— Ace That'll work.
Another winner from the House of Ideas.
“The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48% after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is. If she can’t break fifty percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down. Todd is in this race to win; we will close this gap and win in November with the support of the grassroots in Missouri and across America.”
Oh, and in the poll (I think this is a result only available to subscribers) Akin's polling at 47% very unfavorable. Not unfavorable; very unfavorable. Just shy of half the state. Corrected: 47%, not 48%.
McCaskill also reacted to the Rasmussen poll, saying it "made her laugh out loud" to propose she was only at 48%.
I misunderstood the point of McCaskill's tweet. She's trying to say it's ludicrous that she's so far ahead, in order to encourage her designated patsy to remain in the race.
Jesus God, McCaskill is actually plumping Akin's chances, while Republicans are despairing.
Is this stupid selfish man capable of seeing the world beyond his ego?

He can't win on his own. He needs to get out now via court order.

Anyway, fuck this wet runny turd. I'd rather talk about Linda McMahon. She's got a real chance at winning because 1.) she's the anti-Akin in terms of her campaigning style -- even as she lost in 2010, a lot of people (myself included) were extremely impressed at how professional and poised and error-free she was as a candidate, aside from her unfortunate WWE background; 2.) Chris Murphy ain't exactly Richard Blumenthal in terms of how beloved he is by the state's voters.
McMahon is currently running a BRUTAL set of attack ads against Murphy -- brutal precisely because all of the state's newspapers, incl. the Hartford Courant and the Stamford Advocate, have said they're perfectly accurate -- pointing out how Murphy has missed over 80% of all the hearings his committees held, including during the financial crisis. And the thing that strikes you in those ads is just how much of a weasel Murphy looks like. It's not just a "poorly chosen photo" thing, either. Physically, he exudes anti-charisma, whereas McMahon looks very much the part of a blue-blooded CT businesswoman.
Will she win? Beats me, and I'd have to guess no. But RCP has already moved this race into the 'straight toss-up' category and I think Murphy is much weaker than he looks.

Which shouldn't even matter anyway. You can forgive someone for making an ass of himself without exonerating him of making an ass of himself. Part of forgiveness is accepting the consequences of your actions. "You made a mistake and you're forgiven. For your benefit and the benefit of the country, you should step aside."

Yes, you're an incompetent lunatic and against a strong candidate you'd be down by 30 and not 10... but I don't think you're done talking so there's still time for you to get there.
Oh, and to win you'll now have to make up 10 points with reduced funding and no support from the GOP while your opponent only has to stay quiet and NOT do anything stupid.
I'm guessing the Claire McCaskill plan of "going on vacation out of the country for 10 weeks" will be a winning strategy. I don't see that she has any more work to do here.

His actual statement was only off a little bit. It was easily defensible especially as any questions about it could have easily been turned against the truly insane and nihilistic views that almost ALL on the left hold. Akin's statement was not nearly what people made it to be (most people spent time lying about what he said and what he meant) and not worthy of the reaction, which helped lead to this situation.
The guy has until September but people on this side act as if the world would end if he wasn't out by the day after he spoke. People here then launched into beating this into the ground for every minute after thinking that if they insulted the guy enough and made enough idiotic rape jokes they would force him out. Great thinking, there ... And, even if someone else goes into the spot evenutally, I think idiots on the right have done enough damage that McKatkill will still have an advantage that she wouldn't have if if were handled a bit more discreetly.

The Loeschs cannot be trusted when it comes to Todd Akin. Akin is a personal friend of theirs, and was a frequent attendee at various BigGovernment events, with a lot of time spent talking to Dana Loesch in particular.
That's the reason they (and others from Breitbart's site) are defending him so retardedly. They have a braindead belief in the importance of "LOYALTY" above all else -- forgetting that this politics, not the battle of Fallujah, that we're talking about.
Anyway, in case you were wondering why they in particular are so weirdly aggressive about defending Akin, that's your reason -- with them it's personal.

"Isn't it just great that not only has he hurt our chances in November , he now has become the greatest poster boy for what's wrong with conservatives, and so many on our side will still defend what he said etc etc."
STOP.
He has not hurt our chances in November. There is no evidence to support that other than our own internal fears. It doesn't have to be that way. And who knows, with Obama and DWS calling the plays, he may actually help in some bizarre way.
And he is not the greatest poster boy for what's wrong with conservatives.
If fiscal conservatism is as all important as most posters on this board seem to think, then I can think of a lot worse "conservatives."
And because if you aren't vociferously attacking Akin, it means you tacitly support him, I must point this out. I do not support Akin, his idiotic statement, or want him to stay in the race.

