— Ace Knocks Palin for interfering, as she terms it, in the Republican primary, while actually no longer being in politics.
It's pretty tough stuff.

How annoying that she criticizes a Republican who actually accomplished things in office.
Ann Coulter is simply a shill for Romney.
Romney probably will be the nominee, and so his fans need to consider how to bring conservatives back into the tent. Bashing Palin is the most asinine tactic imaginable.

Remember when Ann spent months pretending that she was going to run for President, complete with pseudo-campaign bus tour and frequent appearances in early voting states that legitimate candidates were campaigning in?
Posted by: Hollowpoint at March 14, 2012 02:17 PM (SY2Kh)
But it does read like Coulter is marking her territory. "You can't be a female right-winger and sell books! Only I get to do that!"
Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at March 14, 2012 02:17 PM (QTHTd)
So she called Palin a charlatan. I wish I had a buck for every time Santorum went on local radio calling COD a "gadfly". Oh yeah and what did he say to get Sarah so miffed that she called him a knuckle-dragging neanderthal?
Everybody calls somebody something.
And the wheels on the bus go round and round...

Ann Coulter six months later- Romney is the most conservative conservative that ever lived!
I can get saying, "of all the choices we have Mitt is the best" but she's now praising everything about Romney that she said would lead to his defeat and pissing on people who agree with her original position.
She's an idiot.
Posted by: DrewM. at March 14, 2012 02:18 PM (WnQJ3)
She appears to be squandering her opportunity here. I was expecting her to remain rather low profile until a candidate is nominated. Coming out for Gingrich, literally a "third rate" candidate, is going to somewhat diminish her influence once Newt drops out or is tossed out of contention.
"Voting your conscience" is generally not a very smart thing to do. Good strategy is often counter-intuitive. A general who allows himself to be driven by emotions ends up losing a war. The goal here is (or should be) to defeat Obama. It has apparently turned in to a goal of defeating Romney for many, and that strategy could easily cost the Republicans the White House.

Mr Pink, or more along the lines of the ancient Greek saying that those whom gods wish to destroy they first make mad.
I think Ann has been off the mark for a few years now, she used to have quite a few hits among the misses. Lately just misses and mehs.

I mean, she has a decent point about Palin offering herself up as a brokered convention candidate. But the attack on politicos becoming pundits is dumb--"the Democrats don't do it."
Really? That's the argument?

Ann is jealous of Sarah's hot husband and her nice pack of kids. None of which Ann has been able to accomplish.
No, I don't think that's it, if she had wanted a family she could have got one. As people already pointed out, this is professional. Palin is being asked her opinion about the race more often than Ann.

Bullshit. Agree with her or not, she clearly endorsed a candidate and made her case as to why she thought he'd be the best choice among those remaining.
Did Coulter spend months running a "maybe I'll run, I haven't decided yet" con game for the purpose of seeing her name in the news and scamming supporters out of donation money? No.
Palin skirts around with state-by-state pseudo-endorsements, repeatedly stating that she wants the nominating process to go on as long as possible, preferably to the convention.
Why? Because she knows that her name would be (and is) talked about when the possibility of a brokered convention comes up. Sarah Palin loves herself some bullshit drama and attention, even if it comes at the expense of hurting our chances of beating Obama. There's not the slightest possibility she'd be picked as nominee, but as long as the name "Sarah Palin" gets enough mention, that's all that matters.
The first, last, and every thought Palin has on any given day is "What would benefit me and my 'brand' the most?"

No, not 'all along', as commenters have already noted, gradually over the last few years. As for RINO, I think that's by association with Romney who by the way I don't consider as RINO. He's just a politician with fewer conservative convictions than I would like.

Ann Coulter February 2011- "If we nominate Romney, we lose"
Ann Coulter six months later- Romney is the most conservative conservative that ever lived!
I can get saying, "of all the choices we have Mitt is the best" but she's now praising everything about Romney that she said would lead to his defeat and pissing on people who agree with her original position.
She's an idiot.
This. I don't necessarily agree with the idiot part. But, the rest of it is spot on. I've always liked Coulter, but to completely contradict herself with no explanation of any sort, and then to turn on anyone who brings it up, is just such a disingenuous position that I can't listen to or read her anymore.

Hey, I've got one for you. It's crazy, but just hear me out!
Maybe, just MAYBE, Sarah Palin isn't a charlatan obsessed with her own celebrity. Maybe she was seriously considering running for President throughout last year and after weighing all the pros and cons decided in the end that it was a bad idea.
Crazy, right?

