As the returns began pouring in, my volunteers engaged in the thankless task of racking up the numbers. I had some delay at first in getting them in, as it was a busy night, and started to watch the numbers coming from Ohio, Florida, and Virginia.
To say I was upset was a tremendous understatement. Frankly, I lost the will to keep reporting once it was painfully obvious Obama had won Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Colorado. I held off for a bit, then hit the edit feature to put in "Obama wins", and after my network connection crashed, called it a frustrated night. I will update the site stats from my volunteers gathered info. Kudos as well to them, who are still humming along in a Decision Desk email chain with suggestions and reflections on the race and campaigns. We will do this again for '14, hopefully with happier news.
I want to thank all of them for continuing to report, as tough as it was.
I have some thoughts on how polling and data-mining can be used by the GOP, the lessons not learned from the incredibly successful fight against the recall in Wisconsin, and I'll throw them together for a post in the next week or so.
If I had known Team Romney wasn't replicating that June effort from the Badger state, I would have called this race months ago. I had perhaps blind faith that their team knew what it was doing, that it had learned from Obama's GOTV efforts and was ready to match them. As we are learning about ORCA, that was horribly wrong. From now on, the polling reigns supreme. Right in 2008, right in 2012, right in the Recall. Goodbye "unskewed" silliness.
Since polling has all but evaporated post election, I think I'm going to enjoy some stargazing. Dinner with the wife. Definitely going to take time to enjoy some art for a while. Something that will take some of the sting out of Tuesday. Something less discomforting and awkward than the massive fuck-up that was the Romney campaign. So look forward to my next art thread: Mapplethorpe's X Portfolio at LACMA.

I've said that the loss was multifactorial. Some big factors (vote fraud, idiotic 20something white girls). Some small factors.
One small factor appears to have been the "relax, we've got this" attitude from certain sectors on the right. And revoiced on (cough) certain popular conservative blogs which posted starry-eyed Romney landslide forecasts.
Many people assumed it was axiomatic that a President couldn't get re-elected with such an incredibly awful economic record. Guess what? This one did! After those same people couldn't be arsed to go vote.

It's still quite possible that they were being skewed towards Obama and it was causing enough people to say, "Eh, guess there's no reason to go vote."
The problem is, we only explain that to people that frequent conservative blogs... people that are going to vote anyways, no matter what. Most other right-leaning people just see the polls with no analysis.
What we really need to do is start reaching out to non-political right-leaners RIGHT NOW. Get them on board and keep them as informed as you can without overloading them. That's just my opinion, anyhow.

But the day-of operation was a disgrace. There were voters all over Ohio who could have been reached and were not because it was assumed by the team that money didn't need to be wasted to reach them. "They'll turnout on their own." Didn't happen, and we lost in all of the key states because of this.
WE DIDN'T LOSE OHIO "BECAUSE HISPANICS!" They don't exist there. We lost because white voters who would have gone for Romney weren't motivated to go to the polls, poisoned by Obama's cynical ad smear all year. Romney didn't reach them, and a good ground game could have reached them and convinced them to vote begrudgingly.
Next time spend half the money you spent on ads (that by mid-October no one was paying attention to because of the overload) and pour it into GOTV in the key states.

Mitt was a helluva good candidate. Almost great, in fact. Had he been running against anything but President Historic First©, the god-like affirmative action candidate, I believe he would have won by 15 points.
If we can't overcome the propaganda advantage the MFM gave the Dems, I hope that we will learn to train and dispatch people versed in the way of voter fraud to watch the friggin' enemy like a hawk.
More than any failings of candidate, GOTV efforts or "messaging," we were done in by fraud. If our "leaders" and "pundits" refuse to face up to that (as I am 95% certain they will), we are destined to lose again and again, no matter who we run.

Until the Repubs can bring home how their policies affect at the individual level.... they will not win.
Dems give stuff to individuals and small groups... Repubs say, look at the big picture..... but more people will VOTE on their own personal circumstances...
Case in point, friend of mine is a ONE ISSUE voter, because his wife is ill... even when I pointed out that he wants to use Government Power to force MY KIDS to pay his wifes Medical Bills.... he couldn't see the problem... (rethinking this friendship by the way).

