— Gabriel Malor Today the House will vote on two bills designed to avert both components of the fiscal cliff. It's a smart play by Speaker Boehner and his caucus to pass this legislation and then head home for the holidays as it looks increasingly likely that President Obama has no intention of negotiating.
The first bill, the Spending Reduction Act of 2012 (PDF: H.R. 6684), replaces the automatic sequestration cuts with alternative spending cuts and reforms, mainly to avoid the nasty defense cuts in the original sequester. It also cuts the Obamacare slush fund, the failed HAMP mortgage reform effort, and reforms food stamps and the child refundable tax credit. The bill reduces the deficit by an additional $242 billion over the original sequester.
The second bill, the Permanent Tax Relief for Families and Small Businesses Act of 2012 (PDF: H.J. Res. 66), is what we've been calling 'Plan B.' It permanently extends current tax rates for everyone making less than $1 million, so no more of having to re-fight the same battles over and over every time the tax rates expire. It has a permanent AMT fix, which conservative have been seeking since time out of mind. The Joint Committee on Taxation says that Plan B amounts to about a $3.9 trillion tax cut.
The House GOP should pass these bills and go home. We're not going to get anything from President Obama, despite a good-faith effort to avert economic disaster. Let him own a decision to raise taxes on 99.81% of Americans.

Hopefully this will work out like one of Hannibal's "A-Team" plans, and NOT like one of Baldrick's cunning plans of "Blackadder" fame.
Sometimes, the DOPEs on Capitol Hill remind me so strongly of Baldrick that I have to clean my ears out with soap to be sure they aren't talking with British accents.

If passed, will Obama sign because he's a coward, or veto because he's a coward? The easiest predictor of his behavior is "What Would A Coward Do?" Which is the most cowardly course of action? Whoops, cowardice is the overwhelming factor when action must be taken, like defending a consulate.
Perhaps in this case he'll decide based on what's in it for him. Political hay, graft, or the continued destruction of freedom and the free market?

Okay, I know this is OT, but since the thread is moving pretty slow (almost half an hour and only 21 comments!?), I'll toss it out there.
Quentin Tarantino is being an ass. Again.
At the Hollywood Reporter, via Drudge:
Quentin Tarantino Says Drug War, Justice System are Modern Day Slavery
LINK : http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/quentin-tarantino-says-drug-war-404895
..."This whole thing of this 'war on drugs' and the mass incarcerations that have happened pretty much for the last 40 years has just decimated the black male population," the filmmaker said on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. "ItÂ’s slavery, it is just, itÂ’s just slavery through and through, and itÂ’s just the same fear of the black male that existed back in the 1800s."
In addition, he says that the flesh-for-cash business of slavery mirrors that of the prison industrial complex.
"Especially having even directed a movie about slavery," he said, "and you know the scenes that we have in the slave town, the slave auction town, where theyÂ’re moving back and forth -- well, that looks like standing in the top tier of a prison system and watching the things go down. And between the private prisons and the public prisons, the way prisoners are traded back and forth."...
I just... I can't even... Flames. Flames... on the side of my face. Breathing... breath... HEAVING breaths...
I'm especially taken by his whimsical view that, having directed a movie about slavery, he somehow knows jackshit about what slavery was like. Especially when he's talking about the "scenes that we have in the slave town," and how similar they are to modern prisons. Hey, Quentin! How much of that is realism based on fact, and how much of it was your set designers -- and yourself -- making it SEEM like that? Because Quentin, you ain't exactly known for your REALISM, dick swat.

I'm not saying we don't have a lot to complain about but in order to prevail in a political battle, you have to occasionally support your own side when they appear to do our bidding. If you are cynical 24/7 with your own party you are doing nothing but lending support to the otherside.
If you are truly independent and share you cynicism equally then that does not apply. But being 'independent' has always been a cop out to me.

I agree, Plan B is--unattractive--but the best we can do right now. It does give us something tangible to point to when the burning starts next year to say that the Republicans did pass a serious piece of legislature to address the fiscal cliff, but that Obama and Reid would rather have a temper tantrum and take us all down rather than yeild an inch on soaking the American public.
Of course, we already know this, but maybe we can bludgeon enough low information voters wih this to open their eyes to the fact that the Democrats are not actually helping them.

So, after four years of Obama being able to blame his incompetence in economic policy on Bush, now we're giving him the opportunity to blame the next four years on House Republicans.

That being said, if I were in congress I wouldn't vote for plan B. I'd rather hike taxes on everybody then play this class warfare bullshit. Sure, that will crush the economy, but it's already going to suck due to all of Obama's other policies.

I agree but as a former congressional staffer, the House still has to remain in formal session until adjournment sine die unless the sine die resolution allows the leadership to reconvene.
Mind you, they don't have to do anything but eventually vote to adjourn sine die. But the session still requires consent of the Senate. Was nearly stuck in Washington for Christmas due to a lame duck session that ended on Dec. 16th. House and Senate did not agree on continuing resolution and Senate refused to let the House adjourn with a clean bill. CRS has interesting monograph on lame duck Congresses since the 20th Amendment at http://tinyurl.com/coqmccn Apparently, in 2008, the House did adjourn sine die before the election but the Senate did not. Thus, a lame duck session began Nov. 19th until Jan 3rd 2009 when adjournment occurred.
For a boring (for most) discussion of President's power to adjourn (to make recess appointments) see this discussion at Volokh http://tinyurl.com/cc5c68c
Re other commenters: the Senate is in recess to watch Lincoln, not adjourn. Media makes this mistake a lot.

Depression gets MORE Democrats elected and the vicious circle arond the drain of economic misery, and people demanding more Government to protect them from that misery, continues.
That's what we miss... Democrats thrive on economic pain and misery.
