A Short History of Rock n' Roll [OregonMuse]
— Open Blogger

12 min. and 14 sec. of stuff that will be forgotten 50 years from now.

Some of the riffs are pretty good, some are, you know, meh.

[Update:] Argh, this was on the ONT. Damn you all. Consider this a double post, and an open thread.

1 Is it old if it was on the ONT?

2 I was solid at recognizing the riffs up to the high 60's, then very sporatic after that. In the 90s I was all GET OFF MY LAWN

3 I'm so old, I think of Yes and The Eagles as some of "The New Bands".

11 I remember something similar to this being used 25 years ago for a TV commercial for a local (Portland) classic rock radio station, KGON ("Portland's home of classic rock"). It was a bit slicker but generally the same concept.

Steve Morse (replacement guitarist for Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple) used to do something like it during concerts in a guitar solo that led into "Smoke On The Water" with its classic riff.

31 He started to lose me somewhere after the halfway point, then it got to be an exercise in "gosh, I've never heard of them and I don't know that song." Lots of the second half had a certain sameness to the riffs. I think that's not because my ears can't hear the difference. I blame the power pop explosion of the late 80s/early 90s.

51 I'm telling you, we're living in a curmudgeon's paradise. Yesterday I was talking with my daughter about this. She's a teenager, so she's an "expert" on modern culture. I said something about how interesting I think it is that whenever we go out in public, if the sound system is playing popular music, it's generally stuff from when I was HER age. I asked, where is the modern stuff? Her response was something to the effect that most of what gets made these days is unfit for public consumption, in that it's vulgar and profane, or it's so unmemorable that nobody recognizes anything that came out 6 months ago. Katie Perry is a prime example. She's a huge star, but her music is a great big fat nothingburger. At least her rival, the Ms. Gaga person, the stuff gets stuck in your head because somebody who knows how to stick it there is responsible for producing it. Most of the popular stuff now is throw-away. 50 years? Not even 50 weeks.

56 54 - It's my eardrums I worry about. I love listening to music, but fear I'm not going to have the capacity to do so forever. In my vehicle, the volume is always up there, not because I'm such a head-banging rocker, but because I want to hear it over the hum of the traffic. My ears can't deal with two things at once anymore.

Matt Damon isn't stupid. He just spent his whole life marinating in bad ideas. He might have been better off having a child molester for a childhood neighbor than Zinn.

I've been told by multiple persons who worked with him that Rutger Hauer is completely, utterly insane. Tends to spout non-sequitors that brings all conversation to a complete halt. So I can believe he improvises well.

105 The credit for Pictures of Matchstick Man should have gone to Status Quo and the riff should have been placed back in the late 60s part of the sequence.

111

Or, properly named, 100 riffs that I've learned to play. After watching that, I never want to see anyone play the guitar again.

112 Yeah, some are meh.  You can tell which ones were written by really serious guitar players.  He has the most trouble with those.  For instance, Eddie Van Halen.

113 Haven't watched any of it. Have a feeling I'd be pretty much done after 79 or so. Some enjoyable stuff came out after that but you can have all that beat your head against the wall stuff from the 80's. Guys trying to be Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, and failing. The Seattle suicide scene sucked too. Nowadays if you want anything good you have to go country. And not the top 40 stuff either.

114 Not impressed.

You'd think out of a hundred they could've found more than one girl group.  Heart was the only one I saw.

And he short-changed the early rockers badly.  You'd think he would have put at least one Elvis in there.

116 If you really want to hear surf rock played right, check out Junior Brown's surf medley.

He also did "My 409" with the beach boys.

126 Should have had "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison.  Along with "Sunshine of Your Love" which someone else mentioned one of the 60s most recognizable riffs.
