— Ace It's very odd timing that this story shows up now-- and I don't mean to suggest a conspiracy theory, or suggest it's a false story, or anything like that.
It's just that the timing is in fact odd. (It's strange that no one can say anything without a series of jam-packed implications automatically flowing from it any more.)
BEIJING (Reuters) - A knife-wielding man slashed 22 children and an adult at an elementary school in central China on Friday, state media reported, the latest in a series of attacks on schoolchildren in the country....
There have been a series of attacks on schools and schoolchildren around China in recent years, some by people who have lost their jobs or felt left out of the country's economic boom.
The story comes almost as if to make the point: Liberals talk about banning guns as if it's the same as banning murder and banning evil. That's why they are so dogmatic and emotional on the point: How can you be in favor of murder? How can you oppose banning evil?
But guns are not the same as murder, and murder is not the same as guns. Here, in China, a man showed up with murderous intent and armed himself with just a knife. True, he didn't kill as many people as the gun-wielding maniac (or maniacs) in Connecticut did. I suppose that will be the lesson the left draws from this.
Note, by the way, that such attacks have escalated in China due to job dislocations and poor economic circumstances (at least for some). One can find a lot of Hidden Causes, and some additional Villains Behind It All, if one likes.

Indeed. Perhaps it should be mandatory that one school official be armed and proficient in weapons use.
Now that I think about it, why hasn't this been done already?

What is it about economic trouble and killing kids? If I decided that the answer to my ennui was killing a bunch of people, I'd at least make it a building full of lawyers. But every maniac's default is freakin' kids.
Unreal.

Seriously though, why shouldn't one responsible adult, the principal, PE teacher, whatever, be required to have a weapon at every school so that in case some nutso walks in you have SOME POSSIBLE DEFENSE rather than just running or hiding and hoping not to get shot.

"The worst mass school murder in American history took place on May 18,1927 in Bath Township, Mich., when a former school board member set off three bombs that killed 45 people."
Perspective.
I also think the media should stop broadcasting this stuff, at least the shooter's picture. It's a big fantasy to them, where they make some big point and are famous for a minute or two...before they die. It's like every movie with the hero outrunning a fireball: "I wanna be that guy!"

I put this in the previous thread, but it seems more appropriate here:
"The Dunblane school massacre occurred at Dunblane Primary School in the Scottish town of Dunblane on 13 March 1996. The gunman, 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton (b. 10 May 1952), entered the school armed with four handguns, shooting and killing sixteen children and one adult before committing suicide. Along with the 1987 Hungerford massacre and the 2010 Cumbria shootings, it remains one of the worst criminal acts involving firearms in the history of the United Kingdom.
Public debate subsequent to these events centred on gun-control laws, including media-driven public petitions calling for a ban on private ownership of handguns and an official enquiry, the Cullen Report. In response to this debate, the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997 and the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 were enacted, which effectively made private ownership of handguns illegal in the United Kingdom."
So...we can expect the same push to make handguns illegal here, 2nd Amendment or no.(note that the Cumbria shootings referred to above occurred in 2010, and involved a rifle and shotgun, both licensed, not a handgun.)

Read that again.
Its because of an incident years back where some Palestinian terrorists (of course) tried to shoot up a kindergarden.
Anyway, this creates a situation where 24 year old female Israeli Kindergarden teachers take the kids out on field trips packing Uzi submachine guns.
Liberals heads would explode if that happened here, but even in Israel (which, contrary to what many believe, has an active peacenik left rivalling anything in the USA) its accepted with a shrug as the best medicine to prevent the sort of tragedy that happened today in CT.

They made that mistake once with Jared Loughner and their whole "violent right wing rhetoric" accusations were blown out of the water when Loughner's videos were discovered.
So, now they scrub the internet trail before releasing names, unless the shooter has ties to Republicans, then it's different.
Posted by: soothsayer at December 14, 2012 09:59 AM (G/zuv)
Another interesting concept in group think is where people that still have no idea what really happened will immediately begin constructing narratives for exactly why it happened. It might be a good idea to at least wait until the bodies cool off and the shooter is identified before expounding on the precise pathology behind the act.

Attacking children with knives seems to be a regular event in China.
The fact of the matter is if you are in the mood to murder, maim, or produce mayhem, you're going to find a way to do it. Our reaction to such violence shouldn't be to blame the weapons used -- that's foolish and nonsensical. It doesn't do anything except force sociopaths and psychos to get creative. We should be blaming the cultural and social framework that not only allows these miscreants to bloom into monsters, but that also fails to equip the killers themselves with the appropriate moral and ethical compass to realize that what they want to do is wrong and that they need to do something RIGHT instead.

...Culture has consequences.
Yeah, I can't help but think that these things play a role in these events of mayhem.
We see sociopaths held up as being worthy of our sympathy.
It sinks into people's brains, that taking out a lot of people in a 'blaze of glory' is some sort of accomplishment.

Houses equipped with government monitoring devices.
It's funny you should mention that. Back in HS, we had some guy give our gov't class a lecture on the future. He said there'd be sensors inside all houses to detect drugs. One student dared to challenge him on this. He wasn't pleased. I believe the phrase, "Oh no you won't" was used.
That one student became one of my best buds and taught me a lot about politics during the summer school class we both had to attend for... wait for it... government.

I can't think of bikinis right now. Well....I can but we probably shouldn't.

Depends on who the children is. They don't give a shit if the dead toddler is an Israeli murdered by rockets, for example.

Not to take anything away for this horrific act, but a little perspective might be useful. After the reigns of Genghis Khan, Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin and Mao. The bubonic plague, the Indonesian tsunami, the earthquake in Haiti, AIDS in Africa, 1918 flu pandemic, Mt. Vesuvius burying Pompeii, etc. The idea that this is the event that signals the end times seems a little anticlimactic. It's pretty bad, no question - but it's not exactly Rwanda in 1998.

Leftists will spend forever analyzing this situation, trying to suss out the WHY, to no end except what they can twist in their favor. They will make excuses for this pathetic POS because of any number of rationales, but in the end, nobody can know the WHY.
It is the WHAT that needs to be punished, to hell with the WHY. Nobody cares why he did it--that implies that we could somehow have controlled the situation and changed the outcome. If we could have, why didn't we? Because we can't.
Some people are shits. Some people are headed for hell as fast as they can get there.

I actually saw two of our local progs on one of the locals bitching about all the shootings lately, and one mentioned the kinfe attacks. The other said yes, it IS a cultural thing, but she felt safer when she was there, because she is fit and can outrun someone with a knife.
I can't fathom "feeling unsafe" as a natural state (outside of a warzone, or SE DC, or...you know what I mean).
But these ARE the people who are afraid of their food, their clothing, water, breathing, etc ad naus

Not only is it difficult to simply "outrun" a person with a knife intent on cutting you, even if you had a gun, the knife-man has the advantage within 21 feet.
It's true. Unless you already have your weapon unholstered, cocked, ready to fire, and aimed, you're gonna get cut if he's closer than 21 feet.
Knives are bloody awful weapons.

Yet with all of the redundant reports while the anchors stall for time for just about ANYTHING to report, it won't be long before it's reported that watching breaking stories like this cause something akin to post time killing brain cell death disorder or some other lib pop ailment.
I just heard a female doctor on ABC radio (they broke into Rush's show) actually say that people listening to reports of this across the country are in danger of getting PTSD.
The stupid is accelerating.
