— DrewM Give the Devil his due...Dave Weigel called it, "Michael Bay Presents: "Pawlenty""
If invasion by space aliens or a cataclysmic asteroid strike is your number one concern going into the 2012 election...you've go your man. There's also a good chance Bruce Willis will be his Vice President and Steve Buscemi will have a small but amusing role in the administration. No word on if Liv Tyler or Kate Beckinsale will play the love interest.
I know one of the knocks on Pawlenty is he's not the most charismatic guy in the world but I'm not sure this solves that problem. I really hope this is a tongue in cheek kind of thing to get some attention. If so, well played. If not...oh boy.

Drew, I suspect you aren't a Pawlenty fan, and this is why you are bagging on this ad.
Is it dramatic? Yes. If it was in the service of your chosen candidate, I suspect your support and praise would be more effusive.

Al Gore came with a couple of thousand votes ...
John Kerry won the nomination ...
charisma seems nice to match Obama's charisma ... but should we really be looking for an empty suit who lies thru his teeth ?
you don't fight smoke and mirrors with smoke and mirrors ...
hard boiled facts and proven leadership ...
the primaries will bring out the winner ...

I don't think it's bad. There are different ways to take on Obama. He's not going to go gloom and doom- elect me or we're all going to hell. He's showing he would take on Obama's policy wreck with optimism and a healthy dose of American exceptionalism.

Paul Ryan would be great, but he won't run. He's already on the record multiple times saying that he won't do it now since he has young kids.
Mitch Daniels is clearly the smartest guy running - and it's not even close. He also has - far and away - the most conservative record of governance.
Unfortunately, his "truce on social issues" comments will probably be enough to convince the average voter that he's some kind of McCainish moderate.

In 2012 Romney will be the nominee and it will not matter wheter you vote for him or not, it will not win
As much as the troll is loathesome (and haven't we schooled you about picking an alias that reveals your contempt for the working class, troll?) he may be right, but I doubt it. Troll assumes 1996 all over again. But unlike Bill Clinton, the Obamunist is too ideological to triangulate. Clinton wasn't all about the Leftism. Clinton was all about -- Clinton.
Why troll may be right:
--the primary process has NOT changed. Front loaded, winner take all. Mitt gets a plurality and takes it.
--the Huckster siphons off Tea Party votes. Tea party votes are not all about the finances, people, like it or not.
Why troll may be wrong:
--The Tea Party's new involvement means *they*, not the Establishment, get the plurality, if they can unite behind one candidate and not the Huckster.
--Mormonism is still seen as too funny

Pawlenty's problem isn't lack of excitement or charisma.
It's that he's just a time-serving squish of a Governor who is flattered that some of his backers tell him he could be Prez.
If we're going to settle for that, let's at least get Romney, who also has business experience and can self-fund a big campaign against Toonces.
We can do better, people...lots better (John Bolton, Mike Pence, Bobby Jindal, others...)

T-Paw is McCain Part Deux. He can get the moderate Democrat vote, and the RINO vote, but the base is going to reject him just like McCain...He can't Win.....and if everybody knows what good for them....they should rule out T-Paw right off the bat...so that the race can be more competitive....instead of people like T-Paw chewing up all the air time.
Your already stareting to see the media pick him for us....that's means if they have to go Republican...that's who they want...So that should be signaling to everybody exactly what he is......IYKWIMAITYD!

I think Daniels has actually been governing as a limited government conservative, rather than just bullshitting everyone.
The way Indiana has been able to cut state government while improving public services is extremely impressive.
Daniels creation of Hoosier Health Savings Accounts, and the implementation of accountability standards for all state employees are also solid achievements.
Right now, Daniels is my guy unless he does something to convince me otherwise. (He's also good friends with Ryan, and I think would be likely to tap him as a Vice Presidential candidate.)

Curm, since we made an exception in '08 to the old rule that our President should have experience and a track record of achievement, perhaps in the emergency that looms in '12 we might think about going with someone who doesn't fit the accepted norms.
And before a certain name appears that crops up anytime the Presidency is mentioned, I'll add that West is at least doing something by being in Congress, not yammering about shit from a position of no responsibility or power.

Personally I think RNC would be terrible for her for listed reasons
I have to disagree for he following reasons:
1. RNC gets donors from big donors, Palin=small donors.
I see no reason why she couldn't get donations from big donors, and moreover, that she does gets lots of donations from small donors is a HUGE strength, as it ends the "GOP only for rich fatcats" liberal media meme.
2. RNC chair is supposed to shut up, and stay neutral. Def not Palin
Precisely the problem. See Steele, Michael.
3. She would have to live in DC without having minimum influence at all. If she had to live in DC, she would like influence (President)
What influence she had was campaigning for other GOP candidates. We need more of that mama grizzly spirit in the RNC.

