— Dave in Texas Celebrates the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
60 Years I believe, is this anniversary.

I wonder if this nation could take the Falklands back today?
There was a time when Britain had a pair. I hope they find them again.

I've always had a soft spot for England, maybe because I was an English lit fiend from the time I was about 13, then an English major. I always admired their intellectuals throughout history.
I really hope they get it back.

The only reason they can and will hold the Falklands (if Obama, EU and the UN do not screw them) will be that they have an AF on the island. They do not have any aircraft carriers or long range bombers any more.
The good news is Argentina's military has probably degraded too.
Hopefully we can rent them a Nimitz class carrier and an MEU or two with the helicopter decked ships (LHA?) for a month if Argentina ever tries something.
Or their French EU buddies could send their Aircraft Carrier?

When immigrants move into a another country...form colonies...and demand that their 'culture' be recognized as having the same rights as the existing culture of their new Host Country......then that is not immigration. ....That is an invasion.

Concepts don't destroy nations. People destroy nations.
Political-correctness was forced upon Britain from "the international community"; and that basically means Harvard, plus the Department of State and the New York media.
Consider Enoch Powell. He was a slightly-nuttier and slightly-more-Celtic (I may be repeating myself) version of John Derbyshire. From one poll I saw he also had the approval of 80% of the English. Suppose he had become Prime Minister with 80% of the Commons behind him. What would the Americans have done? Oh noez, the fascism! Oh noez, the unilateralism! It would be Suez all over again - or Rhodesia, or South Africa (to name two countries demonstrably screwed by the American Liberal). Embargoes, demonstrations, terrorist acts - anything, anything to stop that ever-descending Night of Fascism.
The political class of Britain did all it could to stop Enoch Powell from getting anywhere. They did that because they knew they had no choice. They did that because of America.

One of the things that is contradictory about the lib-socialists....is that they trumpet the virtues of 'population control' on the one hand...then, are in favor of 'open borders' and increasing immigrant numbers on the other hand.
This is what has happened in Britain. ....The native Brits were sold the propaganda that they shouldn't have big families. ...But then, the social entitlement programs needed the funding from more tax payers....so, oops....we need to get some immigrants in here, quick!
Same bullshit is going on here, in our own country. ....The dirtly little secret behind 'why' so many politicians on both sides are squeamish about cracking down on our immigration problems....is because they think we need all those additional numbers to fund our ever-growing entitlement programs.

PC Harvard, NYC, Dept./State, yes3. But you've overlooked Oxford, Cambridge, British upper crust exclusives, exporting the various (ur-European) Socialist forms into the US, firmly established by Wilson who tossed out the Constitution as outmoded and irrelevant. The FDR rhetoric, "Are you part of the problem or the solution?" made it completely incorrect to not fall in line with his political program, to jump on his bandwagon. He threw those who chose to legally contest his unconstitutional methods into jail. It could easily be argued that Harvard and Princeton mimic Oxford, where they learned the tricks of the empire trade. The "international community" is sourced as much from the City of London as anywhere else, Paris, Berlin, Rome, NYC, then Riyadh, Tokyo and presently Hong Kong, with Mumbai coming up in the world. And don't expect Asian cultures to remain mimics of Hollywood/NYC popular culture as everyone's economies ruin. There will be too much antagonism and blame heaped upon Wall Street. But it will be, as ever, the (US) tax payers who are burdened with the "responsibility" to AGAIN pay the global pirates for their epic thievery, allowing them to "recover" what THEY never lost but already stole.
Political correctness is white-washing dog eat dog, pretending not to notice corruption. Worse, because you're too cowardly/"smart" to face down the guy above you pulling your strings, PC denies reality by blaming the guy with less pull than you have for your own discomforts, or kicking him in the teeth for not appreciating what you've done with the best of intentions, namely: over spend to keep up appearances.

Nigel Lafarage and the UKIP have been mocking the EU in the EU parliament. Too bad it is a toothless organization and all the real decisions are made by the nameless faceless bureaucrats in the EU.
It sort of reminds me if the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, except the head of the EU is a feckless useless idiot with few powers. But do not worry, eventually they will find one that will make Vladimir Ilyich Stalin look like a piker. And he or she will be smart enough to grab all the power whether he is "allowed" to or not. And the toothless EU bureaucrats will all fall in line or fall down at the wall after they have been shot.
And the fascism that is always about to fall on the US will fall on Europe. And the peasants will celebrate.

