A Big Massive...Olympic Opening Ceremony [Journolist]
— Open Blogger

Forgive me if this is a wee bit presumptuous of me, however, after last evening's taped delayed 5 ring Olympic extravaganza performed under Danny Boyle's (B)ig (M)assive monkey pawed vision, (in what appeared to be a melding of trip time with Timothy Leary, Clockwork Orange and Dante's 9th ring) I thought we may need an outlet to depressurize. Given that the opening morsels our well heeled and teethed Londoners served us have been nearly digested by now, I think a good debriefer is definitely in order.

Speaking in the collective, and sticking with the digestive genre, yes... I believe the opener was one big massive.

Cheerio... Oh and Drew... sorry for the big foot. I really had to go and couldn't hold it any longer... and well it just wouldn't be the AOSHQ without post on post. Not that there's anything wrong with that...post on post that is.

6 It was dreadful. It purported to present a timeline of British history that went something like this: good bucoloc feudal age, very green; evil smoke-spitting industrial age where Capital oppressed Labor; age og glory when the National Health Service was instituted (we kid you not); the British Invasion pop wave; and Harry Potter. Yep, that's British history for you! And BTW, the NHS thing seemed like a thumb in the eye of American conservatives who are resisting the good intentions of the Black Messiah. Why else put it there?

And correct me if I'm wrong but the lyrical intonation of When Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" song, is probably something that you really shouldn't be singing in front of the queen of england and the archbishop of canterbury, let alone the whole world.

And of course, that clever Mr. Boyle had the main character, wearing a tee shirt with "Relax" emblazoned on it.

What a creep show.

9 Apparently, the Brit press thought the opening ceremonies were the greatest thing since the invention of...anything. The accounts I've seen just couldn't praise that steaming pile enough, and some were downright catty about the Queen not showing more enthusiasm....

She had to have been thinking: "we paid 25 million pounds for this crap?"

But it certainly fit in with NBC's "coverage" of the games.

At least the parts I saw didn't show Moo-Chelle. Wonder if they sat her on a special Wide Chair?

10 We caught some of it while enjoying a brownie at the Tilted Kilt last night.  I thought the dessert was laced with a psychedelic at first.

Then I realized it was just the British making asses of themselves.  Mystery solved.  The place apparently got sick of it, because they changed the channel once Beckham was speeding across the Thames in a motorboat with the torchbearer on the front, obviously giggling at the insanity.

We somehow missed the floating Mary Poppins that came to defeat Lord Voldemort, or so Tumblr tells me.  I'm glad.

Creep show today, mainstream acceptance tomorrow.  It's the new normal.  Citizens, you are out of step with what is accepted.

I'm sure there will be some kind of award given to "Danny Boyle" with respect to this floorshow.  That is the way of these things.  I would like a count of how many articles that are written that call it "genius".

20 And one more thing. Very dismissive (but hilarious) send-up of Chariots of Fire with Mr Bean upstaging Simon Rattle. It almost seemed like the hipsters who put this thing together were ashamed of Britain's most famous Olympic moment...presumably because of its religious overtones.

Thirty years ago, I was stationed in England...the British press hasn't changed one damn bit in all that time. The best part of English "journalism" was the Page Three Girl in the Sun.

I'm sure the Queen was mumbling something about "they think the Royal Family wastes a buttload of money? How 'bout this crap???"

Honestly, I think that was the worst thing I have ever seen on TV.

And I couldn't believe how bored ALL the Royals looked, even the younger ones.

I'm almost glad it was a total creep show to many viewers.  It should discourage a new generation of kids from thinking that the Olympics is something wonderful, when it is really just some kind of  massive con game.

The IOC makes a bucketload of cash off these farces and swan about like they are royalty, the host country usually goes deeply into the red ink, and a bunch of goofy "amateurs" prance about in their usual manner.

Among some of the athletes are, I am sure, really wonderful people who are great spirited athletes.  But most of them are children who have failed to grow up.  I once thought Bruce Jenner was a great athlete when he won the Decathalon back in the '76 Olympics (I think it was).  Since then he has been nothing but a fool and a poltroon. He ditched his pretty, loyal wife who supported him through all the obscure AAU meets he competed in. Went totally stupid Hollywood, and is now hooked up with those slutty Kardashians.

What a waste of skin.

79 Fun Facts about the Opening Ceremony:

The Cuban swim team was disqualified after they attempted to float a 57 Chevy in the Olympic pool during training.

The Somali rowing team was unable to attend after being detained by the US Navy off the Horn of Africa for piracy.

