— LauraW After the presidential election, there were a lot of angry people on the internet, and a lot of racist tweets about the president. Some of these racist things were tweeted by kids.
Adults who express violent or racist sentiments are one thing.
But should teenagers who say stupid things on the internet be 'outed' to their schools and peers, and should their youthful history always show up on any google search of their name forever and ever?
Gawker sub-site 'Jezebel' seems to think so.
Morrissey collected the offensive tweets, along with the names of the students (the majority of whom are assumedly younger than 18 ), a gleeful accounting of the activities they’d likely list on college applications — such as their sports teams and pageants — their schools, the responses from school officials — the few who responded expressed disapproval — and the news that in most cases, the student had since deleted their Twitter account.
A deliberate effort seems to have been made to make sure this information shows up in a google search of these kids' names, for years to come.
Calling the president terrible names is a crime that should haunt people- even rash children- for the rest of their lives? Okay. You're about ten years too late, but okay, I'm game.
Did Jezebel do similar legwork to 'out' the people threatening to riot if Obama lost the election? Physical threats seem a bit more dire than name-calling, no?
How about the Bush-haters on Twitter and elsewhere? Certainly we know that many, many vicious thoughts were uttered about Dubya- including assassination fantasies. No Jezebel expose on that? Curious.
More to the point: have right-wing sites ever persecuted young kids who tweeted mean things about George Bush, John McCain, or Mitt Romney? No. They have not.
Not yet.
Is this really the kind of investigative journalism Jezebel wants to encourage, or become famous for? Where kids are subject to being haunted for the rest of their lives by the stupid things they did and said while in their formative years?
We need to stop pussyfooting around, and establish definitely that punishing children for ThoughtCrime is now an acceptable function of the political operatives who pretend to be journalists.
Because, we can go there. If they want to go there, we can do that too.
We are not required to behave honorably to opponents who are so bugfucking cuckoo for a politician now, that they can't hold their fire from young kids.
I hate to point this out, but: leftists have kids who misbehave and act stupidly in public, too.
This is the world you live in, kids. Everything you say in public — and even private — forums on the Internet has the potential to go more public and to become a permanent part of your Google footprint. Stupid, offhand remarks at 16 may mean you don’t get a job at 26.
Noted.
Tipster Spongeworthy:
Did those rags at Gawker really contact the schools these dumbass kids attend? They should be shunned for this—it isn’t Gawker’s job to rat these kids out. That isn’t journalism or even advocacy.
Yeah, I'm over the whole 'journalism' aspect. There is no such thing, and the sooner we embrace this new reality of ruthless Total Political War, the better.
Let's get on to the whole 'sauce for the gander' chapter of this saga, because that's where the action is now, frankly.

Hey, Howie, are you going to book a guest to talk about the despicable manic race-baiting against Romney before the election with comments such as "Yo, if Romney wins I'm gonna take that honky out" and other generally violent, hateful and grammatically challenged statements?
What's that? That's not newsworthy but the Jezebel drivel is?
Coen has the unmitigated gall to appoint herself judge, jury, executioner and parental guardian, notifying the schools of the teenagers' whose comments she found so offensive?
They're not of legal age and yet she takes it upon herself to correct the kids, and the schools? Does she have credentials in childhood development, child psychology, or even in education? I didn't think so.
And somehow you think it's ok that she "snitches" on teens because she's offended by what is still, like it or hate it, free speech?
What is she, the comment police? Wonder if she took exception with adult comments and contacted their employers, their spouses, their friends, their families.
What a stunningly biased, arrogant and irrelevant segment. It's one of the reasons I've stopped tuning into your show.

No decent person on the right would orchestrate a similar public effort to ruin the life of a minor, because it's reprehensible. It's one of the reasons we're at a disadvantage in the battle for our country. There are lines we won't cross, but the other side has no boundaries.

Other than the high profile cases that make Drudge, there must have been dozens/hundreds of other people who got fired because of indiscreet FB postings.
At some point, some of them are going to sue FB using the theory that FB encouraged this sort of behavior and does nothing to prevent it...a sort of 3rd party entrapment argument. Its bullshit, but its going to happen, and FB will lose in court because the jury will see their big pockets and sympathize with the dolts who want to GET PAID for being imbeciles.

