12 Giants to win for sentimental reasons. Ravens to win cause I'd like to see Tom Brady slink home...

13 Many moons ago when I lived in MA my friends and I went out to a club to have a few brews and scope out the babes. As we were filing in guess who started approaching the entrance? The Patriots cheerleaders. I got to hold the door for them and watch them climb the stairs to the door. They were not repulsive.

18 If Newt Gingrich can win in South Carolina by playing ugly, then the Ravens and 49ers have a damn good shot.

With that said, bELIeve and it will happen: Giants to the Super Bowl.

The way to bet the Pats is keep the offense on the bench. If the Ravens establish a running game. Also, the Ravens coach is gonna have to sit Ray Lewis a lot...

45 Baltimore's defense, while still good, is aging. if Schaub (or even Lienart) had played, the Texans beat them easily. Brady will absolutely light them up. Houston' defense physically whipped their offense last week, and that may linger.

Actually, Denver was 9-8 when the Pats played them.  Also during the season, at the time they played these teams, they beat San Diego (1-0), Oakland (2-1), Jets (5-3), and Denver (8-5).  But, I'm sure that won't hold much sway.

I heard this yesterday and wondered if Philbin (formerly of the Packers) was taking a shot at the Packers or calling out some of the Dolphins players.

"We then must develop them into a team that performs at an extremely high level on a consistent basis. Our team will consist of men who care more about winning and their teammates than they do about individual statistics."

Posted by: Brock O'Bama at January 22, 2012 10:41 AM (/WZ6r)

101 70 - We're always lucky whenever two really good teams end up meeting in the Super Bowl because it seldom happens. Teams that have great years are not always great by playoff time. Packers are a classic example, they limped to the end of a season that saw their defense not being able to stop anybody from scoring. And when their offense came out last Sunday, cold and stale, they were doomed. In spite of their record, they were not a great team.

Hate to burst the love bubbles of all you dreamers but I have a question for ya.

Why do you think a cement footed slug like Tom Brady is so successful in the NFL?  Much more than he was in college.

On a related thought, can any of you fan-boys define what is considered holding in the present day NFL?  You can't because no such thing exists.  Sure, there is some bullshit definition written down somewhere in some NFL rulebook, but we all know that is not what gets called, and more importantly not called, in any given game.  The refs call what they want, when they want.  Usually they pick very telling moments of the game in which to interject their 'calls'.  And don't get me started on the scam that is Official Review.

The answer to the question above is that he has all day to stand back there to throw.  Are all his o-lineman just that much better than everyone else?  No.

I gave up on NFL 'football' many years ago because I think it is more akin to Pro Wrestling on Grass.  The WWWNFL as it were.  It's real, isin't it?

Posted by: ontherocks at January 22, 2012 12:25 PM (ZJCDy)

304 There is no doubt that all of the NFL's rules have been tweaked to favor a specific type of play. It hasn't been true that running was the equal of passing in forever, but it's just silly now. You just do not need a good running game. Sure it's nice. But it's not needed. You also don't even need a good defense anymore. All you need is passing. All of this favors a specific style of play and thus a specific type of athlete (and a specific type of quarterback). If there is a competitor league to the NFL in the future, I hope they think of this. You cannot out-compete the NFL at the NFL's style of play. All of the best players for that style of play will go to the NFL. But you could set up a rulebook in which the option was a viable, erm, option, and which passing wasn't so favored that the rushing game became a viable offensive strategy again. And in that way you could claim, sort of honestly, that your players are not really second- or third-best. They're the best at a particular style, like NFL players are best at the pro-set West Coast passing offense. It would also provide a genuine alternative. More of a college style of play, just professional.

The Patriots lost a first round draft pick over it and didn't even appeal it.  The rest of the league considered it a "slap on the wrist" and the NFL sealed all the information they had about it to the public to avoid embarrassing the league.