Well if you read up thread, she's been declared to no longer be a conservative based on her support for Romney and attack on Palin. So this isn't really about policy - it's about personalities and intra-party politics. Declaring her to be a Non-Conservative is a form of purging.

Problem is, within the last eight months, Palin has made herself into part of the media more than part of the conservative movement. I'm not agreeing with Coulter, because she's got no room to talk, but I do think Palin is just stirring the pot all the time because she likes the attention and not because she has some overwhelming devotion to the conservative movement.

The liberals never lose focus, they are all always trained on us. So the least you could say against Ann is that she has lost the focus. The enemy is in the Democrat camp, Ann.

Gingrich: Nope. Democrats in general and center Democrats in particular are NOT EVER going to forget what Gingrich did to Bill Clinton while Gingrich himself was engaged in pretty much the very same behavior. The center Democrats loved Clinton. Newt would not get a single crossover Democrat. Without any crossover Democrats, a candidate can't win a national election. Republicans account for 35% of the electorate nationally but much fewer in many states. Winning the Presidency depends on winning the vote in the several states, not national popular vote. Gingrich wouldn't stand a chance except in the reddest of red states.
Santorum: Could *possibly* get some of the center Democrats IF the economy continues to be bad. If the economy starts to pick up toward the elections, the only argument he would have is "Obama sucks worse than I do" and that isn't really a viable election strategy. His conservative rhetoric isn't going to play well to the rest of the electorate and he really doesn't have much else.
Romney: Can easily pick up a huge amount of the independent vote and the center Democrats. He is someone Democrats have crossed over and voted for before. Obama is scared to death of Romney. Romney could take a lot of the old Reagan Democrats and Clinton Democrats who don't much care for how Obama treated Hillary in the last election and aren't all that enamored with Obama to begin with. Romney's problem will be bigotry from those who just can't bring themselves to vote for a Mormon. That will play big in the black community as the areas that tend to have a large Mormon population tend to have few blacks. There just aren't so many black folks in Idaho and Montana and Wyoming. That gives the impression that Mormons are racist but that has started to change recently with a vibrant and growing black Mormon population. And example where that was attempted to be stoked was the false rumors started that Romney campaign officials were attempting to eliminate Allen West's district. That turned out to be completely false but got wide reporting at the time and played into that stereotype.
I believe Romney has a good chance. He will collect more crossover Democrat and Independent votes than Bush did and I believe the Obama campaign is scared to death of him.

I don't believe that for a second. Romney is virtually the poster boy for the eeeeeevil "1%". Obama is salivating at the prospect of running against him.
</blockquote>
He might well have that thought process going but if so, he is breathing a little too much of his own exhaust. That evil 1% meme isn't really getting a lot of traction outside of the choir who would vote for him anyway. It would play well to his base but not very well outside of that.
Maybe if Romney got his money through inheritance or was from a multi-generational family of millionaires ... possibly. Romney's father was a self-made made and Romney is a self-made man. He is the sort of success we should all strive for and hope for our children to achieve.

Nonsense. The Democratic media machine is in full swing and has been for months, and Obama is still tanking in the polls.
Plus, Romney has done what no GOP candidate has done in the modern era: garnered support from educated, upper-income earners. They typically go Democrat.
More of the base voted in 2008 than 2004. The base won't sit this election out or vote third party.
The notion that a moderate can't win is also nonsense. Bush 41 screwed himself with his betrayal on "No new taxes!" Dole had Perot as spoiler. McCain was up against geniuses like Gene Simmons, who said he voted for Obama simply to be able to play a part in electing the First Black President. Obama's first attack ad was against Sarah Palin. It didn't fool anyone, even Democrats.
And Carter and Reagan were neck and neck in the polls until the final week before the elections. Carter even led in plenty of polls. Reagan was no shoe-in or knight riding in on a white horse. That's all historical revisionism.
You're being fed giant bucketfuls of bullshit to demoralize you. Stop sucking it down without questioning it.

Romney became governor of a completely different state. There was no dynasty involved. You might have a valid argument if Mitt had followed his father as Michigan governor.
Romney got a business degree and a law degree ... at the same time. That's pretty hard. He attended Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School at the same time, dude. He took over the Winter Olympics WHILE running a political campaign for governor of MA. The man can walk and chew gum at the same time.

