A dissenting view of the NRA statement [CharlieBrown'sD????]

DrewM explained his reasons for disliking the NRA's statement on the Newtown shooting in a post on Friday. And like the typical rationalist that most of us are, he took it apart for some pretty good reasons, one of which is that using federal dollars and creating one more top-heavy boondoggle to put armed guards in every school in the nation is not in our best interest. As he correctly points out, it is, thankfully, an exceedingly rare event, and would be a huge waste of resources to try to prevent in that way.

But.... ...whether it was an accident or by intent, the NRA succeeded in forcing the MBM and the left (but I repeat myself) to refocus their attention away from "ASSAULT WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!" and onto something different. And who cares that the new topic doesn't make perfect sense. It puts into the public consciousness the idea that maybe gun-free zones aren't such a good idea. And maybe a double-tap, and a third to the head of the bedwetting little ponce who perpetrated this evil is a better way of dealing with the issue than another round of demonization of inanimate objects.

Was it perfect? Oh, hell no! We stink at this kind of manipulation. But it was an attempt, and I think it was partly successful. Someone (not Thomas Jefferson) once said, "never let a crisis go to waste." Using a page from their playbook isn't such a bad thing.

[Addendum] Hopeless, in comment #104 nails it:

Blame is different from solutions. Blaming Hollywood doesn't mean censor them. It means blame them because they are the enemy and that's how politics is played.

8 There are other rare, yet dangerous, events at schools. Fires are rare and dangerous. Earthquakes are rare and dangerous. Tornadoes are rare and dangerous. Nuclear attacks are rare and dangerous.

And yet for each of these, teachers have stepped up - with no extra pay - and taken responsibility for their students. They lead them in fire drills; they lead them to the basement for tornado safety; and they even taught them to duck and cover.

But ask a teacher to get trained in the responsible use of a firearm - a technology that is centuries older than nuclear weapons, and well understood - and they wet their pants. They go into visceral writhing like a fish on a hook.

It's pitiful. I'll grant you that this isn't something for every teacher, but I'll challenge you to convince me that there aren't *some* teachers who would take the training and accept the responsibility.

And I'll tell you this: at least half of the teachers in Newtown would have given their left eye to have a firearm and training on how to use it once the shooting started.

Life is hard. No sane person likes having to defend themselves - it is intrinsically unpleasant.

So is childbirth. So is cancer. So are a lot of things in life.

I'm in the "let it burn" camp, so won't say "at some point liberals will grow up."

They won't. Instead they will wet their pants and stomp on my liberties.

Liberals suck. Anyone with a child in school should loathe liberals. They don't want to defend your children, and they don't want YOU to defend your own children.

10 Question for liberals. Where do the gangs in Chicago get the guns they used to kill 420-some kids this year? Do the bring them in from Mexico and Latin America along with the drugs? I rather think they do, because if they were buying in Gary IN from legal sellers we would get some headlines about it. The excellent article from Correia says that Utah allows guns in schools for CCW permit holders. So States can write a law that overrules any fed ban of any guns in a school.

The NRA made the point that with all the money in the federal budget we COULD put a police officer in every school, he didn't actually say that we SHOULD do this. They proposed changing laws and encouraging teacher, principal, concerned parent volunteers be allowed to carry and offered to provide free training programs.

Sometimes, I wonder if I read a different transcript of LaPierre's speech than most folks. he got in a LOT of zingers : -some have exploited the shooting for political gain. -politicians pass laws for gun free zones -we protect our money, our sports stadiums and our politicians - even tfg - with guns, but not our children? -a decline at the federal level in willingness to prosecute dangerous criminals of course, he promoted some values that the left could never abide so they have to focus on whatever is either obvious or whatever they make-up. My favorite line from LaPierre? This: "They're our kids. They're our responsibility. And it's not just our duty to protect them Â— it's our right to protect them."

45 I teach. Crappy hood. I came to school early about s month ago to find out gunshots had been heard in the deveopment right behind the school. The principal didn't know if the police had yet apprehended anyone and parents were showing to drop off kids. Some kids walk from that hood. He asked the" male teachers there "to show a presence" front of the school and along the fenceline. Fuck. I'm out front. Remember the scene in the Godfather when all the cops are pulled from the hospital? And the poor flower guy had to stand out front and pretend he had a gun when the other mob showed up? I thought about it then. Fuckin "no gun zone" dickweeds.

