1 Yay! Thanks dri.

We should be up by about four by my count at this point.  We've had some great oh-so-close shots. Just not connecting.

And that's a great commercial - I don't remember that one from back in the day.

Drapes are kind of drab. I think a whimsical wall mural might be nice.

14 Listening to ESPN Radio yesterday and the whining has already begun about nobody paying attention to the woman's soccer team. There's a reason for that, it's a woman's team and it's soccer.

15 Soccer does not fit into the AoSHQ lifestyle.

Juice boxes and orange slices aren't really the moron way.

16 Maybe, if you advertise free pizzas and beer, people will show up. Otherwise, Americans will just watch baseball.

BTW:  anyone know if Hope Solo or Megan Rapinoe are married?

19 What I like about the women's world cup is the MBM hasn't been forcing the meme that soccer is cool down our throats. It isn't cool, but I hope the ladies do well. Oh, and Hope Solo is a hottie mchotterson.

38 If I want to watch people run, I'll go to a track meet where they have all different kinds and lengths of races, but somebody wins every one of them. Okay, soccer is like a marathon, but nobody is running in the same direction, and often nobody wins. And then there's the faggy shorts, and the swan dives. Other than that, I like it just fine. ps. Oh, and the little cards. I bet they have Hello Kitty on them don't they?

Posted by: Ronno at July 17, 2011 11:51 AM (nQR0p)

49 Meh soccer sucks because it just isn't very good. In American football you see good individual plays with every down. Soccer is sloppy, passes are inaccurate, those receiving passes usually don't receive them. There are no plays really, there are certain things they try to do in certain situations but not everyone is on the same page or even at the same part of the field. Every down in football and every pitch in baseball has some sort of play on and that is why they score more often. Soccer to me is a bunch of people running around looking for an opportunity instead of creating an opportunity to either score or defend against a score. That's why it's boring.

53 Tho seriously, I never got the instinctive rejection of soccer by Americans. I'd rather watch soccer 24/7 than a single NBA game Exactly. NBA is the same isolation plays over and over. Women's soccer can be especially good because the field is so big for them that they have to rely on ball movement.

Sure, I hope we win and it's good and all that, but that doesn't mean I have to watch it. The Euro shitstains in the crowd are nauseating, too. Buncha bobbleheaded mofos who you just know will pizz and moan if 'Murika ends up winning. Fuck 'em all sideways with a pair of soccer cleats.

65 59: True. Especially when PKs are involved. American Football is the perfect sport,so in comparison soccer looks like garbage. But i'll take it over a lot of stuff American's seem to have no problem watching, like Golf. Why on earth do so many people watch golf?

Posted by: BSR at July 17, 2011 11:57 AM (BH4RQ)

66 And winning a game by shootout is an abomination, whether in soccer or hockey.  My solution is to have 5 minute extra periods, but remove a player from each team in each period.  When it's finally goalie against goalie, somebody will win.

Of course, nobody asked me.

75 Compared to most women's sports, soccer seems to select less for masculinity than others. Maybe because it's more about endurance than raw strength or explosive movements. Just compare soccer women to basketball women.

That's one problem with women's sports. It often comes down to who has the manliest lesbians. Don't get me wrong, I'm a red-blooded American so I want our lesbians to kick the ass of the all those foreign lesbians. USA! USA!

In men's sports the more masculine men tend to have an advantage. In women's sports the more feminine women ... tend to not bother trying out for the team in the first place.

104 Re: our lesbians versus their lesbians... I had a great story told to me by one of the Canadian women's hockey team back in '99... her brother was playing goalie for us in New Orleans, and she came down to visit. Anyway, she couldn't have been more charming, and the conversation eventually came around to playing hockey. I tried to delicately ask her about the locker room, and she just grinned at me and said, "You mean, are we a bunch of heavy-boot, flannel-wearing, tobacco-chewing, shaved-sides-of-head dykes?" Needless to say, I was kind of embarrassed, but she said something to the effect of, "...I'm one of the few straight players in the room, but it sure is the damnedest thing to have the team break into a spontaneous chorus of 'You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman'." That was a fun night.

123 One of the problems with soccer, at least at the professional level, is that so much of it is an exercise in futility and the law of averages doesn't help you out like in hockey.

Soccer vs. American football could be a metaphor for how each culture sees economics.

For Europe and Latin America, economics is about having some skill, but really about getting lucky once. You get very few chances and might as well play defensively.

For America, it's a steady progression: Small successes count for something and if you're close enough, you will stand a very good chance of scoring a little or you can take a risk to score more than twice as much.

It's also one of the few sports in which the coach plays a decisive role during gameplay.

I think it was George Carlin who said putting some randomly place landmines around a baseball field would really liven up the game.

I don't see why that wouldn't work for soccer as well. Either that or make the players wear and use single shot flamethrowers.

132 Yeah, I don't think we need to be sensitive about the fact that lesbians are a tiny minority that are hugely over-represented in elite women's athletics. It's just a fact of the world. I'm happy to cheer for American lesbians to beat Japanese lesbians. I'm happier to cheer for hot feminine American chicks, of course.

In men's sports, dudes who naturally have higher levels of testosterone tend to have an advantage ... same with women's sports. Which is why men's sports are dominated by manly looking dudes with jutting square jawlines and bulging muscles .... and so are women's sports.

The elite training also interferes with the normal menstrual cycle, so female athletes often aren't flooding their bodies with the same monthly hormones that normal women are.

