Academy Awards Thread
— Dave in Texas

Because none of us gives a rats ass about them, and in fact it will irritate you all that I even put up a post about it.

All that hate's gonna burn you up kid.

What's your favorite movie and why? Like I care. It's your favorite movie, not my favorite movie. Besides you have to classify them in genres and stuff, like "dramas" or "cartoons". If you just have one favorite movie you're a window-licker and nobody needs to hear you talk about it.

I'd tell you mine but I don't even like movies. Cept for Patton, or Dr. Strangelove. I liked those. I kinda liked Star Wars when Han shot first.

That's about it I guess. Oh, the chicks will want to talk about what the women are wearing. Go for it. Be catty.

Let me say this for the lurking liberals and pantywaists who despise the military.

My favorite movie was one I stared in where we compatriots fired WP into a Vietnamese village and burned it to the ground.  Oh yeah, we also sent a big round of whoop-ass to the idiots who fired on us.   No apologies, just a steady diet of death from the sky.

14 There used to be a porn theatre on 42nd Street (how odd does that sound, "used to be") that showed the same 3 films: Wet Nurses, Hot Sluts and Horny Teenagers Every month they just swapped out the adjectives: Hot Nurses, Horny Sluts and Wet Teenagers. This went on for about 20 years.

I like the new Borgia series on netflix by the guys from the wire. Liked it better than the Jeremy Irons version. Oh.. movies you see at the thee-ater. No, don't bother now that the kids have grown. I don't remember when I last went to one. TV shows are still pretty awesome, movies - meh.

I like Patton, too. Let's just give it another award for still being awesome.

Movies would be good if they weren't all made in Hollywood by pedophile lefties who fill them with propoganda and want to end you and your way of life and turn your kids into their sex slaves.

Not when I do it.

Okay favorite movies.  Number one is Some Like It Hot.  Marilyn in those dresses is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy.  This is followed by Pulp Fiction, The Thin Man, Infernal Affairs, Hard Boiled, Leon, The Incredibles, Die Hard, The Princess Bride and Dark City.

Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD 2012 at February 26, 2012 03:48 PM (Gk3SS)

19 Mr. Sefton..please.. your choices are, to put it politely, the "Roger Corman" versions of porn. Taking "mainstream Films" and then turning them into Porn versions are like Puns...The lowest form of Wit. "Debbie Does Dallas" was an original themed movie that had a plot, casting, sets and yes, use of actual film with first class cinematography. Next thing you will be telling me is that "free" Youporn is superior to Ace's favorite site. "Brazzers". I fart in your general direction....

You: Um, happy, I guess, but leave room for a sequel and don't make it totally happy. PC: Ok, it's ready. Do you want to watch it now? You: After dinner, in my room. I'll tell you when to start it. 51 Favorite Movies.. hmm..

African Queen (No, it's not about a gay black guy, you pervs..)
True Grit - the original, not the remake
The Bells of St. Mary - Bing Crosby at his finest, bar none..
The Outlaw Josie Wales

As to anything more modern, well, not so much to choose from there, but probably:

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - my youngest still refers to this as the "talking tree movie" - she loved that part as a child.

Firefly - really enjoyed the TV show as well - nothing better than a good action flick that can make fun of itself.

Followed by Godfather 1 & 2, Fargo, Dr. Strangelove, LOTR series, Raising Arizona, Groundhog Day, Sunset Boulevard, Rear Window, Psycho... lots more I can't think of right now.

But Mulholland rules them all.

Liberals always say we have to be "tolerant", when what they really  WANT is  unquestioning acceptance and accommodation.

Here's what I have to say to them:

"Tolerance" means we agree to disagree, and as long as you don't shove your agenda in my face/down my throat, we'll get along just fine.

You start telling me that I HAVE to accept your lifestyle choices and/or make accommodations for your peccadilloes means that we are going to be in conflict.

Tolerance is a two-way street.

Wah wah were poor and we need money.  I used to be a bad guy but I'm reformed.  Now I raise pigs and talk about what a bad guy I used to be.

Look at how enlightened I am now though, my best friend is black and married to a native american.  Gosh, I' so enlightened.

But I have to go kill this guy.  Wah Wah.  Don't want to, but need the money.

Long moralistic hand wringing

2 minutes of action

More long moralistic hand wringing

2 more minutes of action

Again, long period of moralistic hand wringing - followed by a few more minutes of action in which everyone gets shot...

Everyone but the two guys who deserve it the most, the sissy loudmouth writer W.W. Beauchump - and the sniveling cowardly deputy, the two guys I really wanted to see take a bullet live.

Wah wah, more hand wringing, the end.

Ughh.. pass.

I haven't, for a couple reasons. One is that I like knowing that it will work when the power is out, the cell towers are down, etc. etc. (and yes, I have two old fashioned phones that work without power).

