Absolutely Apolitical Open Thread
— Gabriel Malor

No really, I don't want to hear it and, I suspect, many other folks don't really want to hear it on this beautiful Easter Saturday either.

So tell me about your recipes, Easter or Passover. Tell me about your family trip. Tell me about the neighbor that keeps parking on the grass. But, for the love of Pete, do not tell me about the SCOAMF, racism, delegate counts, or your burning desire to tell Democrats how you really feel about them.

Now DANCE, MONKEYS!

5 Best Easter ever here. Slept in this morning, got the whole crew coming down for the day. Weather is perfect for a cookout, cool enough that most would want a light jacket. So I got the grill ready to go and going to spend the day with good food, good friends and the best damn woman on the planet. Just doesn't get any better than that.

@37,

Vacuum sealing is also fun.  Especially because they actually shrink smaller after you release the seal again.  A friend and I once thought we should sell "Jumbo Peeps" under vacuum seals just to piss people off when they opened them.

Easter, Eh?  The Wife and I are heading back to her family's for the first time after we all said our apologies over the last big family spat (that included several "Don't ever talk to me again" statements in there).  Should be fairly interesting I suppose.  I think everything got worked out, but boy it was ugly for a bit. (And yes, it's allowed in this thread, it was an apolitical fight. If only it had been politics.)

Usually the food doth, suckith at these things (same old Store bought mostacholi, garlic bread and hotwings.) I'm told this year someone decided to buy catered BBQ! (Yay! Changes!)

97 89 That's why you have an adult female watching. You let it get really big and then hit "off" at the right time. It sinks down on the plate and there is no mess. Only a woman who has cleaned a microwave can be responsible enough to hit off in time.

98 "hey, anyone have a recipe for "lasagna" using elbow macaroni or some noodle other than those effin flat noodles?" Sure Yankee - take a pound of hamburger and brown it in a skillet. Throw your ground hamburger, some elbow macaroni, some spiral macaroni noodles into a large baking dish. Add jar of store bought spagetthi sauce, prego, ragu, whatever floats your boat, some mozzarella cheese - the stuff you can get pre-grated in a bag works great. Throw some grated Parmesan over the top and bake at 350 for about 25 minutes. If you want to spice it up a bit add some Italian sausage (I prefer the mild but if you like the hot it works too) and a can of fire roasted tomatoes.

119 Went to an Easter Egg hunt with the just-turned-three Knucklehead - about 200 kids at a local farm.   As I expected, it turned a bit "Lord of The Flies".  Knucklehead was reaching for one egg when another adult told his kid "Quick - get that egg" and the idiot's 4 y/old cuts off my kid and bowls him over.   Very nice.

Turns out a lot of the eggs were in a fenced-off area surrounded by a 4 foot high wire fence (too fragile to support an adult) with the entrance on the other side (about a hundred feet away).   The obvious thing to do - lift Knucklehead (and his 11 year-old big sister who was carrying the basket for the little guy) over the fence to get to the eggs first while the rest of the kids go the long way around.   All the mothers gave me dirty looks, and the fathers just smiled and nodded, and commenced airlifting their kids .  Since Knucklehead had enough time to score a few eggs while they figured it out, my daughter said afterwards that she thought of turning saying to the rest of the parents "In Your Face".  But luckily, she's got more self-control than I.

Total haul - about 6 eggs with two pieces of chocolate in them each.   More than enough sugar to really get the little bugger all wired up for Mom to deal with while I go to the office and work on a paper I'm presenting at a academic-nerd conference next Friday.

Tomorrow, it's off to the RightWingWife's sister's house for Easter Gluttony.  She's one of three sisters who are all good cooks, and rumor has it one of them is going to do deviled eggs with bacon pieces (I suggested it thanks to the Moron Horde).  So between that, the MegaHam the Mother In Law cooks and all the trimmings, I should be well on the way to food-induced coma in about 24 hours.

Happy Easter to all you twisted puppies we call the regulars.  For those who swing that way, tomorrow He is Risen.

