Blog wars are profitless (though they seem to drive traffic momentarily, they suppress it in the long run AFAICT), but inevitable. There is something about a conflict like this that just *demands* that people clear out of common ground like it was radioactive.

Dennis the Peasant, one of the most ascerbic "small bloggers" out there, always thought that Ms. Geller, whom he was wont to call "Pammy -cakes", was one of the more stupid bloggers on the Right.

He also routinely riduculed Marc Ambinder, Amanda Marcotte, Matty Yglesias as being hit hard with the stupid stick.

Dennis is an old, fat unlovely man, who is kind of a proto-libertarian conservative, in that he made fun and criticized everyone who he thought was trying to harsh his mellow (and he really wasn't mellow) and freedom.  He did appreciate good writing when he saw it, ridiculed bad thinking when he saw it (a lot), which included Pammy-cakes.  I could never understand the attraction to her blog.

Sadly, Dennis has retired from blogging, but his site is still up, and some of the archived posts are pretty obnoxious and funny.

I was always attracted to the cute girls with glasses, and never to the real stunners.  Sure, part of it was that I didn't have a chance with them, but part was that I usually didn't like them.  Being drop-dead gorgeous seems to warp a person.  They don't necessarily start out bad, but if a person doesn't have to try to be likeable, why bother, and most of them don't.  Being beautiful really can be a disadvantage in some ways.

I always try to be cordial, but not too personal, IYKWIM.

However, I'd never have guessed from your excellent writing that you were basically an introvert, Ace. And about your panic problem, I've been there, too, as a result of enduring a lot of physical abuse during childhood, which, thankfully I've just about outgrown. My observation is that when you are one on one with someone who is really super extroverted, they sometimes become uncomfortable when someone does much more listening than talking, as opposed to trying to talk over them, finish sentences, wait for them to finish so you can jump in, etc.