Since the 1940s the Swiss have melted down all Olympic gold medals in order to turn them into gold teeth which they ship to Germany.

All Polish medals are divided between Russia and Germany.

The Norwegian rowing team once got lost during training and ended up raiding the French coast.

The Pakistani team saved money this Olympics, since they only had to commute from the two bedroom flat that they all share in London.  They did, however, have to arrange time off from their job at the local supermarket.

The Italians switched sides twice during the opening ceremony.

The US was denied permission to enter on the back of "Bitchin' monster trucks."  Permission was likewise denied to hold a kegger on the center mound.

Three member of the Pakistani team were killed by a US drone strike.  US officials claim it was a Taliban meeting, while Pakistani officials claim that it was nothing but a wedding celebration.

82 We trolled the Brit papers before NBC aired the event, and most comments were along the lines of nobody outside of we Brits are going to get most of this. The whole things seemed disjointed, and so much of what has made Great Britain great was completely avoided. I am sure, considering the source, Boyle, it is no shock as to why. Still, there is so much the Brits have contributed, for good, that we here find it sad these accomplishments went overlooked just so a political point for the NHS could be scored. On a musical front, does anyone find it odd that Sir Elton John was not even played during that whole Frankie and Johnny ordeal we had to endure? No Bee Gees except for during the walk in? And how about the complete overlooking of Tennyson, Coleridge, Johnson, Keats, Yates, or even Austin for that matter? What about Tolkien? I mean outside of the hill looking like a Hobbit hill, there was so much that could have been highlighted regarding Brit Lit. Then there are the sciences such as engineering, and what about the cars? No DB9, no Morgan, no Rolls Royce, or Jaguar. For the love of heaven, the mini that rolled in was not even vintage, and had no Union Jack on the roof!! In the end, the whole thing was a loss, for not just the viewers, but for the British people, who, if you look back, have contributed much more to the world other than the Sex Pistols.

83 To be honest, I'm glad that the IOC and hosting countries refuse to honor the victims of Munich.  I wouldn't want the IOC on my side on anything as they totally disgust and repulse me and I think it best that they continue to show their true colors in public so that no one can really claim to not know what they're about (even though the brain-dad idiots will continue to plead ignorance, it will be that much harder for them to do so).

Great Britain isn't doing anything to Israel or Jews in their refusal that they don't do to themselves with their daily submission to islam, anyway.  Britain never liked Jews, anyway - not since the expulsion, at least, and should stay true to their beliefs in that little bit.  They've given up all their other beliefs and traditions.  At least they have that one left.

106

I tried to summarize:

Once upon a time, England was like the Garden of Eden. Life was simple, wonderful, and agrarian. Then along came the Evil Capitalists! Their factories were ugly, dirty, spewed smoke into the air, smelled bad (they even subjected the audience to the smell of sulphur!), and they used their machines to kill people by the million in WWI.

Then along came some guy nobody's ever heard of, who allegedly invented the WorldWideWeb (which apparently owes nothing to the creation of the integrated circuit, or the Internet, which happened in the US). Then everybody could communicate! Because of this, a nice young black couple (because apparently most people in England are black) were able to hook up, in a process that involves lots of obscure, yet shitty, Britishrock music, plus some rap music.

Somehow this, and the Olympics, has something to do with Socialized Medicine, which somehow relates to all the children in England being orphans living at hospitals. Fortunately for them, British literature is full of all kinds of really scary bogey-men, so they can have nightmares. But wait! Here comes Super NannyState, er make that "nanny", Mary Poppins to drive away the boogins (because she does that now). OK, now I'm lost. Maybe this is where the Queen parachuted in with James Bond (well, why the hell NOT?).

There were some bright spots, but mostly, it's a "What the hell were you thinking?" situation.

118 #85  I had two rants on the morning thread about these ceremonies.

When I went to bed I had BBC on the radio and they dragged in one theater or movie critic after another to tell us how wonderful it was.  Then they made the mistake of interviewing the Aussie who did the Sydney opening ceremonies.

He said that most people outside of Britain would have been confused,  and that it had stuff going on which was interesting but not only could the television people not cover it,  but the people in the stadium couldn't see it because the giant smokestacks blocked their view.  He felt that it was too confusing and too ambitious.

And then e said he had been reading some American blogs and they didn't like it or get it at all.

Boy,  did they hustle him out of the studio!  HA!

Then the two announcers spent a lot of time talking about how they assumed everyone knew British history and it was a complex and wonderfully thought-out piece.  And they loved the NHS segment,  of course.

I am so angry about this (and the Obama ads which keep popping up on NBC's coverage) that it has soured me on the Olympics and also on the UK,  which I just visited for the Jubilee and felt that the people liked us.