As I said, he flip-flopped from when he was a huge supporter of it. Flip-flopping is not so bad if you have a rational explanation for why you changed your position. So far he has had none.
A simple explanation that he "believed the science but now saw that it was a fraud" would go a long way to supporting his change.

I do. The big donors hate her. Hate. Her. Fucking. Guts. You guys think *I'm* anti-Palin? You should see the big GOP money men in NYC/Connecticut or L.A. or Florida or Dallas...these are high finance types/Wall Street guys, lawyers, etc. And they hated Michael Steele for the same reason they would hate Palin: they want a quietly competent, no-alarms-no-surprises guy to run the show, not a walking celebrity TV show.
And as for your other point, small donations (i.e. an 'appeal to the little people') ain't gonna cut it. That's a drop in the ocean compared to the RNC's (and a national campaign's) needs. Money is a fact of life in electoral politics, and the most important sums of it always -- always -- come from big donors. Remember the myth of Obama's "grass-roots" powered donor base? It was just that: a myth. He got the vast majority of his money from big bundlers on Wall Street and Silicon Valley.

I'm not really carrying a torch for Pawlenty, but I have a serious question: do you *honestly* -- as in if you had to put money on it, or there was a gun to your head -- think Pawlenty or any other GOP candidate would push any AGW legislation now? Or ever, in the future? Not only is it wildly unpopular with us (i.e. the base), it's pretty much wildly unpopular with the nation at this point.
I understand holding AGW pandering against Pawlenty -- I do too, sort of -- but I honestly doubt it's something that would ever matter going forward. If I thought for a second that it was, that candidate would be crossed off my list instantly.

Give Preibus a chance. He worked wonders in Wisconsin and that's the kind of thing the Chairman needs to do: Build the party.
I have no qualms with Preibus. I just think party building, fundraising, organizing, rallying the base, and connecting to (or for the GOP, reachng out to) working class America are great jobs for Sarah.

No - you have it exactly wrong. It was the opposite: they got enough small donors (or at least as many as in past cycles, in roughly proportional dollar numbers) but they utterly hemorrhaged big donors -- bundlers in particular -- in part because Steele just didn't want to do his fucking job (80% of the RNC Chair's job is sitting on the phone and fundraising, not going on radio talk shows and making an ass of one's self), and in part because those big donors were turned off by Steele's profligacy.
Reince Priebus's #1 priority is to get back the reams of big money donors we lost during the Steele era. And the job is just going to be that much harder because Steele left us in such a big financial hole.
Posted by: Jeff B. at January 24, 2011 02:31 PM (NjYDy)
The *same* reasons? Steele was a walking celebrity TV show? Please elaborate. Whatever her negatives with the Establishment, Sarah is NOT Steele.
Moreover, might the establishment BE the problem?
Remember the myth of Obama's "grass-roots" powered donor base? It was just that: a myth. He got the vast majority of his money from big bundlers on Wall Street and Silicon Valley.
I am well aware of that. But understand that big businesses buy "protection" from both parties, and certain "creative" fruity wealthy industry types will never give a dime to the GOP.

Most of the pols (yes, even her) have given at least a nod to the AGW scam:
“We Alaskans are living with the changes that you are observing in Washington,” she said. “The dramatic decreases in the extent of summer sea ice, increased coastal erosion, melting of permafrost, decrease in alpine glaciers and overall ecosystem changes are very real to us.”
“Many believe that in order to mitigate these long term and systematic changes it will require a national and global effort to decrease the release of human produced greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,” she said. “However, simply waiting for low carbon emitting renewable capacity to be large enough will mean that it will be too late to meet the mitigation goals for reducing CO2 that will be required under most credible climate change models.

And here's the thing--and I know many here do not like absolutes, but I have just have to say it--Newt, Hucky, and Palin can't win. As I've said many times, I like her a great deal, but she cannot win.

Since the government took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, taxpayers have spent more than $160 million defending the mortgage finance companies and their former top executives in civil lawsuits accusing them of fraud. The cost was a closely guarded secret until last week, when the companies and their regulator produced an accounting at the request of Congress.
The bulk of those expenditures — $132 million — went to defend Fannie Mae and its officials in various securities suits and government investigations into accounting irregularities that occurred years before the subprime lending crisis erupted. The legal payments show no sign of abating.

Hollowpoint, it's a shame you didn't post more of that article.
“There is no way to achieve these goals in the next few decades without a dramatic increase in domestic natural gas and a strong effort to modestly increase domestic oil production,” Palin said. “Keeping Alaska’s OCS [outer continental shelf] lease sales, exploration, and development programs on schedule, especially in the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea, is critically important to this effort.
“Stopping domestic energy production of preferred fuels does not solve the issues associated with global warming and threatened or endangered species, but it can make them worse,” she said.