Still, soccer seems to produce a fair # of hot chicks. Tennis more so. WNBA ... not so much. Selecting for height and strength is probably not a good way
to select for hot chicks.

"It is with an heavy heart and great sadness that I must announce that I will be forgoing my already planned vacation in Martha's Vineyard with my beautiful young family because of the Republicans refusal to budge on raising taxes.  Because of the evil George Bush and the members of his diabolical party, I will not be able to enjoy sunset walks along the beach with my beloved rib of my rib, heart of my heart, Michelle.  Because of the nasty, partisan political games being waged by Eric Cantor and the like, my children will, like millions of other black kids, be forced to go on vacation without their father.  They will not be able to fully enjoy their $50.00 ice cream cones, their palatial suites at the most prestigious hotel in Martha's Vineyard, or their protected private beach with gorgeous views without their father accompanying them.

Republicans have proven once again that they have sunk to their lowest level in history, and it is completely unprecedented as well as racist. Despite their best efforts at thwarting me and the will of the people, I will soldier on. I will persevere and I will work tirelessly night and day, fully focused like a laser in helping to get more people back to work.  And I will continue to fight for what's right for America, at continual great personal sacrifice. Thank you and may God bless America!

And what does the Koran say about scantily dressed women who choke on penalty shots during a World Cup? Actually, it wasn't a choke so much as the Japanese team had probably scouted Hope Solo very very well. Did you see the smile on Japan's coach when the penalty kicks were announced - she was happy as could be. Lots of confidence in her team. Also, note the speed with which the Japanese team approached the ball for the kick....it was quite a bit slower than the U.S. team's approach and probably threw our goalie off her timing. Very well coached and excellent disciplined team play on Japan's part. Congratulations Japan.

Hey Penalty Kicks to decide a tie are like the Electoral College to decide the US Presidential election.  It's all part of the system that folks knew would apply going in.  And complaining about the system is for pussies--or for Al Gore in 2000.

That said it was a hell of a game. The US team showed style, grace, speed and power.  I can't tell how many times some 5' 10" tall US woman ran down a Japanese munchkin from behind and stole the ball.  But it was a lot.   This was one of  those days where the US strikers--who were bombing the goal like Curtis LeMay bombed Tokyo through much of the game--needed to have their sights recalibrated by just a hair.  For them this is one of those days best described as "some days  you're the dog, and some days  you're the hydrant".  They were just that little bit off, or otherwise they would have blown the Japanese team clear back to Japan from Frankfurt.

It was a good game for both sides. If you didn't like it, or if you still don't like women's soccer, well tough noogies to you.

He's going to console the ladies soccer team by telling them that he's sure they'll go all the way at the 2012 Chicago Olympics.

387 Y-not, that's why it seems so strange to me, who the hell does that.  Well, attention-grabbing celebs, maybe, and JEF does love him some attention.

I've been reading stuff by Ulsterman on Triond who's supposedly hearing from a "white house insider" and he's written all kinds of stuff having to do with distracting the American people away from different shit that has been going on in this administration.  It could be something big, or it could be an announcement that he's bought a low-flush toilet for the family bathrooms in the WH and has a TP dispenser that dispenses 1 sheet at a time.  Who knows?

a personal announcement, eh?

"Some say, 'That President Obama, his hair sure is looking a lot more grey these days.'  Let me be clear, my hair is no greyer today than it was when I first took office.  It changes color depending on the lighting and what color neck tie I am wearing.  If it appears inordinately grey (which it is not), then that is because my predecessor, George W. Bush, put dimmers and soft white lightbulbs in all the lamps and fixtures."

401 Yeah, probably is personnel.  People often get those 2 words mixed up, personal and personnel.  Just like principle and principal.  Until it's done, tho, I'm gonna keep my fingers X'd that JEF has had enough and wants out of the WH.

415 Yet another late, dead-thread footnote from me. Dropped by Mom's yesterday and she had the game on. Went from 1-0 to 2-2 while I wasn't paying attention. Had to read this thread to find out what happened. Mom watches golf, too, but then she's 91, so maybe this action is fast for her. (Ha ha, sorry Mom.) I told Mom, golf and soccer exist to make baseball seem more interesting. Hardly even knew what soccer was when they dropped me in a prep high school in '67. After three years of mandatory sports and hard labor summer jobs, I quit being a pasty chubbo and learned how to work and endure. Still do. Wasn't by choice, but I'm still grateful. (Thanks, Mom!) I played soccer hard for 3 years, got good at it, and had fun when I wasn't hurting. Halfback was good for me, as I can't dribble and I wasn't heavy enough to be a fullback, plus I got a couple nice assists in now and then, and was co-captain of the B team. More than I ever expected to be. Final HS tournament, our team wasn't the best, but we had great defense, so we held the line and beat "better" teams -- sort-of. First game, we were still tied after double overtime, and won on corner kicks. The other team was happy about that, you bet. Second game, we were still tied after double overtime, also tied on corner kicks, and won on coin toss. Now we had several other "better" teams po'd at us. Third and final game, we were still tied in the second overtime, but absolutely lead-footed, gasping, our fantastic goalie dragging, one fullback playing with (as we later found) a concussion, and we were finally overrun. (I think our coach made a few mistakes, not putting some of the lesser members in at the end in his desperation to win, but I was just a kid what do I know.) That was exciting. Yay, team! and all that. Still, watch a soccer game on TV? Oh, look! paint drying! Digital ipad shoe cameras available now!
