You'd Best Strap Yourself In. DOOM! Is Behind the Wheel.

DOOOOM

Jobless claims out - 400K. Down 1,000. Whoopee!! Recovery Summerpalooza!!

The left's working overtime to make us just like Europe. No thanks fellas, Italy's busily proving the old adage that PI(I)GS get fed and hogs get slaughtered.

Never ones to fear stating the obvious, JPMorgan shaved a point off its GDP growth estimate for the third quarter. Who could've seen that one coming?

Also on the GDP front, coblogger emeritus and all-around good guy Geoff has new a new post and DOOM!y chart over at Michael's obscure little website.

Read the whole post, but his main point is that assuming future GDP growth around 4%-5% is wildly optimistic given the history of the last few decades. I agree and would add that since GDP includes deficit spending by the government, the numbers are inflated as a measure of our ability to support the gargantuan government debt we have. In other words, we're boned.

The AP makes the case for more stimulus. Well, they don't make much of a case, they just lay out a laundry list of all our ills and lament that the government doesn't have any bullets left. Dear AP: see above.

Chartology: Head and Shoulders makes a reappearance. It could signal a huge market crash. Or not. (Dow futures indicate opening down about 100 points as I write this, btw)

There's a lot of DOOM! out there, people. Stay safe.

Update 1: Et tu Krugman? Notice how former Enron adviser Paul Krugman wraps in his continuing assertion that if only the spendulus had been bigger, everything would be a-ok.

Update 2: As of 11:00am, the Dow's off about 260 points and about 1,100 points lower than the July 21st close. Happy 57th birthday, Mr. President. For you Mark Steyn fans, here's a long and quite DOOM!y interview with Ezra Levant, or, as they're known by various Canadian human rights commissions, the co-defendants.

And for Laura, a kitteh:

Find a quarterly chart of GDP during the 30s and all will become clear.

Also, I can't help but notice that a whopping 5 years of the last 60 had GDP growth of 7% or better to balance the CBO baseline assumption (whenever that started).

17 Want more Doom!?
US debt shot up $238 billion to reach 100 percent of gross domestic project after the government's debt ceiling was lifted, Treasury figures showed Wednesday.
Treasury borrowing jumped Tuesday, the data showed, immediately after President Barack Obama signed into law an increase in the debt ceiling as the country's spending commitments reached a breaking point and it threatened to default on its debt.
The new borrowing took total public debt to $14.58 trillion, over end-2010 GDP of $14.53 trillion, and putting it in a league with highly indebted countries like Italy and Belgium. At the end of the story, there's this little nugget:
Moody's said Tuesday that the government needed to stabilize the ratio at 73 percent by 2015 "to ensure that the long-run fiscal trajectory remains compatible with a AAA rating.

Hmmmm.... to get to a debt to GDP ratio of 73% by 2015 we'd have to borrow $0 (balance the budget, in other words) and grow the economy by 27% in 4 years.   I did the math:  with compounding you'd have to have annualized growth of 6.2% in 2012-2015, i.e., with Obamacare and the expiration of the Bush tax cuts kicking in.   As today's Doom! post notes, we're much more likely -- if we're lucky -- to get 2-3% growth.

In short, we're screwed.

30 The DOOM collapse has started folks. The first money printing issue after the debt ceiling raise uses up almost all of it catching up to the lies that they already did since May.

Almost all of the borrowing being done is the Gov selling T-Bills to the Fed. As I said in the previous thread, look for gold to top $2000 before the end of the month and when the next "borrowing" occurs another huge increase.

The fact that we are at 100% of GDP is just another indicator, but watch gold and other commodities for real inflation.

34 Yesterday, both China and Russia came out and said some pretty bad things about this country, the essence of which was that this country is living beyond its means.  This wasn't widely reported, but where it was, those comments were ridiculed.  Imo, they shouldn't have been other than perhaps to say that this country isn't living beyond its means - this government is.

Russia and China were telling the truth and regardless of how we want to receive it, other countries will listen to them and do their own due diligence and come to the same conclusion.

The fact is, this country is in decline.  What little respect we have left is given begrudgingly because a lot of the world can't imagine what the world will be like without a strong force for good to counteract all of the growing forces for evil.

