— Guest Blogger In the aftermath of the horrific shooting massacre in Colorado Friday there were plenty of folks who came out looking really stupid. There was the idiot mayor of New York chastising both the president and Mitt Romney over gun control, a pet obsession of a man who also spends way too much time concerning himself with what people like to eat and drink.
Then there was ABC News hack Brian Ross, who felt no compunction about pointing the finger of blame at another man named James Holmes, who just happens to be a member of the Tea Party.
Now along comes some atheist clown who declared that the president praying for the shooting victims and their families was egregiously offensive, leaving us in the rare position of agreeing with Obama.
“I think it’s a little unfortunate,” CSH director Tom Flynn told The Washington Examiner. “Even in a situation like this, [when] he leads a public prayer to a deity that it pretty recognizably the Christian God, much as you can understand the emotional context of it, he’s still sending to some degree a message of exclusion to other religions who don’t call their god “Lord” and to non-religious Americans.”It's tragic events like this that bring out the best in Americans. Unfortunately it also exposes people as complete idiots. And in the case of Tom Flynn, the idiocy is strong. Not only did Obama suffer his wrath, but Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was also on the receiving end of his scorn.“By the very act of praying, that’s a message of exclusion,” he continued. “If I’m a public official, I think I’m going to look around in the morning and conclude that, ‘hey, this religion thing is just too hot to handle, I should stay away from it in my official capacity.’”
For praying for rain. This guy should really consider a gig at The Onion.
"It sends the wrong message to distraught farmers when the Agriculture Secretary suggests that the best response is to pray," said Flynn. "For a Cabinet official to recommend prayer as a solution or call attention to his own devotions may violate the Constitution's prohibition against establishment of religion. Most important, though, is that prayer doesn't work. But if you want to test the power of prayer yourself, consider this. Apparently Secretary Vilsack's been praying for rain every day; how's that working out?"How's being a complete asshole working out, Mr. Flynn?

What those two asshats in the photo need more than anything else is a beating.
2005 -- about 5% unemployment, and a solid job market for recent graduates.
2012 -- about 15% (real) unemployment, and a nonexistent job market for recent grads.
I wonder which set of conditions those two would prefer?

It protects speech, so the Ag secretary can say anything he wants without violating anything. And the establishment of religion clause means that the government cannot establish a state religion, not that religious expression is banned (although the courts have fucked that up).
Is it okay with Mr. Flynn that I pray to Gaia to swallow him up in a land slide or earthquake?

Unlike Brian Ross, I'm not saying it's him or not, but playing Devil's Advocate, doesn't the fact that he made the effort to come out for a counter protest of a Repub make him a more likely kindred spirit in OWS than not? And the "Libs, can we riot now?" sign (complete with anarchist logo) sure makes the case that he doesn't hang with his church youth group.

STATEMENT FROM JIM AND SARAH BRADY ON THE AURORA, CO SHOOTING
Washington, DC - The Brady Campaign issued the following statement from Jim and Sarah Brady in response to the massacre in Aurora, Colorado.
“We are praying for the victims and their families in Aurora and understand the pain they are feeling and will feel for years to come.
Congress has done nothing since the mid-1990s to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. We pledge to keep fighting the NRA and entire gun lobby in an effort to strengthen our background checks to include all firearm purchases, ban assault clips with large magazines that enable mass killers, and to make it more difficult to obtain concealed carry permits.
Every person who agrees with us needs to contact their individual representatives and senators and let them know you are outraged over their caving to the gun lobby. Do it today and do it often in the future. Letters to your local newspaper are a big help as well. Be sure to get your friends and families involved in our efforts too.
We can win this fight, with your voices and your action.”

re: leftist hipster douchebag Holmes
Last night I was trying to make that point. From my iPhone.
25 This fits within the bounds of what the secularist left has always been elsewhere, and has at times been up to here.
He's not insane, he lives at the outer boundary of accepted leftism.
I don't have any direct evidence of this. It's my conjecture based upon what I know of leftists and what I know of the specific act: killing people engaged in capitalism, and doing so to consume a product which apparently celebrates or at least does not vilify capitalism.
That he was a joker fan and he pulled a joker-style act of naked terrorism is ancillary I think to his goal of killing for the left, to be lionized by the leftist cultural elements.
Posted by: Truman North, iPhone snob at July 20, 2012 11:09 PM (UbgS5)
30 A lot of people like the fictional character of the joker. That's why he's batmans main nemesis. If people didn't like the character, batman comics wouldn't feature as many joker stories. Totally okay to enjoy a fictional character, even a really bad guy.
But I can't think of another case when someone brought the joker to life like this.