144 "Damn that sounds good. Hell, I can almost smell it..." I'd make it some times as an alternative if I was out of Lasagna noodles. Lasagna isn't really that hard to make, it's the noodles that usually throw people. Unlike a smaller noodle the lasagna noodle is long and flat, and if you prepare it entirely in the oven it generally doesn't get done properly. The center will be undercooked while the edges generally get overcooked. Now opinions on this vary of course, but for me the best way to prepare lasagna is to boil the noodles first. Like all pasta your best bet is a large pot of water with a pinch or two of salt. Bring it to a roiling boil, drop in your noodles for 8-10 minutes, stir often. Drain and rinse with cold water. In your baking dish layer the bottom with sauce before putting your noodles in - cheese should be mozzarella and ricotta - never cottage. Cottage cheese is a poor substitute for ricotta IMHO. Then you just build in layers. Meat and cheese, a little sauce, more noodles, repeat. For meat I like a mixture of hamburger and Italian sausage - I prefer the mild myself. Generally about 3 parts hamburger to 1 part sausage seems to be about the right mixture. A nice layer of Parmesan over the top. Take some foil, give it a light spray of cooking oil to prevent the cheese from sticking to it, cover the whole thing and put it in the oven at around 375 for about 30 minutes. Pull the foil off and put back in the oven for about another 20 minutes. Bam. Lasagna.

154 Just use about an inch thick layer of macaroni instead of lasagna noodles.  Otherwise layer it just like you would with regular lasagna.  You probably need a little more sauce, and I'd make it in a deep dish since the layers of macaroni are thicker (in fact I've made it in a small stock pot before.)

It starts at 8 and goes until 11 at a downtown rooftop restaurant/bar. I swear it's as organized/elaborate as a wedding. Private bartenders/staff, choice of like 5 entrees, 5 types of beer, 5 types of liquor. We're "the old people" in this group and haven't been out drinking in years. I get the feeling a lot of these people are real boozers. I've heard stories that remind me of my own misspent youth. My wife drinks almost zero alcohol these days, so she'll be watching dozens of people get plastered while (hopefully) enjoying her meal. I'll participate in the plastering so the kids don't think I'm a geezer.

I'm a big fan of hers (as well as Debbie Diamond, Christy Canyon, etc)... but she quit porn a fews times & did some legit & horribly fun films. The Traci Lords workout was actually a real workout, so I figured Ginger's might be also...I was wrong.

193 Strangest Easter Sunday I ever spent was in Memphis. A guy I was dating and I both worked at the same hotel in Chicago and late Friday night we found out that we both had the next 3 days off so we figured, "Hey! Let's drive down to New Orleans!". (Yeah, alchohol was probably part of the decision making process.) After about 7hrs, "Oh, eff this! You ever been to Memphis?" "Nope. You?" Beal St. was fun on Saturday night but Sunday morning we were at a loss as to what to do. Graceland! Duhhh! If you've ever been you know what a weird cat Elvis was and the awesomness of green shag carpeting. Best part though, was when the girl giving the tour explained, very solemnly that the TCB & lightening bolt painted on the wall in the TV room stood for, "Taking care of business in a flash. Which was Elvis's personal philosophy." Not so great was the meditation fountain though where people were weeping and moaning about Elvis beeing dead. Kind of disturbing that part was. At that point I just really wanted to get out of there. So, moral of the story is, if you have the choice between spending Easter Sunday at Graceland or in church...go to church!

195 179 - Ok, sorry. I really am terribly naive at times. Full disclosure (and hopefully not TMI), for quite a while there I didn't really understand the point and purpose of porn movies. Honestly, the first time I ever saw a real porn movie, I was in the service, sitting around a room with a bunch of guys, and believe me, nobody was "using" these movies in that setting. I, however, am sitting there wondering why anyone would watch something like that with a bunch of guys sitting around the room. it just never dawned on me until much later, the single-person viewing experience. And then it occurred to me, how could you go into an adult vid store and buy them, knowing everyone knows exactly what your intended purpose was? Like I said, naive.

157 116 Oh and ettes? why do chicks destroy the ears first on the chocolate bunnys and leave it in the fridge to become a science experiment?

Maybe it wasn't made out of the 'good' chocolate?.....And all it took was nibbling the ears off, to realize that it was that sort of sugary, fake-tasting, waxy-textured chocolate, that you have to be really hard up for chocolate to eat....so she stashed it away for later?

Just guessing. ....That, um, has never happened to me.

-----

Or.....a partially eaten chocolate bunny in the fridge [if it's the 'good' chocolate], could be an  'emergency chocolate stash'. ...You have to have those.

Just knowing that there  is  no chocolate in the house....whatsoever....can bring on chocolate cravings. ....Like, really really bad chocolate cravings. So, you have to have a chocolate stash.