The great thing about legitimate incest is the body has a way of shutting down the pregnancy.
That's because women's bodies don't have things like livers, or gall bladders. Armed with genetically endowed black belts in Sperm-jitsu, the only way to get the ol' polliwogs past her rather formidable defenses is scented candles, chick flicks, jewelry....and if that doesn't work, booze.

Ah, that answers a LOT of questions - thanks for the info. Dloesch was mainly using the excuse that we should win on "principle" - it's good to know there is more going on than meets the eye. I admire loyalty, but this election is different. This is for ALL the marbles. I would throw my own grandmother under the bus if that's what it took to win. Thankfully, most, but not all, of the conservative pundits understand this.

Aiken isn't dropping out. So let's either start concentrating on other winnable races or escalating our ridicule of the dems (of which there's plenty of material). Their convention, as it looks right now, is turning into a pervert freak show. And I still haven't seen any indication that the politicians that have declined to go have changed their minds. The dems have a lot of problems too.
AND, we might as well get used to the fact that the MFM is going to pound the Aiken story until it's a burnt-out carcass left on a lonely road. We've beat them so far on the information war, let's keep going. Aiken is certainly a set-back, but let's not take our eyes away from the prize which is very very doable. I'm talking about the presidency, the senate, and retaining the house.

I still say this whole situation could have been easily defused if the reaction on our side had been, "He said that? Well, I certainly don't agree." And left it at that. By turning this into a firestorm it just reinforces for the idiot "low information" voters out there the enduring falsehood that the Republicans and conservatives are antiquated idiots who think women should be barefoot and pregnant and should quit their back talk or they'll get the strap. "Oooh, the Republicans are really fired up about this guy's comment! He must have pulled back the mask a bit too far, and now he's shown the world what the Republicans REALLY think so they're ganging up on him!"

Eventually, Lulli shared with my the story of the courtship between her and Todd..a story which could easily be taken right out of a biblical romance novel. She talked about their prayerful plight through GodÂ’s desire for her husband in politics, and the strength and wisdom she gleaned from The Lord as a mother, and wife of a public figure. It was then that she shared perhaps the most profound statement I had ever heard:
She told me “Todd fears The Lord, not man.”

(1) If Akin doesn't drop out (and no comparable controversy arises against McCaskill before election day to damage her), he will lose probably by 15-20 points (at least) and him all of his staff will be ostracized permanently by the GOP in his retirement, especially since it will likely result in ObamaCare remaining the permanent law of the land.
(2) If Akin miraculously wins, virtually no one in the GOP will want to be seen with him and he will probably have little to no influence in the Senate (e.g., will he even receive any committee assignments from the GOP leadership?).
(3) If Akin tries to drop out by late September by the next deadline and is prevented by the Missouri court to whom he must submit his request to withdraw, then he will lose by even more than he already will.
(4) If Akin tries to drop out by late September and the panel accepts his request, he's still going to be despised by the GOP for the distraction he caused for the entire party across the whole country and possibly makes it impossible to even win the race with a different replacement candidate.
Akin is not only a shitstain but also a stupid son of a bitch.

Hucksterbee must have a monetary interest in going the extra mile for Akin. I can't believe he is doing this based on principle, because he has already demonstrated he has none.
Whoever suggested Carl Edwards as the write-in is brilliant. If Carl doesn't want to abandon NASCAR, he can always resign after getting elected, provided MO has a GOP governor who can appoint his replacement.

@180. I think the party probably offered to carry him off the battlefield and take him back to the MASH unit as they made a small retreat to in order to prep for the next attack, but the one wounded guy decided he would rather stay and fight rather than listening to his commanders and his fellow soliders.
Kind of reminds me of that fable about the guy in his home stuck on his roof who keeps saying God will save him, after rescuer after rescuer comes by. Then asks God why he didn't save him in the end.
The party offered this guy a rescue (I'm guessing). He didn't take it.
But whatever. He may still come to his senses. He may not. He has been scorned, and further scorning will probably have zero affect. Time to focus on the big picture.

you see this is where you run off the rails. You imagine that if* a woman is less susceptible to conception because of rape that, that is relevant to the discussion of abortion rights. It isn't. You have to assume that some women who are raped will get pregnant, and those women, whether the law favors their right to choose or not, deserve acknowledgement of their very legitimate concern, and an ideological answer aimed specifically at them as to *why* they can't get an abortion. "There aren't enough of you to be concerned with" is not an acceptable answer.
*Admitted only for the sake of point. I haven't seen conclusive proof of this.