Our being boned more than likely means that much of the rest of the world will be boned first - and worse.

Like Barry is so fond of saying, "People will die..."

I'll take these signs. We already had one of his buddies from Vegas talking like McConnell (we can't get anything done while he's President) and now the late night circuit? We have a new version of reality with which to deal. Almost all of the initial numbers have revised later, and almost all of those were in a negative direction. Therefore, the inital reports are significant when and only when they telegraph bad news. because if the initial ones are bad, then the background information HAS to be far worse.

The one useful thing this new reality has to to indicate, like the mark of the Beast (let's call them the Wildebeest) those who are either in the tank or are useful idiots. Those who appear to take these initial reports at face value are no different from those who discussed gaily what they would do after the Titanic's band ceased to play.

How about a website that lets you select your own cow, and to push a button on your keyboard to turn on the saw that will slice of its head as you watch the action on your monitor?

86 Here in SWPA we've got a ton of farmers and people will often get together and buy an entire cow.

We have lots-o-farmers near here but beef cattle is not big in SC. What few people have cattle, they are dairy cattle. Most of the farmers here are into corn, cotton, soybeans, and hogs.  Maybe some with tobacco on the side.

Now I can get all the fresh slaughtered hog I want. Used to do that for all night BBQ.

This is arguably illegal in Massachusetts.  They passed laws that made "Internet hunting" illegal.  I believe the law prohibits killing animals over the internet.

We will have collapsed long before that. Look for gold going through the roof first (more than now). The groceries and gas going out the top. (more than now)

The look for people doing barter trading instead of money. When it hits the barter economy the collapse is imminent because the parasites will have no support under a barter economy.

The collapse will  occur in the large cities first when the food stores can no longer operate because the federal government can not pay the parasites large enough bills to buy a chicken.

Note how AP sets up their position.  The economy is in the crapper because...

1.  "Shoppers won't shop".  OK, no one will argue that shoppers refusing to shop keeps the economy depressed.

2.  "Companies won't hire".  OK, no one will argue that the continuing unemployment problem, fueled by companies not hiring, keeps the economy depressed.

3.  "The government won't spend on economic stimulus - it's cutting instead".  OK, no one will argue that...uh...wait a sec!  Actually, based on the fact that the last "economic stimulus" didn't do a friggin' thing it advertised, I think I can safely say that most people will question the wisdom of government stimulus.

Then, notice how the second paragraph opens: "Without much to invigorate growth..."  The clear implication here is that 1-3 above were all things that would "invigorate growth" if their reverses were true.  In other words, we'd see "invigorated growth" if shoppers did shop, if companies would hire, and if the government would spend on economic stimulus.  That's the AP's position, presented as three equally contributing factors to our current economic condition.  But that's like saying that a passenger plane crashed because the plane ran out of fuel mid-air, the flight crew all passed out, and the plane's bathroom was out of toilet paper, when the latter had jack squat to do with the crash.

216 @223: Besides, in the immediate present, every dollar of government "stimulus" is a dollar less of investment capital available to business to TRULY "grow the economy."

The liberal model of a Keynsian stimulus amounts to this: you pay your neighbor $10 to wash your laundry, and he'll pay you $10 to wash HIS.  Ouila!  In the sophomoric mind of a liberal, you just "grew" the economy $20!  The idea that the both of you should save your money up to purchase a washing machine doesn't occur to these progressively more idiotic nimrods.

Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious. Law enforcement officers from the Virginia Tech Police Department, Blacksburg Police Department, Christiansburg Police Department, Virginia State Police, and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are patrolling the campus, continuing to look for the subject.

You know, it occurs to me that AoSHQ has NEVER had a no-holds barred, free-for-all grown up discussion of the relative merits of shaving vajajays.

That really should be addressed.

three juveniles attending a camp at the university reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holding what may have been a handgun. They say the weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort. Posted by: Tami

Given the Breivik camp of horrors, give these juveniles a lie detector test, and fine their parents if deception played out. Leave a "permanent" mark on their temporary juvenile record.

Coincidentally, the Air Force dropped its voluntary course regarding moral warfare that quoted Biblical scripture after one complaint. And our entire Military is ordered to publicly observe Ramadan regardless of the majority complaint.
