Afternoon Open [Truman North]

It's time for one. Per Vic. And since we're morons, what could be better than mixing severe intoxication with spring-loaded DIY weapons?

17 It's a real-life example of the signature weapon in the video game Assassin's Creed.  Wherein the Assassins are the libertarians and the Templars are the statists.  And they battle behind the scenes throughout history.  The next entry, out at the end of the year, will be set in revolutionary America.  I'm looking forward to reading about it and maybe trying it.

22 Egypt's Islamists to play key role in constitution Published: 03.17.12, 18:59 / Israel News Egypt's Islamist-dominated parliament has overwhelmingly voted in favor of ensuring that its own lawmakers will comprise the bulk of a panel that will write the country's constitution. Many Christian and liberal lawmakers are wary of Islamists taking too prominent a role. lawmakers voted that 50 members of the 100-member panel drafting the first constitution after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak must come from the parliament. The Islamists, who dominate the parliament, want a formidable presence on the panel to ensure a strong voice in the process. (AP) Egypt-Israel Peace? 25 Today we got our first home-delivered (in North Carolina) Weekend Wall St. Journal (one of 8 or 9 free year-long subscriptions we "earned" with expired Dividend Miles from USAir). I feel like I'm reading a newspaper written for adults by adults for the first time since I was delivering the Evening Gazette back in 1982.
Don't know exactly how the subscription works, we get 221 papers (including the Weekend edition which covers both Sat. and Sun.) over a 365-day period starting today. If you can get a cheap subscription, do it. I've gotten more, and much better written, real news from just today's paper than I would from a month of the local rag, so I'd say it's worth your time to find a local bookstore that sells the Weekend one and make it part of your routine.

Figures. Just as I post on the last thread, it ends. So copy/paste...

Late to here, even though I've been up since early this am.

Happy Saint Patricks Day to y'all. Lot's of stuff going on here in KC, including a big parade downtown that's being televised. Also free concerts afterwards.

I tend to avoid that kind of thing. As has been pointed out, amatuer hour. I'd much rather stay home and drink a toast or two to my ancestors. I have some nice Irish Ale to do that with.

Oh, and I don't know if any of you saw this mentioned on the ONT, but our occasional Co-blogger TMI3rd will be singing the National Anthem at the Soccer Game here tonight. It's televised, so I'm gonna try to catch it. He and I have met, and he's a great guy with a lot on his plate. Plus he has some great insights about this here blog.

Wish him the best!

@Chemjeff,

Holy WTF! I'm kinda glad I didn't go now. I figured that there'd be some parlimentary procuduring on either side.  Frankly I only wanted to go to make sure that the PaulBots didn't send sleeper delegates to the convention (I was planning on just offering a rule that they be bound for at least 3 votes).  But then got lazy.

StL County went by Township so we'd only be sending I think 2 delegates total anyway (I think each county got 25 to the state convention or somesuch.) so it all seemed futile.

80 I just ventured into the comments sludge at WaPo to counter the raving libtards' screaming about the army Sgt. who killed the civilians.

There's this little gem over there:

I looks like the US military is paying a bunch of losers to infest this forum to fend off any truth or expose about their evil nature. They now want to spin the whole thing into some kind of noble thing to do in killing innocent women and children. Now, they are protecting the wife and children of the murderer. By doing that, the US military is admitting that they indeed enjoy sending out insane soldiers to kill innocent women and children, as long as they are not white Americans.

90 "It seems to me that the Ron Paul guys don't really understand how power works. The people around me complained that the outcome was already pre-ordained - well yes, that was true for the most part, because the Ron Paul guys apparently think that they can just show up at a caucus on one day and attempt to change the whole thing," A lot of people don't understand the concept of a political party. That the party itself nominates a candidate, then all of the voters get to vote in the general election. Thus we end up with abominations like open primaries.

Posted by: nerdygirl at March 17, 2012 09:55 AM (Npzzl)

91 Beggars can't be choosers, Jimbo. Running a Republican in MA who can actually win an election to Congress is quite rare these days. Scott Brown sucks, but his presence in the Senate is worth it -- just for the implications (e.g., the symbolic value of taking Dead Kennedy's seat).

93 That's a cute hidden blade.  I hope folks don't take it seriously as a weapon.  It didn't send a sheath out and then extend a blade from there, so it leaves the hand very vulnerable.  It's also hard to see a time when one would be useful for self defense.  It's a weapon for attacking unsuspecting people who have their guard way down.  It's not much for defense.

Even in the games the hidden blades aren't that great for attacking someone in self defense.  They are good for chasing down someone who is fleeing, or better yet, killing someone who was just minding his own business.

