Looks Likely That Santorum Will Take AL and MS
— Ace Absurdly close in Alabama, and mixed results, but still close, narrowly in favor of Gingrich in Mississippi.
There's also some caucuses in Hawaii and Samoa.
GOPers in both states say the most important factor is who can beat Obama.
If the polls are accurate, we won't know who won until pretty late.
Drudge: Just a headline, no link: Drudge says Romney is set for a win in Mississippi, while Alabama is too tight to call.
**Links for Results**
ALABAMA**CAC calling for Santorum @ 9:38pm EST
MISSISSIPPI **CAC calling for Santorum @ 9:50pst EST (this may be retracted but looks solid for now)
HAWAII
AMERICAN SAMOA
CAC- I will be updating these and calling the states as we go, just like Super Marte. Currently have MS-->Romney, HI-->Romney, AS--->Romney, AL-->Tossup between Gingrich/Santorum

The only person who can't beat Obama is the guy named Barack Hussein Obama. Let's just hope he doesn't decide last minute to run as Baraka Soetoro or something like that.

Why does it matter if Mitt "wins" the state or not?
Don't either Gingrich or Santorum need overwhelming wins to get enough delegates? Or are these one-man-takes-all-delegate states?

"It is a wise candidate who knows when to praise local cuisine."
And there's plenty to praise Down South: cathead biscuits, gravy (both sausage and redeye), hominy, cornbread, fried okra, sun tea, BBQ'd anything, greens cooked with a hamhock, fried fish and grits for breakfast...
I loved growing up in the South. Gentle people united with a love of food, family and good conversation seasoned with a graceful lilt. Bluegrass music imported directly from Ireland and a love of the good Earth and the Bounty of God.

While we're keeping up, catch this: The CBO just announced the cost of the next ten years of Obamacare. $1.76 trillion. Next year the ten year cost will rise to $2 trillion. They also discovered the plan leaves 27 million uninsured.

1) Newt can't win, there is really no way he can get enough delegates to hit 1144, especially if not sweeping the southern states.
2) Santorum isn't mathematically eliminated yet, but he needs to win these things by a large margin to get delegates.
3) Romney competing in Al and MS (especially a win in MS) puts a huge crimp in the "he can't carry the South" meme.
4) Delegates are still proportional, so that helps Romney. He keeps adding to his count, even in states that should be hostile.
5) Next month, we move to winner take all states, especially Texas. Romney is going to dump buckets of money there, just like he did in Florida. Without some kind of momentum by a notRomney, he will take all of Texas delegates.
6) California will also be winner take all. Romney will be likely take the 5 largest states, 3 (or 4?) of which are winner take all.
7) It will be May before he locks it up, but Romney is very likely to get to 1144 and a first ballot nomination.
9) In 2008 the Democrat nomination was not wrapped up until June, it didn't hurt them.

OK, Southern Story Time. Gather 'round, you little Morons.
I once worked at the hospital in a famous Southern Football Town that Groucho Marx once joked about. I noticed that I never, ever saw any of the hospital honchos eat in the cafeteria with the rest of us in the brand new addition they had recently completed.
I happened to follow one of them one day into the old cafeteria in one of the old buildings where there was a group of older women of color cooking. The smell of the food in there was Heaven on Earth.

201 Anybody ever run with weights before? I just did a little over 4 miles with 1lb. around each ankle. Holy crap, my legs are a good kind of sore.
Not a good idea to run with ankle weights; the acceleration and deceleration at the end of a long lever is tough on the joints (although using just one pound might be OK).
Better to run with a weight on your back, or my favorite: running stadiums (up and down steps). The more steps, the better; running up and down one flight five times is MUCH easier than running up five flights once.

Pretty common when you look at a lot of states, the rural areas and smaller towns are mostly red, but once a city reaches a certain size, you end up getting a lot more blue.
Hell, that's California. Carve out SF and LA (please!), and now some infected parts of SD, and the rest of the state is red (not Red).

"Why? You're interested in 5 more years of Obama?"
The election in 10 months away yet Romney is such a fragile candidate that we're being told that everyone needs to shut and rally around him now, instead of a few months from now. Mitt can't take any scrutiny, or handle himself in a fight that is even close to fair.

