About Those Pennsylvania Rumors
— CAC

I have now heard through multiple sources that excitement amongst the party leadership has rebounded regarding Pennsylvania.

Everybody who reads AOS knows my thoughts on the state.

Here is a cold splash from me: the excitement seems to stem from the wrong region.

Western Pennsylvania has been drifting rightward for decades. The Metro Pitt region went for Dukakis by hundreds of thousands of votes. That margin shrank to a pitiful 29k in 2008 for Obama. And therein lies the problem: we are going to win the region for the first time since 1972, but we already almost did in a year where the President stomped McCain statewide by 10. This is the area the GOP is excited about, but unfortunately it is the wrong region in terms of changing the statewide winner.
Winning Metropolitan Pittsburgh despite Allegheny County is a win for the long-term, but the battle for the Keystone comes down to four counties in the southeast: Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, and Chester. This is the 800lb gorilla in the room: the leftward shift of this region over the last two decades has done more to hurt Republican chances in the state than any vote bomb eminating from Philadelphia proper. Had we not lost this region, PA would be redder today than at anytime since WW2 (thanks to the Republicanization of western Pennsylvania). Team Romney needs to tackle the challenge of convincing these moderate suburban ex-Republicans he is right for the job. If he flips Bucks and Chester and holds Obama down significantly in the other two, the state is almost certainly his, Philly be damned.

It is a big job, but as I've stressed, now is not the time for timid campaigning.
Accept the real challenge, and Go Big.

3 I get the sense from Romney and his campaign that they're at least one step ahead of you on this analysis, if not three or four. Not because of specific actions, but because Romney's campaign has been extraordinarily competent. It's not that they have done everything right, it's just that they've done nothing truly important wrong.

I live in Delaware County (Delco in local parlance).  I know back in 2008 the county vote was split 50-50, and that was when I was seeing a lot of Obama signs in the yards.  I have seen NO signs this year, and darn few bumper stickers.  Maybe that'll change as we get closer to the election, but I would say that any idealistic urges for Hope and Change have pretty much evaporated in my county.  Heck, I drive through West Philly every day and am not even seeing signs there.  In 2004 I counted 47 Kerry/Edwards signs in a 2-mile strip on the day after the election, and the Obama stuff was even more present in 2008.  I'm just not seeing it now.

16 I'd gladly sacrifice Lance Armstrong's remaining testicle to see PA go red this year. Obama's super-pac's have been advertising heavily all summer long, and if Romney wants this state, he's going to have to spend a bunch of money for it. A worthwhile investment, IMO.

Obama's PAC's wouldn't be advertising so desperately here if they weren't scared.

In 2008, wasn't there something about Obama's campaign not handing out "walking around money"? If they are tight on money this year, they might not do what's needed to get the vote out.

CAC, surely it depends on HOW MUCH the western part of PA is going Republican?

If it's just "narrow Dem" shifting to "narrow GOP" then you have a point. But perhaps the excitement this time is because it's going GOP in a big way? That might go a long way to overcoming the Dem strongholds without any major moves in suburban Philadelphia?

24 I was stunned by Obama's margin of victory in Bucks and Montgomery counties in 2008. I think he won Bucks by 8% and Montco by about 15%. Bucks may be turnable but I think Montco is probably a lost cause. It has more in common with Philly.

Posted by: rickl at August 29, 2012 05:08 AM (zoehZ)

25

Chesco (Chester County) is a gimme. Bucks is the iffy one, because of the Noo Yawker transplants. I guess Lower Bucks will have to come in big for the GOP. Montco could flip due to economic pain on the Main Line. (Yes Virginia, there *is* trouble in paradise.)

Delco is a union stronghold, also the destination for Philly donks escaping the city. Seems the least likely to flip...imo.

26 I don't want to get too excited, because the capacity for "dumb" among my fellow citizens often dismays me, but if we hold SCOAMT down to low single digit victory in PA, what does that mean for the rest of the states?  Seriously, we're talking about Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania being competitive to leaning red and not in an an ironic or "man I wish" kind of way.