First of all, for the small number of people who are like this, fine, but I think that makes for a pretty boring person. Are there no other interests? Politics is great, but it's not the sum and entirety of the human experience, is it? My other observation is that some people aren't all politics all the time themselves, but they want to encourage *other* people to be, so they can influence the agitation to occur round the clock. But then that's a case of do as i say, not as I do. We spend all week trashing Obama. Obama sucks. Can we never go off script for a day or two? And BeckoningChasm's just not right. The story is not flaming-skull worthy, unless there's more to it. And if there is, then maybe it gets the skull. I guess I could pretend. But I dont' see the point. I wouldnt' be fooling anyone. They secretly filmed a closed-door walkthrough of their Super Bowl opponent in the week before the game, then game-planned against it.

The NFL investigated this (and other incidents) and punished them by taking away a first round draft pick.  The Patriots DID NOT appeal the decision and the NFL sealed all the evidence they had to the public (this was apparently part of the deal), including the forfeited tape from the Rams walkthrough.

417 I hate that fake-touchdown rule, that "crossing a plane" thing. I think you need to cross on the field of play. I think football has to examine all of these abstract, technical type rules and simplify them according to simple notions: If it looks like a fumble, it should be a fumble. If it looks like it's not a touchdown, it should not be a touchdown. Rules which deliver counter-intuitive results are bad rules.

Lincoln is really upset about having his team being accused of the cheating that they actually did.  Flinging accusations at everything else to attempt to deflect the fact that they cheated.  Yeah using steroids is cheating too.  And you know what happens when the guy gets caught?  He gets suspended fined and maybe worse.  And sometimes they even appeal the penalty because they might not have done it.

The Patriots did not appeal the penalty.  And the penalty they received would sure look excessive if it was just a case of the film guy being out of position for 7 and a half minutes.  And it would also be pretty silly for Bill Belichek to receive a fine for this "accident" committed by somebody else, but he did.

Posted by: buzzion at January 22, 2012 01:12 PM (GULKT)

419 Does any part of the player have to touch the endzone? Or just having the ball break the plane while the player runs outside is OK?

Posted by: ace at January 22, 2012 01:13 PM (nj1bB)

424 Pats defense is soft. When Brady is not hanging up 4 or 5 tds in the first half and the defense can tee off, the Patriots can't hang. The don't seem to like trench warfare type games. Good for Baltimore for hanging tough. Lots of game left, though.

The one I really hate is the ridiculous over-interpretation on "possessions" and "football moves" and crap like that, especially in the end zone.  If a guy catches the friggin' ball and his feet or ass or knee or elbow are down, that's a TD.  But I've seen several called back this year because the guy didn't "complete the catch." WTF?  If he's running it across the goal line all his has to do is get the tip in (heh) for an instant, but if it's a catch then the catch has to be some sort of fifteen second affair?

Rules which deliver counter-intuitive results are bad rules.

Which reminds me, wasn't the NFL toying around with putting some sort of GPS system with a chip in the ball for some kind of super-accurate way of determining the ball's position of the field a couple of years ago? Seems like that'd take a lot of the guesswork out of spots and cut way down (or eliminate) reviews.

Instead, you chose to sleep past noon while allowing a crew of unpaid, unprofessional hackneyed cob-loggers to fill in with half baked threads.

That's not how Romney earned his billions at Bain. That's not how Herman Cain became the CEO of the National Restaurant Association and president of Godfather's Pizza. That's not how Rush Limbaugh became the most listened to radio talk show host in America.

I guess some free market espousing conservatives really aren't as truly driven as their favorite examples.

Ray Lewis was definitely involved in the death of a man. It occurred outside the confines of an NFL field and was therefore the responsibility of the justice system to punish him. They failed - not for the first time.