Nope. They have Dan Boren, the ultimate blue-dog Democrat, as a Congressman in the eastern part of the state. But he's had enough and is retiring this year. It will finally be 100% GOP after 2012.
I always liked Boren. He was genuinely more conservative than a good 50% of the GOP caucus.

You are an ignoramus who understands nothing about what a brokered convention would ACTUALLY DO. Brokered conventions DO NOT result in the sudden drafting of a new third party. They always and inevitably result in one of the current candidates being selected -- almost always the one with the most votes going into the brokering. The only thing that happens is that the chosen candidate has to make promises or choose certain ticket-mates in order to secure the delegates.
You seem to have this fantasy of a brokered convention -- in AUGUST, three months before the general election -- as a magical 'reset' button. It's not. All it means is that Romney would still be the nominee, but more wounded.

Moreover, the rules Steele bequeathed the party could yield an outcome in which Romney finishes with the most delegates, but not an outright majority, necessitating a brokered convention.
“I wanted a brokered convention,” Steele tells me. “That was one of my goals.” Why in the world would a party chairman desire apparent turmoil? To create excitement and shake up the party, Steele explains. …
Not all of the RNC officials at the time craved such creative disorder. Steele, recalls Doug Heye, then the RNC’s communications director, “said in a few interviews that as a political junkie, he’d like to see a brokered convention, and I counseled him that the party chairman may not want to advocate for chaos at a convention he has to manage.”

Posted by: disgusted at March 13, 2012 06:25 PM (oZfic)
Just curious: are you actually thinking about this?
Do you understand the truly herculean amount of money and organizational effort required to put together a national general-election level campaign? "Enthusiasm" won't mean shit for dick in a general election. 'Enthusiasm' gets the same 30% of hardcore GOP voters to the polls who went in 2008 and 2004, and 2000, and 1996, etc.
It is literally ILLEGAL for a 'new' candidate to simply step into, say, Romney's organizational structure and take it over like a guy piloting a mecha-robot. He would have to build his own group. That simply cannot be done in three months, not in the modern era, not against Obama's big money, not while he's trying to define himself for the American voters.
You're a retard, I'm sorry to say, if you think a "fresh candidate" would be anything other than a 100% guaranteed death sentence due simply to the brute logistical realities of American politics. But I'm sorry: you want to hold on to your beautiful dream.

robtr @547,
If Mitt managages 1/3 of the delegates from here on out, he isn't going to be the nominee, pretty simple. The GOP will realize he can't win enough of the GOP voters over and would be a drag all the way down the ticket. Mitt HAS to get a majority before the convention, and preferably by May, else the GOP will be shopping.

I said what I said. I did not mention anyone's faith nor did I say BO has the south sewn up. I merely said to those thinking romney can't win in a general because of the south that his pick of McDonald, a very popular governor, would take care of that problem which is why mittens is calmly losing and not caring. I don't have a horse in this race, the more I know all of them, the more I don't like any of them. If the economy is bad and the president's numbers are way down and gas is $7 a gallon, godzilla would be elected on the republican ticket. But if everything appears fine, if the price of gas is down, is people are finding jobs, if the poll numbers rise to better levels, then the GOP needs a way stronger candidate than these three stooges to fire up the base and it's not sarah palin or jeb bush. But they better be thinking about it now.

I don't get repubs, most of the voters in the primaries said electability is a key issue, that Romney is more electable, yet they don't vote for him. I don't get it at all, the jerk in the WH is beatable, my wife, a solid blue collar democrat will not vote for Barry, but she cannot stand Santorum either and will not vote for him, but just not vote at all. I don't get it this repub strategy at all.
Is the goal to make sure Romney's not the nominee or to beat Obama? And the best way to do that is to make Obama the sole topic, Santorum has so many things he's done and said in the past, he will spend most of the defending that, rather than going on the offense against Barry. Yea, Romney's like tofu, but when you have the stench of an administration, its better to have tofu to make that stench the sole focus. I'm really just lost on what the repub's strategy is. Santorum's not just a social conservative, he's a big govt social conservative (terry schiavo), and he will alienate so many independents once all he's said in the past will be on the front pages of the NYT. He'll spend all his time just defending what's he's said. I really thought there was a good chance to beat Obama, Romney I thought was the most electable to do it(I liked Perry before, but he can't debate), looks like the most conservative, but unelectable person may be the nominee. Santorum will not be able to pivot to a more centerist position. And the MSM will be in full campaign mode for their Messaih man. I'm not following the delegate things, does this mean Santorum's now leading in delegates?