We've got a really cool kit that comes with fuzzy hair, googly eyes, teeth stickers, and pipe cleaner arms and legs so we can make the eggs into monsters (at the request of my 5-year-old son). Tomorrow it's mass early, then the egg hunt at the parish (for my kiddies). Easter dinner will be Balsamic Maple Glazed Ham, with green bean casserole, cheese souffle, and for dessert we have home made Easter Bread and "Marshmallow Garden" cupcakes (chocolate cupcakes light icing, topped with green tinted coconut and a jumbo marshmallow dipped in pastel colored sugar- also at the request of my son).

209 @194 Memphis is fun, but never make the mistake the RightWingWife and I made and visit there in mid-July (what the bleep were we thinking)?   We lived in Southern Illinois (Carbondale) and had nothing better to do, so we drove the 200 miles to spend a day and a night.  Had a 20 month old with us and one on the way.   By the end of the morning, we were all but passed out from the heat on Beale.

But they had some of the best barbecue I've ever tasted. There was a place on the east side of the city that even served a chocolate sauce with it. Strange, but tasty.

But if your on a budget try rib-eye, marinate it for about 30 minutes to an hour in Wishbone Italian salad dressing (the regular, not the creamy) and then grill. Makes a great steak, wonderful flavor and tender.

That would be friggin awesome, eh?

264 I cannot watch romantic comedies anymore. They're stupid. And dramas bore me.

****

I am a huge sucker for the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks movies although, seriously, Meg Ryan's character in Sleepless in Seattle doesn't look so hot on paper. My favorite Meg Ryan movie is When Harry Met Sally.

A couple of other really good rom-coms are Only the Lonely with John Candy and Return to Me with Mimi Driver.

And, of course, the Hepburn girls are always worth a watch.

265 Three Four must haves for Easter meal:

1) Glazed Ham
2) Kielbasi
3) Cidek (AKA Hrutka)
4) Deviled eggs

On cold Easters we have mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn. On warm Easters (like tomorrow) potato salad and cole slaw along with the four top items.

And, of course, a relish tray of green and black olives, celery stalks, radishes, baby sweet gherkins and scallions.

Fresh horseradish and yellow mustard must be on the table to accompany the meats.

It's time to start boiling the eggs for the deviled eggs and mixing the milk and eggs for the cidek.

266 So I was watching a Mastodon video on You Tube the other day and it occurred to me - why are contemporary metal vocalists required to sound as if they're grunting and growling their way through a extremely difficult bowel movement? What happened to the quasi-operatic tones of a Ronnie James Dio or Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson? Sigh...they just don't sing heavy metal like they used to.

Getting ready to sell my house also, and my real estate agent said that with all the mortgage crap and defaults, the lenders are asking the inspectors to use ultra due diligence to ensure that if they (the banks) get stuck with a foreclosure there will be no major building flaws for them to deal with.  "Minor" things that would have been under the threshold a few years ago are now show-stoppers.

270 Passover seder menu last night: Roast Duck, Asparagus, Sauteed mix of potato and sweet potato, tomato and lettuce salad, meringues with ice cream and fresh strawberries for dessert. Wine was a California Syrah from an estate once owned by Lillie Langtry. (Which has nothing to do with Passover, it's just interesting.)

Tonight: Beef shank braised in tomato sauce with wine, rice, more ice cream and strawberries for dessert.

Easter:  Duck fried rice, with chocolate bunnies.

285 Second best encounter (after Walton) - when our son was first diagnosed, we lived in Atlanta.  He went to the same preschool as one of John Smoltz' kids.  So, our wives knew each other in passing.  When we got the news, we also had a 2 year old girl.   Smoltz' wife offered to let our daughter stay with them for a couple days to take some of the strain off.   I would have suggested they write her into the will, but the wife would have killed me right then and there.

So all the stories you might remember about how Smoltz was a genuine standup guy were pretty much right on target.  I have a friend who used to be his neighbor, and he used to hang out with the guy (he's my only really truly wealthy friend - it was a pretty exclusive neighborhood).  He said the same about Smoltz - it wasn't just marketing/show.

