Adam Carolla on The Biased Media & The Death of Tyler Clementi

Tyler Clementi was that Rutgers kid who killed himself. The media went wild, pretty much lynching the guy accused of "bullying" him.

This New Yorker article is pretty fair and extremely thorough. Maybe too thorough -- it's a long read, but if you read the first three pages you'll probably figure, as I did, "might as well finish it."

The facts demonstrate that Dharun Ravi, the supposed "bully," did in fact commit a crime. That crime? Invasion of privacy in the Third degree.

Wait, no, that's not right, he was never actually able to do that. Tyler Clementi realized that Ravi's computer's webcam was on, so he pulled the plug on the computer.

So Dharun Ravi is guilty of attempted third degree criminal invasion.

Pretty severe charge, eh?

Yeah. Well, because he was overcharged (they added witness tampering!) and of course the hate crimes, he faces a possibility of fifteen to thirty years in prison.

This really wasn't a "hate crime." It was an asshole crime, and it would never have even been a crime if a depressive loner hadn't killed himself.

Dharan Ravi was charged with criminal invasion of privacy (third degree! attempted!) and "bias intimidation," but really they're convicted him of having a roommate who killed himself.

Anyway, Adam Carolla goes off on it, especially media bias, and the media's need for "titillating" stories in which we're all racists and homophobes.

2 I read a pretty fair article a few weeks ago. Basically, the room mate didn't have an issue with the whole gay thing, and Clementi wasn't really upset about the web cam thing. He was, however, quite upset that his parents weren't too thrilled with his life style choices.

11 I read that New Yorker article weeks ago. Definitely a great take on the case, and it makes you feel for Ravi, jackass though he is. One interesting thing that came out in he article was that Tyler thought his mom was pretty cold to Jim after he came out. No doubt that played into his last decisions.

86 I'm just dreading the day that a gay person goes into a church, hears a sermon that's less than gay-friendly, kills him/herself and the loved ones come after the church. Or some poor kid whose gone to youth group at the local church since grade school comes out as gay in high school, is the subject of a well-meaning intervention/prayer circle/something and then jumps off a bridge, and the law or the public school decides to prosecute that as bullying. To me, it seems like Ravi was worried about his stuff getting stolen from the person visiting. When he got to the galfirends room, and saw the other stuff going on the web cam, he turned the camera off.

I don't think Ravi cared that his "cell mate" was gay, but it seems that it worried Clementi and his folks more.

94 kbdabear, it's really been a truly eye opening experience for me, as i know that i've heard other cases in this manner periodically although i did not really pay attention to these type of cases.
what has alarmed me greatly is not only the media out with their daggers , but the intent to get frothing crowds moving in a less then peaceful fashion against fellow americans.
not to say that Obama and Holder's lack of dragging in BP for putting a bounty on the head of another american, (death sentence for usre).
I feel like i'm not living in america anymore, it's quite discomfiting.

He got offered a deal for 600 hours of community service, no prison time, and turned it down. So now the prosecutor is stacking on charges in order to get a ridiculous prison time.