You folks have played 'sauce for the gander' for awhile, now.
iow, you're reacting to their moves, instead of acting on your own initiative.
Losing the initiative in a fight is when you're dancing to the other guy's tune. They push your buttons and you yell. They manipulate the strings ...and... you're a puppet in someone else's play.

You're all mixed up here. The Constitution has nothing to do with her being fired, and everything to do with the idea of her being prosecuted. Yet you seem uneasy with the former, and considering advocating the latter.
The law can't reasonably touch her. But her employer could and did, and I think that's something to celebrate. She earned it.
Besides, I'm sick of people imagining that the obvious meaning of their actions doesn't apply because they say so. This woman says that her actions represent no disrespect to the honored dead. Some guy who painted a picture of Obama as a crucified figure says he wasn't making any analogy between Obama and Jesus. Do they imagine that everyone has lost 80 IQ points somehow? I know, I know, the last election...

If Obama's younger years were as well documented as goes on today, he'd not be president now. He'd have a hard time getting a Walmart greeter job because he couldn't pass the drug test.

Like the douche yesterday who got into an argument with a 16 year old. There's no need to debate these assholes we just do what they do, skip the debate and head straight to targeting their defense.
Don't start debating their impartiality, state that even pretending to be impartial is absurd. Then they look absurd when they start defending themselves.
Start mocking them for being lap dogs for the last 4 years and the next.
Mock them for having to put their professional ethics on hold in the name of covering for their lord and saviour. Point out to them that they have a constant diet of shit sandwiches because Obama is the turd they have to go out and polish day in and day out.
These are the types of memes that need to be echoed everywhere, especially outside of the right wing haunts. Don't debate whether X is true, comment like it is an established fact and their defence of such a fact is both ridiculous and desperate. The right never lowers itself to such tactics, but it works.
The left has done this for years, global warming, alleged left wing academia intellectual superiority, the right wing wants to throw grandma and poor people on the street.
We saw it only the other day on how the right was racist for criticizing Rice. It wasn't a discussion on whether the criticism was justified we leapt over that straight to putting conservatives on the defense by saying it was outright racism.
The right are too interested in actually, you know, thinking about things and not appearing too headstrong in our convictions. The left loves to jump in with both feet and whip itself into a feeding frenzy of hateful convictions no matter how ridiculous. Just look at the opposition to Bush and the crazy it brought out there.
These are the moments of opportunity wasted by the right. There is hay to be made from this, how the liberals are creating this hostile totalitarian environment, acting against free speech, make them fear for their comments on social media. Make use of their contrarian nature. They can longer fight against the man when they are the man.

That...and we don't have 3 major networks, CNN and MSNBC manipulating and defaming our opposition. Or praising our candidates every move. If they do an about face, and told the truth, or at least observed the news objectively instead of practicing yellow journalism, then we'd most likely when >>50% of elections nationwide including blue states. All your blue states would start bleeding red....where would you be then? Move to Cuba, or North Korea where socialism is already fully incorporated? Or would you move to the more moderate socialism of Spain or Greece?

Maintaining morality against an immoral enemy is suicidal.
I know, all the arguments about "becoming them, blah, blah.." -- THEY ALL BULLSHIT. This is a gutter fight. straight razors, busted bottles, rusty pipes.
The difference, which is why we don't "become them" by acting like them is that we can turn it off when the battle is over. They can't. It is who they are. It is how they operate. Every time. All the time. 7x24x365.
That difference matters.

Here we are with double standards being a beautiful thing: defend the right to idiocy of the stupid 18-yo kids who called the prez "n*gger", but call for criminal prosecution of some similarly stupid fat chick who was mocking the content of a sign that just happened to be at Arlington?
It's one thing for her -- and the kids -- to lose social face for such shameless, wilful immaturities. It's another altogether for Jezebel or the entire conservative blogosphere to coordinate large-scale, bloodthirsty campaigns gleefully demanding life-impacting consequences for such moronic -- and utterly harmless! -- act.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is not anyone's god.
It is a tomb to honor those who have been shot, stabbed, blown up, mutilated, disparaged, and by half the populace, forgotten, so that we might live free and happy.
The woman you referenced, whose name I have forgotten, deserves nothing but scorn for mocking those who fought and died, and probably wished they were at home, rather than bleeding out in a foreign land. A teenager slandering the President is not at all in the same category.
For starters, the President hasn't suffered for anyone. For another thing, he's a damn politician. That means that he lies, cheats, and extorts his way through life. It is the same with all politicians.
Denigrating a career politician is not at all equal to denigrating a young man who died, forgotten and alone, on a battlefield in the name of the people of the United States, or for that matter, an unknown tens of thousands of young men, not simply one.
So to you, sir/madam, in reply to your unbelievably loose morals, third-rate debate technique, and unsound reasoning, I have nothing but a colossal go straight to hell.