Sarah Palin is a politician contemplating a run for the Republican nomination as President. She is 'in the arena' as a public figure and is exactly the sort of person it's okay to talk about around here. Meanwhile, my GF is a non-combatant, so to speak, and the most wonderful person I know in this world. I didn't ask Ace to turn my comment into a headline/post subject, and I frankly resent the "dirty whore" joke he made because you seem to have taken it as carte blanche to now constantly insult her virtue for no other reason than you dislike *my* view of Sarah Palin. But I think the RNC chair is a "staff" position, which is one of the reasons Steele was bad at it. He's supposed to implement the general party policies set by the influential men and women of the party, not tell everyone what the policies are. “It would not have been my style to put the cross hairs on there,” Pawlenty said Tuesday on “Good Morning America,” referring to a map like the one posted last year on SarahPAC’s website showing gunsights on the congressional districts represented by Giffords and a select group of lawmakers who supported health care reform.
“But then again, there’s no evidence to suggest that had anything to do with this mentally unstable person’s rage and senseless acts.”
He had 2 chances to knock that bullshit out of the park and he wavered, "it would not have been my style...", instead of "Cut the crap - her election map was standard campaign fare and it's disgusting and offensive that people are trying politicize the Tucson tragedy by linking her to it."
I am not impressed with him at all.

Hell.....If this country put Barack Obama in power with a Democratic Super Majority.....then anything is possible!
Palin is the Hillary Clinton counterpart. She may not win this time.....but she isn't going away!

You take that back-
Sarah immaculately conceived and then carried the Tea Party to term.
She's a Mother!
...and she was the Mayor. The Mayor. Of Wasilla!
That's before she served as the State of Alaska's greatest living Governorette.
She writes more intelligent things on her palm for one interview than you post in a week.

I can't see getting behind Daniels when Pawlenty is there. TPaw's got the CATO score, he's taller, better looking, and has hair. They're almost the same guy except that Daniels has p/o'd the SoCons with his truce.
I don't see any reason why Daniels shouldn't run simply because Pawlenty is in the race- they're not carbon copies of each other. I don't believe that his SoCon "truce" is a complete dealkiller for him.
TPaw has his faults too- as mentioned his prior support for federal action to combat "climate change" and for ethanol.
If they both run, I'd want to see how each performs on the campaign trail before choosing one over the other.

Good post Drew. I am as unsure of Pawlenty as I am of the all you can eat sushi place a few miles away.
Pawlenty seems to be reasonable however, there is something missing from Pawlenty that is becoming more and more evident. Pawlenty is unable to articulate a compelling message and connect with his audience. Dismal book sales and his lackluster appeal seem to make this all too strained for this former Midwestern governor.
And then this weird contrived video of Tarantino meets John Philip Souza is beyond creepy.

The point I'm making is that most people vote based on those sound bites. If they vote they decide like 2 days before and it is all based on sound bites or the breakdowns they read in their local paper. Very few Americans do the research, voting is all based on "the feeling you get from the candidate" these days.

"During his time in office, Governor Pawlenty issued 299 complete bill and line-item vetoes, including vetoing $7.5 billion in tax increases. In 2008, Pawlenty set a record for the most bill vetoes issued in one year by a Minnesota governor."
As to the "not confrontational enough" charge- know why every candidate in the general claims (credibly or not) that he's a "uniter not a divider", has experience "reaching across the isle" or "post-partisan"?
Because that's what the electorate in general wants to hear. If you can't play the "bi-partisan" card with some degree of plausibility, you'll lose.

Well...I think the momentum shift is actually going to work against us. Obama and the Democrats scared alot of people, but the problem now is the general population has been conditioned to be left-o-center, and now they aren't gonna want to give to much power to the Republicans for the exact reason we were complaining about it in early 2009.
So Republicans are gonna get big majorities in the House and Senate, and people are gonna leave the Executive the same, so that Republicans don't undue everything.
Obama is going to end up with every young voter again, every Black voter again, every female voter [with exception of the Palin Bots], and he is probably going to end up with the Latino vote....Not mention that the media is going to turn the propoganda machine up to "Eleventy 11"
It gonna be an uphill battle all the way!

I believe most of the GOP doesn't want her as a candidate because they believe she can't win, not necessarily because she's alienated them. And the media has played a big role in her apparent unelectability.

Um, if you weren't blinding yourself to the reality of the polls you'd wake up and realize that Palin does in fact alienate a LOT of people on the right. Most of the GOP doesn't want her as a candidate.
Not blinding myself at all. My point is the constant propaganda attack is working..to what degree??..who knows..but to deny it is silly
Further, he didn't say he could prove that. It wasn't a fucking poll. He didn't claim it was a study. It was a personal observation and speculation which you have taken as an invite to continue insulting them just because you're a rotten prick.