O/T -- See, it WASN'T Holmes's fault. "He was a shy man."
There is already conjecture that James Holmes may have been involved in mind-altering neuroscience research and ended up becoming involved at a depth he never anticipated. His actions clearly show a strange detachment from reality, indicating he was not in his right mind. That can only typically be accomplished through drugs, hypnosis or trauma (and sometimes all three).
See, it's a false flag because he wasn't a TEA Partier.

We laugh at the atheists now, but they keep hammering away at any mention of religion. I think they are in it to win it. They keep pushing the window. Someday, 5 or 10 years from now they might even succeed. A scary thought.
Only if we don't push back. There are a lot more of us than there are of them. Remember, one of the devil-worshippers Alinsky's rules is to hide your numbers. It's all about what you believe, and if these fringe groups get constant exposure despite being in the minority fringe, you think there are a whole lot of them.

Ah yes, the twin evils that have sowed the seeds of the destruction of White, elitist Amerika.
Religion has fooled generations of Amerikans to believe in something other than the power of communitarian effort to guide society. Guns have fooled these deluded citizens into thinking that they, and they alone have control over their destiny.
But the end is near. With the reelection of President Obama and the final destruction of the capitalist tool that is the NRA, and the confiscation of the weapons that you people think will save you from an enlightened society, the utopia that you have kept at bay because of your ignorance of the flow of history will finally emerge from the ashes of capitalist Amerika!

On Fox while eating lunch I saw them say they were going to use an explosive device to cut the trip wire and they had fire trucks standing by.
They also said several explosive shells had been removed in trucks filled with sand. One wonders where this guy got "explosive shells"?

Latest version of Firefox 14.something.
Only at AoSHQ, get constant "refreshing/Loading" symbol on top.
Have to manually stop the loading process in order to re-refresh.
Unable to get curser to appear in comment box to type comment.
Had to open this thread in a second tab in order to make this comment.
It's almost as if a script is running on the page.

The condensed tomato soup poured out of the can like water. The final product was much more watery than what I am used to as well.
But oddly enough, looking at the ingredients on the label it looks exactly the same except that the salt levels are much lower.

Its kind of funny that I read that headline a couple days ago (that they prayed for rain), and then at my house, where the grass has been dead for a couple of weeks from a month or two of draught, it rained that night a good 2 inches. Enough to saturate down about a foot, and the grass will be back in a week because of it.
So if the praying worked, all the better.

There is info available through firefox's "tools" tab,
But it's beyond my limited understanding.
I upgraded to the FF 14.? yesterday, and suspect that is the cause.
I am able to use the curser to hit the "Bold/underline/italic" buttons, and have them respond to the curser.
But am unable to get the curser to appear in the comment box itself.
Each time I want to comment, I have to open a new tab, and after the first "refresh" that tab goes into the " you can't use the comment box" mode.

As someone whom I can't remember once said, "The problem with atheists is that they talk about God all the time."
Posted by: ErikW at July 21, 2012 07:51 AM (YGpu7)
How an atheist makes a convert: ridicules Christians*, complains when Christians* pray, sues their local Christian* for having a nativity in their yard at Christmas*.
*95% of the time, these turd-drips only whine when the believer is a Christian. Although you might notice a sharp uptick in Mormon bashing as of late. Strange, that.

"Your response says just a leeeeeeeetle bit more about your reaction than it does about her constant nagging. "
I'd say it illuminates both. "Constant nagging" is triggering furious response. There may be a long history behind that one incident, and you can start doing the whole chicken and egg thing, but if the Christians are immediately reacting to this remark, maybe it's because they've been goaded past endurance for a long time.