I also don't like holding my cell phone for long conversations and don't find the quality as good as the land line, even with a new phone. Instapundit linked a device that holds your cell phone and lets you use one or more handsets around the house.

And I have had the same cell phone number for 10 years, so it's a diff. area code and I'd probably want to make it a local number if it was our "home" number.

In keeping with an idea possibly originated by H. Allen Smith in a little book called Rhubarb, I would like to suggest some changes to the show format.

First, booby-trap the aisle, and turn out the lights when the winner has to walk to the stage.  Put the traps at different levels so that some of them are actually booby traps.

Second, insert small amounts of explosives into random statuettes.

Third, electric shocks for the host every time a joke falls flat.

Fourth, you know how they use random pretty people to fill seats so that the hall never looks less than full?  Give some of them rabid Rottweilers and then dare anyone to try to cross in front of the seat-filler to pick up an award.

Fifth, for anyone who is afraid of the Rotties, toss the award to them.  Whoever catches it gets it, complete with his own name engraved for whatever the real winner did.

You get the idea.

Princess Bride is still a guilty pleasure, I must admit - probably because I'm old enough that I remember all of those fairy tale stories that it pokes fun at, and I have to give serious props to Andre the Giant.  I had been a fan for years, I remember meeting him as a kid.  To see him act in a movie in which he really more or less played himself.. well, hard to beat for me.

Unless "Transformers 3" was nominated-and I'm a bit doubtful that it was-I haven't seen a single Best Picture nominee this year. Part of the reason is my wife and I had a little girl, the other part is that most movies are contrived shit these days.

I love Adam Sandler movies.  The Wedding Singer is his best.  Steve Buscemi singing at the end was to die for.  Used to watch a lot of Indie films but even those are trashed now.

Actually, come to think of it,  I really liked all the Bourne movies and that one with Liam Neeson where he tracks down his daughter.  Also thought that  movie with Denzel Washington where he bodyguards Mark Anthony's kid and dies in the end was superb.

I have a hard time with Ganster movies - I knew some people who had been terrorized by real life gansters.  So I don't glamorize these scumbags myself, nor do I envy there life style.  I don't see them as heroes.

I remember the end scene from Goodfella's where Hill is whining about how he has to just live his life as an average schnook from now on, to which I kept thinking, you know what?  If there were any justice in the world you'd be buried in an unmarked grave next to one of your many victims, you piece of shit.

The version of this that I saw was not by Clint Eastwood; but it did in actual point of fact feature two mules for sister Sarah. I think it was filmed in Tijuana. All you need to do to go full cell is make sure you keep your cell phone charged, and don't leave it anywhere. But depending on it completely works very well. Also, I transferred my landline phone number of over 20 years to my cell phone so I didn't have to notify anyone of a change in phone number. It has been great.

I think my favorite movie is "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World."  I think I first saw this at the drive-in in the very early 1970s (I was 6 or seven at the time).  The whole movie has a great rhythm to it.  Plus love all the old stars in it.  You know its going to be great movie when Jimmy Durrante's character as he dies kicks a rusty bucket down the hill.

It is shame nothing even similar is coming out of hollywood today.

Generally, even if you can imagine how rotten life would have to be where doing that kind of thing in public was your last viable option, and then consider how attractive (or not so) such a life would leave you, you would still be shocked at how unappealing the whole thing is. It's like 2 girls 1 cup, but with added animal cruelty and even less sexual appeal.

2001?

Pompous, plodding, over-thought, underacted, boringly filmed.

But aside from that? great flick.

376 Yes, Dark City is good. A flick from the 80s called Resurrection is pretty good. It's about a lady who gets healing powers from a near death experience.

381 "I also think that "The Searchers" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" were the Duke's greatest films."

Was always kind of partial to El Dorado myself, you know the one where Robert Mitchum plays the drunken sheriff and John Wayne and James Caan help him arrest the brother of the local cattle baron that owns the town.

So much better than Rio Lobo, in which Dean Martin plays the drunken sheriff and John Wayne and Ricky Nelson help him arrest the brother of the local cattle baron that owns the town.. lol

Best part about a John Wayne movie, you watch it just to watch John Wayne being John Wayne.  Though honestly to of my favorite Duke movies - Big Jake, and Hellfighters.

385 Casablanca. Hmm. It is good but it's not the kind of good that you usually associate with a movie. I had never seen it and was quite skeptical--it was old, the actors were unattractive and I never thought much of Bergman. My then boyfriend and now husband insisted I see it when they played it on campus. Somehow, the great love interrupted by the war touched me and the terrible price that they had to pay because of the war, their separation and loss, was so tragic that I cried for the rest of the evening. The movie makes you feel the loss and the sacrifice.

I can see why the sacrifice that they made for the war effort, for her marriage, wouldn't make sense to many people today. The character it took to make those decisions was something to be admired.

I've never liked Bogart. My husband loves Bergman--I don't see it--but I do see why the movie touched millions.