55 "And maybe a double-tap, and a third to the head of the bedwetting little ponce who perpetrated this evil is a better way of dealing with the issue than another round of demonization of inanimate objects." see this is the type of ultra-libertarian argument i can't agree with i'm not defending the liberal dream of banning all guns. i'm talking about referring to something as an "inanimate object" as if that by itself ends the argument. but we acknowledge that the deadliest weapons (machine guns etc.) are already banned and guns aren't allowed absolutely everywhere, for obvious reasons. that seems like an acknowledgement that the "inanimate object" isn't always appropriate. it's not as though being around a gun = someone's going crazy obviously but this "guns don't people people do" slogan is way too simplistic. and if you don't look at things exclusively as point-scoring on the "MBM" then the NRA's performance was overall pretty dumb.

Unfortunately, the conservative base seems to think that merely presenting a logical rational approach is a sufficient counter to any whacko liberal solution. Alas, we need to adopt Churchillian logic and fight them on the beaches, in the hills, on the streets, in the press, and NEVER stop the counter dialog.

Just like the libs don't accept a popular referendum as valid on a topic unless it goes in their preferred direction, they boycott conservative supporters, they conduct incessant lawfare, and do not stop attacking and attacking until the right rolls over and succumbs once again. They are masters of the Alinskyite tactics of destruction, and we need to get as close to this level of attack as possible whilst retaining our basic principles. LaPierre may have set up such a potential situation for us, but we need to keep up the counter-attacks in every media forum we can access.

You just proved my point.

Your rational analysis of a phrase found a logical inconsistancy, or at least a simplification of a complex problem.

The low information voter doesn't care. All he heard from LaPierre was that the answer to a bad guy with a gun was a good guy with a gun, and that has an appealing symmetry and simplicity that dwarfs our logical, rational, data and history based analysis.

During this time all foot traffic has to use a single entrance manned by a security guard. Metal detector there too, perhaps in a secure vestibule between the outer entrance and the inner entrance. Ground floor windows and doors are hardened against forced entry. In the event of fire all doors open from the inside.

Also, have someone patrol the grounds outside the school. Better to engage a threat outside than in.

No shooter could be sure where they'd be shot from, but could assume there would be several kids with rifles shooting at them. LaPierre and co. feel the need to pick up the same kind of emotional appeal in order to turn back some of the moral outrage. It's not a very strong argument, it's one that has been undermined by the public's consumption of the violent H-wood product. It's hard to get popular support for the moral opprobrium to be set on H-wood when they are busy consuming every Saw, Grand Theft Auto, and Kill Bill product released.

However, the NRA like the GOP has repeated ignored the best and most needed response. They failed to make a moral case for our position.

Disarming 99% of legal gun owners is not moral.

Actively interfering with the right to self-defense is immoral and cannot be justified by others insane behavior.

You cannot take others vile behavior to justify destroying the rights of law abiding citizens. That is immoral. Calls to forcably disarm citizens are immoral.

Calls for compromise or further 'common sense' measures are dishonest as well. We have compromise in place. As others have pointed out, our position is the result of compromising from an absolutist position. The 'extreme' position on our side would be to have the current set of prohibitions and regulations removed entirely. No one in the NRA is calling for anything like that.

But, of course, just asking people to acknowledge that there are events that cannot be prevented and that bad things will happen to good people means we will always be vulnerable to emotional arguments if we don't make our own moral arguments calmly, directly, and repeatedly.

100 I don't understand the eye-rolling with the suggestion frankly -- I was lucky enough to go to private elementary and high schools (but only because my parents sacrificed because the public schools were I grew up were horrendous) and they both had armed security details. The DC politicians' kids (and the celebrities' and the big names in MSM's kids as well) go to schools with armed security details. So Obama, et al are talking about the "rabble's" kids being in "gun free zone" schools -- not their kids.
As a society, we guard the things we value: Banks have armed security because they value what's in their safes. Malls have armed security because merchants value their merchandise. And if you want to argue that isn't taxpayer money paying for those 2 things (the cost is passed onto consumers) and supplying a safe place to transact business is the "cost of doing business" just look at federal buildings -- state and federal courthouses and government buildings have armed security, for example, and that is paid for with taxpayer money. The people who work in those building are obviously valued more by the government than children who attend public schools are.
And who said it needed to be Federal dollars spent? Why not state and local communities deciding this issue after lifting the idiotic Federal requirement that these places be "gun free zones?"

