— DrewM Um, ok.
Rep. Chris Lee (R-N.Y.) resigned from the House Wednesday evening effective immediately, an announcement that came just hours after a Web site reported that the married congressman had sent a shirtless image of himself to a woman he met on Craigslist."I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents," Lee said in a statement announcing his resignation. "I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness."
Lee's decision to vacate his Upstate New York seat came after Gawker, a gossip Web site, posted the shirtless image and what it said was correspondence between him and a 34-year-old woman.
The woman, who Gawker described as a 34-year-old government employee from Maryland but did not name, told the gossip site she posted an ad last month on the "Women for Men" forum seeking "financially & emotionally secure" men who don't "look like toads." That same day, she got a response from a person who said his name was Christopher Lee, describing himself as 39-year-old lobbyist, "a very fit fun classy guy. Live in Cap Hill area. 6ft 190lbs blond/blue." In follow-up e-mails he attached photos -- one in a blue polo, the other shirtless.
Dude, you're in Congress for God's sake, well you were in Congress. If you need a little action on the side, you don't have to go on Craigslist. Here's the photo if you're interested.
Idiot. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Lee represented NY-26 which is out in the western part of the state. He was originally elected in 2008 (so it's probably a pretty safe Republican district if he won that year) and was reelected in November with 73% of the vote, so it's likely the GOP can hold on in the special election that Gov. Cuomo will now call.
On the bright side...he didn't go full Favre, nor did he emulate Eric "The Tickler" Massa. At least we got that going for us.

more info
The original gawker story.
"Craigslist Congressman Resigns"
"The 26th Congressional District of New York covers much of western New York. About half its people are in the suburbs of Buffalo in Erie and Niagara Counties, though none in the city of Buffalo itself. It extends from the city limits of Buffalo to the city limits of Rochester and includes that cityÂ’s northwestern suburbs. In between is rural and small town territory, with many towns bearing the classical names sprinkled by state commissioners across Upstate New York."
Congressman Lee's website.
"Chris is currently serving his second term representing New York's 26th Congressional District in Western New York."
Fox made it sound like he was brand new, he's not.
He's on the Ways and Means committee

Breaking on AP:
Republican Chris Lee resigned his Republican held congressional seat today. The Republican was caught soliciting whores like Republican Tom Foley. But unlike Republican Foley, shady Republican Lee was using craiglist list like the craigslist killer used craigslist. Republican Lee's action brought back memories of Republican Larry Craig, who solicited men in dirty bathrooms and then resigned. Republican leaders had no comment on Republican Lee, or about his Republican seat. Republican everywhere are distraught over the actions over Republican Lee. More on Republican Lee to follow

Because he can't be trusted. In a damned moment of selfishness, he not only cheated on his wife, but he left us questioning his character and intelligence. Are we settling for leaders like this? Surely there were other signs that he was a dork. His constituents must be dorks, too.
When will dorks learn that there is a right way and a wrong way to cheat on wives?

There are two types who get into power. The first are the kind who naturally want it, are smart enough and manipulative enough to get it, and so they generally have a history of screwing around. The second type are those who are very smart, very dedicated, and who achieve through hard work a position of authority and respect. And they often have spent their entire lives up to that point being ignored. All of a sudden, pretty girls are giving them attention, and it's like a drug.

Oh, crap!!! I can't believe I've been oblivious about this all night, when he's MY f-ing (or non-f-ing, I guess) congressman! I actually saw the photo on a news channel, but didn't realize it was my Rep., and turned my attention away (it being a stupid story).
Drew nailed it (unlike Lee, I guess!) - the only words for this are "WTF!?!"
Being a constituant, I can report on several things:
1) The district is probably best thought of as the mostly-rural area between Buffalo and Rochester. Commie bitch Slaughter's heavily-gerrymandered district runs all along it to the north, from Rochester to Niagara Falls. There's a very-safe Dem district or two to the SW, for the bulk of Buffalo.
2) Before this last election, Lee was one of only two Republican congressmen in the state (Peter King, on Long Island, being the other.) Yet, we're losing two districts for the next election, IIRC, so this one might essentially go away.
3) From what I've seen of Rep. Lee, I wouldn't call him a RINO. My mother was a card-carrying member of the Religious Right, and she seemed to like him just fine.
4) I wouldn't call ANY congressional district in the People's Republic of NY "safe" for a Republican, but we do seem to lean Republican in this small patch.
5) Some politicians (of either stripe) you just expect sleazy/crazy shit from. Hell, remember that bizarre soap opera we had regarding the control of our Senate a couple of years ago? This guy seemed the exception. Just a clean-cut seeming family man, who had delved into politics after having some sucess in the business world. Kind of a newbie to politics in general, IIRC. He replaced Tom Reynolds, who had become one of the highest ranked Republicans before retiring a couple of years ago.
6) Oh, geez! Now he's the lead story on Red Eye. This is SO WTF!?! - os SO MANY levels!!

It's true, I don't want to see the wife in the spotlight given the circumstances.
And I'd say that media advisers who require the wife to stand in the announcement are as wrong on their "desired" audience affect as they are when touting "electability" in order to elevate the worst progressive candidate onto the "conservative" GOP ticket. Media advisers and advertisers are twisted individuals, as television commercials make evident. I don't like the way they think, and I won't go along with their messaging.

So last night I'm watching Fox News and Greta Van Susteren mentions "a congressman" and his adolescent gratification shenanigan. Wondering if he's a Dem or Rep, my first thought was to watch for the "D" after his name and if so, check to see if the Fox Team would once again, "mistakenly" put the wrong letter. But his name had no letter at all and their was no mention of party affiliation. None of which, comes as any surprise at all.