Think about that for a moment.

It'll be interesting to watch what happens with NEPA with all the natural gas money coming in.

A lot of people in my area, (Honesdale PA), hate it. "Don't Frack With My Water" signs are everywhere...almost as prevalent as New York license plates. There have been efforts to shut NG fracking down entirely due to the proximity of these operations to the Delaware Water Gap, (and several more underway). In the local high-school, one of the science teachers shows the schlockumentary 'Gasland' in his classes. I've had more than one kid come home from school to inform me that fracking can cause tap water to become flammable.

Delaware county went to Obama by 20 points, actually, correcting the comment above saying it was 50-50.

Metro Pitt has nowhere near the population that the four collar counties have, guys. That is why even a big shift there does nothing for SEPA. A big shift means some breathing room for fighting O's margins in Montgomery and Delaware, but doesn't get you as close as directly addressing the suburban problem.

As for Rasmussen's daily I find it interesting as all the other pollsters are finding the race tighter/moving to Romney his polling has become the odd-man-out. Obama had a good weekend of sampling, if the numbers switch back it is because a) those rolled off the average and b) Romney has started to see a convention bounce. Time will tell with that.

Obama's margin in 2008 came from legitimate suburban moderates out of the Philadelphia collar counties AND a more even T. McCain only netted 100k out of the T, Bush netted over 425k.

Fraud had nothing to do with McCain's 10 point loss. He sucked and the states demographics were all in for Obama for that race.

I live in Delco, my polling place was packed to the rafters in 2008, contrary to the normal pattern. Many of the new faces were young women. (This was in the western part of the county, not even the union strong river wards). In the Philly collar counties, it will be a precinct to precinct battle. And so much will depend on turnout.

So much so that half of the cars on the road have Missouri, Texas, Iowa, Wyoming, Idaho, West VA, license plates on them. The people that drive these cars are working everyday in high paying Oil and natural gas jobs. Thousands upon thousands of people have transplanted to this area. If even half of them vote republican this state tilts red. Voting for Romney will ensure their jobs in this industry. If Obama wins these jobs will get shut down by the EPA in an executive order minute. This is the Pennsylvania wild card. Mark. My. Words.

65 270 works just as well as 370 and if you wind up missing the mark as a result of spreading resources too thin it'll be too late to say: "oops." Romney has to win this election, not prove a point. Granted, if the professional internal polling actually has him ahead in PA then obviously he should spend money, time and effort there to hold that lead. Otherwise, however, it'll be a case of chasing windmills. You simply can't make that mistake. Not when the country's future hangs in the balance.

71 I grew up in SE MontCo, it used to be a Republican stronghold until the Clinton years, and it's still generally Republican state officials elected there. I'm also close friends with several members of the Matthews clan, my brother was best man in one of their weddings. Chris is the political outsider of that family, the rest of them are big-time Republicans, and the one that is my childhood friend is hard right, almost libertarian in his views. Their perspective on the James Matthews story is obviously more forgiving than the local liberal media paints it. However, CAC is definitely right about one thing--without flipping those big 4 counties, nothing else in PA realistically matters. Montgomery County, which is about the size of metro LA in area, would be something like the 10th largest city in the country if it were incorporated--population is well north of 700K, and it's the sort of place that represents PA politics in a microcosm--densely populated in the south, rural in the north, rife with pro-life Democrats and pro-choice Republicans, and corrupt as hell. Delaware, Chester, Bucks and Montco together have more population than Philly, and if those go even slightly red it turns the huge Dem advantage in Philly to a close loss in PA for the donks, and even a 35-40% showing in Philly for the Repubs would mean landslide victory statewide.

Citizen fo Montgomery County here.  CAC has nailed it on the head.  For Republicans to win, they need the suburbs of Philly.  Unfortunately, the suburbs, which used to be fairly Republican, have been become very purple, dare a I say bluish over the years.  Romney needs to focus like a laser on economic issues and competence.