The people of Missouri have been voting for him for 2-1/2 decades, I have to believe they know him well, know his heart.
If he is not going to drop out then he has to be rehabilitated somehow.
McCaskil cannot be allowed to skate to victory.
Huckabee is a clown but may be useful if he can act as an agent to rehabilitate this man that has had an incredibly conservative voting record.

Who is a liability. You forget that. A social con that is a liability. Ficons have sh*t the bed before and cost us races. Yes it's a double standard because they are usually allowed to run afterward to see if they can recover. But their is a reason for the double standard. The problem when a socon implodes is that the issues are usually VERY emotional. Whereas Ficon issues are less so typically. Emotion is a big deal in politics; And require a more drastic response. Just the nature of the issues, and as a SoCon you should know you are stepping on peoples feelings and tread lightly.

Don't put your ideas into my mouth. If you want to debate me then stick
to things I actually say. This is the sort of shit that really ticks
me off. I said nothing about that part of his argument, which was nothing more than a silly attempt to PC-up his anti-abortion stance in all circumstances to make it more palatable to people. It was stupidly done but not the ssence of his argument, which was about illegitimate [claims of] rape, which is what he messed up on. It doesn't take more than two brain cells to understand this but it seems that so many of you are lacking this minimal requirement.
If you want to debate me on this then stick to things I write. I write what I think and I am not shy about saying exactly what the details of any of my arguments are. You can go back and take anything I've written before on it (and there is quite a bit) and use that, but you are not entitled to make up strawmen and put them into my argument. Try and show some intellectual honesty. Just a little.

His "reaction" to today's poll was all the evidence we need to know that there's nothing left but his ego. Citing the polling data was a weak-ass smokescreen. Since a poll in which he leads by one gets the same response as a poll in which he's down 10, that's proof enough.
It reminds me of the TrueCons who were so convinced that Christine O'Donnell could make up a 20-point deficit in the polls.

Because it's a non-serious question. "What do you think of Representative Akin's comments regarding rape?"
"I disagree with him."
"Do you think that his comments will give credence to the democratic stance that the republicans are waging a war on women?"
"The "War on Women" that's being waged, if there is one, is being waged by the Democrats, under whose tenure women have seen their families suffer in a crippling economy..."

We can't focus on the rest of that stuff because Todd Akin just giftwrapped a distraction the left, and ignoring it just looks like we're changing the subject. We're talking about a narrative that the left has been working on for years.
There are plenty of moronic (not in the good AoS way) righties who will give you plenty of red meat. (Pro Tip: Simply wanting red meat means you don't want to think about anything. You just want to know the latest talking points and who to hate. Well guess what: It's not enough. Sometimes you have to know that your own side has dumb opinions and include bunch of screw ups, too. For example:
Trace Gallagher, filling in for Sheppie Smith, just led off his segment with a teaser about..."an Update on the Todd Akin story"....to be covered later in the hour.
The thing that is giving this story legs.....is the part about a "Woman's body having the ability to prevent getting pregnant from a rape".
The weapons grade stupid in Akin's statement...is what is still keeping it in the news.

Very little formal research has been conducted on the prevalence of false allegations of rape. One study looked at the 109 cases of forcible rape that were disposed of in one small midwestern town between 1978 and 1987 (Kanin, 1994). The given town was specifically selected for study because the police department used a uniquely objective and thorough protocol when investigating rape complaints. Among other procedural safeguards, officers did not have the discretion to drop rape investigations if they concluded the complaint was "suspect" or unfounded. Every rape accusation had to be thoroughly investigated and included offering a polygraph to both the accuser and the accused. Cases were only determined to be false if and when the accuser admitted that no rape occurred.
The researchers further investigated those cases that the police, through their investigation, had ultimately determined were "false" or fabricated. During the follow-up investigation, the complainants held fast to their assertion that their rape allegation had been true, despite being told they would face penalties for filing a false report. As a result, 41% of all of the forcible rape complaints were found to be false. To further this study, a similar analysis was conducted on all of the forcible rape complaints filed at two large midwestern public universities over a 3-year period. Here, where polygraphs were not offered as part of the investigatory procedure, it was found that 50% of the complaints were false.
Charles P. McDowell, a researcher in the United States Air Force Special Studies Division, studied the 1,218 reports of rape that were made between 1980 and 1984 on Air Force bases throughout the world (McDowell, 1985). Of those, 460 were found to be "proven" allegations either because the "overwhelming preponderance of the evidence" strongly supported the allegation or because there was a conviction in the case. Another 212 of the total reports were found to be "disproved" as the alleged victim convincingly admitted the complaint was a "hoax" at some point during the initial investigation. The researchers then investigated the 546 remaining or "unresolved" rape allegations including having the accusers submit to a polygraph. Twenty-seven percent (27%) of these complainants admitted they had fabricated their accusation just before taking the polygraph or right after they failed the test. (It should be noted that whenever there was any doubt, the unresolved case was re-classified as a "proven" rape.) Combining this 27% with the initial 212 "disproved" cases, it was determined that approximately 45% of the total rape allegations were false.