I'm sure Obama believes that the country will respond positively to his class-warfare campaign, but the evidence shows that such an approach will backfire the way everything else Obama has done will backfire.
The Occupy movement imploded. The attack on Limbaugh is in the process of imploding. Going after the "1 percent" in a national election as he rakes in cash from them is a loser on every level, because most people care much more about having more opportunities for themselves, not punishing others for their success.
Obama is great at one thing: misreading the mood of the nation. By November nobody's going to give a shit about how much Romney makes. All they'll want to know is whether or not he can reverse the decline we're in. If he can make a better argument than Obama that he can, he'll win.
The country has seen what Obama has done as president for three years now. They're going to be much more willing to take a chance on anybody but Obama.

"Compromise" was a dirty word to them and they wouldn't face the fact that we couldn't get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don't get it all, some said, don't take anything.
"I'd learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: 'I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average.'
"If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that's what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.-- Ronald Reagan

Yep. That class warfare stuff does not seem to be getting any traction. People don't see our problems as the fault of the rich. What Romney should do during the national campaign is rub the Democrats noses in the mortgage meltdown. Show the people how it was Senate Democrats who blocked legislation several times that would have more closely regulated the GSE's. Show how the Republicans said several times, starting in 2001, that what was going to possibly happen turned out to be prophetic. In 2001, in 2003, and in 2005 the Republicans attempted to do something about the situation. Barney Frank said in the House that any talk of a mortgage bubble was a "figment of the imagination of the Republicans". He should absolutely rub their noses in it. Put this current financial situation squarely in their lap and then point out that they had a majority in the House and a supermajority in the Senate during Obama's term and wasted it. How many jobs bills has the House sent to die in the Senate?
Democrats have a LOT to answer for and Romney should hold their feet to the fire.

It didn't make Mitt Romney rich. He didn't keep one thin dime of his inheritance.
Not one dime. He also took no salary as Governor of MA. He made his money himself. He didn't inherit any of it.
Posted by: crosspatch at March 14, 2012 06:54 PM (ZbLJZ)
He also donated his entire salary, and severance from the 2002 Olympics, the entire thing, including giving and additional $1 million of his own money to the Olympic Committee. He refused a salary as Governor of MA as the state was running a budget deficit.

I'm assuming by your subsequent comment when you tee off on the caricature by the MFM about the Tea Party that you're being tongue and cheeky with the quotes around Conservatives.

The sort that argued for and did indeed refuse to vote for McCain in the last election, for example. Those people actually elected Obama if there were as many of them as claimed they refused to vote for McCain. It is cutting off the nose to spite the face. "I'm not voting for anyone who isn't my brand of conservative" ends up being "I am going to make sure the Democrat gets elected".
Posted by: crosspatch at March 14, 2012 07:20 PM (ZbLJZ)
Nominating Newt, for example, would basically end the political campaign. Obama could phone it in. Same might be true 4 or 5 month from now if Santorum is nominated. Romeny's the only real shot we have and yet he may be torpedoed by the "conservatives" and the general election handed to Obama.
Posted by: crosspatch at March 14, 2012 07:24 PM (ZbLJZ)
That's not the way I remember it. I grew up in a pretty rural conservative area. During those campaigns I was in the military. All I heard from everyone was that they didn't want some California Hollywood actor being President and that he was a higher up in that "commie Hollywood actors union".
Posted by: crosspatch at March 14, 2012 07:26 PM (ZbLJZ)
Watch his first inaugural address. It's on youtube. It is just as pertinent today as it was then.

Because the country clubbers hated Reagan and thought of him as the second coming of Goldwater. And they had to be bribed by having Poppy Bush on the ticket with him that set up the giant fuck job starting in 1989.
Posted by: Captain Hate at March 14, 2012 07:34 PM (iRp9J)
Oh, yeah ... hold on a second and let me see how you actually voted ... ah, here it is ... under Hate, Capt.
Of course I don't have any proof except for what they were saying at the time.
And if Santorum is elected, I will vote for him. I just don't believe he's our best shot at getting Obama's ass out of the White House.

"Well I didn't vote for McCain and I won't vote for Romney. I refuse to vote for a liberal even if he's a republican."
That person is what I call a "conservative". A person who is so conservative they get Democrats elected.

Wow I don't know what to say to that. Carter was such a hapless POS that it's hard to imagine anybody in the military saying that. Too bad this is a dead thread because I'm sure some fellow morons were serving at that time and I'd love to hear their input.
In the civilian population it was waaaaaay different from what you're describing. Reagan was Archie Bunker's candidate on "All in the Family" and scared the shit out of all the libs in Cali and was sure to start WW3 with the commies. I lived through watching that shit and it wasn't until the debates with Carter that I thought he had a chance against that fucking goober. Plus life was so miserable under Carter that a change just had to come.
I think any of the Repub candidates can beat El JEFe because people just don't like misery. I know a lot of people here don't believe that but I'm not the only one thinking that by a long shot.

