9 What a wonderful Christmas Eve and morning spent with some of the finest people on the planet. A Christmas gathering of two families that has been going on since 1948. A baby born in October up through a man who captained a ship in WWII. 8 or 9 kids under 10. To be asked to be a part of it, and to be welcomed by all the way I was, I. Have. No. Words. A wise man once said, when you have no words, steal from the best, so... I've been waiting for angels, who are already here. Merry Christmas horde.

24 What a service record Charles Durning had. D-day invasion, only survivor of his Army unit to make it ashore. Bayoneted by a Nazi whom he later killed with a rock. Taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge, survived a prisoner massacre. Silver star, 3 Purple hearts.

RIP Mr. Durning.

31 Merry Christmas to all! Money was tight thanks to Obama's economy and presents were limited, but the greatest gift I received was seeing my only Grandson for the first time. He was born back in April and had smiles all around for his gramps. Of course I had to excuse myself for a minute to clean out all the mist from my eyes due to obviously some steam or something in the room that only affected me.

40 Merry Christmas to all. Hope we all have a prosperous New Year ...but. I have my doubts. Posted by: Paladin at December 25, 2012 01:36 PM (/bsc We'll be fine. We have each other. For those of you that didn't see My night before Christmas poem. Twas the night before Christmas And all through Ace’s house Not a creature was stirring, not one pubic louse The panties where hung from the clothesline with care To give the stale crotches some much needed air When all of the sudden there arose such a clatter AlextheChick slipped on her stompyboots to see what was the matter To the window she scurried her ass When a Reindeer turd landed, Splat! right on the glass Vic looked up from reading the news, his face all forlorn While the young rons where in the attic fapping to porn The ronnettes gathered to hatch a plan They wanted kick ass gifts from the bearded fat man They pulled their frilly knickers up above the knee Then lounged like little vixens, neath the christmas tree When suddenly out of the fireplace, Santa Appeared He had no bag of gifts, and that seemed awfully weird. The rons stopped fapping and gathered on the stairs The fat man looking jolly, just stood smiled and starred. He reached for the nog, so cold and icy It was loaded down with Val-u-rite and just a little bit spicy. With a gloved hand, he wiped his beard His eyes began to twinkle and his throat he cleared. His voice thundered loud enough to wake up the dead It even shook Ace out of his bed. People I will tell you, I have watched you all year Voicing your happiness your sadness and fear I have no gifts for you, because you need nothing You have each other and that is really something. Our world has grown cold, lonely and dark, it is people like you the provide a needed spark I challenge you to be kind to those who are ignorant and mean When you want to make your voice angry and dirty, try to keep it clean On this holiest of nights remember you are loved By each other and the one from above Santa chugged another nog and up the Chimney he went When suddenly a troll popped out of the heating vent He yelled out loud, HaHa, no gifts for you Cause you hate the black man, Mexicans and Jews Captain hate smiled and said “We need no gifts just each other And by the way, go fuck your mother. The troll ran outside and saw Santa in his sleigh He could not defeat the Morons on this holiest of days And as Santa rode off the troll screamed with a leer “YOU'RE A POTBELLIED ASSHOLE, AND PROBABLY QUEER!

44 Anyone have a good recipe for chicken tortilla soup? Posted by: JustLikeDavidHasselhoff at December 25, 2012 01:02 PM (Rwrs+) Last one I made was Trisha Yearwood's. I use precooked and frozen chicken fajitas instead of plain chicken and deglazed the pan with a bottle of beer after I cook (thaw, really) the chicken in with the garlic and onions. I like to add two cans of corn instead of one. I also just dumped all the cheese in instead of serving it on the side, though I also had some extra to serve on the side. FYI, this is a creamy soup, not a brothy one and is fattening as all get out. Very hearty, though, My mountain of a man is content to have just this as a meal, which is unusual for him; soup is more of an appetizer to him! http://tinyurl.com/ck27e2a

Real kids voice overs, biblical readings, and a jazz score, crazy right?

Well worth catching at some point.

Going to see the Dog Whisperer when he comes to SLC next month. Probably the most romantic gift he gave me was a really pretty dress. He never buys me clothes, so the fact that he spent a couple of months paying attention to what sorts of things I like (I had not seen this particular dress but I do love it) and that he got me a dress for going out in is really thoughtful and sweet.

Two of my presents (purchased with money from in-laws) are a ceramic fondue pot,  that we used for cheese fondue for dinner last night and will use for chocolate desert tonight, and a  cast-iron Korean barbecue pan that fits over a stove burner that I'll be trying out in about 15 minutes. Yes, I am turning my kids in to foodies (although I try to make sure they're familiar with and can appreciate "normal" food as well).

Yes we are doing very well. We've had "six days of Christmas" here since Middlest Kidlet was diagnosed with flu so I decided to quarantine us until we could be sure no one else was sick. Thankfuly it was only a mild case,  and Son was only slightly ill as well, but it meant missing a couple Christmas parties they'd been looking forward to so I wanted to give them a treat to cheer them up. I did tell them though that this will *not* be a tradition.