One thing that seriously worries me about nominating Romney is that his healthcare plan will allow team Obama reframe the debate in a way that allows them to basically say, "how can you say my plan is so wrong when you have a candidate that enacted the same basic ideas in his home state?" That could end the reread movement right then and there, unless Romney wins. Where it cones to Obamacare, Romney is the riskiest choice of all.

Right now Rasmussen has Romney in the lead with 24%, Palin 19%, and the huckster with 17%.
The survey of 1,000 Likely GOP Primary Voters was conducted on January 18, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. Likely GOP Primary Voters include both Republicans and unaffiliated voters likely to vote in a GOP Primary.
ThereÂ’s little difference of opinion now between male and female primary voters.
Palin leads among Tea Party members with 28% support. RomneyÂ’s the favorite among non-members with 32% of the vote.
Romney, Palin and Huckabee are essentially in a three-way tie among voters who describe themselves as very conservative. Those who characterize themselves as somewhat conservative and moderate/liberal have a clear preference for Romney.
Romney holds the lead among married and unmarried primary voters, but Palin is slightly ahead among those who have children living with them.
Palin and Huckabee are neck-and-neck among evangelical Christians. Other Protestants, Catholics and those of other religions like Romney better.
Huckabee has fallen pretty far since October. They were all close to being tied in Novemeber. Newt comes in at 11%.

But perhaps even more important than any single accomplishment was the sense of confidence and optimism President Reagan never failed to communicate to the American people. It was a spirit that transcended the most heated political arguments, and one that called each of us to believe that tomorrow will be better than today. At a time when our nation was going through an extremely difficult period, with economic hardship at home and very real threats beyond our borders, it was this positive outlook, this sense of pride, that the American people needed more than anything.

Well, Ace, there is the very true fact that she's sold by the media as much worse than she is. No candidate is perfect, but even if Palin were, she'd be sold as, oh, I don't know, a murdering psychotic who directs her acolytes to killKILLKILLKILL!, or what have you.
As they will do to whoever the frontrunner is until they get us back to their new McCain. Our candidate could be Santa Claus and we'd be hearing about him being guilty of breaking and entering.
Personally, I hope Palin's plan is not to run but to fuck with the media heads as a target to draw the fire away from whoever the candidate becomes, but they'll still have their shot at whoever isn't the liberallest Democrat.

Miss80's,
No I don't assume it is univeral across the board, I am just looking at the majority of the specific demographic.
Unfortunately, the majority of the population is consistantly voting Democrat now....or at least they want to vote Democrat.....once they see that the Republicans are going to get the huge majorties, the only stop gap will be to keep Obama. Behind the scences they have been setting this senerio up, where the mantra is......"The economic data suggest that a Republican controled House and Senate with a Democratic President is the best senerio for economic growth."

A dislike for the behavior of the Palinbots? I've made myself pretty clear on that.
Palin doesn't currently hold office, but does have a reality TV show and a daughter who appeared on yet another.
When her supporters (be they hardcore Palinbots or not) talk about her, it's rarely her actual political positions or record they want to talk about. Instead it's her personality they keep going on and on about (she's a brave and fearless warrior for giving talking points on Hannity!!!).
Her supporters talk about her as if she were little more than a celebrity, and Palin herself seems to encourage it to some degree.

If we take it as agiven the odds are against us in 2012 (I don't see why that would be, btw), then "risk" is relative. Ehy would Palin be riskier than Dole was in 1996? He was "safe," and an utter disaster. We can see Rudy, Pahlenty, and Romney would be in 2012. Rudy was a diaster last time around. Pahlenty is as exciting as cold gruel. Romney couldn't even beat the rolling disaster that was McCain, yet another "safe" candidate.

Though it would be hard to say that's 100% accurate considering the only post-Bush presidential election was in '08. That's also not considering the # of other factors and events that will and should change things between here and Nov. 2012, the 1st of those being the economy and the debt. If Obama can't make things better by then (which he won't be able to do), then I don't see how he's going to get reelected. People vote with their pocketbooks.

The other reasons? We don't think she can do the job. She has given no serious signs of qualifications. She was just barely qualified for VP in 2008 but apparently on November 3rd 2008 she suddenly became qualified for the presidency.
She has now had two years to grow and hasn't. She's still mostly known for what she was good at in September 2008, giving applause lines and fair-to-good cutting snark on the other party.
I love Sarah, but yeah I have to agree with this. Of course, the same could be said for Obama as well, but he had the entire MSM covering his ass for him. I think she's good at making the libs heads explode. They can't get enough of her.

I know, and David Gregory was relentless in pushing Eric Cantor RE "draconian cuts" yesterday. People will keep saying that they want less government and less of their money being spent in D.C., but they can easily be swayed by pictures of the homeless and starving babies. But we have enough pols on our side who know the issues and could potentially be persuasive about how the economy works that it might not be as big of an issue this time. So, it's an uphill battle for sure, but it's one we might win if we actually fight.