It doesn't seem like Tom Smith is gaining traction for Senate. I voted for him, but he's not hammering away on economic issues in a way that will appeal to the people in the Philly suburbs.  However, if Romney plays his cards right, he can win here.

The thing I'm worried about now is the Senate race in North Dakota.  Seems to getting tighter.

118 Bucks may be turnable but I think Montco is probably a lost cause. It has more in common with Philly.

Bucks elected Mike Fitzpatrick and rid itself of Patrick Murphy in 2010 by about 20,000 votes, and delivered for Corbett and Toomey as well with overwhelming wins for state House and Senate candidates.  Organization is much better coming off the 2010 cycle.

MontCo doesn't have much in common with Phila - it is actually has the second highest per capita income amongst counties of the Commonwealth and has part of the "Main Line" within it (think Randolph and Mortimer in Trading Places).  I fear that the problem with MontCo is that it is too socially liberal to be "turnable" for even a moderate Republican Presidential candidate.  By way of illustration, Arlen Spector used to do very well in MontCo.

The upside in Phila may be that the GOP has a new City Commissioner - Al Schmidt - whose office is to insure free and fair elections.  He's unveiled a 27 page report on voting irregularities in Phila in the 2012 primaries alone.

I don't know about beaver shit...but the tap water in my area smells horrid....literally, it has an odor that reminds one of a septic tank, and tastes even worse. And for all that...I can't even light it on fire.

A reverse osmosis filter in the kitchen has fixed the taste/smell problems, at least for that tap. The filter cartridges have to be replaced about every month though...they clog up fast, and look amazingly disgusting when I pull them out. The smell however, (primary filter),...instant gag reflex.

I think the culture is slowly changing, but not fast enough.  These people have been slaves to unions for so long that it's hard for them to break away and think for themselves.  The time when unions served any valuable purpose at all to these people is long past, but it's still a cultural thing.  They bleed dem.  They've faught wars for their unions, literally.  It's sad that people can still be manipulated like this.  If you want to see 3rd world poverty, go to southern West Virginia.  It's unbelievable.

I wasn't sure what you meant about construction not how Breezewood is layed out.  Been there done that probably > 100 times.  It does make a nice $ for PA.  I don't go thru Thanksgiving/Christmas Eve rush nights so it's usually just a few minutes longer than a ramp depending on the lights and whether it's time to eat/pee/stretch.

167 Rasmussen has the race 46 - 45 Obama today. It's been within the margin of error for weeks and it is a likely voter poll. Obama often surges on the weekends and then falls back during the week, this week is no different. If you look at a Rasmussen trend line, Romney has posted consistently higher highs and Obama lower lows and if you look at it over time Romney has been ahead about 3/4 of the time. This is horrible for an incumbent who has had the money advantage for months. I don't think they are inconsistent at all.

Another interesting thing about Penna. is that they were ahead of the the other states on some pretty massive expenditures.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike was America's first, long before massive Federal funding.   Likewise the extensive network of State Game Lands was a response to the almost total deforestation of the early 20th century.

Later, other states did similar projects using Federal help.

Eh - part of the issue in Bucks County in the recent decade or so has been people from New Jersey moving to Bucks to avoid the tax burden only to vote in a manner which would make Bucks more like the New Jersey that they left.  Plenty of people can and do commute from Bucks to NYC - my mother's neighbor moved to Bucks from L.I. because, he claimed, his commute was shorter.  With the increase in "telecommuting" this has been an ongoing problem.

189 Bin Laden apparently was hit in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in “No Easy Day.” The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)’s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a “point man” going up the stairs. “Less than five steps” from top of the stairs, he heard “suppressed” gunfire: “BOP. BOP.” The point man had seen a “man peeking out of the door” on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

In my little Delco Township the couple of D's we had in local positions were ousted, and we gained an R-House seat. 2012 Pennsylvania is not 2008 Pennsylvania.

Steve grabbed Larry Ellison by the shoulders and said "This is why I'm your friend.  You don't need any more money."