But as the strange attempt to shut down all skepticism about Rick Perry continues, and people keep sending Ace's post to me, and pointing out that it is being picked up all over, so here goes. And Pamela Geller smacks down Ace here. "So.... Yeah... The New Smear Is That Rick Perry Is a Dhimmi, Huh?," from Ace of Spades, August 26 (thanks to all who sent this in): Pam Gellar [sic], relying on a hot tip from, um, Salon, thinks Rick Perry's a dhimmi. Salon did report on Perry's connection to the Aga Khan. But the Perry bots keep breathlessly repeating that "Geller relied on Salon!" as if Salon's hard-Left pseudo-journalist Justin Elliott were the only source for the connection between Perry and the Aga Khan. Unfortunately, that is not the case; if it were, the Perry/Aga Khan ties could easily be dismissed as Leftist propaganda. But they can't, and Ace and the others who try to dismiss or downplay the Perry/Aga Khan ties by saying that Geller got it from Salon know they can't -- there are too many other sources besides Salon. So why do they keep bringing up Salon? To manipulate you into thinking that Leftist propaganda is all there is to this. In playing that kind of shell game, they're no better than the Center for American Progress. Ace is mightily enthused about David Stein's purported refutation of the problems that Pamela Geller and I have raised about Perry, and to which I responded in part here. Ace calls it "the greatest rejoinder in the history of blogdom." It is, in fact, considerably less than that; if Ace had done anything more than take it at face value and accept its claims uncritically, he would have discovered that quickly. Ace claims that Stein has shown that "the 'dhimmi' curriculum that was actually produced by Texas teachers consulting with Aga Khan is...going to hurt Perry, because this is so biased against Muslims it will reinforce perceptions he is some kind of rootin'-tootin' six-gun shooting cowboy yahoo." One very odd thing about the Aga Khan/Perry curriculum: since this whole brouhaha started, it has been taken offline. It is now available only in cached form here. Why was it taken down? Was the Perry camp embarrassed by the material that Pamela Geller published here, showing it to be a whitewash of Islamic teaching and history? Or was it taken down because it really is, as Ace says, so "biased against Muslims it will reinforce perceptions [Perry] is some kind of rootin'-tootin' six-gun shooting cowboy yahoo"? Is either option favorable to Perry? If it was taken down because it's a dhimmi whitewash, Perry is tacitly admitting that our criticisms of him were right, and those evaluating Perry should be concerned about his naivete in dealing with the Aga Khan. If it was taken down because it was too honest about Islam and will thus hurt Perry with the dhimmi/Norquist faction of the GOP, Perry is again tacitly admitting that our criticisms of him were right: he is not able or willing to stand up to Norquist and his Islamic supremacist allies. So which is it? What are they hiding? And does it matter? Either way, the deep-sixing of the curriculum proves that we were right about Perry all along. Ace gets his information from David Stein here. And indeed, the material that Stein presents, and Ace republishes, seems to be great. It speaks honestly about Islamic conquests: "From its early days, Islam reacted aggressively toward its civilized neighbors the Byzantines and the West." It notes that "while Westerners studied Islamic culture, Muslims showed almost no interest in Western culture, remaining ignorant of modernity and its impact." It even seems to expose Islamic hatred of Israel: "The conflict continues because the West, and the United States specifically, support Israel (an outpost of Western Civilization surrounded by Islamic Civilization), which Muslims generally dislike or hate. Islamic enmity toward Israel is complicated, but hatred of Jews and Israel can be traced at least to the success of Nazi anti-Jewish propaganda starting in 1933." But Ace is wildly overstating his case when he says, in his typical half-witted beer swiller's lingo, "Are you shitting me? Gellar's attacking this? This reads like her fucking blog for fuck's sake. In Texas, they're fucking reading 'Atlas Shrugs' to the kids, and Geller's complaining. Maybe it's because she thinks she's owed royalties." Ace clearly doesn't know the first, foggiest thing about Islam; after all, it's not the name of a porn mag or a brand of beer. If he did, he would recognize that the claim that "Islamic enmity toward Israel is complicated, but hatred of Jews and Israel can be traced at least to the success of Nazi anti-Jewish propaganda starting in 1933" is itself a whitewash. Islamic antisemitism didn't begin in 1933 or come from the Nazis; it's as old as Islam itself, going back to the Qur'an's designation of the Jews as the worst enemies of the Muslims (5:82) and Muhammad's exiles and massacres of the Jews of Arabia. See a full discussion of this question here. Why does this matter? It's misleading. If you think that Islamic antisemitism is something they picked up from the Nazis after centuries of Islamic tolerance (more on that later), one will tend to think that it is something that is carried lightly among the opponents of Israel, and can be reasoned or negotiated away. This will lead one to support political solutions for the Israeli/Palestinian conflict like land-for-peace that not only cannot and will not work, but weaken Israel. Ace doesn't know anything about Pamela Geller, either, or he would know that she has written about the Qur'anic roots of Islamic antisemitism, and so would recognize that bit about the Nazis making the Muslims antisemitic as a whitewash, also. This supposedly tough part of the Perry/Aga Khan curriculum, which you can find in full at this cached link here, is actually not at all the Islamorealistic presentation that Ace and Stein claim it to be. It does contain the material that they quote, but note that in all that, and in all the rest of it, there is absolutely nothing about the Qur'an's or Muhammad's exhortations to violence. Again, why does that matter? Because if you don't identify the root of the problem correctly, you will continually apply the wrong remedies. The idea that Islam is a Religion of Peace that has been hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists has led the U.S. to all sorts of policy errors, foreign and domestic: pouring billions in Pakistan, supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, treating stateside Islamic supremacist groups with ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood as neutral civil rights organizations, etc. If the exhortations to violence and subjugation of unbelievers under Sharia that are contained in Islamic texts and teachings were acknowledged in the public sphere, Muslim groups in the U.S. could be challenged to show what they're doing to teach against such things, and investigated for sedition where appropriate. Instead, law enforcement and government officials constantly trust individuals and groups that are untrustworthy, because they don't understand the smooth ways in which they're being deceived.

Like many of you, I did a ton of reading of different websites after 9/11 related to Islam and the war on terror. He'd get us into bar fights with impossible odds, maybe because he liked the rush that comes with desperation. Who knows? But I liked him anyway. So yeah, now Pam is attacking solid conservatives like Perry because he believes in establishing a rapport with moderate Muslims. Her complaint against Perry is idiocy, of course. If anyone is going to discredit Islamic extremism, particularly those aspects showing themselves within the United States, it would be the ones of that faith who speak out against that extremism. She doesn't get it. Truth is, she'll never get it.

Spencer's defense of Geller's statements was weak and IMO Stein took him down without much effort.  I get that Spencer's a personal friend of hers and wants to defend her, but I have a lot more respect for him than I do for her and its disappointing to see him engaging in CJ-esque innuendos and guilt by association.  I expect this from Pam Geller and rarely read her stuff as a result.  She's always struck me as a Marat-wanna-be.  She's far too eager to find traitors to the cause.  Stein's spot on when he says that she's a liability to her own cause and those like Spencer who defend her.

A presidential candidate can't afford to take Spencer's approach (essentially that Islam itself needs radical reform) without the media making them sound like a wingnut.  I've taken the time to read Spencer's books and I generally agree with him, but a ten second sound-bite doesn't give a candidate like Perry the time to lay out even 1% of the necessary context to justify that position.  Ask Herman Cain how well his superficially anti-Muslim comments have played out for his campaign.