290 Okay, I guess I'll share my brush with fame. My Dad lives in the same condo as Gary Bergman. Yes, THAT Gary Bergman. I was amazed when my Dad said to me, "You want to meet Gary Bergman?" I thought he was joking, but he took me upstairs, knocked on the door, and when it opened, there was Gary Bergman! He's not what I expected, that's for sure. (He's a lot taller than I thought he would be.) I tried to play it cool, you know, the way you do when you're with someone who's famous, so I didn't mention his work. And you'd better believe I knew better than to bring up his wife! He was in the middle of lunch when we stopped by, so we sat at the table, and a couple of times I thought how weird and amazing it was -- there I was, sitting at a table and on the other side of the table Gary Bergman was eating an egg salad sandwich. He made the egg salad himself, too. You'd think someone like Gary Bergman would have people to make egg salad for him, or maybe have it imported, but apparently he likes making his own. I didn't get to try any. When we left, I did work up the nerve to ask for his autograph, and he said sure and signed a paper plate for me. It was even his plate! So on my office wall (where everyone can see it when they come in) I have a real paper plate that belonged to Gary Bergman, signed by Gary Bergman himself.

Posted by: Hydrocarbon Liberation Front at April 07, 2012 04:17 PM (NVu2l) You bastard. I'm so jealous. When I was doing the GI Bill college thing in the early 90s, I worked nights with an old retired guy who was part of Mitchum's Tuesday night drinking crew at the Biltmore. He invited me to come out and meet Mitchum, but I stupidly took a rain check because it was during mid-term week. A short time later, Mitchum's health took a turn for the worse and he largely retired from drinking in public before his passing. Always regretted that. Stupidest decision ever, in a life full of stupidity. Other brushes with celebrity: talked to John Cleese several times in the checkout line at Vons (dude is REALLY tall, and never washes his hair), briefly talked laptop computers with Flea when he stopped to ask me about the tiny travel mouse I used with my laptop, and I once let Elliot Gould read my LA Times front page at a coffee shop.

336 Tami.. my mom also makes a killer strawberry/rhubarb pie.  WHen they start selling it at the river market I always buy her some and she makes me my own pie.  God, it's delicious.  She's 82 but can still cook like nobody's business.

337 @336.. that made me laugh my ass off.  Shared it with hubby and thought it was a great idea.

Wonderful. Thanks, Dems! That CRA and subprime shit was sheer genius.

The ayatollah inspector finally left after a powwow with the buyers and their realtor, so we just came back. I was about to start charging rent.

No report as yet, so I'm keeping everything crossed (fingers, eyes, balls, the lot) that there's nothing major, expensive, or a pain in the ass to fix. He's probably going to say the lawn needs mowing; he was here long enough for it to grow out.

339 I bet she makes her own crusts from scratch too, huh jewells?  I have a friend, 85 yo Jewish woman.  She makes pie crust like it's her day job.  I think she also grows some rhubarb so I'm waiting for a call that she's made strawberry rhubarb pie.  I'll be there before she hangs up the phone.

Posted by: Tami at April 07, 2012 01:58 PM (X6akg)

340 brb. Going to check if the rhubarb is ready to pick.

Posted by: Ronster at April 07, 2012 02:01 PM (XkVVw)

341 Tami.. she used to.. sadly she has gone to the dark side the past few years and uses the premade stuff.  It's still delicious though.  When I was a kid we lived in Minot, ND and this old man next door grew rhubarb and gave some to mom one year.  That's when she started making them and every year til we got assigned to CA he would bring over a huge basket of the rhubarb.  He was a sweet old guy.  Never married.  We called him the old batch (bachelor).  LOL- I don't think we ever knew his name!

Ynot, I've been trying for 4 years to decide on drapes for our master bedroom.  I can't ever settle on anything.  Thank God we have blinds but I am sick of them.  I need to get off the dime and do something.

Sure, parting the sea is a heck of a scene, but the Passover...pass over can still give me Heebie jeebies. Wonder how soon moderan H'Wood will try to remake that one, all in CG?

359 345 Ynot, I've been trying for 4 years to decide on drapes for our master bedroom. I can't ever settle on anything. Thank God we have blinds but I am sick of them. I need to get off the dime and do something. Posted by: jewells45 at April 07, 2012 06:06 PM Yeah, I know what you mean. Our last two houses wound up fully decorated (by me, not some fancy schmancy designer) EXCEPT for the master bedroom. Last place we lived with bright yellow walls in the bedroom for four years. I hated them. I'm having a hard time, but in my defense the room only got painted a week ago. It's a pale peach, as is the master bath (which has pretty sandy colored travertine flooring and garden tub surround). Our bed is a plain upholstered sand/tan. We have a few pictures we really like that are of Portugal and Greece, the latter being a photograph showing the deep blue ocean, bright pink bougainvelias, and white stucco walls. So I was thinking using whites, sands, and blues as my main colors... kind of beachy. It's hard to find ready made drapes (except on the web), so we went to a design place. Tons of fabrics - sort of overwhelming really - so we brought a couple home. But I don't want to spend a fortune because I'd like some money left for new bedding!