Hmmm. So the overwhelming majority of the country is seeking emotional consolation through consultaion with their Invisible Friend, wanting to FEEL LIKE they can somehow help, even though they mostly can't, and this guy thinks THAT'S a good time to say "It's all a big crock!" Good luck with THAT, buddy.
As to the Obama comments, custom practically dictates that the President go through that exercise (although I don't think it was always that way), so "good luck with that", too. The Constitution demands that no laws be passed giving preferential treatment to religions, but the President is within his rights to voice personal opinions. As the head of state, however, it is inappropriate (yet still customary!) to give this tacit endorsement of a class of religions (he didn't mention Allah, or Buhda, or whatever). Since he's the guy who is supposed to be enforcing separation of church and state, it leaves the people to wonder whether he's really going to do his job without descrimination with regard to creed (or lack thereof). He's supposed to represent everybody.
As to the Ag Secy comments, again, his remarks are insensitive. But as to what he's complaining about, ANYBODY ought to think to themselves "You've got to be kidding" when the Ag guy's answer to a problem is "pray for rain". It's a joke!! This is a high-level govt bureaucrat, not your local preacher, or Pat Robertson. He's supposed to at least pretend that he has a serious job, that he takes seriously, and that he has serious actions to offer. Maybe you could lead us in a Rain Dance, too, Mr Secretary! There is no similar tradition for the Ag Secy playing a role of trying to be comforting. But folks are in a religious mood over the shooting, so maybe it's looked upon differently right now.

@192 "Atheism is a religion, and should be called as such."
Well, let's go with your quoted definitions, and see where it takes us.
Obviously, athiesm is not a religion, if you go by #2, since there are no "atheism practices", so let's see where #1 takes us. Obviously, the "especially", "usually", and "often" parts don't apply, so we're left with a religion being defined as "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe".
This does not preclude NATURAL beliefs of this kind. HOWEVER, there is not ONE single stated set of beliefs that define atheism (which I presume is define by a lack of supernatural beliefs). What we must conlcude, then, is that "atheism is NOT a religion, but being an atheist doesn't mean you can't have your own personal religion". If you buy into the Big Bang, for example, you would have 2/3 of the requirement for a religion (cause and nature of the universe), and you just have to come up with the "purpose" part on your own to have a complete religion.
I'm guessing you have you some sort of personal investment in your "atheism is a religion" appeal, so I recognize the likely futility of this attempt at a real discussion about it.

I have to question your sincerity. The most important objections are NOT to "shut religious people up", but rather to "shut people in the GOVERNMENT up about religion". The fact that you have conveniently ignored this important detail shows that your statement is really just anti-atheist fascist bigotry, hiding behind faux neutrality.

Hate to break it to you but people in government are, wait for it, people, and they have free speech just like the rest of us, don't like them talking about religion? Vote them out. Making them or anyone else shut up? Fascism. Not to mention the myriad examples of atheists complaining about non-government employees like the elementary school student around here that committed the major crime of handing out candy canes that said Jesus loves you which resulted in harassment, court cases, wasted money and time thanks to the ever offended atheist "community", or the yearly advertising campaign at Easter telling people how ridiculous their beliefs are, no, no bigotry in that, course not. but hey, thanks for showing everyone that yeah, you're only interested in shutting people up, great job.

@199 "Hate to break it to you but people in government are, wait for it, people, and they have free speech just like the rest of us, don't like them talking about religion? ..."
Hate to break it to you, but "people in government" are, by definition, REPRESENTING THE GOVERNMENT. Their religious freedom applies only as private individuals - in other words, when they are NOT acting in an official capacity, and on their own time. If they want to go home (or to their church, or private organization) and praise Jesus until the cows come home, they have every right to knock themselves out. Nice strawman, though.
Handing out Jesus candy at school? I would only have a problem with that in the same way I would have a problem with some kid using his access to other students to advertise stuff for his parents. It would be an inappropriate use of public property. As long as she doesn't make a habit of it, I wouldn't have a problem with it. It's a bit rude to be preaching to the other kids (they're there to be taught, not preached to), but that's life. But, again, nice strawman.
I don't know much about the Easter thing, but I doubt that fits the definition of "bigotry", and we weren't talking about that sort of thing, either. You should really try to focus more, if you're going to try to make some sort of argument.
Posted by: Optimizer at July 21, 2012 08:27 PM (As94z)
@200 You've attributed 3 things to atheists that are not a part of the defiinition of atheism, and so your argument is invalid, and it kind of heads south from there.
@201 You seem very confused, and you're conflating a bunch of things that often go together, but do not have to. You're making assumptions, and you know what that leads to, so I invite you to get yourself a little better educated on this stuff.

1. Anything including rain dances, Wiccan rain incantations or Christian prayers are appreciated and accepted.
2. Who is more irrational the guy who believes in a God he cannot see or the guy who is offended by the God he does not believe in?
~Brad Stine~
4. Faith and belief in something is what keeps us alive, some believe in Gods, God and Goddess, some have faith that there is no God and that is their faith.
5. We need some rain.