Well that's true but the rest of the country isn't 75% born again christians like Alabama and Mississippi. Santorum is a strong so con and even with that he is only getting 1/3 of the votes in the south where 50% of the people beleive that being mormon is not being christian.
That is a pretty poor showing for St. Santorum.

Yeah good times guys, well done.
If Mitt comes in third in one of these states, yeah blame the base in these states for not falling in fucking line like lemmings. Heaven forbid people vote their conscience. A lot of people work 80 hours a week and aren't commenters on a website and get their info with what little time they have.
Perhaps you should look at your candidate for not convincing them to vote for him, but no. Don't vote Mitt = fucking dumb hicks who hate America.

Don't be a drooling vegetable retard. Of COURSE Romney can win the South...in a general election. Shit, he fought Gingrich and Santorum to a practical standstill in a PRIMARY despite being a Satan-worshipper in the eyes of most of these states' voters.
Every single state in the Old Confederacy is guaranteed to go hardcore GOP in November with the exception of FL, VA, NC, which will be predictable swing states. If you disagree, please explain to me exactly the scenario under which Barack Obama wins AL, MS, GA, SC, TN, KY, LA, or AR.

I agree. If Newt supporters were primarily not-Romney voters-- i.e. primarily motivated to prevent Romney from getting the nomination-- most of them would have moved on to Santorum already. If they're still sticking with Newt (and haven't moved on to Santorum, the ABR with more viable numbers), it's for a reason.
If/ when they have to give up on Newt, IMO they're just as likely to make a pragmatic ABO (or ABS) choice and go with Romney, than make the ABR choice and go with Santorum.

He isn't particularly much of an economic conservative and was generally a friend of big government and big labor. He's got all the right social conservative things to say, but several months of vagina monologues isn't going to win the election.

I got to go to the Olympic Games in China. It's pretty impressive over there how quickly they can build things, how productive they are as a society. The evidence that Democrats are voting in primaries to any greater extent than they have in the past is not in evidence. In fact, figures have those numbers actually down from previous presidential years. Of Democrats asked upon exit polling who they voted for, there is not the overwhelming vote for Santorum vs Romney that you seem to think there is. In other words, the facts do not support your assumptions.
As to whether or not I live in some deep red state. I live in Wisconsin, where we know what it takes to actually get conservative Republicans elected in a Democratic-leaning state. Case in point - Paul Ryan, Ron Johnson, Scott Walker.

I support Romney because I think Romney would make a much better POTUS than Santorum. By far. Especially for the difficult, painstaking, politically arduous and tricky job of dealing with, rolling back, and counteracting Obama's harmful legacy. Fiery "true conservative" rhetoric may feel good, but it alone doesn't accomplish anything (and may be counterproductive when it counts: you don't want to scare and rile up Americans when you have to do painful surgery; a "boring" doctor-- who knows what he's doing-- is often best). You need someone who'll attend scrupulously to the task at hand, and has the chops to do it.
I'm reminded of the recent OOT bit re Ike's style. Give me "boring" ultra-competence, please. Give me the guy who has a talent for and obsession with looking at the numbers, the bottom line, making hard choices to salvage and turn around businesses and large organizations, the guy who knows private enterprise inside out, the guy with serious executive experience. The guy's who's a master at the art of the *possible*.
Not the guy who thinks the POTUS should be lecturing Americans about their sexual morality. Not the guy who has no private sector or executive experience, whatsoever. IMO Santorum is about as equipped to handle the Presidency-- at an extremely critical period, fiscally and otherwise-- as Obama in 2008. (If he's the nominee, I'd still vote for him over Obama. But feeling a great deal of anxiety, disgust, and despair.)