Some of those fake gold bars have shown up in banks. We really need to drill the bars in Ft. Knox.

Of course, we live in a fraudulent world when bankers can "lease" gold for accounting purposes.

But hey, it's been a wonderful morning. My almost 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter went batshit crazy at 7am when they awoke and spotted their trove under the tree, but I got verklempt when they refused to touch any of their presents until Mommy and Daddy opened up the ones that the kids had made for them. Pretty damned proud of them, and I'll tell you, all of the frustrations and fears I have, the resistance to the lefty machine, is based on the bastards taking that goodness away from my kids through teaching them self-hatred, race and class division, and hatred of America. There's a reason the kids are in a terrific Catholic school (Pledge each morning, Vets Day dinner honoring our Service men and women, etc etc)... God Bless America and the Moron Herd! Well I don't know about a "good" bulgogi recipe, but there's one that came with the pan,  which I got at World Market (my new addiction that I had to *drag* the kids into and then *drag* them out again once they got a look inside) for all of $19.00.

We were almost out of soy sauce and I forgot to get any when we went to the store yesterday so my marinade is a tiny bit of soy sauce,  some oyster sauce for richness, cherry jelly for sweetness, red pepper flakes for heat, and rice wine vinegar for acidity.

The recipe that came with the pan is

1.5-2 lb thinly sliced sirloin or flank steak

1/3 C soy sauce

2 1/2 TB white sugar

1/4 C chopped green onions

2 TB minced garlic

1/2 tsp minced garlic

2 TB sesame oil (optional)

1 TB rice wine

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

I don't think there really is a "set" burning temperature.  Since the ratio of gas to air can be adjusted to get a hotter flame, and different parts of the flame are hotter.  If it helps natural gas is mostly methane.

Other than the lack of sleep, I'm having a pretty good Christmas.

Fell asleep on the couch after midnight, having had to wait until the kids stopped bouncing off the walls before we could put the gifts out.

Woke up around 1am when the weather radio went off. Was so groggy and confused that I decided not to go in the bedroom because I didn't know what the heck that crazy man was doing setting off alarms in there. Fell back to sleep in a recliner.

Next thing I know the kids are up and happy it's morning.

4:30am.

Back to bed for them, and I'm back to the couch. Hear a distant loud noise and can't sleep wondering what it was. Twas the start of a thunderstorm that lasted until afternoon.

Couldn't sleep between the kids "whispering" in their room, the thunder, and the cat. Kitty found her present of a food bowl with some treats in it and unwrapped it herself.

Melt/pound the shavings back into the hole(s).  Gold is one of the few metals that's "self healing" when you pound on it.

The only way to be sure there's no dispersed contaminants, like Tungsten BB's or bits of wire is to beat/roll it out to the micron range thickness of gold leaf.  Then even some finely milled Tungsten dust contaminant will make its way to the surface where it could be chemically or optically detected.

There's no so many gold bars on the planet that this couldn't be accomplished in a matter of weeks in a specially designed validation facility.

212 "Do investigate the depth of penetration for your XRF method and get back to us about the implications for the gold film thickness necessary to defeat the confidence for the method.

And as a clarification to what I said above, density is a non relevant property because the density of W and Au are, within the sensitivity of typical radiographic techniques, the same here. The only utility of radiography here is to detect subsurface geometric artefacts of the counterfeit manufacturing process."

217 " Ultrasonic thickness gauge is the way to go. Something would have to match the size, weight, and sound speed of Gold all at the same time to be convincing. Gold sound velocity is between 3200-3250 (meters per second), while tungsten is 5180-5400. If you were to set your thickness gauge to a frequency to match gold's velocity and there was tungsten in it, the measurement would come back wacky for the size of the bar/coin.  http://tinyurl.com/34oveox "

I'm thinking a finely milled Tungsten contaminate distributed throughout the core would defeat this method if the counterfeiter didn't get too greedy.

You could probably contaminate the core in (guessing) the low single digits percentage range without detection.

This may already be happening with clever counterfeiters who don't want to get caught.  Its always the greedy criminals who get caught.

The  kids got most of their stocking stuffers, and even some grandparent presents, there and I got pretty much everything that wasn't a Kindle book of my own presents.

We haven't done Korean barbecue before so I'm a little nervous. I'd promised the kids to try to grill a steak for Christmas if the weather was good and I figured this way it wouldn't matter what the weather was like outside.

If you do decide to visit World Market, see if you can make it a couple day trip and I'll take you to the one at Boone Crossing where we go and you can stay with us.

A clever counterfeiter could punch out more plebeian $25-$50 valued pennies and never get close scrutiny.

A retired NYPD detective told me a story about some mobster he knew who owed him some money for getting his daughter out of a jam.  The wise guy took him down into his basement and there was a 55gal drum full of rolled pennies and he tossed the cop a roll as payment.  They were counterfeits, but good ones.

