It's identical to the left's position that the only reason people don't like Obama is because he's black. Well, of course, the only reason people don't like Romney is because he's a Mormon. What an easy way out.

Posted by: Rich at August 25, 2011 08:40 PM (ldOlo)

245 >>Just a quick question, but it would appear you are making the claim that somehow it is the government's job to make sure that people have health insurance? And when exactly did this line of thinking become common-place in the conservative movement? I'm pretty much based on the planet earth. On this planet, Medicare and Medicaid and multiple federal rulings that have made it law that hospitals that receive any federal funding, which for all intents and purposes mean all hospitals, must treat anyone who shows up at their doors for any reason. This includes illegals. Honest. Ask Rick Perry. You knew this, right?

Jackstraw, if oil is the only thing that keeps our economy producing the only goddam job growth any state with natural resources has, then why is California drying up?

Any supposition?

If Perry and the rest of our legislature, let's spread the credit around, wasn't stupid enough to go along with the EPA, then why is that a negative for Perry?

He didn't call them "fuckheads"?  You require evidence that Perry encouraged the positive job and economic growth that actually happened here?

You know what?  The electorate will not need your "required evidence".  The evidence itself, even if he didn't have fuck all to do with it, it will still resonate.

Bet me.

247 So, Rich, just a quick question. Now that you have been schooled on your lack of understanding of current law, what's your solution? Please don't say something intensely stupid like Tea Party Rules!!. Try hard to come up with something that sounds plausible meaning it can pass in Congress not just something that makes you want to stroke yourself. Let's hear it.

Posted by: JackStraw at August 25, 2011 09:14 PM (TMB3S)

248 >>Jackstraw, if oil is the only thing that keeps our economy producing the only goddam job growth any state with natural resources has, then why is California drying up? Holy shit. Two hours and that's what you come up with? California sucks more than us? No wonder the Cowboys are a leading indicator of how far you are going down. You know what, the electorate you speak of is in for a world of hurt. You keep pretending that your budget deficit wasn't made up by $6 billion of those federal Stimulus dollars you Texans insist you never need. OK. I asked before, I will ask again. You slashed your state budged this year to the bone. You laid off lots of state workers. You still needed billions from the feds. Where does that money come from next year?

Posted by: JackStraw at August 25, 2011 09:25 PM (TMB3S)

252

Sorry, I didn't know you were waiting on me and I decided to sleep.  Good call by me.

Here.  Most new jobs in healthcare, then professional services.  Plus all the other common criticisms of Perry, enjoy.

To answer your question, I suppose then we'd have cut (or will) $27BB from the budget instead of the $21BB we did. Perry never said he wouldn't accept federal money, he did refuse to accept $555MM in stimulus funding because of all the Obama-strings attached, mostly payoffs to unions.

This is a net benefit to Romney, why again?  Did he ever take a dollar from DC while he was governor?

...

Yeah, I thought so.