Alf Landon, 1936, "ex"-progressive pro-New Deal Republican governor form a state America doesn't know much about, up against a cultically worshiped fascist-Emperor-president, in the middle of a depression. There was *one* precedent for this election, and it was followed.
(I did tell you so. I'm aware that it doesn't matter that I did. But I did, and I didn't see anybody else do it.)
Notably for the GOP future, maybe, '36 was the election that locked the black vote against Republicans (it's *against Republicans*, not for Democrats) forever—for no obvious reason. 2012 will probably have done the same with Asians, likewise for no obvious, first-order, Romney-was-going-to-fuck-up-the-Asians reason.
I mean, in theory conservatives are anti-Affirmative Action, and AA fucks Asians worse than anybody. So the conservative™ GOP is "objectively pro-Asian"...in theory.
But the reality of something else outweighs that hypothetical "pro-." Is it anyone's job in the GOP to figure out *what* that is? And do something about it? Or counter it? Maybe with some "pro-?" Some "pro-" that would also invigorate the party's shrinking Loser base?
I'm sure somebody's on it.

You keep trying to put an easy fix on something that is much more dire. Obama wasn't a good candidate he was a terrible candidate. One that failed miserably for 3.75 solid years in office. Mittens wasn't a terrible candidate he was an OK candidate. We should've won easily even with our flaws. The fact that we didn't should make us examine why not.
The demographics don't support us any longer. Until we shift a lot of thinking in the US we will be beaten repeatedly. The only cure I can think of is a good dose of liberal reality for the US.

That's not what the exit polling showed.
The exit polling showed that people still blame Bush for the economy; they thought Romney would bring back Bush's polices; they thought Obama needed more time to fix the economy; they thought Obama cared more about them than Romney; and a plurality said Obama's handling of Hurricane Sandy was a big factor.
The mistakes Romney made were in not fighting back on the "vulture capitalist" meme. He couldn't have done anything about Sandy. (Thanks, Chris Christie! Love ya! Mean it!)
Romney and Ryan fought back on Medicare and defeated it as an effective attack. They then concentrated on positive, Reaganesque "morning in America" themes that everyone liked. They just didn't trust Romney to deliver on his promises because Obama had effectively tarred him as favoring "the rich."
Romney beat Obama in "ability to manage the economy." But people thought he'd do it by taxing the middle class and favoring the rich. So they stayed with Obama.
There was no great demographic swing. Obama just did what he said he'd do and killed Romney.

The problem is that gay activists have operated in bad faith in the past, by moving goal posts, and they will continue to do so. The problem is that the next step beyond "gays will marry" is "we'll force gays to marry in your church", which is the real problem.
Granted, if you're Catholic, you're about to go underground over a separate issue *anyway* ...

Re ORCA, if I had known how bad the groundgame was, I would have done more outside my red district. I really thought a guy with Mitt's creds would have the groundgame and ORCA, tested, retested, and tweaked.
What a bitter disappointment. This does reinforce my belief that the e-voting machines were biased and that electronic voting is not anywhere perfected until we have a paper trail to compare to the machine tallies.

We have to stay hard on Congress, and look to take the Senate in 2 years. Start Monday. This is a week of getting fiscal house in order, stocking up and buying all the stocks we know are in o's hip pocket. Then have enough losses to offset the taxes that will not change until we change the Senate.
Until then, hunker down, recommit, and give as little as possible to the gubmint and to o voters. Let the impact hit them first.

The government isn't forcing anyone to be immoral (from your perspective), they simply aren't PUNISHING them. You don't need to spend your life trying to get the Gov't to pushing sinners.
(The govt is asking religious folks and THEIR shuls, churches to provide the servicers funds ,and comply on abortion)
Preach forgiveness. Feed the poor. And leaves Ceasar's stuff in politics, and God's stuff at church.
(agree)
You don't really need to keep the gay's from marrying to save America. You just don't.
(Could care less, just don't demand a church have to comply) why doesn't religion have rights in this?)
But racking up huge debts? That's an actual political problem, and worth your time and effort and votes.

I think the biggest mistake though would be to believe the Republican Party doesn't need a reboot. The fact remains, there's a significant gender gap and we get slaughtered in states with demographics and incomes we should be doing well with. Why on Earth, for example, have college educated, white collar professionals abandoned the GOP? We can't expect a governing majority from disaffected coal miners.
Political parties change all the time, Democrats used to be a party of working class whites that opposed integration.
Conservatives need to stop with this nonsense about going back to the "Reagan Model". The nation has changed since 1980. Drastically. Hell, Joe Biden was elected as a strident, pro-life Senator from Delaware. which just goes to show you how meaningless and abstract those labels are.
The nation was going through a religious revival of sorts and both parties tipped their hat to it. One of Reagan's biggest pushes for the Supreme Court was for prayer to be back in public schools. Again, the nation has changed.
My advice is Mitch Daniels was right, let's have a truce on the Culture War (especially since we lost it) and start offering solutions that can address the problems we can solve.
If we fall back to the "we need better GOTV software" we're going to keep losing elections because we're not winning new hearts and minds.

