Amusing: The Avengers (1978 Version)
— Ace

I watched almost everything they used for the clips here -- including Exo-Man.

I got mad at my dad because at one point in Exo-Man, someone said, "Kill Exo-Man now!" and my dad said, sarcastically, "Kill Exo-Man??!!" Like, pretending he was into it, but totally wasn't. Totally taking me out of my Exo-Man mood.

Anyway.

Bonus Nonsense: Speaking of Black Widow... Is Putin having an affair with Russian SexSpy Anna Chapman?

The 70s Were Big On Cheapie TV Superhero Shows: The Six Million Dollar Man, I think, got the ball rolling, and then there were all sorts of superhero shows, usually of really low quality.

The Hulk show had mid-range production values, at least, compared to some of the others.

This was during a period when Marvel was giving out its licenses to anyone for very low rates, and I guess DC did the same.

Anyway, to prove this: There was a horrible, horrible prime-time show called something like "Challenge of the Super-Friends." To give you an idea of the tenor of it, I think Ruth Buzzi was a guest star. It was a comedy or something, but with Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, and so on. Pretty much most of the major DC characters except for Wonder Woman (rights had been sold for a show that would soon be on TV) and Superman (rights had been sold for a movie that would soon be in theaters).

Anyway, that thing was godawful and had a super-low budget. Most of it was villains and heroes in costumes just sitting around their headquarters.

But a few morons watched it (me), so they did another one, with an even lower budget.

How do you do a super-hero show with no budget? Well, how about the Super Friends have Roast hosted by Ed McMahon, where they trade quips with Sinestro and Solomon Grundy? Just standing at podiums?

This happened. Here's special guest "Ghetto Man" appearing at the Justice League, um, Roast.

32 Exo-Man was what they call a backdoor pilot, a TV movie which is really a pilot for a planned series. if peope watch the movie and like it, they do the series. They did not make a series about Exo-Man so you can do the math. It was about a guy crippled in a mugging. He builds a suit which permits him to walk (robotic) and gives him super strength and armor and such. It was basically half ripping off The Six Million Dollar man and half Iron Man, but mostly the six million dollar man.

(sees the update) There's a story that at one point, Marvel accidentally sold some rights to Spider-Man to two different companies, since the brain trust at Legal thought that the Astonishing Spider-Man and the Amazing Spider-Man (IIRC) were two different characters.

Anyway, even now, different companies have the TV/movie rights to different superheroes, which is (partly) why X-Men, Spider-Man, etc. are different franchises even though in the comics, it was all supposed to be one world.

Also, I forgot to mention that Christopher Lee is in one of the Captain America made-for-TV movies, which is awesome.

No one has their supporting cast except Iron Man- and even he only has Pepper (not sure how she factors in exactly, but she's in the movie).  Part of the point was to separate them from their normal support structures.

After the success of X-men and Spiderman, Marvel began repurchasing (or not renewing) some of the rights to those movies.  Hence we've had 2 hulks, and I believe that the Spiderman rights reverted back from Sony so Marvel is at the helm of those now.

What I'd like to see is some villain-switching.  Dr. Doom usually menaces the Fantastic Four, but make him an Iron Man villain in the movies.  Make Doctor Octopus some Stark rival and have him fight Iron Man.  Have the Hulk fight some Hydra goons. That kind of thing.

I think he holds the record for number of speaking parts in films, or something.  He's done a ton of stuff, and he's pretty elderly now.

After the success of X-men and Spiderman, Marvel began repurchasing (or not renewing) some of the rights to those movies. Hence we've had 2 hulks, and I believe that the Spiderman rights reverted back from Sony so Marvel is at the helm of those now.

Posted by: tsrblke at April 24, 2012 04:36 PM (22rSN)

Yeah.  Having Iron Man start laying the groudwork for The Avengers was a pretty bold move, partly because you couldn't make a shared universe since different groups held the rights to different stuff.  The other part (which Ace has talked about before) is that if you start with the team-up movie, that movie's gonna suck, since you have to have origin stories, and get the band together... That's a lot to do, unless they're a team from early on and have the same origin (X-Men).

Having a shared universe (beyond just sequels and prequels) really hasn't been done before in film, or at least not well.

Oh, yeah, that'd be awesome. There's a big market out there.  Even if they did straight-to-DVD movies that tied in directly to the big screen movies. But yeah, Dr. Doom against the world.  Make Reed Richards look like some annoying punk so you root for Doom.  Then in the main event (i.e. the sequel, or Fantastic Four 1, or whatever), you see the rest of the story.

145 Comics companies nearly went under in the late '70's.  DC even made Detective Comics a quarterly publication for a while.  Second worst period for comic companies, next to Marvel declaring bankruptcy in the late 1990s.  It would make sense that they would whore their licenses for next to nothing for TV.

150 Don't forget Captain Marvel and Isis! They were Saturday morning kid shows, but I was kid. They were terrific. At the time I only thought Captain Marvel looked different and didn't understand why, but the original actor to play Captain Marvel was fired and replaced. The producers say he abandoned the job for not showing up at work. The actor said he was sick but did show up. He successfully sued for unlawful termination.

Also, there was Wonder Woman. No one is a better Wonder Woman than Lynda Carter.