This is one of the things I don't like about the Palin fanboiz: when anyone says "she needs more experience" their inevitable reply is "But Obama....!!eleventy!"
They have built a warm, fuzzy halo around their candidate that, from outside, is a little short on facts. One good example is the "Alaskan Gas Pipeline." Yes, she "negotiated it, but go try to find even a construction site, much less a real pipeline.
To me, it is worrisome to have Palin fans building a myth around their Chosen One. That happened with the Mohammedan Mouthpiece, and we know how that's turning out....
Allen West, Mitch Daniels and others put themselves in the arena to display the courage of their convictions. Mutt Romney, Shuckabee, The Newt and, sadly, Palin, stand on the sidelines, telling us all how It Should Be Done without actually making any attempt to do anything.

Yeh, that was an awesome strategy in 2008. OK, unfair since the "Obama Isn't God, He's Better" took hold to a degree that nothing was going to work.
Nonetheless, you're forgetting that no matter who gets the GOP nod in 2012 is going to be ruthlessly savaged fairly and especially unfairly by the MFM. A bland candidate will be a pitiful punching bag, inoffensive to most but still a punching bag which means a loser by a landslide.
Not saying a charismatic but greatly flawed and widely disliked candidate will be the answer either, but when your opponent has been spotted 3 touchdowns, you don't do off tackle running plays.
PS - I'm not prepared to stipulate that the economy will have improved by 2012, there are too many systemic breakdowns to expect a normal postrecession recovery. Even during the Great Depression there were upswings that turned out to be false dawns, just like the "Green Shoots" of April 2009 and "Recovery Summer" of 2010

If Obama can't make things better by then (which he won't be able to do), then I don't see how he's going to get reelected. People vote with their pocketbooks.
Check the approval rating of GWB or Clinton at this point in their first term. Even with a massive deficit and a shitty economy with high unemployment, Obama has still managed to say around 50% aproval, give or take 5 points.
We're also looking at him holding a war chest as large as 1 billion dollars while the RNC is broke. Furthermore, the GOP House won't allow him to pass any more unpopular liberal bills like Obamacare or the Stimulus. He'll appear to become more "moderate" whether he wants to or not on that basis alone.
Many of you are vastly underestimating Obama's chances in 2012. No matter who we nominate, it's going to be an uphill battle.

Can we get past fighting the last campaign, please? 2008 was such an outlier, in almost every way I can think of, that it does absolutely no good to pick at the scab. McCain's decision to not directly confront Obama--ever, only compounded the underlying dynamics.
The MFM is not our friend. The person who wins the GOP will know this in 2012. This is why those who are engaging in an out-Obama-Obama strategy will not win the nomination. Direct. Honest. Policy-not platitude driven. Limited to three basic points. It wins.

The key is force the Dmocrats to take responsiblity for their actions over the past four years.....and teach the population that they have been had....that secures real power in the future where all this crap can be reversed, changed, fixed, and intelligently handled to secure an economic future for the country.

1. "Historic" is over when Osama Obama and the MFM say it's over;
2. I suspect millions of voters felt that if the Mohammedan Mouthpiece didn't win, the Cities Would Burn. They will feel those old 60s-liberal-race-guilt pangs again, either on instinct or because the Traitor-in-Chief's campaign pouts it out there (subtly, of course);
3. Miracle Worked undone and damaged by Repubs and Tea Partiers sounds perfectly plausible to the 52%. Just gotta give him four more years, and the unicorns will fly in formation over everyone.

A Europe.

Europe is having serious economic problems that may lead to the dissolution of their joint currency.
The US has a serious debt problem which may lead to hyperinflation of its currency.
Other major superpowers.
China: Has its own economic bubble which may collapse it.
Russia: Seems poised to use its control of energy as leverage over Europe; has shown expansionist traits.
Other concerns.
Nuclear weapons in the mideast.
That nutcase in charge of the NORKS.
1: Yes world stability is in serious peril. Historical examples of power voids caused by collapsing superpowers have all sorts of negative aspects, from famine, to war, to strife and tyranny.
2. No historical example leads us out of our current position to a prosperous secure one without serious work and sacrifice on our part.
I am not a Pawlenty fan, but epic crisis is where we are at, epic crisis is what woke up the American people; If we don't treat this crisis as the challenge of our time, we will not hand over a free United States to the next generation, whether our freedom is consumed by enemies from without, socialism, or crushing debt and poverty. With that sort of pressure, maybe epic is the right ad.

And no matter how much you want to believe that it won't be her pipeline once it's built, people will know that she was the one that finally got an agreement on it when nothing had been accomplished on it for 30 years before she did it. She was governor through the entire process right down to who was given the license for the project. The rest is up to Trans-Canada & Exxon Mobile.