Trying to step back and take the bigger picture into account, is it possible that Akin may be a godsend in the same way that Santorum was? His fringe-y SocialCon patter sure does bring out the freak flag worst in the Dems. Akin has already baited the Dems into turning the debacle-to-be in Charlotte into a true cluster fuck of epic, baby-killing-lover proportions.
Meanwhile, R&R just keep chugging along, looking like the adults in the room talking about energy independence and the economy, and jobs, jobs, jobs.
And if any sitting Dem senator could still be beat by a guy like Akin, it is certainly Claire-bear. She is failure personified.

'Ettes, please address this.
And then get me a sammich.
No, seriously, that very concerned complaint reeks of fail.
First: Men try to avoid the issue of Abortion like the plague- for a variety of reasons. When we are forced to address it, most will still say things like "well, it's really not my place," or "I'm not a woman, but I think..."
The Morons are less shy about voicing our opinions, and even we don't really like the issue, simply because of all the emotional fireworks that go along with it.
Second: Your stance is still predicated on the idea that the child is not a human life. If you accept that, then why is abortion "tragic" at all? It would be no more tragic than having am mole removed. If it is a human life, then it's right to Life really outweighs your right to avoid dealing with a horrible event of which you were a victim. And, I'm sorry, but that's what aborting a baby of rape is- a form of denial, just like the (very natural, but still destructive) desire to "wash him off" and then never speak of it again.
So which is it: is that baby as much a life as you are? Or is it "just a clump of cells?"

I guess they think that not only is there a magic uterus , there is also a magic ballot box." Avi.
The problem is not the highlighting factor, it's the 'what's wrong' factor and most if not all of what's wrong is so-con related. That's just the truth. As long as there are so-cons believing that it is God's will that they prevail, trouble lurks around just about every corner. This is just the latest. Fanatics make for nasty politics, win or lose.
Imagine what the playing field will look like by November if this idiot is still making news, or can be used as you say, to illustrate 'what's wrong with conservatives'. I don't think it will be pretty. Others may differ.

I'm increasingly convinced Huck is perfectly happy to sabotage R/ R (as someone else here put it, the Mormon/ Catholic ticket). I don't know if that was his intention all along (he and McCaskill together seem the 2 parties most responsible for Akin's primary victory), but I don't think the prospect of fucking things up for R/ R (and their disciplined, up to this point very effective campaign, focused on the economy/ fiscal issues/ Obama's record) bothers him in the slightest. He's getting a thrill out of this, I'm sure.
As a fiscal con, I value and respect most socons, and think they're a valuable core contingent of the big tent. But I wonder if a few socon political figures (like the high profile types rallying around Akin now) are resentful or afraid that their influence (at least for the 2012 campaign) has diminished, that this is a fiscal con election, that it's all about the economy, and not the topmost issues of the Religious Right. Resentful that Romney's the nominee (not just an "economy" candidate, but a Mormon to boot!), as opposed to someone like Santorum.
The ironic thing is, socon issues actually have been part of the campaign, but in a politically advantageous way for the GOP, in a way that didn't distract from but complemented the substantive economic focus. A desperate Obama was all about gay marriage, "free" Fluke contraception, infringing on Catholic institution's religious liberty, and so on. Romney/ Ryan are strong on those issues (especially the last two), not just substantively but *politically*. For all the "war on women" "war on gays" etc. BS, the Dems' attempt to run on social issues hysteria was hurting them with voters, not us.
But Akin and his advocates have changed that dynamic. I hope the damage is only localized, and might be turned against an overreaching DNC. Still, there's no denying that Akin can hurt us a lot with low-info voters.