I hope that SSgt. Bales gets himself a damn good lawyer....and uses the fact that he was forced into redeployment, at a time when he was in dire need of time to decompress from the accumulated stress of years of combat.

His lawyer should also tie in the recent event of the SecDef feeling the need to disarm the troops around him. .....I mean, that seems like an admission of the stress level of those troops, if the SecDef is afraid to be in their company, and is afraid of being near them when they are armed.

Also, how stupid do you have to be to think that the people running the military WANT a horrific scandal like this.

But that reason is bad enough. 2) We really don't know what he thought of this last deployment or what his mental state was. 121 The British government is not worried about an Islamist government in Egypt and believes such a government would adopt a realistic approach towards Israel, according to a senior UK diplomat. Islamists are aware that they have to concentrate on fundamental issues, such as education, public sector pay, social inclusivity and public health, according to the diplomat. “I find that a lot of the people we have been talking to who have got into parliament are well aware that those are the main challenges and if they do not get those right they will never be voted in again,” he added. The UK has a long history with Egyptian and Arab Islamists, many of whom have been given political refugee status and the right to live permanently on British soil in recent decades. Most of those Islamists have good relations with the UK parliament, academic institutions and UK-based non-governmental organisations. The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood announced its political manifesto during a meeting in London for the first time on 27 October 2007. The diplomat, who is a member of the team dealing with Egypt at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), hinted that it is “unfortunate” that secular parties feel aggrieved that Islamists took the lion's share of parliamentary seats after the revolution. “The important thing is to have democracy. In a few years time the electorate will have the chance to vote for another mix of parliamentarians.” UK policy makers are closely following Islamist statements and policies. “I am not worried about Islamism. What I look for in a future government or parliament is the ability to take the courageous decisions needed to reform and change some of the distortions which crept into the Egyptian economy in recent decades,” the diplomat asserted. “The fundamental judgment on Islamists in parliament and government has to be based on their performance on the big issues facing the country.” Ahram Online understands that consultations are underway between Egyptian and UK authorities on training for new parliamentarians. The diplomat refused to comment on those consultations but he confirmed that the UK “can, on demand, provide support for new (Egyptian) MPs.” He added that some new MPs had expressed interest in how the British Parliament works. Relations with Israel “So far all the Islamist political leaders have been impeccable and absolutely one hundred per cent correct in saying 'we are concerned about a domestic agenda, we don’t want any international problems',” the diplomat said. Islamist presidential candidate Selim El-Awa has said there are "contracts and treaties" between Egypt and Israel, and any dispute between the two states should be resolved by international organisations. UK and other western countries have praised Islamists for their pledge to respect the treaty with Israel. However, many international law experts in these countries have endorsed calls to review the treaty. They say the Egyptian-Israeli treaty, as other international treaties, has clauses which allow it to be reviewed in a legitimate way. Some Middle East analysts in the UK warned that the January 25 Revolution which toppled the Mubarak regime could lead to huge changes in Egyptian policies towards the West and Israel....

Random thoughtÂ…

George Clooney has been all over the place trying to bring attention to the situation in Southern Sudan.  He wants the U.S. or the UN or someone to step in and police the region.  Fat chance.

IMO, some cultures are presently not ready for any form of democracy or self government.  What they need is a strong monarchy to institute some form of order so that there is at least a chance of advancement.

It is my position that people, not governments have the moral responsibility to fill the void.  For centuries, those with wealth and power took the initiative to seize power and rule for the benefit of all.  WouldnÂ’t it be far better if individuals like Bill Gates or Larry Ellison, people with the means to enter an enterprise like this, were to use their money to take control and establish a kingdom instead of pissing their wealth away on useless foundations?

Modern day “Game of Thrones”.

About that guy who snapped...

That whole story struck me as just being something that was odd - what was being reported just didn't "add up" to me.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but when somebody "snaps" don't they just go out into some crowded place, and just start shooting everybody and anybody? The way this story was explained, the guy snuck around at night with some apparent plan, killing specific families, including children. Assuming all that is even accurate, is that the sort of thing that somebody who has "snapped" does? I could be wrong, but it just doesn't "smell" right, to me.

And how come the guy hasn't been charged?

No, but her parents are both Dem operatives in Florida, and one of them just went to jail--can't remember why.

Speaking of Clooney, isn't that the sort of story you have to file under "you just can't make this stuff up?"

I mean, one day he's being flaunted as the honored guest at a state dinner hosted by the top guy in the government.

Then the very next day (or was it 2 days later?), he's being arrested as a public nuisance, giving some snarky comment about "it's apparently illegal" to do what he was doing, when you know damn well they would have given him multiple opportunities to comply before slapping the cuffs on.

