2012 Winter Classic: NY Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers
— DrewM

wclogo.jpg

As has become tradition here at the leading conservative hockey blog, we present the Winter Classic (3 eastern on NBC). This year's outdoor game is a typical good vs. evil match up held in the home of evil...Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia.

The two big hockey stories so far are the Flyers are starting their back-up goalie instead of the guy in the first year of a 9 year, $51 million deal. That'll end well.

For the Rangers the news is much better, they get their All-Star Defensemen Marc Staal back for his first game of the season after suffering a concussion last season.

Weather looks great and these two teams are 1 and 2 in the Eastern Conference*. Should be a great game.

If you're neutral, check out this story about Rangers Mike Rupp (number 71 on your score card). Pretty cool, right?

*Technically they aren't 1-2 in the conference but the winner of this game will be in 1st place (the Rangers are now).

Almost forgot...hockey teams don't really have cheerleaders but some teams have skating chicks who clean the ice up during the game.

I went with an Islanders girl because this is as close as they will ever get to The Winter Classic.

For the ladies.

He's interviewing Santorum and asked him about his remark that homosexuality in some way harms our society (paraphrasing) and then asked him when he thought he would wake up and realize that everyone is "okay". Further he continued to argue that people "don't wake up gay".

Wanna bet they edit the replay of that bit?

39 The Winter Classic is the best thing the NHL has done in my adult life. I'm not a big hockey fan. Or a natural hockey fan. I grew up mostly in warm states. I've never played a game of competitive hockey in my life. Only been ice skating a half dozen time. Only time I've ever even shot a puck at a net was when visiting my Ohio cousin who had a little pond with a net in his backyard he used for shooting practice.

Yet I look forward to the Winter Classic each year. It's exciting. It's different and fun. It's probably my 2nd favorite regular season gimmick event of any league. Thanksgiving day NFL being #1. It's just a fairly meaningless regular season game, but it's interesting. And I know the excitement of the even means the players will be amped to put on a good show.

Remember a few years back, (maybe 10?) when Krispy Kreme's stock was all the rage?

Their stores were doing great. And then they made the Big Mistake®.

Krispy Kreme decided to expand...everywhere...and rapidly.

They had the hype on their side and their product was good. But there was no sustainable market for Krispy Kreme's goodness in the Northeast. One store near me had its grand opening with long lines. A few months later the place was a ghosttown (tumbleweed blows by).

Less than a year after it opened it closed its doors. A local fish & chips/roast beef joint moved in (Kelly's).

The Flyers have a little more aggressive offensive style based on their upper end talent.

The Rangers have upper end talent but they generate their offense more from hard work/grinding style than skating and passing like the Flyers do.

The Rangers Defense is a lot better (Flyers have injury problems on the blue line).

In goal...the Rangers' goalie is all world.

Absolutely.  Love watching it.  Brings back memories of outdoor hockey as a kid, or street hockey when the weather was too warm.

Extra nice this year with the Flyers playing in it at home, especially against the despised Rangers.  Citizens Bank Park looks great gussied up for a hockey game, too.  Not used to seeing orange and black in the stands, but it's good to see.

77 They had the hype on their side and their product was good. But there was no sustainable market for Krispy Kreme's goodness in the Northeast. One store near me had its grand opening with long lines. A few months later the place was a ghosttown (tumbleweed blows by).

Krispy Kreme was victim of one of the worst management teams in history.

To begin, when a long time fan, a businessman from Reno, Nevada, asked to open the first franchise outside the south, the management told him no "It's a Southern thing." When he persisted and they relented, he had to fight tooth and nail to get them to agree to necessary upgrades to the stores. When he opened the doors there were folks lined up more than a mile down the street: They had driven from Utah, Arizona, and California for the opening. SO, KK said HEY! let's run with it, and then took off on a massive expansion effort.

However, they refused, and still refuse, to expand their offerings and their coffee is some of the worst fast food coffee available.

At the same time, DD expanded their menus to include breakfast sandwiches and, in many locations, sold Baskin-Robbins as well. They also moved to the front of the pack as the indisputable leader of best fast food coffee. They did so well that they forced McDonald's to change their strategy by launching a huge campaign to promote their new coffee and the improved service wherein they would actually add the cream and sugar to your coffee for you.

KK offers donuts. Period. Albeit, the absolutely best donuts on the planet but, no muffins, no croissants, no sandwiches, and still shitty coffee.

One of the very few traditions held in my family had been to drive around and see the Christmas lights and then go to KK for hot cocoa and to watch the donuts being made. The store had been in the same location for decades and was an icon replete with a massive neon 'K' out front. They closed it three years ago and in a city that comprises nearly 900 square miles, there are now two locations. I live in the dead center of town and must drive a minimum of 13 miles to the nearest which is more than 30 miles from the customers who once visited the old location.

Fucking idiots.

The NHL is a garbage league. I'd rather watch rugby.

The ice cheerleader is hot.

92 Hockey business question. Why do the Islanders do so poorly attendance wise? Isn't Long Island perfect hockey demographics -- lots of white people in a northeastern city with good incomes. Do the Rangers suck up all the fan interest? Or are the Long Island incomes so high the locals lose interest in sports.

I understand why the NHL teams in the South have struggled. Puzzled by the Islanders, though.

They've been a bad team for a long time.

Also...their arena is about 1,000 years old and not in the "cool, historical" way.

94 92

1. Their team is awful

2.  Their management is awful

3.  Their arena is awful

95 The Rangers really haven't been able to get their forecheck going.

Posted by: DrewM. at January 02, 2012 12:33 PM (ehlWj)

96 92 Lot's of reasons A) The Islanders were one of the 1st teams in all sports to go all cable back when most people in the area didn't have cable yet B) When they were good they priced a lot of people out of going...thus alienating the young fans who would now be their fanbase C) crappy marketing D) alienating alumni from their early 80's dynasty E) poor ownership F) poor general managers - drafting issues & then trading the few young studs they did find for garbage G) failure to replace an antiquated arena with the worse lease agreements in all pro sports etc etc etc LETS GO RANGERS!!

Kinda like the Hartford Civic Center was when the Whalers were here.  Actually, still is.

99 I never knew about the Ice Girls.  I can't afford to go to an NHL game- the ticket prices are insane, and they never show them on TV since they do their thing during commercials.  What they really need is a retractable stripper pole that pops out of the ice.

104 The Roots are such left-wing scum. They are just open Marxists. Literally. They aren't just kinda left-wing-ish.

There really should be a career penalty to openly supporting the most murderous ideology in human history.

Nobody who openly calls for Fascism is invited to play at any sports biggest games.

105 Illini win, Northwestern loses, TheOSU loses, Penn State loses...if Michigan loses, this'll turn out to be a good start to 2012.

I thought it was an odd choice for a hockey crowd.

115 The Santa that we booed was like Dan Akryod's Santa in Trading Places...disheveled and drunk. And it happened about 45 years ago. But that doesn't sound as good.

Look, we have asshole sports fans. Maybe more than our fair share. But don't pretend that we're the only ones.