The federal government is not supposed to have a single solitary thing to say about schools at the State level. It is not in the list of authorities delegated to the federal government. In fact the original "gun free zone act" ws struck down by the supreme court. Congress changed a couple of weasel words in it and re-passed it. It has not made it back up to SCOTUS again.

We had hash for supper tonite. Done in my cast iron skillet, so it had a great crunchy crust, and when it was done I made a half dozen indents, dropped some eggs in them and put the cover on.

Some toasted sourdough biscuits and life is quite fine.

They are intentionally using the tools and structures of the republic as bludgeoning weapons against the republic to destroy the republic. They have intentionally blinded 2 generations of youth to morality and reason so as to make them controllable by emotivism and cries of blame. Except I can get it in 44M (I'd rather have the 45LC/410ga model). I'm thinking the invader would be mesmerized by its awesomeness. More time for me to aim. But I'd be mesmerized by it as well so...... I'm just curious about the quality of Rossi firearms and the input of enablers.

314 I'm disappointed to say the least that a conservative establishment answer is to create and fund another large government apparatus. Why does the NRA think that the only legitimate group able to handle firearms and protect innocents is a government agent? How hard is it to ask for our Second Amendment rights back, get rid of gun free zones, allow teachers, if they choose, to carry concealed and on their person, anonymously (at least to the public) and be that absolute last line of defense? When seconds count..... But no, the head of the freakin NRA says the answer is more government.

Dudes, it is a very good use of money...as a former board member of a small school I can assure of that! Not for the reasons you think, though. With an armed policeman on our campus for a period of a few years our drug incidents dropped to ZERO, our assaults between students dropped to ZERO and our absentee rate sharply declined (then again we had that officer drag kids to school).

An armed OFFICIAL presence does a remarkable job on the attitudes of our students and that particular cost was well worth it. However, since we were paying for the officer through our county we had to end it because they decided that not only would we pay for the officer but we would also have to annually purchase the equivalent a new cop car for them.....wasn't going to happen.

This is in combination with forced integration and assimilation, that requires Whites to be accepting and allows non-Whites to continue to play us-vs-them ethnic games. That is genocidal for the Whites; it means they will be washed away by a river of not-particularly friendly imported non-Whites. It will take time, but if the system isn't changed the end is sure. But before then, increasingly outnumbered Whites will cease to be a viable political base. And there is no other potentially conservative mass base. The Republican Party gets 90% of its votes from Whites, while Asians and Hispanics go Democrat by huge margins - 2/3 to 3/4 support, which in politics is massive. That means that unless conservatives struggle to reverse this, liberals will win forever, less by persuasion than by getting rid of their opponents' mass base and replacing it with a liberal base. Winning absolutely by getting rid of your opponent's mass base is as "scorched earth" as politics get. That is what is going on now. That is an important reason liberals don't have to be even minimally polite to conservatives. You may be thinking, "we're all in this together for the future," and you may de-escalate because of that; but the liberal vision tacitly calls for the elimination of their opponents: culturally, politically, demographically and permanently. They don't often think about where this is heading, but they don't have a restraining background assumption that "we are going to have to get along with these people, because they and we will always be together, and they will always be present in significant numbers." Liberal pundits such as Charles Blow gloat about "the browning of America" and spread the word that conservatives will not always be around in significant numbers, and that matters. So "scorched earth" is where it's at; and if conservatives don't start struggling for real, this will definitely come to an end.

this was'nt the response i was expecting from the nra but,in an article i read,the teachers unions were the first to cry foul,it would cut into their budget,another it's for the children moment.

the statement made a lot of hypocrites out of most rouge gun control people,hollywooders,and politicians,the ones that utilize armed guards daily.