436 The first Star Wars movie, remember it is over 35 years old. I saw it one day as my car was being worked on. I was down in the Hollywood area and went into a huge theater in Westwood (Hollywood area). Only about 20 of us in this huge theater, as Star Wars was not yet a huge deal and had only been out for a day or two. I was simply overwhelmed, first truly modern Sci Fi movie with production values beyond Plan 9 from Outer Space. All the rest of the Star War movies are worthless.

I did enjoy Citizen Kane, a lot.  The editing is chronological, but takes about five passes over the same story, getting deeper every time.  Even Andrew Brietbart will never get under the skin of media people the way Orson Welles gauled Hearst.  "Rosebud" was what he called his girlfriend's cl**.

Casino Royale:  If you make other Bond movies look thoughtless and silly in comparison, you've done it right.

Australia:  Should have been warned off by the ADD addled movies by the same director.  Pleasantly surprised, he made a movie with a very solid story structure.

Kill Bill 1 and 2:  Tarintino respects how hard it is to be an action director.

That shot at the end of the movie, with John Wayne standing in the doorway, just plain masterful.  Holy crap, such a great, great movie.

My Favorite Film ever is cool Hand Luke.

Best Coen brothers movie for me was Blood Simple.

Liked how the key clue in Citizen Kane about what rosebud meant was when Kane as a child kept screaming dubesor, dubesor when he was out playing in the snow.

I enjoyed Munich...Mrs Meanie and I engage in the kind of nightmarish trauma sex on Saturdays depicted in the...um, climax of the film.  Wonder if it will produce a child.

The King's Speech...the king's speech itself was wonderful filmmaking.

Started watching movies on TV when I was about 8 years old.  My sister and I got home from school (Catholic) earlier than our friends (public) so we watched the daily movie.  Must have seen every movie made in the 30's, 40's, and 50's.  Can you imagine?  Every day we were mesmerized by these great films.  I remember we were the only ones in our crowd who knew who Jack Benny was.

485 After scrolling through Moron comments to #477, I have to amend my #440 to include as contendahs:

Blues Brothers.

Twelve O'Clock High.

Slap Shot.

Treasure of Sierra Madre.

MIB.

and...

The Third Man. (Orson Wells, Joseph Cotten). Harry Lime is one of the best bad guys ever. And that damn music track sticks in my head to this day.

So... The Third Man is my new 1st runner up. Move everything else down a notch. Add The Blues Brothers to the catch-all runner up winners, which is now called Honorable Mentions.

(not that anyone here gives a damn what an apprentice Moron thinks).

507 523 Best Coen brothers movie for me was Blood Simple. I only saw that once, on TV a long time ago. All I remember about it was one scene where a guy killed somebody and tried to clean up the crime scene. He just kept making it worse and worse as panic set in. It was both hilarious and cringe-inducing. Nobody portrays criminals better than the Coen brothers. They really understand how criminals tend to act on impulse, with no regard for the consequences.

514 @559 Boulder Toilet Hobo - The Texan was not dumb. The Texan had just undergone back surgery, and IMHO the anesthetic was still farking with his brain, and the pain was why he was running out of gas by the end of the debates. I've had surgery 5 times, and that sudden memory hole happens for several months after anesthetic. And the pain wears you out. You get better after about 6 weeks. Tincture of time - nothing else works. HE unfortunately went on the campaign trail too soon after surgery. If you still hold that belief, please explain how he can be dumb and still make an economic environment in which more jobs are created than in all the other 49 states combined?

515 Very few things in life cannot be described or summed up by a quote from "Die Hard" or "Ghostbusters."  Put another way, "Yippie-ki-yay, moth*r-f*ker" is useful in many areas of life.

Walter ([Cary Grant] trying to teach Leslie Caron to fish with her hands):  Hey, here she comes.

Doctor:  "Do you ever get irritated?"

Cassie: "Only when he . . .  Never mind."

521 Most of my favorites have been covered already, but there's one comedy no one has mentioned. I'm not surprised. I think I've met exactly one person who had seen it, and he loved it too.

It's called "Fear of a Black Hat," and it's a rap satire, and it's incredibly funny. It vanished without a trace originally because it was released opposite another rap satire that had Chris Rock in it, and this one had no famous actors (although it did have a guy who was in Revenge of the Nerds, in a very different character).

It's crude and profane, yes, but it's also subtle in many spots, with a lot of clever writing. The whole thing purports to be a documentary by an earnest female grad student. In one scene, the group's lead, Ice Cold, explains to the earnest grad student about the group's name, N!ggas with Hats.

"You see, we've got a whole hat philosophy. Back when there was slaves and stuff, brothers worked out in the hot sun all day, HATLESS. So at the end of the day, they was too tired to rebel against they masters. What we're saying with N!ggas with Hats, is, hey, we got some HATS now, motherfuckers!"

The guy who wrote it also stars. Check it out.