Shoot, I was at Ft. Bragg sitting on a C-141 at Pope AFB when the rescue attempt failed. If those guys had got stuck in Tehran, the Army was coming loaded for bear. It wouldn't have mattered after that for us WHO got the Republican nomination, it was "anybody but Carter" at that point.
I was talking more about the discussion during the primaries. Even then, most of the guys weren't that political. There weren't a lot of political discussions.

I honestly haven't been following her for the past year or so, her outright praise of Romney was frankly... off-putting, but I figured it was some sort of phase she going through.
At the risk of honking off the moronettes... she a woman, and as such, trying to figure out what's going on in her (or any woman's) head is a total waste of time.
This attack on Palin is the last straw... and leads me to believe she has sold out to the machine because Palin's chief foe is 'machine politics' (see Alaska for further details) in general.
She got to see first-hand the creatures that surrounded McCain, and walked away from them, just as I have walked away from the Ohio GOP... I remember their lack of support for Blackwell, and haven't forgiven them for it.
I stick with the Repubs because they ain't 'rats... that's their chief selling point, and that's where the real fight for control of a political party is.
Demoncrat party is dead and gone; the '68 crowd has finished it's take-over of it, and the marxists and socialists are firmly in control.
Any thought of redeeming that party's soul is an utter waste of time.
The real fight for a party is within the GOP... and I plainly see Coulter sitting in the wrong trench.
Too bad for her... 'cause I ain't taking any prisoners.

Sometimes saying something controversial gets the spotlight put on you which can be important if your income is generated by that spotlight. I take the word charlatan to be something closer to "fraud". I don't think she is being fraudulent but maybe it does fit if it is being used in the sense of someone who is claiming great authority on some subject but doesn't have it.
She certainly has a great following but if she keeps this up, it could evaporate on her. She needs to be a unifying force, not a divisive force. A divisive force by its very nature alienates a portion of its potential supporters. This can lead to an erosion of support overall. Look at what Reagan did. He believed in the American people ... ALL OF THEM. That is why he was so popular across party lines. Reagan picked the most "cucumber sandwich" establishment Republican there was at the time for a running mate.

I'm really confused by Coulter these days. Used to be she had carved out a niche market in spewing all kinds of obnoxious things that the Religious Right really felt, but was too polite to say, or at least they really enjoyed hearing it. Yeah, she had some intelligent things to say here and there, but the other stuff was how she made her living.
Now? Now she's backing a guy that the hardcore Religious Right hates (mostly for being - gasp - Mormon - oh, and having done some mildly liberal things, too), and taking nonsensical swipes at Sarah Palin? I'm not even much of a Palin fan, and the whole thing just sounds nuts.
Posted by: Optimizer at March 15, 2012 07:12 AM (As94z)
I really do think that she is nothing more than an attention whore.
Coulter is upset with Palin because the more people pay attention to Palin, the less attention gets paid to Coulter.

Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just imagining these guys taking turns saying and doing stuff that makes me cringe in fear for them at the prospect of putting any of them up as the nominee. Being a better candidate than Sarah Palin was supposedly such a low bar. Why do so many allegedly more experienced, better-prepared politicians have so much trouble clearing it?
And "tough stuff"? Even if it were a fair and well-founded accusation (and I'm not convinced, especially considering that mouthing off on and interfering in politics is as much or more Ann's livelihood than it is Sarah's) allow me to retort. Meh. Palin's been accused of, among other things, passing her daughter's son off as hers for political gain and inciting political assassination. After that, plain old-fashioned electioneering doesn't even paint the radar.

Cropper @ 356, "Political insight' and constant references to my 'diapers.' Here's the real deal folks. Cropper has his own blog that nobody has bothered to comment on. I say again, NOBODY! So whats Cropper do, he comes over to ACE to claim no one here has any political insight (read his #345 above, again).
Oh, and it gets better. On his own blog, Cropper exhibits absolutely no 'insight', other than his clever little right leaning cartoons and posters. I say again, not only doesn't anyone display interest in Croppers posters and cartoons, Cropper doesn't display any written commentary, on his own insight. I'm guessing the elitist prick is about 44 years old, I'm 61.
I will need diapers soon enough, once again, but only my wife needs to worry about that. Meanwhile, Cropper's failed website is still stinking-up the internet.