Now that they have their insulting "I rented my flat to a fat American" tote bags and T-shirts and have injected themselves into our election with their Olympic presentation (and a big FU to Cameron,  who is a squish and not at all conservative except as it suits him) I will plan my next trip to somewhere in the US and keep my tourist money at home.

The inference from the British press that the rest of the world (and especially America) wouldn't  "get it", insulates them from the jaw - dropping ridicule that might appear from place to place in the days to come.

It is, after all, about "them", the British, the citizens of the United Kingdom. They are telling their story.  It is instructive to realize that this is the way some see themselves and their country.  So like the Monty Python players wondering if American audiences would "get" their humor; yes Virginia, we did "get it".

I find most of the Superbowl halftime shows to be absolutely ridiculous and adsurd productions, but fortunately, they are only 15 minutes long.  This silliness went on for HOURS.

140 One issue that was discussed during the NFL lockout last year was how the quality of TV hurt gate revenue for the teams. Now in addition to the view and the comfort of one's own home, the crispness of HD and (maybe later) 3D make the experience even more attractive. It's probably even more stark for the Olympics. Why anyone who is not family would stay in a hellaciously expensive city like London to watch a few seconds of grown men running a stick around a stadium when the view is so much better --and cheaper-- at home is beyond me. I hope that financially the games are a FAIL for London and serve as a last great gasp of the libtard EUnuch bread and circus culture.

143 I guess I should explain why this ceremony enraged me.  My mother was an English literature major and taught in public schools (before they went to crap).   I was brought up with a love of English history and literature.

I can tel you the names of Henry VIII's wives in order.  I know about half of the Battles in the Penninsular Campaign in the war against Napoleon.  Half of my heritage is Scot so I love the pipes and the clans.

And 4 years ago I was so excited that Britain would follow the Chinese,  because I was certain they would do a good job.  Obviously,  the Royal Family was NOT involved.

It has been such a crushing disappointment,  so I guess I will find something else to interest me.  Jeez-o-pete,  you would think someone in that country would realize what they have become.  (Well, I know some do,  because I spoke to people in Canterbury  who were NOT HAPPY.)

Anyway,  I will stop ranting.  Rio will probably at least put on a non-depressing opening ceremony.

But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Michigan's Governor and the mayor of Detroit have expressed interest in bringing the 2024 games to Detroit due to the economic impact. Michigan possesses multiple sporting venues which could be used. Uh, no......most of us conservative folk leave that "looking to be offended" shit, for the professionally-aggrieved whiney butt liberals who specialize in it.

I'd say that most conservatives are dismayed and disgusted by the celebration of socialist statism that was on display.

Not...."offended".

243 Optimizer did such a great job I feel moved to repeat myself from this morning... The Olympic opening ceremony was hilariously awful. Clumsy, kitschy, depressing--what were they thinking? Things got off to a rollicking start in Merrie Olde England, a shire-like bucolic utopia apparently, with Kenneth Branaugh declaiming furiously from The Tempest. What? Are we saying we like this feudalism stuff? A little bit of Marx's sentimentality creeping in? A good lord to protect us and take care of us? Nothing here about the Hundred Years War. Nothing about all those kings and queens and aspirers happily killing off their rivals and the husbands of people they wanted to marry. Just--green, green, green. You know, before the carbon-belching machines came along to cause Global Warming. Next all of this idyllic greenness was overthrown by the "Industrial Revolution." No kidding--like it was a real person or something! Huge ugly smokestacks came up out of the ground like ever so many heteronormative organs and began belching perfidious smoke, besmirching the landscape and causing all the children to cry. Then there was a break in the smoke-occluded sky. Along came the worthy NHS! Yes, hundreds of beds occupied by those former crying children appeared on the stage as Real Doctors and Real Nurses pretended to tend them! Oh, it was a stirring moment. I imagine the Queen cried. Tell me, would you really want to be having your personal health care crisis in a large room with thirty or forty fellow sufferers? And what about incontinence? Showers? But don't worry. Here comes the sun. Yes, it's the glory days of the British Invasion. A snippet of the Beatles, the Stones, Queen, even a wayward entourage from Sgt Pepper!!! (Where the hell was Twiggy?) So let's see if we've got this straight. British history consists of (roughly) four epochs. There was bucolic feudalism with Calibans running around declaiming Shakespeare in the hills. There was the dirty stinky Industrial Revolution. There was the NHS poking people with needles. And then there was the glorious British Invasion. Leftist interpretation of history? Sheer idiocy? Who can tell?