To call him a "spoiled brat" would be an understatement.

161 151-I know what you mean, but if Obama treats treaties like the constitution, I fear for this kid. I also know the UCMJ can be twisted to serve a particular purpose under the appropriate thumbscrews. So, the best we can do now is pray for this kid like crazy, and hope saner heads rule. I trust nothing these days.

162 I, too, went to a MO Caucus. Four of 24 attending were Ron Paul. Elected 3 delegates - to go both to District and to State conventions.  No straw poll taken.

It was quite a messy affair, but I don't blame the local party that much. MO last had a caucus in 1996, and we only had 2 guys there who were involved then - and one of them was um (how to say this kindly?) somewhat [elderly].

He went there specifically to get arrested (Clooney) and he was at the White House the day before. (or two days, not sure which). It was deliberate action on his part to "raise awareness" Frankly all I think it raised awareness of was his celebrity douchiness, but I'm not really a fan of him anymore.

What he really needs to save Sudan is a viral video like Kony 2012. Clooney's been doing it wrong.

164 I really, really have trouble reconciling a family man with two young children with a guy who deliberately kills and then burns little kids.

I don't.  History is full of guys like that, both tragic and villainous.

"We have a specific treaty in force now with the Afghans that makes that perfectly clear"

Sounds like you're forgetting who we're talking about. This is the guy who released the New Black Panthers, who had clearly borken the law; the guy who bullied BP into paying money the were not legally obligated to pay, yet had already agreed to pay anyway; the guy who stole from the GM bondholders and gave the equity to the UAW; the guy who made "recess appointments" when the Congress wasn't recessed; and probably and bunch more things I can't even think of, offhand. What makes you think a treaty will suddenly be followed?

Most of the third world hasn't.  What is the saying? "The worst thing we did to the third world was colonialism.  The second worst thing we ever did was decolonialism."

135.....I agree 100%. I want this guy to get all benefits of doubt. All I was saying is lets' be accurate.

I know. .....And I hope you're right about his chances for execution. I'd like to see him end up in therapy for a while, then released.

And you're right....there is a lot we don't know yet. ....We don't even know if it was really him who killed all those civilians. ....The whole thing is odd on several levels.

Well, I hope you're right, but this is a lawless, crown we're dealing with. What makes anyone think they give a crap about whether the military would be upset? You all know that our troops were publicly humiliated when Panetta visited, and Panetta has been talking like just a left-wing tool for Obama on other recent occaisions.

But, again, doesn't this whole story sound a little odd to anyone else? Not the way a guy would usually "snap"?

Colonialism is an option, but it certainly limits how the country could be governed.  Also, it doesnÂ’t lend itself to rapid development because methods and practices are tied to the parent countryÂ’s laws and social standards.

Think of the competition that would ensue if the worldÂ’s multi-billionaires got into the game of seeing who could build the best kingdom.  Also, the logistics would be fairly easy if one had the ability to promise lands and titles to the initial mercenary force in addition to their pay.

Hell, someone might even clean up Haiti with a deal like that.

179 Had a nice little walk and cleared my head of the WaPo vile comments on the military.

I did comment over there about CiC SCOAMF (I didn't call him that) declaring the Ft. Hood massacre "workplace violence" and asked where is the outrage over unarmed soldiers being murdered?

Crickets.

Isn't it amazing though how other former British colonies like Hong Kong and Singapore are doing so well though.  And the only former European colony that is doing OK is South Africa and it is sliding downhill very fast now.

And yes, I denounce myself for racist thoughts.

I agree that colonialism worked great as a long-term solution, and there are a number of countries that could still benefit from the same arrangement.  However,  when thinking about how to solve the problems in the worldÂ’s basket cases, I think that a monarchy would be a better solution.

Most of the benefit I see in the monarchy approach is that once someone achieves mega-wealth, the only things left are power and glory.  ThereÂ’s never been better motivational tools.

Bleh.  She made her bed and now has to lie in it.  A good chunk of those loans would have been repaid by the Air Force as part of the Student Loan Repayment Program.  Assuming that she's willing to deploy as a JAG officer, a six month tour in Afghanistan would eliminate most of the others.  It's how I ended up returning with no college debt.

188 Funny thing about the South.  When the British ran things and immigrants landed, they put the Catholics in one place and the Protestants in another, to avoid conflict.  My great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was a Hugeunot.   I live near his estate.  I am Catholic.   Btw, I firmly believe that God is non-sectarian.

Actually when the Lord Proprietors founded South Carolina they opened it to all faiths as an incentive to rapidly fill the colony.  For a long time Charleston had the largest group of people of the Jewish faith in the colonies.