I'm currently struggling with the same thing, and I found myself nodding the whole time reading your description of just how shitty this feels. My 'anxiety' led to an ER trip before I talked to anyone about it. The doc put me on Metoprolol (blood pressure / anxiety) and Zoloft (which I hate), but I've weened myself off both. I think just knowing it was 'anxiety' and not a full on myocardial infarction helped a little.

I always considered myself an introvert, and when I tell this to people I know they laugh at me.  Social situations are unbearable for me for one simple reason: I can't walk up to someone and introduce myself and start a conversation.  It's almost impossible.  So, unless someone talks to me first, I'm lost.  Now, once I meet someone (somehow), then I'm on cruise control, I never shut up, and life is fine.  I wish it wasn't like this, I can only imagine the number of great people (women) I ended up not meeting because I was too afraid to break the ice.  Even alcohol doesn't help.

Ace, I hear you about being an introvert. I have Avoidant Personality Disorder, which pretty much is an extreme form of introversion. (I also have a huge anxiety about noise, but that's less relevant). Your instincts about treatment are correct -- the only way to combat introversion and social anxiety are simple exposure to people, while at the same time making sure that you have a way to escape when it gets to be too much for you. The more social you are, the easier it is to be social, no matter how painful it is at first. You're never going to be a social butterfly but you don't have to be a shut-in either. Life is a balance.

As to Pam Geller...she does good work on various aspects of islamism and has some guts. I also like that she pisses Chaz Johnson off. But the overreaction gets old pretty quickly. I like the cool ewok irony much better, which is why I was happy to find the HQ soon after abandoning LGF.

Non-Introvert, here. But now I know why so few of you Morons & Moronettes have ever mentioned being in a band or doing any performance-related stuff.

I'm also total-geek when it comes to computers, which probably explains why I get along with introverts.  I don't know very many computer-geek extrovert rock-band musicians, because we're not that common.  Think Thomas Dolby for one, maybe those Propellerheads guys for another.  At least that's music.

Me, I play classic rock, and have no problem being up there with punkers, country dudes, Buddy Guy type Bluesmen, New Orleans and Zydeco bon temps rollers, bluegrass pickers, and Lynrd Skynrd types.  Even polka (if there's beer). I dig it all, and I'll sing anything.

Now that I think on it, this also explains why I'm always the one who has to debug people's sound reinforcement problems.  It's a lot like computer stuff, and hard rock types who do computers are hard to find. I thought there'd be more PA-geeks in the world of rock.  There really aren't.

I'll be retiring from that life, though.  Now I'll be doing executive-producer type stuff for Jazz-boy and other people. Nothing major. Yet.  Still doing the geek thing, so this is one of my haunts.

That sounds bizarre, but after a show, when I'm doing the meet-and-greet with the patrons, I somehow gain that ability for small talk that I never had before. I think it's because, at that point, I'm *still* acting, but they don't know it. It's like my own secret improv. They think they're talking to Laura, the person, but they're really talking to whichever character I just played in front of them. I get my psychological defense, and everybody's happy. As soon as the last patron is out the door, the mask comes off and I'm me again. 666 A very revealing post.  I didn't know you were an introvert.  Your blog personality is totally different from the way you are in real life apparently  I think a lot of us introverts are like that.  I have a very confident and perhaps even a bit argumentative online personality but I am just as you describe in person - very quiet and non-confrontational.  I think Steve Sailer said he is the same way. 

I have to agree about Geller.   At first, I found her willingness to stand up against political correctness very refreshing, but it soon became apparent that she has no powers of discrimination.  It is all black and white with her.  I get into quite a few discussions on Irshad Manjii's Facebook page and the Geller types stuck out like a sore thumb.  They lumped Manjii in with the Jihadists just because she is a Muslim, not seeming to notice that she is a huge critic of the Jihadist strain in Islam.  Very tiresome to listen to someone like that and ultimately pointless.

Ace, you are a great guy, I can just tell. Introverts are usually the funny guys who make me laugh. I am an extrovert and I married an introvert. He was one of the few guys I'd met who "talked" to me instead of, well, what you normally do with us supermodels. Seriously, he was a friend first and now a husband of 32 years, and remains my best friend.

I do not read the other blog much. Way too much emotional hype radical stuff. I prefer the company of morons. I do think she is a bit high strung, insecure, and manic to do what she did to you at that party. I would have defended you if I were there. If we did have one, John McCain would almost certainly have been disqualified and we would have had an actual Republican candidate to run against The Mansourian Candidate.

673 I have both blogs on my google page. I "promote" or "demote" blogs as they "earn their keep" by posting good stuff. AoSHQ, Gateway and the Corner are at the top and have been for years - Geller's blog is near the bottom and I've considered dropping it further. I've never "promoted" it, and I never visit or comment. Whereas this blog - I refresh to see if Ace or Jim Hoft have posted anything new.

Do RSS feeds to a google page = hits? If so I am dropping her blog. Enough is enough.