Bill Belichick illegally filmed opposing NFL teams for years. Was told to stop it once, but continued until caught red-handed in a opening season game with the Jets. Claimed his dog ate his homework and he didn't realize that what he had continued to do was wrong. Got a slap on the wrist fine and lost a first-round draft pick because the new NFL commissioner was and is almost as incompetent as the SCOAMF. The new commissioner also destroyed all the film evidence so that no one else could see what actually happened. Pats fans, be very glad a woman could not be commissioner, because I would have had the Pats forfeit that Jets game and made them ineligible for the post-season that year, but they went 18-0 until the Giants beat them in the Super Bowl (karma is a bee-yitch!).

Outstanding sportsmanship and integrity? Hardly. Do both men win games on the field? Yes.

But I won't apologize or lose sleep that some might think I'm a 'murderer-lover' because I want to see Bill B beaten in the most humiliating ways possible. Because I'm not rooting for Ray - I'm rooting against Bill. I t matters not to me who the opposing team is. Rooting against people we don't like is as much a part of sports as total fandom.

And I'm nothing if not stupid and retarded for stating the truth.

454 Lincolntf, You should just laugh it off. Yeah they cheated, and it got dealt with. But if anyone thinks that the great success that Brady and company have had over the years is all due to cheating, they are delusional. Most fans would give their left nut to have their team be as good as the Pats have been. Chalk it up to jealousy.

457 Seems to me a simple thing to do is to require the players to hand the ball to the ref after a score.  It'd also cut down on excessive celebration penalties.

466 Which reminds me, wasn't the NFL toying around with putting some sort of GPS system with a chip in the ball for some kind of super-accurate way of determining the ball's position of the field a couple of years ago? Seems like that'd take a lot of the guesswork out of spots and cut way down (or eliminate) reviews.

Heh Charlie Finley tried this on baseballs in order to get rid of the subjective ball/strike call back in the 70s.  One of the major problems was that the baseballs cost about a thousand bucks each.

Baseball could use some version of that Hawk-Eye system they use in tennis, which just uses a bunch of cameras, and doesn't need a special ball. Football's trickier because the ball can get hidden from view.

505 Ace wrote, They should look at these rules with the idea, "Putting aside our hypertechnical rules, what would the average viewer think happened here?"

Watching the rules evolve over the last {mumble} decades, I think that's exactly what the NFL did. Step by step, as slow-motion technology and cameras have multiplied they've applied common sense to each new aspect of "possession".

Many times I've been outraged by a call, but forced to admit the underlying "common sense" works for the "average fan." Not surprising, since that's the NFL's bread and butter.

Now, the "tuck rule" is another story entirely. W.T.F. is all I can say.

706 I was just about to say that Harbaugh should have challenged that, but then I remembered that inside of 2 minutes, challenges come from 'upstairs' (refs). They showed Harbaugh on the sidelines running down the sidelines and I think shouting at the refs and then throwing his arms down in frustration. I think the refs on the field told him that he couldn't challenge and that the upstairs refs were not gonna review it.

@ 519

Then explain possesion in the end zone vis-a-vis 'common sense', Ace.  Either the end zone is sacrosanct or it is not.  A player just breaks the goal line with the the tip of the ball.  Touchdown.  The play is dead the instant the ball breaks the goal line.

A receiver catches the ball in the end zone a a second later a defender strips the ball out.  Incomplete.  The receiver cleary caught the ball.  Possesion.  Why is the play not over at that second?  Didn't complete the catch.  Sure he did, it was just stripped right after that.  Why isn't the play dead the instant the player catches the ball like it is when the ball breaks the plain?  Two sets of rules for the same situation.  Either the play is over the instant a player posseses the ball across the plain of the goal line or it is not.  Like Heideger's cat.

718 Why do the Pats specialize in unnecessary extreme stress? They overproduced last week and just barely win this week. Posted by: eman at January 22, 2012 06:23 PM Yep, Brady had a really off game. The D saved the Pats today. When Brady missed a wide open Gronkowski for the TD in the 1st QTR (after Ed Reed completely bit on the play action), you knew he was off his game. Go figure that it's the much maligned Patriots D that helps them get back to the Super Bowl. Speaking of Gronk, I didn't see his injury, what happened? Ankle?