The rest of us see a badly diminished, polarizing figure (and, alas, a polarizing figure on the wrong side of the 50/50 breakpoint) but you seem to still see the rockstar from the Republican National Convention.
I agree with that. I was really hoping that Palin would run for RNC chair. I think she would have been great, there. As much as I supported her for VP, I've been saying for a year that she would not be a viable candidate for President for many various reasons.

Pawlenty turned Palin thread, all the haters came out to give their learned opinion on why she won't be president. The defenders came to defend her. I just started reading it and haven't yet learned who the haters are for but I know who they are against.
I have a feeling though that when the haters say who they are for that that candiate isn't going to get much love from the defenders.

Mitch Daniels is clearly the smartest guy running - and it's not even close. He also has - far and away - the most conservative record of governance.
Unfortunately, his "truce on social issues" comments will probably be enough to convince the average voter that he's some kind of McCainish moderate.

1. Analyze DNC internal polling to find which candidate is the least likely threat to Obama. Make sure candidate is white, Protestant, preferably over 60, a long time insider, and stipulates Democrat "settled policies" and isn't known to be combatitive, and most of all wants to be liked by everyone
2. Praise said candidate as "a fresh voice of centrism" who is willing to listen, and is definitely "electable"
3. Do push-polls to show that the vast middle would definitely consider voting for Candidate Squish McBland, create the narrative that "I'm voting for McBland because he's the most likely to win in the general election
4. Once McBland wins, release the Hounds of Hell with unflattering photos, past indiscretions, policy flip-flops, scandal stories about a family member, and maybe even find a past girlfriend on Facebook to claim a torrid affair
5. Laugh as the GOP falls for it again, and try to make it interesting as you run out the clock

we do not want someone who is willing to attempt to persuade the squishy middle based on _policy_. because the squishy middle is full of idiots and pandering to them will lead to, well, idiotic policies.
we want someone who will appeal to the squishy middle based on image & aura. because, again, they're idiots, and they are willing to fall for that sort of thing. we want someone who makes the concepts of individual liberty and free markets "cool". one of Bush's good ideas was the phrase "ownership society" - and yeah it led to the housing bubble, but the _idea_ that we ought to own our own destiny instead of relying on some outside force to provide for us was a good idea.
so yeah I don't know who that is. if Mitch or T-Paw can pull it off then bully for them. but it ain't Mitt, Huck, Palin or Newt, that's for sure.

Yes, that will be the plan. It's got a fair chance of working, unless the GOP candidate has an ability to talk around the media, appeal strongly to the party base on terms that are still palatable to a good slice of independents, and defuse that attempt to move opinion to Huckabee. That's a tall order, but it's not totally impossible.
The real truth here is that it's the media that's the real enemy.

Here are the facts on the pipeline. It will never be built under Palin's plan. Ever. It was doomed for failure the minute it was proposed. You can't force the producers to pay for a pipeline they don't control, the fact of the matter is they're not going to pay for it unless they own it. That's the reality of it.

Also, when he stated he was not knowledgeable about economics. That was in July. I think that's what really tanked him. At that point, he had to pick an economics wiz as his VP, which he didn't. President Obama is likely to announce "major initiatives" on energy and
climate change in his State of the Union address, Sen. John Kerry

Kerry, the informal leader of the Senate effort to pass legislation to rein in global warming, encouraged the president to announce ambitious plans on energy and climate policy during Tuesday's speech, and said he expected Obama to do so.

The project has been licensed to Trans-Canada & Exxon Mobile.
TransCanada and ExxonMobil share a common goal--an Alaska natural gas pipeline that is constructed with the full support of the State of Alaska, the U.S. and Canadian governments, and the major North Slope producers.
Experts agree that all interested parties will eventually need to be aligned in one project in order to complete such an enormous and complex undertaking. We believe the Alaska Pipeline project and its alignment with the State of Alaska under the AGIA process offers the best path forward for success.
On July 30, 2010, the Alaska Pipeline Project closed its initial open season and received multiple bids from potential shippers. The next step is for the project to assess and negotiate the issues and conditions that are incorporated within the bids.

Fair enough, but I think part of the problem, at least with people here, is that ever candidate is terrible. Every single one has at least one flaw that disqualifies them. I don't see us getting a perfect candidate and I feel like no one here is really willing to compromise and its going to result in massive disappointment all around.
If I mention Romney, there isa section that hates him. Same with Palin, Gingrich, Giuliani, etc etc.
The only thing that I think I've seen everyone agree on is that Huckabee sucks. So in our primaries we should all just vote "not huckabee" and everything will take care of itself.

