21 I remember having the duty on major holidays . No big deal , when in the service , someone is always keeping watch . The mess cooks also really go all out for the holidays . God Bless them especially . They rarely get any credit and just like everyone else they'd love to be home with family . I'd argue that they are as important to morale as chaplains , maybe more so .

24 Oh a good group for SA package questions. I was wondering if laundry supplies would be useful or do they get laundry service on a FOB? In addition to not being much of a baker I always worry about spoilage with sending treats except fudge, which is also fail proof when I just use the choc chips and sweetened canned milk recipe. Any other treats that are really travel hardy and easy to make? I end up sending a lot of fruit snaks, chips, etc -- figure junk food from home is still a bit of home and nostalgia. Thanks in advance, ducking out to feed the horses.

Got an unexpected gift of a tablet computer, HP TouchPad. Figuring it out/syncing it/trying to get it to stop connecting with my neighbor's wi-fi and connect to mine as I type. Presumably it functions as an e-reader, so that's a cool bonus.

67 My mom one time sent a shitty little fake tree to me when I was overseas on my Navy ammo ship somewhere in the Mediterranean. We had it set up for Christmas Eve between all the lockers and racks, but had to take it down the next morning anyway becoz it blocked egress. Fun for the night, though - sitting around it telling stories and swilling bad coffee...

69 My favorite Christmas memory when I was in Germany was when they had the kids of all the guys in the day room to meet "Santa." Our First Sergeant had the right shape to play the part, so he did.

Us single guys pretty much resented that they had commandeered the day room for the little rug rats, so while Santa/FS was entertaining the kids, and everyone's backs were turned away from the table full of food we (meaning I) stole the turkey.

We got it up to somebody's room on the second floor, and were sort of picking at it, not sure what to do with it, when we heard a knock on the door. One of the wives happened to see us, so she sent the CQ runner (an enlisted guy who is on duty at the desk, as someone is every day, 24 hours a day) up to let us know as long as the turkey was returned, with no questions asked, there would be no consequences.

Honestly, I don't know what I was thinking. Part of it no doubt though, was the resentment over having this event in our barracks, to which we were excluded, and part of it was knowing back home the family was gathering.

Looking back on those days, we tried to pretend it didn't matter. But it did. It's nice to be home for Christmas, and I'm going to cherish this one.

It was chilly for a few days though

When I moved to CA back in the 90's from NJ, people asked me if I missed the snow. I could stand in 65 to 70 degree weather and look at the snow on the mountains, and if I missed it that much it was only an hour drive to The Grapevine

97 Merry Christmas!!!!!! Survived the four year olds last night at the Christmas Eve service, had a wonderful morning opening presents, and am very thankful that my hubby is here with me, instead of being in some God-forsaken craphole, helping ungrateful denizens build a better life for themselves. My heart goes out to any members of the horde whose family is serving today. Love and prayers your way. 90-I have 2 1/2 in filet mignon ready to grill, with roasted fingerling potatoes, sauteed baby carrots and zucchini, and blanched haricot verts with almonds in butter and garlic. Don't need dessert after that!

104 Sambucca in cawfee. Still high from the angels voices in the choir at Midnight Mass a few hours ago. Only one retard kid with an "its all about attitude" shirt and a knit cap. His brother finally grabbed it from his head but just once I'd like to see our grizzly bear German pastor walk off the the altar and punch the kid out from under the cap. What a lesson about religion and God that would be. Its there somewhere in the Bible. I just can't put my finger on it.

106 I want to be able to say "convicted for firearms violations" every time he opens his yap, but what a stupid law. The Army-Navy stores used to sell those for a few bucks right next to the dummy rounds and the field jackets. I might even have one or two in the duffel bag with my old TA-50.

109 The Fisher House is wonderful. I am currently staying at the LA one. My wife spent four months in Santa Monica with preterm conditions, while I'm stationed in Tucson. She was released from the hospital for three weeks until the delivery. We were able to get into Fisher a week after release and have been there since. Our girl was born on the 22nd and this is a great Christmas. There are mostly veterans staying there dealing with serious end of life issues. Their wives were glad to see my wife bring a ray of sunshine to the house with her condition of new life.

Turned in my 7 issued mags, gave away about 10 to other guys in the unit, the rest stayed in my duffle for about 15 years when I bought my first AR. Of course, I can't use them here in my beloved Clownifornia, unless I seriously modify my AR to comply with the law. Might just do that with another lower just to flip the finger to the CA legislature.

113 This open thread is very appropriate, for I have just read the President's Yuletide Message, where he congratulates those who have gone beyond the typical standard of American citizenship and have volunteered to put themselves in harm's way, if needs be, and for less financial benefits, and greater potential danger, than police or fire service. I am heartened to see this, because all too often the rhetoric from the President's Party seems to indicate that those who do and have served are merely inepts in permanent need of social programs, especially for all those mental problems the Left seems to think veterans have--or, if you are Ted Turner, think veterans *should* have, as a scourge of God, or something, I suppose. I understand the President would not actually support these views of veterans, as I have bluntly put, and glad I am of it. If they were put in more polite ways, the President's disapproval I am less sure, but I leave that for other days. My real purpose in writing, however, is to note the President's honoring of those who have endeavoured to show faithful and loyal valor. I do not believe the President would ever try to lump these men and women among those who, as a class, are incapable of exercising all the restraints and duties of manful citizenship, and who thus must have freedoms curtailed. Therefore, when the gun bans come from the Vice-President's task force, as they surely will, I hope they have a exemption for all who have worn the uniform, especially those who gave carried weapons in combat zones. To tell a veteran he can be trusted to exercise with restraint the use of a weapon in a war zone, with complex rules of engagement, but cannot be trusted to keep the same weapon inside his own home--but that a police officer can--might be considered insulting, demeaning, and be seen, when combined with the President's Party continual attempts to define veterans as in permanent need of some social program from the almighty and all-knowing government (especially mental counseling), as an attempt to treat veterans as chidren. I say, at the very least, a veteran should be able to own any gun he has qualified for while in the military.

His actions-all of them over the years, to include requiring wounded soldiers to use their insurance to pay for their treatment in the zone-say exactly what he thinks. His speech writer put in some pretty words to make it look sincere.