719 729 It's about establishing possession. Two feet down, ball in hands. You have to do both. He didn't have both feet down before the strip. Not a catch.

720 Jim Nantz is a big, leering fairy. Sounds like owner Kraft had tipped a few eh? Cmon GIANTS!!!!

721 Posted by: ole scratch at January 22, 2012 06:23 PM Two feet on ground at same time as possession. Posted by: eman at January 22, 2012 06:25 PM Beat me to it. Ole scratch, just think if a player catches a ball, gets one foot down and then the 2nd foot comes down out of bounds. That's not a TD. Same applies here. He got one foot down and then before the 2nd foot came down, the ball was stripped from his possession. No TD.

722 732 - Yes, ankle. It almost looked Theissman-like, but he was walking fine afterwards, so no break, I'm sure.

723 The post-game award of the Conference Championship is such an anti-climax. Just a hold-over from when the AFL and NFL were separate leagues.

724 Well, I wanted a Harbaugh vs Harbaugh Super Bowl. Now that the Ravens messed that up, I'm rooting for a Patriots vs Giants Super Bowl (even though I really like the 49ers because of their great D) to see if Brady can exact revenge on the Giants for 2007.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at January 22, 2012 02:28 PM (vUK/h)

725 Pats didn't win, the Ravens lost. There's a difference, and if that's how the Pats play in a couple of weeks, they will get their asses handed to them.

726 Srsly, no new thread for Ace's team's game?

He's still searching for a giants cheerleader.

There's no revenge on karmic justice.

I think she's a gal who appeared for a few episodes of Frasier as the assistant to Frasier's evil agent, Bebe.

Aaaaand, butterfingers!

You don't need anything in the football, modern surveying equipment could determine the ball's position to the millimeter.

Linesman, however, belong to a union, so you can kiss that use of technology goodbye forever.

740 291 The Pats earned their rep because of things like the tuck rule and the snow plow incident.  Their owner is a prick.  Watching a Pats game is a lot like watching an NBA game -- it's the Pats plus refs versus their opponents.

Posted by: Y-not says Woot for Newt at January 22, 2012 04:19 PM (5H6zj)

Earned their rep? For a proper call based on a stupid rule? The Raiders could've still won the "tuck call" game, as they led even after the "tuck call" and could have won the game in overtime. Perhaps Vinatieri kicking two field goals, including one for 45 yards, in a blizzard was part of the reason for the win.

Your complaint is akin to Patriots fans complaining because the refs should've ruled that Eli Manning was in the grasp of the Patriots defense on that ridiculous play in the 2008 Super Bowl in which David Tyree caught the pass against his helmet. If Manning were ruled in the grasp, the Patriots likely win that Super Bowl and end up 19-0 for the season. Was Manning in the grasp? It was as close as it could be without the whistling being blown but the refs made the right call saying he wasn't in the grasp ... just like the refs properly interpreted the "tuck rule" in the Pats-Raiders game.

The snow plow game? That was 30 years ago and was a regular-season game. It wasn't exactly a playoff game or game with major implications. Anyway, how do you hold that against the organization?

As for their owner being a "prick," if you met the man you wouldn't feel that way. The guy saved football in New England by buying the team. He also built an organization that has been a perennial contender, which was certainly not true before he purchased them. He also does a lot for multiple charities. Just because you don't like the team he owns, doesn't make him a "prick."

I have no problem with people not liking the Patriots -- there are plenty of teams I don't like in all professional sports -- but you look like a complete a--hole tossing out irrational insults and accusations like this.

Anyway, have fun yelling at the TV in two weeks when the hated Patriots are playing in another Super Bowl. I figure you'll call Brady a "fag" and Belichick a "prick" at least once every 5-10 minutes during the game. Too many sports fans, like yourself, come across like members of the OWS movement, with your irrational hatred against the success of others simply because their franchise is not located near where you live.