This country has so much "White Guilt," you think Obama is going to be allowed to fail? Not a chance in hell!
I kinda thought many white guilters would rationalize that they voted for him once, and were now free to go back to being racists and voting for somebody else.

I'm still catching up with the comments, but this is why we need a candidate who is not a white Christian male - because too many people are NOT over their guilt, and too many minorities will vote for ABW (anyone but whitey).

It's an impossible argument to make headway on. I've tried. But there are too many things people weigh subjectively and, frankly, often the rules change midway through the debate. I've come to accept that some people see Mayor of Wasilla as equal to - or superior to - United States Atty for the District of NJ. In addition, there's the assumption built-in that Christie (or any candidate) would have to resign to run - an assumption I reject.
Anyway, it's moot. Christie isn't running.
Palin will have to run on basically the same resume of public service that she ran as VP (unless she takes on a new role, obviously). For some of us, it's not enough.

I guess how I can see how it could be "funny", but it kinda makes me cringe.
It's kind of like watching Laverne and Shirley reruns with my little brother, when we were kids, on WGN. (To dark and cold to go out and play, besides dinner is almost on.)
I never could figure out which one I disliked more, Laverne or Shirley but I found it terribly uncomfortable watching them make such asses of themselves. I don't think I ever laughed but I did cringe a lot on their behalf.
Perhaps I was too young to have picked up on the laugh with us not at us vibe but I suspect that it was entirely lacking in that show.
If so I'm similarly failing to pick up on any sort of tongue in cheek vibe from this ad.
Still, it's fuckin' funny!

Don't kid yourself. Perry kinda sucks for border control. He's against the border fence. He's opportunistically glomming onto Voter ID and sanctuary cities because of Tea Party power but still against a physical barrier. His big advocacy is for "virtual fencing" which is to say none.

The producers (ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, and BP), TransCanada and some surprise as yet unnamed shippers all know that they must converge at some point. Parties involved expect to have an agreement hashed out by the end of 2011.
It isn't over and done with, as much as you would like it to be.

It bothers me that he went from not a factor to someone about whom I'll read a bunch of "regular joes" pushing in such a short time. Based on what? I don't usually wear a tinfoil hat, but I just gotta' believe those folks are being paid to do it. I see him as being a Perot type spoiler.
I guess at my core I'm a little distrustful of people who come from purely private sector backgrounds suddenly jumping into powerful political offices. As bad as politicians are, at least you have some chance to see how they'd react to having some regular Joe (see what I did there?) question them and take them to task for not doing their jobs. When was the last time Trump had to answer to a regular person? In that sense, Representatives really aren't bad people to pull from for higher office. At least they actually interact with their constituents. The good ones, anyway.
Posted by: Y-not at January 24, 2011 05:54 PM (pW2o8)
No they can't borrow the money, a project this large can only be done if BP, Exxon and Conaco do it together. Even BP and Conaco can't do it without Exxon.

No, it doesn't. You said it failed. You're pulling your arguments out of your ass. 6 months is nothing on a project like this.
The Alaska Pipeline Project will now begin assessing the details of the bids, including issues such as gas volumes, route preferences and the conditions attached to the bids by the shippers. Conditioned bids are typical in all major open seasons and unavoidable in a project this large and complex. The project will need time to evaluate the bids carefully and to negotiate solutions with the shippers. It is likely that some conditions can only be resolved between shippers and governments.

I don't know. Almost as long as I've been even nascently aware of the media, "personalities" like Donald Trump and Al Sharpton have been trotted out as "authorities" for what seems like my entire fucking life.
The older I got and the more I learned about the personal track records of the both of them the higher degree of contempt I hold for morons in Manhattan who keep licking their boots.
I've got no problem with either Al or Donald being the douchebags that they are.
I do have an increasing problem with the newsies and their bookers who seek out these morons' fucking opinions.

Christie -- not running, not that I care. He's great for NJ.
Barbour -- no one from the South who lived through the CRM is going to beat America's first black president.
Palin -- it would take some serious game during the primaries, but she has not aged well since 2008.
Romney -- his healthcare bill in MA was the prototype for the abomination we are currently trying to repeal, and even if he renounced it, no one would believe him. Plus McCain beat him.
Pawlenty -- no amount of slick packaging will make this stooge remotely interesting, not Sam's Club Conservatism, not Armageddon... Zzzzzz.