The power of the unchecked liberal media to pick and choose what the general populace needs to know (Obama/Christie/Sandy) and when they need to know it (Iran firing on US UAV) scares the heck out of me. I am afraid the FSA (Free Stuff Army) will never listen to an alternative uncool conservative media (Rush has a big audience but he mostly confirms what they already think/know).
I also fear that if disaster strikes (as it most assuredly will) during the king's second term they recalcitrant Republicans will be blamed no matter if the only fingerprints at the scene belong to Obama, because of his more than willing accomplices in the media.
We need to retrench (but probably won't). Some points to consider:
1. The candidate should be as squeaky clean as Romney because if there is a particle of scandal (even a parking ticket) it will be used against the R candidate.
2. Smear campaigns should be answered with equally dirty but factual responses.
3. Every R candidate for any office at any level down to town dog-catcher should be schooled on a defusing answer on the abortion question (and many excellent ones were proposed here at AoS).
4. See 3. above for foreign adventures (war/military force, etc.). The only rational position here is that, absent a formal Declaration of War by Congress (House and Senate), US troops will NOT be deployed overseas in a combat scenario.
5. R's should have electrodes implanted in their skulls, if necessary, to constantly remind them that the press is their enemy 24/7/365.

I did have to tell some guy that he could not wear his Obama shirt in the polling area because it was considered electionering, within 100 feet. His mother got a little mad and said " Your going to make us go home and not vote?" I told her no, just go to the bathroom and turn it inside out. They came back into the polling area and I thanked them. They wouldnt even look at me. Oh, well - I would have done it if someone showed up with a Roseanne Barr shirt too. Yes, or a Mitt shirt. It was a real great turn out. My precinct had over 900 ballots. I live in the CA high desert area. We closed the polls at 8pm, tallied up all the different types of ballots. write ins regular ballots vote by mail drop offs and the provisional ballots. Sealed them in boxes or envelopes as directed by the Registrar-Recorder Office. Drove the ballots to the local drop off point ( 20 mins away), waited on line for about 1/2 hour to turn them in. On the way home, heard that Obama won. The votes that we were dropping off and everyone else's in this county, had not even made it to the heliport yet to be brought to LA to be counted. I got home at 10:30 & they were already tearing down the stage that Obama gave his speech on and sweeping up the confetti. They could have waited until the votes were counted, just to make it look like any of it really mattered.

No I agree there was no huge swing, it just continued the direction it had been swinging for a long time.
There was nothing so fundamentally wrong with Romney's campaign that it shouldn't have been able to unseat a President with 7.9% unemployment, a dead ambassador, an unpopular modification to US healthcare, persistently stagnant economic growth, who shutdown a major pipeline project while gas in the US was selling for $3.50-4.00 a gallon.
If you don't get out of denial and accept that a serious problem beyond quick "We messaged wrong" fixes we are in serious trouble. You are cocooning convincing yourself the results are not as bad as what they were.

The same demographics that reelected Obama strengthened the GOP majority in the House.
There's only one possible conclusion from this and the exit polling: People didn't trust Romney, and they didn't trust him because the Democrats demonized him.
They also demonized the House GOP, but it failed. Why?
The only possible answer is that Team Romney didn't effectively fight the "vulture capitalist" meme, while House Republicans were somehow able to convince the voters to increase their numbers.
Romney didn't try to overcome the "vulture capitalist" meme. He's so personally accomplished that he doesn't realize how simple-minded most people are.
He tried to persuade them with a grand vision that they liked. They just didn't trust him to implement it.

Who did the average voter think was a guy more like them? Who did the average voter think cared more about the middle class?
Romney ran a terrible campaign. I thought, up until the end, that it was at least better then McCain, but on further reflection it wasn't.
Romney didn't define himself or his opponent. He gave no powerful reason to vote for him. He gave no reason to vote against his opponent. He made mistake after mistake. And this is on top of his life's record most definitely being a negative coming into the thing.
All this was clear back in 2011 too. But people had to vote for "Mr Electable". Who mind you has only even won one election in his life.

