— DrewM Another seat in play for Republicans to pick up.
Kohl is the sixth Democratic-aligned Senator to step aside in advance of the 2012 election. Two Republicans arenÂ’t running for reelection next year.Democratic strategists insisted that they will field a top-tier candidate in the open seat, noting that the fight between Gov. Scott Walker (R) and national unions over collective bargaining in the state earlier this year has energized the party.
Rep. Ron Kind and well as former Sen. Russ Feingold are sure to be leading candidates for Democrats. Former Rep. Tom Barrett, who ran lost to Walker last November, as well as Reps. Tammy Baldwin and Steve Kagen are also mentioned.
Obviously Paul Ryan is the big name on the GOP side but for what it's worth there's this from Wisconsin political guy Kevin Binversie.
Memo to DC pundits, a Russ Feingold v. Paul Ryan race will not happen. The two are personal and family friends. Quit daydreaming.
Should Ryan really be the first choice for conservatives? I think he can do far more good as a senior member of the House than a freshman member of the Senate. Now, if he's the only/best hope of winning the seat, that's one thing. If there's another viable conservative to run, isn't it better to have Ryan driving the budget/entitlement agenda from the House side?

If Paul Ryan would let personal feelings interfere in doing what's best for the country and the party, well then, just eff him.
I swore to never support Tommy Thompson for national office after he passed up a shoe-in run for the Senate. Same with Giuliani. I have never forgiven him for letting Hillary be a Senator.

It is more important to have the most conservative Senate members we can get even if it means losing someone from the House.
There are fewer Senate seats and Senators have to run state-level elections. This is why Senators are often more centrist tham Representatives. They know they are elected from a less homogenous electorate. A majority of House districts are set up so that a (R) or (D) would win under just about any circumstances.
I hope Ryan runs for the open Senate seat.

Ryan and Feingold are such good friends that Feingold has defended Ryan against the Left's smears about him and his plan.
If we know anything about Democrats, it's that friendship is a one-way street.

But is he more effective in the House (assuming he retains he seat)?
Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at May 13, 2011 07:36 AM (P+zzG)
I'm not sure that matters to Feingold or the Dems.
I think the Dems will insist he run, much like Tim Kaine in Virginia, because he's a "name" who can bring in easy support instead of having to heavily fund an unknown challenger.
Kaine was pretty unpopular in Virginia by the time he left, even before he became the DNC mouthpiece, and yet he's running there anyway because they gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.

BTW this is OT, but in all the hysteria over the Common event at the White House, I didn't read Big Hollywood. I knew Common opposed interracial relationships, which is fine with me. People can date who they want. I missed that he said he doesn't date outside his race...but DOES sleep with women of other races. That's fucking racist and offensive. Women outside your race are useful for sex and nothing else? That's dishonest and stupid. I'm sure those women thought they had a chance for a relationship. What a douchebag. I've always dated outside my race, and I find that attitude disgusting.
Sorry for OT rant, back to politics.

The one thing you could always say about Bush - he respected his role as C-in-C. He loved and respected our soldiers.
Sorry if this has already been mentions: from GWP:
Leadership: When Asked About Osama’s Killing – Bush Praises CIA and SEALs
Appearing before the crowd of 1,800 at the glitzy Bellagio resort and casino, Bush appeared light-hearted and relaxed in talking about bin LadenÂ’s death.
When asked by forum moderator Melissa Lee of CNBC how he felt upon learning the news, Bush said he was “not overjoyed,” explaining that the campaign to track down the 9/11 mastermind was done not “out of hatred but to exact judgment.”
The development is ultimately a victory for the American people, he said.
“The guy is dead. That is good,” Bush said of bin Laden. “Osama’s death is a great victory in the war on terror. He was held up as a leader.”
“The intelligence services deserve a lot of credit. They built a mosaic of information, piece by piece,” he said, claiming no credit for himself.
“I met SEAL Team Six in Afghanistan. They are awesome, skilled, talented and brave,” he added. “I said, ‘I hope you have everything you need. One guy said, ‘We need your permission to go into Pakistan and kick ass.’”

I don't think they care. They'd rather take a chance on a guy who can fundraise without a lot of DNC help than someone who has a legit shot of winning, as it helps stop the bleeding in other states.
Every bit of cash the DNC has to send to Virginia or Wisconsin to fund a candidate who can actually win cuts the money they can send to shore up incumbents in danger, such as in Ohio, Montana, Missouri, etc.

Offhand, I'd guess VA, WI, ND, MO, FL, NE, OH, and MT as likely bets. MN, PA, MI, and several others are doable due to the changing political climate, though PA may be tough if people vote for Casey regardless of him being a snake in the grass.
Even "just" winning the 8 seats I listed and retaining the other seats would still give the GOP a strong Senate majority, which would be enough to block the Dems and possibly break a filibuster. The latter would depend on how vulnerable red-state Dems like Begich, Pryor, and Landrieu, amongst others, are feeling.