244 249 Eliz I was a tyrant. She had spies and tax collectors everywhere, heads on sticks greeted everyone who entered the city, she dismissed the veterans of her wars with no pensions and they died in poverty. The system was to tax every lively hood and award the money to her favorites. Could you imagine that today? Posted by: Redd at July 28, 2012 05:15 PM (R63QS) --Of course, when I wrote "greatest" I implied no moral weight. The simple fact is that England prospered and grew and began to rule the waves. True, she (like her half-sister) ruled as a bitch on wheels but the irony is that those conditions spurred lots of colonial settlement which only enhanced England's position as a global power.

I have a horrible shake made from 50 grams of oats, 30 grams of whey protein, a pint of whole milk, and 10 grams of colostrum, which is the first milk of a cow that has just given birth. It's absolutely horrible. The colostrum overpowers anything else in the shake and makes it just revolting.  And that's it, that's breakfast.

I've tried to get people to try it, but they won't. Just the smell of it is enough to put people off – it knocks most people for six. It's like drinking gone-off milk.

So...how many gallons of "stream water" did the guy in Oregon divert?

Do the articles say?

I've heard of such rules, in rural areas....pertaining to daming up a stream, and creating a pond or small lake.

It takes the water away from property owners downstream.

You have to allow the same amount of water to flow-through your reservoir....or you're in violation.

But you're still able to dig a pond, out in the open, away from any streams...and let it gradually fill with rain water.

At least in most states, you are.

Property tax is government's way of telling you you will never own  land. Even if you pay off the mortgage, you are still just renting that land from the local government.

All tax is theft.

321 The problem with the Oregon guy is that he had two very large reservoirs on his property. They don't mind a pond but if you're storing enough water you can cause a massive flood, that's a matter of some concern.

Well, that was the theory.

But it hasn't worked out that way.

That 'concept' predates the formation of government unions...which have become predatory leeches on the public purse.

The result is the anti-consumer, anti-taxpayer situation that we currently are at the mercy of.

336 @88-Nickless, thanks for the mea culpa. LOL! Lots of people forget they went to Aussie land. @95 Filly- Thanks! Our kids played college soccer with a girl from GB, and we have a different view of all things British, so we got a few of the references. She stayed with us over their spring break once, and it was a real learning experience. LOL! Still not for the whole milk in the tea bit. Blech. And +1 to Top Gear. Love those guys. They give Boris a hard time each time he is on the show, and point out he is a communist. Something Brockaw purposely left off last night when chatting about Boris' hair cut, and how awesome he was as London's mayor. @121 Miss Marple- Our kids still stay in touch with the Brit player via Skype, and her Dad will pop in to say hi to our kids during their Skyping sessions. He usually greets them with, "Hey Yanks!", and never by their names. I do not doubt there was, and will continue to be, resentment or snarks towards Americans via the Brits, and the British press. Fascists have reigned supreme across the pond for far too long. It is a shame really when you think about who the British peoples once were. But not all of them think of us negatively. In one sense the Brits are no different than many Americans who have lost their past, and in turn have lost their precious, individual and unique national identities. It would be great if both countries could have a resurgence of patriotism. +1 to #265- Mega Dittos! If they can acknowledge music from the 1970's, they could have at least tossed in some Dr. Who, and some Monty Python! And to whomever mentioned the Dyson sucking everything up. LMAO!

I have long referred to "The fantasy of home ownership."  How many other things do you have to keep paying for indefinitely, even if you "own" them? Yeah, that's actually called "renting".

But it's worse than that, even!! Since the Kelo decision, if the local dopes who run your municipality decide they want your property for something, they can pretty much just take it, and you get to accept whatever they feel like paying you for it.

Still think you're a home owner? What do you think this IS? America??

349 Another problem with state-run schools is that they then have to teach according to the state's Constitution, and ultimately the Federal Constitution. And, as keeps getting proven in court, that means: no school prayer, no "questioning" of evolution, no crosses, no Bible - no of any of the stuff Conservatives like.

Take the state out of the school system and immediately all those problems go away.

That's why privatizing schools seems the way to go.  Let the  people who actually have children pay for their eduation.  Give them a large income tax break to do it.

And for the commenter upthread that said that their property taxes paid for  sewer service, water, etc., in OK we pay that seperately.  Property taxes are for only schools here.  It's a waste of my money, IMHO.

Why couldn't they have done something like that?  It would have fitted so well with the Olympics' "Faster, Higher, Stronger' theme too!  But no, that would have been too obvious, and too celebratory of Britain and its past.  Just imagine a flash of a Concorde through that stadium - it would have been great, and would have been worth the cost of devising it.