I agree, the dumb chick that insulted all service men that ever served or died to defend the nation has a right to free speech and I never called for her prosection. I lurk quite a bit here and have not seen posts calling for that...perhaps I just scrolled to quickly on those threads.
But what I do believe in, is the right of her employer to fire her over such an act, in particular because she did it during a company outing.
I agree, what the kids have done is despicable as well....but ruining their lives for it? Is that called for? I'm not sure, making them understand what they did is wrong? Yes. I would have just outed them without revealing their names and caused the opposition party the embarassment it deserved for such an action....but they are going overboard ruining kids lives. over age 18, i guess their fair game for being outed and losing their jobs...if they have one in this economy.

The Left is becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of "destroying" anyone who ventures into un-Left speech or thought. I can't imagine what could restrain them from anything short of judicial murder, and even that's just a question of degree and "special corps" who'd handle it. Paint them a world where the entire family of a 16-year old kid has its house and possessions seized, the parents are barred from working, and they're left to squat under a tin lean-to in a shantytown of similar rejects. Would it make them recoil in horror? Would they exclaim "I don't want to live in a world like that!" You know it wouldn't. They'd be HAPPY. Happy to think that their enemies have been crushed and may even die of starvation - good riddance, and smoother, neater world for them.
Well, they worried themselves sick that every bullet fired by an American soldier would raise up a hostile jihadi, looking for vengeance. Every injustice like this will end up raising a soldier for a fascist backlash which will repay them in kind.

I think the left should be hounded to the gatesof Hell for every feebish comment they've made. If they want to play with fire lets pour some gas on them, they lit the match.
15The nasty shit the left says on a daily basis about conservatives is pretty damned hair-raising.
Example: Mike Malloy (and I used to know the fuckwit in ATL). He's as nasty and evil in person as you'd expect. Sadly, he's the father of a son.
Posted by: Jane D'oh
That's funny, I knew Malloy back in the early to mid 90's when he had the evening show. Even went to one of the big get togethers and got signed pictures of all the on air personalities, including Munson's that I treasure even as a Gator fan.
It is true that Malloy has turned into a Jade Gold of the radio, dispicable miserable shell of a former human.

I think Jimi is more right than some of you think.
I don't really see a significant difference in the teenager versus the 30 year old as SOME commenters on this site would be getting just as riled up if the teenager had done what she did, male or female.
You'd be wanting the colleges to refuse admittance, you'd be privately hoping they spend the rest of their lives in misery because you feel it would somehow make reparation for what they did.
Jimi is arguing there is a difference between someone being subject to consequences for their words and actions, and someone being piled on with many consequences and life long ridicule to the point where they might wish they were dead because it makes some folks think that the problem got fixed.
It's like some people on the internet hoping Sandusky gets sodomized in prison for committing rape. It may make you feel better, but it isn't justice, and it certainly doesn't repair the lives of the victims.
We should always hold people accountable for their actions in comparison with the gravity of them, but we shouldn't actively wish evil on them.

Social media needs a rethink. Despite it's alleged security/sharing advantages over Facebook, Google+ proved to be really unfriendly to not being associated with my URL or other Google presences including the ones which I use for work. Where I work for law firms, that's a fatal fail. Even the long-term clients I have that know me personally don't necessarily want my political views to be easily connected to their firms. I confess to being a social media novice in many ways, but it seems to me that the entire thrust of Facebook, Google+ and their progeny is to force you to have a less-than-anonymous internet identity which their advertisers can whore to, and your privacy can go fuck itself. Until they make me feel otherwise right down to my loins, they can kiss me right down to my loins.