222 In poll after poll after poll, the number 1 issue by far is the economy. Not abortion and not wymens issues. They barely move the needle and yet the entire focus of the Dem convention will be about Sandra Fluke getting free condoms. Any state where Obama is polling less than 50% is worth playing for even if just to force Obama to play there. What exactly does Obama have to run on? He's tried to kill Romney for the last 3 months and it didn't work. The economy isn't getting any better before Nov. 6 and that is what most people will ultimately vote on and Obama is polling very poorly on the economy. Fear not. This isn't '08 and Romney is not McCain.

272 Well, the outrageously outraged outrage that is coming from the left is the racistly racist racism of the Book of Mormon.

You see, a book originally meant to be read by 19th century folk used the common practice of the time to refer to the good guys with characteristics such as pure, clean, white, etc. and the bad guys as dirty, unclean, black, etc. You know, just like everyone else at the time did.

I guess they've never heard the phrase "black heart" or "black soul" and that it predates modern racism. Or that not a single pre-20th century painting of Jesus has him in brown or dark skin.

I didn't bother reading the whole article but, I suspect that they conveniently skipped over the part where the "dark, dirty, unclean" bad guys at the beginning become the "light, pure, clean" good guys at the end; making it pretty clear that the adjectives--which they will attempt to ascribe to pure racism--are more allegorical and illustrative of one's moral standing than their actual physical attributes.

Good luck with that Race Card. I'm sure it's just racism as to why it keeps getting declined and not that you're over the limit.

292 You talk like the rumors being whispered are from the Romney campaign.  I am certain they are not.  They know the key is suburban Philly, not the western part of the state.  They will be trying to follow Toomey's victory map.

Also note that Obama is running commercials in the Philly market.  He sure isn't doing that because he is worried about Camden or Wilmington.

295 CAC I don't get it--*if* the rumor is the Republicans are getting the votes in Allegheny County Pittsburgh area--how is it they are not getting the Montgomery, Bucks Co. area? My Dad is from Pittsburgh when I bothered to watch PA closely before I got sick of Republicans losing it--Allegheny was always bluer than those areas. Hell we sent Lynn Swann (he ran for governor IIRC as a Republican) in there one year and still lost PA. So you are saying that the demographics changed and somehow Allegheny county has lately trended more red then the more affluent burbs of Philly? Cripes what the hell!?

Ima hope that backfires big time with the people who have lost jobs, homes, and savings during obama's tenure

___

The unemployment and housing meltdown have hit the formerly comfortable collar counties harder than anyone knows or is willing to admit.

According to Dept. of Labor, only 56% of those laid off 2009-2011 have found jobs, a third of them taking pay cuts of 20% or more. Philly metro is not exempt from that reality. Laid off workers have blown through their 401ks in order to make ends meet until they got a new job, if they were that lucky. I'm hearing war stories from the Main Line that were unheard of since, well, forever.

RealtyTrac offers a glimpse into distressed housing inventory, it's a real eye-opener to see how many of the listings are located in the zip codes formerly considered bulletproof.

Today I've seen onlly one and I've taken rides throughout southern and central Bucks, the areas closest to Philly. Also I'm beginning to see anti-Obama bumper stickers on cars...some hilarious. I've only seen one Obama bumper sticker. Everyone I talk to freely brings up Obama and they can't stand him. I've put some "Under my plan, energy prices would necessarily skyrocket" stickers on gas pumps around here. I just go to several stations at a time and pump $5 worth and slap a sticker on the pump.

332 This is exactly why we should end "winner take all" electoral votes.  Those four counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania effectively disenfranchise the rest of the state.  Pennsylvania had the right idea earlier this year.  States should give two electoral votes to the candidate who takes the state overall representative of the EV allocated for the state's at-large Senate seats and they should give one EV to the winner of each House district.

The "problem" with that and the reason why many places won't do it is that it allows third party candidates to potentially accumulate electoral votes by taken a few House districts around the nation but so be it.

