— Ace This is a neat thing, I think.
Do you need a physical computer keyboard? Well, what if a lightbulb just projected the image of a keyboard on your desk's top, and detected your fingers' motions along the projected keys?
And as far as viewing pictures: Do you really need a monitor? Wouldn't an image projected from a bulb against a white wall do the trick? (Given a sufficiently high-def projection and a sufficiently clean and reflective wall, of course.)
And with more and more actual computer work being done via the cloud... it's interesting to think that in five years a very "cheap" computer might consist of nothing more than one light-bulb screw-in accessory (for the "keyboard") and one high-def projection bulb (to project all visual content against a white wall or bit of reflective scrim you could roll up like a rag). All computation would be done in a cloud, away from any of the two small physical components.
In ten years the "portable computer" might be nothing but a little laser projector and a roll-up scrim.

And projections just don't cut it and aren't likely to in the near to medium future. Monitor projections onto a wall don't have the dynamic range and color rendering that you can get from a monitor. And touch-typing is very difficult without any tactile feedback.

Google has those in testing. They look unbelievably wrong, stupid, and like they'll mess up your face (and other people's, when you smash into them because you have meatspin in your eye).
It's basically the Segway of computers, so it'll have the same fate in the market: for bureaucratic use only. But Google's business plan seems increasingly aimed at its becoming the official techo-oppression arm of the government, so that's probably a good investment for them.
You wouldn't buy it. But you'll pay for it.

There's nothing in this idea that precludes you from issuing a command to back up your data to a local, separate device. In Omaha and Detroit, if you wish. With confirmations of backup. But these datastores don't have to be directly physically connected to the interface portions, the i/o of your interaction with the web.
I'm not real keen on the idea of my data being stored in the cloud either. Hackers are already too successful in getting into your data as it is.

Its interesting and of course certainly possible. I of course hate the idea of "the cloud." Having an offsite backup or access to your files from anywhere is certainly good, but to not have phyiscal access and to keep your main files at your location just never sits well with me. So something like this would certainly be great as a secondary computer, but I can see some people saying that the home computer will become a thing of the past because of it.

In fainess, MS has being working on something similar using Kinect in their future tech labs. Problem was it required basically wearing a Kinect sensor like a parrot on your shoulder.
Upside, computer literally anywhere (hold out hand, computer, go to wall, computer. Project on girlfriend's boobehs, computer.)
This is sort of a logical extension of that. I still think in the end you'll need some hardware somewhere. (Perhaps iPhone sized.) Of course we already have iPhone miniprojectors and laser keyboards, so maybe we're almost there (we just need the high powered cloud OS to finish it off.)

It's not availability that bothers me. It's the idea that once your data's out there, the security of that data is at the mercy of whoever holds it. And whether it's vulnerable to crackers attacking it despite the holder's efforts to stop them, or plumbed for demographics and interests to be sold to the highest bidder, or agencies peeking with the holder's cooperation, it's still out of your hands.
Basically, if you're going to store something in "the cloud" make sure it's something you wouldn't mind anyone and everyone having access to. Your collection of LOLCats is probably okay. Your financial data is <b>not</b>.

No one can reliably predict the political future. And anyone who says they can is bullshitting you and probably themselves as well.
So even if people do choose the strong form of Let It Burn, there's no guarantee how much or of what form the burning will take or even if there will be a burning. People seem to just assume it will either be a complete reset of society or a Mad Max-style apocalypse. But a more likely option is something like present-day Argentina.

Aside perhaps from graphic intense games, computer hardware has far surpassed the computing power needed by most home PC user who uses their computer to check e-mail, surf the web, and maybe edit digital photos.
Where it used to be that a two year old computer was obsolete or nearly so, now a three year old PC still performs well for what most people use them for.
A professional graphic artist or engineer might need all the computing power they can get, but playing poker online and cropping your drunk uncle out of your Christmas photos? Your old Pentium dual core will do just fine.
I have to think that somewhere, someone is looking into ways to exploit the currently unused computing power of modern PCs, but I have no idea what the Next Big Thing will be.

Meh, in fairness you hardly ever use the full potential of your computer of a sustained period.
So a buy in whereby you got so much processing power to use from the big bin wouldn't necessarily be "socialistic" (provided you could buy what you wanted and not pay for other people's useage.) But yeah, moral hazard to be sure.

Just a guess: virtural telepresence in a Google Earth like environment will take up a small amount of that kind of power. People could 'meet-up' in locations or even multiple locations at the same time. E.G. A manager tele-jumps to the factory floor while at hq and has an free-lance engineer follow along with him all in virtual.

Hawkeye in the Avengers movie had little keypads on his hips that were contoured to the palms of his hands. He would "punch in" what arrow tip and shaft he wanted and his robotic quiver popped it out for him.
Such "glove keypads" do exist.
It would take some re-learning but this would be a more portable keyboard than the standard QWERTY ones.
I hear Zach Moffat wanted a pair of those to run ORCA.

If you are talking about the constant reminder that men constantly sexually objectify women. Yes women are built to understand, and even exploit that, and have done so for centuries.
I think most women who are in relationships with men who openly peruse porn understand a couple of things.
1. At least he's objectifying women who
a. agreed to be objectified
b. are unavailable.
2. If a man ever stops looking at other women sexually, it follows he will stop looking at his spouse sexually.
I suspect that women who object to male use of porn, either don't understand men, are really really insecure, or are easily made jealous.

159 iTunes. The worst thing ever.
You can't do ANYTHING with an apple device without iTunes.
-----------
Wouldn't be so bad if they didn't keep breaking it.
Had an iPhone 3GS for years with no trouble. Bought an iPhone 5. iTunes on my trusty Leopard Mac won't talk to it. So I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard (but, no, can't buy it online; you have to call Apple and plead your case) so I can run iTunes 10.7.
But iTunes 10.7 doesn't reliably sync. Every time I sync, my phone says <number> items could not be synched. See iTunes for more information, but iTunes doesn't say anything; it thinks it worked. So I have to synch each device several times to get all the info on it.
Which might not be too bad, except that sometimes it decides that it needs to fail to transfer things that are already on the stupid iDevice. So after synching, I now can't access things that I could access just a minute ago, before synching. Because iTunes decided that thing needed to be transferred, then failed to do so.
Updated to iTunes 11 yesterday, hoping this issue had been fixed, but no. It hasn't.

In a book written by a lifelong friend of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, the diplomat who may soon be a Secretary of State nominee explained that she routinely confers with President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton before making decisions.
She also explained that ”people know not to mess with me. And if they haven’t learned, and they try, then they will learn.”
The interview provides new insight into the communications and briefing procedures likely employed by the White House after the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