PA tends to vote for people they've heard of. Casey is only dimly aware of his own existence and the oldsters in PA will vote for him because they still fondly remember his dad. Moreover, he doesn't do much to get in the papers.
MN would require a very good candidate. Minnesotans are generally blue, although Oberstar's loss was a shock and an indication that the Iron Range isn't reliably blue anymore. All that's left is the twin cities.
Interestingly, MN statewide races have all featured third parties recently. I don't think they like the DFL very much, but MN voters just can't quit 'em.

Exactly. As Reagan-Stockman demonstrated, without a line-item veto (and nerves of steel) you can't control spending from the executive branch.
All checks are authorized by Congress.
So, keep this excellent, bold leader Ryan right where he is. A weaker man in his position will bring only FAIL.

Promise 100 Billion? do a couple hundred Million... Promise to split spending bills up? keep the same big omnibus bills.... Talk about drill drill drill? Nothing (and a new CO2 bill just slipped through Congress with all kinds of crap in it..).... Talk about Nuc Power? Yet all we get are Blow Jobs (windmills)...
Washington is broken... and handing Power back to the Republicans just puts a different face on the exact same problem.

I wonder. If Ryan would announce first, and if for some reason Feingold saw an opportunity to get back into the Senate riding on Obama's coattails, would he stick with that "gentleman's agreement." I really don't think that friendship has as much hold over dems as power does.
I think it would make them uncomfortable but I've read some
articles in which they both put politics above friendship. But my question is more whether Feingold would be the right candidate for the Dems? Some of the other names on that list would be better for them.

I think Feingold is the best choice for Obama. As everybody's said, he raises his own money and he brings out the moonbats. That's what Obama wants, hence, that's what the Democrats want.

Mooo-ooovin' on up,
To the tooo-oop
To a deluxe apartment
in the sky-y-y-y...
Well, not really, but I do have to go carry boxes from my wife's current Cratchit-style "office" to a new, purportedly better, one up one flight of stairs and down the hall. At least that's how it's been described to me. Probably means I'll be making dozens of trips through all sorts of rat-mazes and spontaneously closing doors.

M80, Ryan and Sensenbrenner were probably trying to keep from laughing out loud went they made that "deal". Moore (D-Crazytown) is in a district that was created for one reason, getting a minority to congress. Nobody white or sane has a snowball's chance in Hell of getting elected there.

OT: From the sidebar, an Italian leader is bragging about possibly winging Kadaffy. And admits that the source is a Catholic Bishop who opposes the campaign.
"The international pressure has likely led Gaddafi to decide to seek shelter in a safe location. I tend to think that he fled Tripoli, not Libya."
An official at the NATO operations center in Naples repeated NATO's line that it was not targeting individuals in bombing raids that have hit Libyan capital"
I guess that's it's nice to know that we're not the only ones with leaders whose declaratory policy and actual policy tend to 'diverge'.

@ Ensign ethics probe:
"It is a cautionary tale," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Ethics Committee, said in announcing the panel's findings on the Senate floor Thursday afternoon, a highly unusual move. "It shows that our actions, all of them, have consequences."

The 60-year-old woman was reportedly attacked in a supermarket in the town of Los Cristianos on the island.
A Bulgarian man, believed to be homeless, has been detained by Spanish police.
Spanish media reported that witnesses saw the man enter a Chinese supermarket at the Valdes Shopping Centre and, without saying a word, attacked the woman with a knife, cutting her head off.
snip~
Manuel Reveron, a local a councillor for citizen security said: "Apparently this gentleman without any motive or any reason, although for this there is no reasoning, entered the shop and then cut this woman's neck and took the head in his hand outside up to the sidewalk.

Former Senatorial candidate Tim Michels is also rumored to be interested after replenishing his personal fortune. The problem is, after he pulled off the upset of favored establishment candidate Russ Darrow (and a few others) in the 2004 primary, the entire Republican party apparatus abandoned the race and he was crushed by Feingold.

Yeah, let's all unite after the primary....

First, the D open seats:
NM, ND, WI, CT, VA, HI
They are all possible pickups, with CT and HI being the least likely of course - HI is possible only if Lingle runs, but she is quite RINO-ish.
Then the D vulnerable seats:
OH, PA, WV, MO, NE, FL, MI, MT
And we have to defend our own vulnerable seats:
MA, NV, IN, ME
It IS possible to get to 60 but we would need some incredible luck and the right candidates.

We had an excellent Congressman in WI-3 for 16 years, who came in with Reagan in 1980. Kind is a good-looking cipher who's benefited from having the district redrawn by a Democratic-controlled legislature, and the WEA (teacher's union) is solidly behind him. Outside his home turf, he's very beatable because, well, he's not all that bright -- charming and personable, but not much upstairs.
He was going to run for Governor last year until he found out how bad the state's finances really were... c'mon Ron, go for it this time!!