Sorry to go OT so early but has anyone ever rented from U-Haul or Budget or ???
----------------------
I have rented from U-haul. No problems at all. The quality really depends on the local dealer though.
Posted by: Vic at May 19, 2012 04:33 PM (YdQQY)
The quality really depends on the local dealer, the end dealer and the asshole who gets money as a drop off point but is never there. I once told such a drop off point owner over the phone I was going to drop off the trailer and slip the receipt under the door. He screamed, bitched and berated me that if I did that I would have to pay the daily rate until he found another renter. I dropped it off when he wasn't there and that was the end of it.
Another time I rented a moving truck and blew out a tire in a huge washed out pot hole. Walked a quarter mile in a deluge at 9:00 O'clock at night to a pay phone and called for help. Turned out that they wouldn't send out help without a confirmation from a call back (they didn't tell me about it!) On top of that, the diner with the outside pay phone had it set up so that all incoming calls to the pay phone went to the diner, not the pay phone. Since I wasn't in their diner they blew U-Haul calls off. After several walks in the rain and teasing the facts out of the 'tards involved I finally got a truck dispatched to fix my flat.
The guy who finally showed up was drunk and didn't have the proper sized lug wrench. Or a tire on a wheel. He laid his head on his steering's wheel as he sobbed, realizing he was losing his job, and radioed back for another truck.
An hour later the next tow truck came. This time the guy was sober but he insisted I crawled into the huge puddle under the truck to attach the chains to lift the front end. I told him that was his job, so he just put the hook on the front bumper and hauled up the front corner of the truck. As he did the bumper bent and groaned while strands of the wire rope snapped with eerie noises. Watch your eyes!
So it took U-Haul only about five or six hours to fix a flat on a major highway about an hour away from where I rented it.
Fark has an annual thread about U-Haul horrors. Many are worse than mine.

Charles will never be king because he divorced. It will be William. Elizabeth was 19 when she was crowned.

Thanks. ....I was wondering if something had been changed with that 'divorced' thing. ....It wasn't that long ago that Elizabeth's uncle abdicated because of that.
If it hadn't been for the thing about 'divorce'....Elizabeth would have never been Queen. ....But then, if Charles is knocked out of the line for that....the succession falls to Elizabeth's younger sister, doesn't it?
Posted by: wheatie at May 19, 2012 01:41 PM (dHMPi)
As I said, it wasn't just that she was divorced. She was divorced with her husband still alive. Charles's ex-wife is not still alive, therefore it is not an issue.
That kind makes Diana's death kinda convenient don't it.
But don't take my word for it. Check the Monarchy's own website.

Edward VIII wasn't divorced at all, right? Unlike Charles, he hadn't ever even been married. ....But he abdicated because of Wallace Simpson's ex-husband still being alive.

That was the "stated" reason given, but like I said, all the British authorities hated her and considered her a gold digger.
Somehow or another they got "permission" from the church, parliament, and the queen which made it "ok". But a lot of people have openly stated that the marriage IS illegal but the royals have dismissed these claims as the law is "obsolete".
Technically there is nothing in the Act of Settlement that prohibits marrying a divorced person, however there is a problem with the Church of England which the King or Queen is the titular head of.
They gave "permission" for the wedding but the wedding was not held in a church.

And neither were Charles and Camilla. ....They had a civil service and then later received a 'blessing' at St. Georges Chapel.
I didn't know much at all about this, but have been doing a little reading up on it. .....There is a ton of stuff out there, on this subject. ....It seems like the British people are none too keen on having Charles ever take the throne.
As King, he would be the 'head of the Church of England". ....And that wouldn't go down too well for a lot of folks, to have an adulterer and someone who isn't 'officially' married in the church.....be the head of their church.
But it seems like the rules of succession get changed around to suit the circumstances. ....So it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

However the main reason was that everyone in authority hated her.
Some in authority disliked her while others did not. Of those who disliked her, some did so for more personal reasons while others felt that it was a matter of devotion to constitutional principles, duty, honor, and the like. Ultimately, Edward VIII proved himself to be unserious with regards to the aforementioned and he made the choice to abdicate, which was best for all involved.

WIth the stroke of a pen. It's in her powers and it's been exercised (and refused) in Canada and Australia - against the wishes of the respective parliaments.
The general argument is, "Sure, she can ... but if she did everyone would be so ticked that they would make laws barring it ..."
Yeah ... But the fact is:
The Queen has that power. Still.