Romney is dead over Romneycare, and a whole host of other issues.
Palin can probably win the primary but I don't see that as being an easy win. The obvious being the establishment doesn't like her, but even many conservatives don't want her to be President, solid people who are right wing all the way or 90% of the way down. I'm one of those. I just don't think she has what it takes to be President. Whether its her misstatements and lack luster speaking ability. Her quitting half way through her term (People aren't going to care what the reason was). Her polarization of the electorate, she hasn't won over independents for over 2 years now how is that supposed to change?
Pawlenty is meh, nice guy, a few missteps, but nothing completely off putting. He's just meh.
Mitch Daniels, may run, may not run. The "social truce" didn't go over well but he could back down/over come that. Not exactly exciting, but a pretty dang good record.
Gingrich & Giuliani, out of office for a long time, lots of personal issues & very moderate on some (key to some) issues (Or even liberal on them). It ain't happening. Although Gingrich would be an alright Prez imo his affair makes him DoA.
Anyhow my thoughts. Granted I'm young 20-something, but I live for electoral politics so just my 2 cents.

I think that Palin would be a losing candidate in a general election, not a terrible one.
I don't want her to win the nomination and so I shan't vote for her in my primary!
That's why I hope that she does not throw her hat in, this primary round.
I hope that she sits this one out, personally, and waits to weigh in, when it really counts
In the general.
Sarah Palin is not going to be President in 2012!
2016, 2020?
Could be....
If you think that I am just being "ignorant" or "jealous" of Sarah's virtues, then I invite you to show me a compelling case for just which votes in the electoral college you think she has in the bag, and why.
State by state.
Which ones will be tough to get?
Which ones are "un-gettable"?
Not Sarah the person, Governor Palin the politician, the candidate.

Put a spotlight on people like Pawlenty, Demint, Huckabee or Palin and, true to form, they'll always perform like a trained seal, preening, barking, balancing a ball on their nose and clapping for themselves ......., while, behind the scenes and without any notoriety or fanfare, conscientious and seasoned professionals like Alabama's conservative Senator Jeff Sessions continue to diligently look out for the best interests of their constituents without seeking any recognition, but going to sleep every night with clear consciences, knowing that, head-on, they have met and fulfilled their responsibilities to the American people without any smoke, mirrors or bullshit. Too bad that the trained seals strutting, barking and clapping for themselves give magnificent politicians a bad name.

Rubio, Jindal, Christie. Haley, Pence, maybe Paul Ryan, maybe even Noem or Thune, and so many currently unknowns.
There are so many good GOP possibilities for 2016 in my mind.
This next elections is going to be really tough. Finding the candidate, rallying behind the candidate, and taking on one of the best presidential campaign organizations.
Obama has a solid advantage going into 2012, most certainly not unbeatable, but we will have to put up a great effort in order to win it. Its going to take money, charisma, & real ideas (along with more luck than we want to admit) to beat him. I hope & pray we succeed. Barring that I think we could take back Congress in 2012. The Dems have very dismal Senate prospects & a lot of seats in danger vs the GOP. There is no way the House GOP reverse back the 60 some odd seats needed for the Dems to hold the House in 2012. So we have the House, maybe (hopefully) the Senate, but the WH is iffy right now.

I hope you find your way again, Ace. And it's not aiding and abetting the media and the Left (with their Soros-funded blog trolls) trashing and dismantling the few Republicans willing to stand and fight the Socialist incursion.
The Obama team and their minions on the Left have been very effective at creating lying meme after lying meme to attack the Republican leaders not afraid to stand up to them and then having the Republican Establishment jump on the lying memes and run with them ... not because they (the Republican Establishment) want to win ... but because they only want to win with THEIR CHOSEN candidate ... someone they are comfortable with and they know won't disrupt their positions of power, influence, and wealth creation. Access has its advantages ... monetarily.
Keep your eye on the prize ... the 2012 elections. You can either be a leader in keeping the focus on the Dem's attempts to socialize the country or you can play the Left and Republican Establishment's political game of personal and political destruction. But realize, the Left always uses someone for a test subject to see what works before they move on the eventual target ... the 2010 Republican Nominee for President. They are testing the waters to see how far they can go and with which attacks. Each media victory by the Left in pushing a false narrative ... no matter how outrageous .. will only embolden and encourage the Left to go even further.

#802: It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that there are sleazy and racist Democrats like Vic and Tobey and a few others (and their sock puppets) who come here daily to sow dissension among gullible Republicans by viciously attacking conscientious Republican politicians and by viciously trying to discredit informed, knowledgeable and conscientious Republicans here by accusing them of being trolls, when, in fact, it is the Vics and the Tobeys who are the sleazy, sneaky and cowardly, Democrat trolls and the real troublemakers here. You can always spot them, because, in their ignorance, they hate anyone here who is educated and properly informed on the issues, showing their inferiority and that they are losers and fools, too, whenever they express their resentment, envy and jealousy of graduates of Ivey League universities, presumably just because they were too lazy and too dumb to make the effort that it takes to get into a top ranked university.
Well, its either that, or they are depraved, paranoid schizophrenics, whose mental and emotional instability are, I suspect, hereditary and genetic with at least two of them, one indication of which is that they don't realize that their sock puppets are as loony and as ignorant as they are.