The fundamental flaw in Romney's campaign was that he didn't fight back against the attacks on him.
The same people who defeated him also strengthened the GOP majority in the House. People rejected Romney, not the Republican party. That means Republicans can keep winning if they have candidates who run better campaigns.
Romney was a good candidate but a flawed campaigner. He didn't fight back, and it cost him the election.
The German Me-263 jet fighter was a great aircraft, but Hitler insisted on using it as a bomber, which rendered its superiority meaningless.
The exit polling proves it. The exit polling shows that people support Republican ideas more than Democratic ideas. But they chose Obama instead of Romney because they didn't trust Romney.
It's as simple as that.

My husband said "So who didn't vote? Did some Palin fans stay home? What?"
[He's a big Palin fan, btw...and wishes that she'd endorsed Romney.]
I was too gobsmacked to be making any intelligible noises...so all I could do was shake my head in wonderment, that any R-voters stayed home this time.

So now we've heard from one.

I am a SoCon at heart, but there is no perfect solution to the abortion issue because it involves imperfect people and their understanding of morality. I think there are three imperfect sub-issues that might advance the cause somewhat:
1. Q: Rape and incest--A: Consider it to be settled law that abortion is allowed.
2.Q: Birth control--A: Consider it to be settled medical practice that it will remain available as it is now.
3.Q: Birth control coverage and abortion by insurance--A: It should be available but with co-pay so you pay for your own circumstances.
4.Q: Late term abortion/post birth abortion--A: It cannot be condoned by a civilized society.

No. You just adapt. You adapt your method of trying to reach people. You accept reality and adapt to it.
The GOP has had a long, long time to think about this. The younger GOP pols get it, but the older party bigwigs in control are still fighting the last wars, the way the older French generals in World War I dressed their men in red pants and caps and sent them charging against emplaced machine guns.
"Spirit and the bayonet will always win!" the older French generals said, and their men were mowed down by the millions.
But by the end of the war, the French had adapted. They had hunter-killler squads armed with hand grenades, rifle grenades, and light machine guns to take out German machine-gun nests; they had flamethrower squads; they had assault platoons consisting of light machine gunners, hand-grenade throwers, rifle grenadiers, and riflemen.
The GOP must adapt. It can't deny reality. We're not fucked if we just adapt.

You are painting with a broad brush.... Yes... some Libertarians are overboard... just like some Dems, and some Repubs...
You can make a philisophicaly moral framework without religion, and based on the idea that YOUR Freedom is fine, right up until it infringes on MY Freedom.
Heck, on abortion? I am an anti abortion Libertarian, because Life begins at conception, and the Mother taking that life infringes upon the Freedom of THAT person.
There are also Strong Defense Libertarians... like myself, who take that idea to the International Level.... No, we don't want huge LONGTERM forward deployments (hell, we're still defending GERMANY?)... but we do want a very strong Military available to smack anyone who attacks us up side the head (and yes, this could be done, as in Desert Storm)...
There are Moderate Libertarians out there.... but the term is now tainted by those with extreme views... and some Repubs are now cursing US for the failure of THEIR Campaigns.

A rather important point.
Protestant Christianity birthed a free society. By throwing away the former we will remove the latter.
That doesn't mean a theocracy anymore then MA or VA in 1776 were a theocracy. But it does mean that marginalizing religion is a bad, bad idea.
Consider, for example, was the highly Christian Britain of the 1880s more or less libertarian then modern atheist Britain? And as modern Britain sheds ever more of its social traditions, will it become more or less libertarian?

Actually, the French are total badasses. Their problem in World War II was again their sclerotic leadership.
French tanks in 1940 lacked radios! The commanders had to come out of the hatch and communicate with semaphore flags. So all the tank commanders immediately died, and the Germans--with their radio-equipped tanks--won.
The French army supreme headquarters was run by men who hated telephones, so the building had none. All messages in 1940 were relayed by courier.
The French are kicking ass in Afghanistan, and the French Foreign Legion is one of the best special-operations units in the world.
Republican "ground troops" are like the French foreign legion and the GIGN, but our leaders are the guys who resist putting radios in tanks and telephones in the headquarters.

All I can say is that the research is there. Every time a woman bears a son the chance increases by about 1/3rd. If twins are involved later in the birth cycle the percentage goes off the chart for the one with a propensity toward left handedness.
I personally don't understand a propensity toward same sex attraction in males. It's nowhere in my genes, yet I can fully understand women being attracted to women. That one is easy.