360 349 Well, getting ready to go out to dinner. My bestie is taking me to dinner for my birthday. ----- Happy birthday, jewells!

361 On Good Friday at work we had what was billed as an Easter potluck. Now I'm not a practicing anything but it still struck me as weird and a bit tasteless. I toyed with pointedly bringing in a sashimi platter but ended up just avoiding the whole thing.

Even though I'm not a practicing anything, I do abstain from all meat save fish during the entire Lent -- a weird impulse of my living history proclivities. This year was a little harder than usual since I was also steering clear of cheese and fried foods per doctor's request, which eliminated old fallbacks like french fries and vegetarian-pizza-by-the-slice at the cafeteria for lunch. Just bringing in the leg of lamb destined to be roasted tomorrow, and ohhhhhh I am so looking forward to being a terrestrial carnivore again! Roasted along with new potatoes and onions and (added in the last 5 minutes) whole mushrooms, served forth with asparagus and a spring greens salad tossed with fig balsamic vinegar and olive oil. And for desert two minicakes from an absurdly posh baker, the type that does exquisite wedding cakes for insane prices as his main business, but happens to have a little cafe on the side.

Don't if anybody reads this. Just typing it stokes the happy anticipatory tingles. Meat! MEEEEAT!

362 363 On Good Friday at work we had what was billed as an Easter potluck. Now I'm not a practicing anything but it still struck me as weird and a bit tasteless. ------ Yeah, hubby's work held a large gala dinner on Friday. Plus, it was celebrating Latinos, which seemed doubly odd since I assume that a decent percentage of the Latinos are Catholic, even here in Utah. 'Hope you enjoy your meaty goodness tomorrow!

363 Here is my entry in the famous encounters category:

I shot a line of skeet with Robert Stack back when I was in high school down in LA.

I am a contractor in the SF bay area so I have gotten to work for a few music industry names: Tom Johnston (doobie bros.), Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the dead, also Robert Hunter song writer for the dead.  My favorite is Tom Waits and his lovely wife Kathleen, very nice people.

Happy Easter and Joyful Passover to all!

364 I have a question. Bobby Petrino, who is a coach for something, crashed his motorcycle and wanted the accident kept quiet. Why?

Posted by: Ronster at April 07, 2012 03:55 PM (XkVVw)

365 For full ten years I had material I wanted to run up as drapes in the living room, but I couldn't sew (and I had tried in my day, I assure you) and the friend who volunteered to do so kept forgetting in her usual easily distracted manner. For full ten years I stared at the grey cheap plastic vertical blinds the place had been furnished with by the parsimonious prior owner, watching as one by one a slat would tear away from its hanging bit and fall to the floor, wrestling with the mechanism to pull it open or shut until it seized up but it didn't really matter anymore because half the slats were gone by then. Then finally I had enough and found another sempstress. Now I've got the crewel-work hangings edged on the bottom with a wide border of green that I saw in my head all those years ago, and it just makes me so happy to be in that room. It's absurd how much a difference they make, but then I shouldn't be surprised that the cozy English cottage feel never quite materialized as long as grotty gaptoothed plastic hung in my window.

366 How about my asshole neighbor who never sweeps up after he edges & mows his lawn. He mowed it today for the first time this YEAR. Now my formerly tidy for Easter front yard looks like SHIT. Oh and they won't top & trim their tree which is now 1/2 on my side of the fence. Guess where the bulk of the leaves land and who has to pick them up?

368 Went shooting out at Fort Dix this Morning with 2 of my kids and my foster son and his brother.  4 rifles, 4 pistols, and the neighboring table blasting away with a Dragunov.

Stopped for pie at Emerys' on the way back.

Hmmmm.  Pie.

Dawn service tomorrow out on the river.

369 Petrino is head football coach at Arkansas.  His motorcycle accident included a female employee half his age riding on the back of the bike.  Oops.

And for my Easter dinner tonight, made crab cakes from scratch, tuna steak and a salad.  Dessert is about to be strawberry shortcake.  Yum!