That said, I wish someone (Ace, maybe?) would begin to display some righteous anger at the shit being pulled on us every day, as is shown by the current lead story at BB, which displays audio/video evidence of the slanted "reporting" from ABC. 362 A slow moving hurricane is like a sloppy guest who does not leave.

With Isaac moving so slowing, it still has some feeder bands bringing in energy and rain from the Gulf of Mexico.  So as it sits over the New Orleans area, the rainfall amount will keep climbing.  Which means we get to see if the rebuilt pumping stations can keep up.  Though one place they pump to is Lake Pontchartrain so with the pumping they add pressure on the levees.

Even the Mississippi Gulf Coast is being flooded by rain and storm surge.  Large stretches of Hwy 90 on the beach are impassible.  Even some of the back roads are under water.

374 After reading a bunch about Ann Romney's dress, I had one of them mind-thoughts of recollection: Michelle Obama's dressmaker - the one whose design she wore to give the 2008 "My Husband" speech? And whose work was repeatedly worn by Herself, Michelle? Went bankrupt in 2010. Mitt gave her cancer - which won't show up until 2017 - because he can (and he's Mormon.) _

I use to live in Key West and the Panhandle of Florida--I've seen the media reporting from Duval street in Key West in this puddle that floods if Key West gets rain for two minutes. I hate to say this but after watching that crap I kind of get why the people of NOLA do not take the media seriously. The media has lost credibility over the years because I am almost positive they have seen the media pull the same stunts up there.

Romney will take Bucks. They vote their pocketbook when times are tough (though they won't admit it in public or to a pollster) and times are tough. They elect a Dem congressman when they feel good about their money and a Repub when they feel bad. They elected a Republican congressman in 2010 and I don't see that things have changed much, except for those living 100% off the market (in which case their portfolios might be a shadow of their former selves, assuming they didn't go all in on bank stock).

I think they have patted themselves on the back enough for their votes for Barky, and now will get back to business.

Romney is actually a perfect fit for Bucks... a moderate. They aren't particularly religious people (other than the Catholics) so the Mormon thing likely won't bother them.

My parents still live there, in the suburban middle part of the county, just south of the serious money in Solebury and just north of the working class in Langhorne.

Posted by: the other coyote at August 29, 2012 09:25 AM (yK44T)

408 I also live in Bucks and I will flat out predict that Romney will carry Bucks by a lot. The Democrats were barely able to come up with a candidate for the 8th District House seat. I can't tell you how many people I know personally who voted for Obama - and I know this will piss off people here, but most of them did because of Sarah Palin - and they are all voting Romney. The GOP is very organized here and already running a good ground game of IDing voters and getting info out to undecideds. My husband was an Obama volunteer in 2008 and he is hearing nothing from OFA this year - no phone class, no mail, no door to door visits - and they blanketed this area in 2008. One friend told me he thinks Obama is almost deliberately insulting voters here by pandering to illegal immigrants, welfare recipients, teachers unions, etc. He said when he listens to Obama he thinks he must live in a different country. This is why Romney's somewhat maudlin rhetoric about believing in America is good - it resonates in areas like this which are very patriotic. And there are TONS of Catholics in Bucks County. This weekend is the biggest Polish Catholic festival in the country in Doylestown. I'm going to go just to see what kind of Republican prospecting I see there. Romney's visit to Poland was wall-to-wall covered in the local Polish newspaper.

Posted by: rockmom at August 29, 2012 10:02 AM (qe2/V)

409 BTW, Michelle Obama was in Philadelphia recently and her visit did not get a lot of play. She skipped over Bucks and Montgomery and then went up to Bethlehem, which is a Democrat stronghold. It's pretty obvious that Team Obama isn't even going to try to win Bucks.

Just as "you didn't build it" helped jump-start Mitt's campaign, those bitter people clinging to their guns and their religion no longer have Ed Rendell adding thousands of fraudulent votes to Eastern Pa's count.

Rendell has tried to get some interest from Obama's team ( $ ) so I suppose it will come down to did they read his smoke signals?

Corbett may see storm troopers intimidating voters ( New Panthers ) a little differently than Rendell saw them.