I don't even know what a rifle grenade is, but I want one![i/]
It's a hand grenade put in a little cup on the end of a rifle or stuck on the end of the barrel and fired, so it's like being able to throw your grenade hundreds of yards.
You put the butt of the rifle on the ground and fire the grenade with a high, curving trajectory, so you can drop it right on the heads of the people shooting at you.
The French perfected the technique in World War I. When you spot the machine-gun nest, you open fire on it with your light machine gun and shower it with rifle grenades from a long distance, thus covering your hand-grenade throwers and riflemen, who crawl forward until they're within range to finish the job at close quarters.

Of that 24%, fully 79% went to Romney. Evangelicals even outperformed MORMONS in voting for Romney percentage wise. They voted in the same numbers as they did for Bush, and outperformed their votes for McCain by 6%. So I don't know where your anger is coming from, but it's not coming from the facts.

The most discouraging thing about this defeat is the multitude of wrong lessons Republicans are taking from it. That makes me worried that the next presidential nominee will make fatal mistakes, too.
All you need to do is look at who voted and why.
People voted overwhelmingly on the economy and on women's rights. Romney failed to adequately address the false attacks that he would not be good for the economy and women's rights.
He and Ryan brilliantly addressed Mediscaring, but they underestimated the power the Democrats had to demonize Romney as a "vulture capitalist" who would oppress women's rights.
The electorate rejected Romney the man, not the ideals he represented.

I do think so, yes.
I guess my point was, people say they want SoCons to stop talking about abortion, but from my observation it is the media that keeps forcing the topic. However, only from one side. Their side is never asked to defend their extreme and unpopular positions such as partial birth abortion or even infanticide. It is only SoCons who must defend their positions, and demonized for them.

And Vietnam. They lost, but it wasn't for lack of trying.
They're about to invade Mali to kick Islamist and Tuareg ass. I'm betting they do a fine job.

Yes, they do. With cameras running the entire time, so they can record it, then upload it to YouTube, then selectively edit the clip and run it 24 hours a day 7 days a week in the final week of the campaign in swing states. While something like well over 50% of the population is opposed to abortion when asked, it still becomes an issue which decides election.
So I submit to you as ec ---- from lfg, who you may remember, who is lying?

EC - You've known me a long long time, and this is the end of a dead thread, so I'm going to be honest here and tell you what I texted Little Winger yesterday. "Our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers and principalities of the forces of darkness, of wickedness at the highest levels"
We live in a crooked and perverse generation, and the Father of Lies has deluded a great many people, and blinded them to truth . Who is lying? The great Liar. But not forever, and not for long.

Can anyone with a straight face really say if we get enough Santorum- type Republicans nominated we're going to successfully criminalize abortion?
At best, you'll get it to the state level, in which case all 50 states will have some form of abortion legal.
And even if you could somehow magically accomplish putting this into law over the objections of a huge majority of voters and make an unconstitutional federal law, actually stopping abortion would be about as successful as the War on Drugs.
I don't like losing elections over abstract issues while we're heading over a cliff.

Yes, you can and I say this as a Christian.
I would love to have a majority that shared my faith, but that's just not reality. Even the Bible makes the case that the way of the "world" is much wider than the path of Christians. We're destined to be outnumbered by the immoral.
So what to we do? If we can have a country that allows people to be free and prosperous, I can still go about my way with my morals and others can as well.
It's not ideal, but it's better than having to raise my family in some sort of failed state that's engulfed in chaos.

I called abcnbccbs and told them I blocked them and all their affiliates and other network stations like weatherchannel, cnbc, etc. I actually got through and told them I wouldn't invite liars into my home personally, why would I let them in via TV.
Now, finding their primary sponsors and boycotting them.
Make them irrelevant, there are over 60 million of us. We can do this.

The Conservative party in Canada has learned this lesson and learned it well. The socons are welcome in the party but it has been made perfectly clear to them that they will NOT be allowed to hijack it. A private members bill came up in Parliament not long ago that proposed studying the definition of life and when it began. The left immediately spun it as reopening the abortion debate. The Conservatives took the hint and made it clear they would not support the bill, and most of the cabinet voted against it. The bill was resoundingly defeated, and the media STILL scorched one female cabinet minister who voted for it.
Social conservative policies are simply RADIOACTIVE to the electorate at large, ESPECIALLY WOMEN. If Republicans refuse to accept this, they'll never win the presidency again, and perhaps the Senate too.
Take the socons out back and beat them with a shovel until they get it.