Wasn't there a dem who was caught blowing an underage teen or vice versa? Seriously why do we not have endless stories about that?
Good question. I don't remember the left dismissing the guy as a pervert and loon, and then moving on. I don't recall the media in this country hanging that guy's indiscretions around the collective neck of the left.
I do recall googling (Google News) both this morning.
Kelly Gauthier......less than 8000 hits.
Todd Akin......more than 8 million hits.
Akin needs to go, and Fuckabee needs to shut the hell up.
And this is not doomy doom....it's a distraction that we can ill afford. Even though Romney has called on Akin to quit....the left continues, with the complicit help of the media, in hanging his 'crime' around Romney's neck. Two days ago, Sen Babbles Boxcar, (D, Scrunt), was lambasting Romney for not being outraged enough. Can you imagine that story getting any traction if the roles were reversed? Well, in the case of Gauthier, they are...yet I don't see the media beating itself to death trying to tie a blow job with a 17 year old to Obama.
This is the reality we find ourselves in. Like it or not, we have to deal with it, and we have to recognize that we're not playing on a level playing field. The ultimate repudiation is Akin off the ticket. That's the only way this faux issue is going to be resolved.

It was off by a little bit. Period. Just because you want to make a side-issue the main thrust of his argument doesn't mean that it was. It was NOT. It was off, though the rest of his statement was fine for those who are anti-abortion without rape exceptions.
Anyone with a brain who wants to make abortion illegal would have to come to the conclusion that leaving a rape exception would be inviting disaster and chaos as false (i.e. illegitimate) claims of rape would skyrocket. Seeing that rape is the one accusation that men get absolutely no fair treatment in court, have no possibility for redress if proven innocent (not acquitted, but proven to be innocent), and those bearing false witness face no penalties of punishments (or even taxes, as Benedict Roberts would say) for their crime, you'd have to be totaly brain-dead not to understand what serious damage rape exceptions in abortion would do to society and the law (not that we have any Rule of Law in this nation anyway ...).
Yes, Akin was a little off. Period. Because he didn't just state his position and stand by it but because he tried to think up some PC explanation to soften it. That's it.

Wrong. It's a big deal to the women who have those 1% of abortions due to rape, as well as any friends and family who knows someone that became pregnant from a rape. The numbers I saw show that 40% of women who become pregnant after being raped give birth anyway and keep the child, while another 10% or so give birth and give the baby up for adoption.
Perhaps a pro-life candidate should say something like, "I would hope that every woman who becomes pregnant decides to carry the baby to term, but I acknowledge that in certain rare circumstances the decision is not so cut and dried, such as a woman becoming pregnant from rape. First of all, we should capture and prosecute rapists to the fullest extent of the law, as I would support long -- and hopefully even life sentences -- for rapists, while also legally preventing them from having any legal rights to the child that results from the rape. Second, we should try to encourage more women who become pregnant from a rae to carry the baby to term and hopefully keep the baby or put the child up for adoption, which research has shown that around 50% of women in those situations do. I acknowledge this is not the perfect choice for all parties, especially for the poor women who are the victims of the rape, but it's obviously a much better solution for the unborn child. Nonetheless, I acknowledge that it's a situation in which there are no easy or ideal answers but continue to hope that life is always the final decision made by all women who become pregnant."
That may not be a perfect response, as I wrote it off the top of my head, but it's much better one than espousing theories about magical powers possessed by women in which they can stifle the sperm of rapists.

If he didn't believe it but said it anyway he was lying.
If he did believe it and it wasn't any basis for his position and he used it as his reasoning anyway he was still lying.
If he did believe and it was part of his reasoning then he was dead wrong with his reasoning for multiple reasons and a long way from being able to discuss the topic intelligently.
For some things a 90% percent correct solution is a long long way from good enough if your last 10% is really really F*ed up.

Don't bother with the idiot Primordial. He wants to pretend he's whoopi goldberg and playing semantic games with rape is a good idea on the national stage. We wants to demand that we recognize Akin's original comments were just poorly worded and he doesn't actually believe that its not possible to get pregnant from a rape. He wants to ignore Akin's appearance on Hannity Tuesday where he talked about how over the "past two days" he's learned that yes you can get pregnant from a rape. So this jackass went from having a statement that sounds like he thinks women who got pregnant from a rape are liars, to saying that he did believe exactly that until Sunday. And Whoopi there wants us to defend him like democrats defend Joe Biden.