251 76 96 What I'm talking about is "salted" bars, big bars of gold that have a tungsten core with a covering of gold. They look just like gold bars and have s/n's but now everyone's wondering how many of the gold bars in circulation have this problem. Sawing gold bars in half is trying to be avoided, so it just seemed to me that the same non-destructive techniques used to test industrial welds could be used to inspect gold bars for impurities. http://tinyurl.com/93pdqj6 Posted by: DAve at December 25, 2012 02:56 PM (XDC0v) Well, gold has a density of 19.32 grams per cc, and tungsten metal has a density of 19.25 grams per cc. So if you accurately measured the density of a suspect bar, you ought to be able to tell. Shooting a beam of X-rays through the bar, and observing the diffraction pattern ought to work, too.

It's made with either an enzyme starter or a combination of fresh whey (easy to make) and sea salt.  Just chop up the vegs and pound real well, then mix in whey and salt and keep pounding. Put into wide-mouth quart jars and let sit around on the counter a few days. Refrigerate.  It's best after six months, but I usually can't wait that long.

282 Tammy,
When we built this place, we plumbed it for Propane (in the sticks so no Nat-Gas).
We even put a quick-disconnect on the deck for the grill.
The Whirlpool range came set-up for Nat-Gas, so had to take it apart and replace all the jets with smaller ones, as Propane burns much hotter.
It's still too freakin' hot. You can't simmer anything. It's going to boil, or it's off.

347 Sig .308 mags are DPMS COMPATIBLE.  That's important because not every .308 AR is.  If you're serious about getting high-cap .308 AR mags (and you definitely should be!) you better go onto the Exile Machine site first thing in the morning and hope that their holiday shutdown kept everyone else from buying them all- it's entirely possible.  This will get you started but remember EARLY and good luck: http://tinyurl.com/caqx9zo  Merry Christmas!!!

350 Merry Christmas, 'rons and 'ettes!  Like others, I often lurk and seldom comment, but it's nice to drop in every morning for Vic's news updates and to remind myself that I'm not the only "bitter clinger" out there.  Many thanks to Ace, the cob loggers, and the commenters who make me think, make me laugh, and give me ammo (the non-copper-coated variety) for my arguments with the liberal masses who surround me.  God bless you all this season, and in 2013.

353 And there's not a big surprise. Every leftist whackjob who believes in AGW, secular humanism, whatever has it in him and/or her to go apeshit like that dick in Newtown and remove all of what they perceive as the problem. This Austrian asswipe has it in him as well. He just verbalized his desires.

363 357 Yeah Harley I am definitely putting her in the keeper category. After we had unwrapped everything she slipped down the hall and came back with a wrapped shoebox. I opened it and found 10 boxes of .223 shells and a magazine, then she handed me the gun case with the rifle. I literally said WOW!

They're getting even more shrill.  I got one on Twitter.

Even they hedge their "known facts" with language indicating they still aren't really sure what's going on.

And a really dirty secret, their statements focus on industrial output, but they put all organic matter in the mix.  They even argue that the melting of arctic ice will lead to a feedback.

In reality, their only solution is going to be population reductions and they're so fanatical you can bet it won't be voluntary.  It's just that the population reduction movement was so discredited.

368 146 They've always done crap like that (well at least since 85 when I got here), didn't need the transplants even. Hill country and outlying counties are still ok though (for now). I'm in Hays and have a place in Comal Co. I'm fixing up in case the lib sprawl gets more unbearable.

369 I propose a simple solution: Defund all research funding for global climate science.

All of it.

The answers are known, there's no need for more science, it's all public policy now.

So we should devote spending that money on something else.

The Goracles are a deluded fanatical bunch. No matter how much the evidence points against them they will continue the cause. It's what gives them a cause to believe in. ELF, PETA and the like are all the same. "Revolutionaries" looking for a reason to vent their frustrations. Perhaps they should colonize the moon and then we can cut off the funding for more space exploration for five years and start again.

372 O/T question. My parents got a really shitty repair job on the kitchen sink. Long story short, the useless assholes didn't bother gluing the joints together. So what do I need? All the pipes are there. I figure I need to clean the ends real good and then use that purple stuff. Help, please.

Posted by: ErikW on the damned phone at December 25, 2012 05:01 PM (aMwFi)

373 369 That's a good start but it really depends on what is leaking, PVC?,galvanized?, prolly gonna need thread tape if galvanized. What's it doing and where?

Posted by: wierdflunkyonatablet at December 25, 2012 05:10 PM (m/9JW)

374 I couldn't find Old Sailor's book on Amazon.  Is there a direct link somewhere?  Remember...I'm a Moron.

Posted by: BeckoningChasm at December 25, 2012 05:14 PM (xjpRj)

375 It's all PVC. There's a T connector from sink #2 that drains into sink #1 before it drains down into the u shaped pipe. None of the joints were connected. I put everything together, now I'm trying to figure out how to properly glue it.

380 Clean each end you're connecting and use the brush to spread the glue all the way around male and female ends, twist/push them together and you have it. Don't worry about glue drips, nobody's gonna see it anyway,