Posted by: and irresolute at July 28, 2012 07:21 PM (Q492A)

I really like some of his movies.  Slumdog Millionaire was good fun.  Sunshine was a great movie - and the only decent role in that movie was the conservative.  Sunshine was almost an advertisement for why you should never let leftists take part in mission critical operations.  His other movies have been okay - but the music is almost always good.

I'm glad I didn't see the Olympic ceremonies so I can still think well of Boyle ... at least, for now.

I've mentioned this before, she's become nothing more then an over the hill pole stripper that sings. If she was preforming at the local strip club no man under sixty would pay the two drink minimum to watch her.

She's been taking testosterone injections for a number of years now...and has a more masculine body than Justin Beiber. Hell...Barney's Frank is starting to find her attractive. How the rest of the world sees anything at all arousing in that has been is beyond me.

But no, instead there was the weird "boy meets girl" segment which made no sense, other than to prove once again that youts are self absorbed twats.

See, and I would take serious issue with even the "singing" part.  Her range is like a note and a half, and she's been heavily Autotuned since the dawn of Autotune time.

Use the HOSTS file ploy I did.  It will work with anything that has TCP/IP on it.  Its a nuclear weapon that sends any references to sm3.sitemeter.com to a localhost black hole.

485 In completely random news, I finally got around to watching Contagion the other night and now I'm ticked at Soderbergh.  Not only did he manage to make a movie about a global pandemic outbreak boring, he also made me feel bad for Matt Damon.  That's just not right.

OK - sticking my hand up slowly to comment that, indeed, during last night's Opening Ceremony, the ridiculous FAR outweighed the sublime. The whole NHS segment was just mind-bogglingly wierd/strange/stupid/WTF. You've got billions watching you on TV, England, and your go-to "Here's what we got, World" moment features your Health Care System??!! Which might not cost you anything monetarily, but can very probably cost you your life. And, no, NBC, the fact that those are "real doctors and nurses" out there does not make it better. Makes it even stranger.

However, I absolutely LOVED the James Bond/Queen entry into the stadium. It was jaw-droppingly amazing that she actually went along with doing this. Some might decry the non-majesticness of it, but in this stupid, awful-news-always world, sometimes there needs to be something that is done in fun and lightness. And, altho I'm in the minority on this blog, I love Daniel Craig as James Bond, so watching him in a tux for any length of time was no problem at all.

Bob Costas practically lost his small mind (goes with his small body) that the IOC chose not to make mention or honor thse involved in the 1972 Munich Olympic Tragedy. There was a rumor that he was going to go rogue and present his own moment of silence, complete with an NBC video clips of what went on. Well, he didn't, but every word that he did speak last night about it was dripping with "You uttter-assholes!!" There's very little that Bob and I politically agree on, but I was right there with him in his emotion.

487 what's to stop them from changing it to sm4.sitemeter.com

Nothing.  Then I just make another entry if they continue to be a problem.  If they're responsive, then I don't care.

Yup, Outbreak at least that one had monkeys in it.  Okay, monkeys other than the ones being used to incubate potential anti-virals.

I was watching the original Andromeda Strain a few weeks back and it struck me how very little happens but it's still riveting.  Contagion not so much.   I did like that Jude Law played himself aka an utter fucking asshole.

497 Just got back from Chick-fil-A. Yummy. I had the spicy chicken sandwich meal with buffalo sauce. Although I'm normally an ice tea man (when I'm not drinking alcoholic beverages, that is), based on moron recommendations I opted for the lemonade. I could see lightning in the distance on the way home, and it's just now starting to rain. This Chick-fil-A is close to home, but is not on my usual driving routes. It's near a movie theater, and the only times I've eaten there before were when I went to movies. However, I rarely go to movies anymore since I've been boycotting Hollywood leftists. Ironic, eh?

Don't think I've ever seen that in the olympics. Posted by: Tami Handball is big in eastern Europe. Since most of the IOC are European, I am not surprised they got rid of softball/baseball for handball. For what it's worth, baseball bats are illegal in Poland, since they can be weapons. You have to have a permit to have one, and show documentation that you are on a sponsored team. Strangely, the Poles love baseball, and have a number of teams. I guess this is a holdover from Soviet rule-making sure the Poles aren't armed in any way.

The Poles aren't that stupid.  My uncle who is Polish told me all about when he was a kid and the guys in the neighborhood all walked around with a long sock and a potato.  A sizable spud slipped down a long sock is a pretty good stand-in for a medieval mace in street fight.
