Witches can't avoid taxman anymore in Romania
— Purple Avenger

Now that the Romanian govt has declared witchcraft to be an official govt recognized "profession", its practicioners are going to have to pony up.

...The move, which went into effect Saturday, is part of the government's drive to crack down on widespread tax evasion in a country that is in recession.

In addition to witches, astrologists, embalmers, valets and driving instructors are now considered by labor law to be working real jobs, making it harder for them to avoid income tax...

For the moment, it appears dowsers, vampires, and witch doctors are still safe from the keen eye of the tax man though.

The Romanian govt has provided a handy

table of nominal service labor values to be

used for tax reporting purposes.
Potion mixing$20/hr
Astral projections$15/incident
Tarot readings$15/incident
One day bad luck curse$10/incident
Persistent lifetime bad luck curse$100/incident
Curses resulting in physical harm$200/incident
Transformations into a newt$500/incident

The US Congress House Ways and Means committee recently formed an exploratory sub-committee to research these new and exciting Romanian revenue enhancement strategies to see if they can be applied in the USA.

1 I didn't realize that Obama wanted to tax Helen Thomas and Nancy Pelosi.

They are witches, right?

First?

3 F&F on now discussed this extremely stupid idea that congress going to the last minute to keep the tax rates the same going into next year is going to cause a delay in getting your tax refunds back.

The government and the news media keep pushing this stupid shit. I have yet to here from any of them why the 2011 tax rates effect the 2010 returns.

4 As for taxing witches in Romania, out government took care of that long ago. They actually ruled that ALL professions must pay income tax regardless of legality.

Then promptly exempted themselves.

6 I wonder if Zombie is considered a profession?  I've never seen any zombies that were inclined to fill out tax forms.  Collections could get ugly.

7 And more on tax bail outs. Pritchard, AL has stopped sending out retirement checks to retired city workers. Although nobody actually said it I gather they are bankrupt. The gov of AL came on and talked about spending and how the oil spill hurt AL. These are all first steps in looking for a bailout. Shit if we are going to send another 4.2B to NYC why not Pritchard, AL as well?

In any case why is Pritchard bankrupt even as they are not union with cushy retirements? Try checking out their demographics. They are roughly 85% minority. IOW, they have no tax base.

The solution, allow the city to go bankrupt, disband the city government, and dis-incorporate the city. The city owe you money? See them with the other creditors in bankruptcy court.

10 I just read another government PR announcement on the tax return deal (this one from CNN/Money) and yet again no explanation of how a deal to extend tax rates from 2010 into 2011 & 12 affected tax returns for 2010.

How about it some of you Morons in the tax business, how is this?

Posted by: Vic at January 03, 2011 02:43 AM (M9Ie6)

11 OK I think I found it. The lame *uck session tax extention deal contained the "annual" AMT fix to keep it out of the middle class. So if they had not passed it a bunch of lower middle-class people would have been hit with the AMT in 2010.

Republicans passed a bill way back in the Gingrich congress to permanently eliminate this abortion remnant from LBJ which has NEVER worked like it was advertised to. Clinton vetoed it.

There was talk during the Bush years to pass it again but it got held up by bickering from some of the RINOs (McCain) who were going to join forces with the Dems.

This POS needs to go permanently. The Dems use it for a political football to force the Repubs to give ground on other items year after year. It needs to go and it is a hill to die on. If nothing else the Repubs should pass a permanent fix by pegging it to the price of gold as a method of indexing it for inflation.

One reason is the Education credit for College.  You could pay it this year, for NEXT semester, and take it off your taxes this year.  However, if they had to extended the credit, you could not have earned the credit for next year.

I think there are a couple of business type credits which work the same way... so it should only affect a very few people, who itemize everything...

Not a Tax pro... just going by past experience with this stuff...

27 Here is an observation for you:

Notice that whenever a city/state is in trouble financially it is always the least well paid people who are put on furlough/ have their salaries cut etc; but the highest paid people like Mayors/Governors City Councilmen/State Senators or representatives never get furloughed or have their salaries cut?

Since it is the high payed people who have far more responsibility for the causing the problems wouldn't it make more sense to cut the high paid people first in order to prevent them from causing problems in the future?

This sounds like a good amendment for state constitutions to me; it would clean up a lot of shenanigans in local government.

31 Here is an additional observation:

How could liberals object; it is a progressive penalty to make the highest paid people bear the highest percentage of the budget under run costs. Don't liberals believe in soaking the wealthy? Oh wait; they want to soak the productive rich, not the leeching rich. Never mind.
