You know looking at that, we're a lot worse off than I originally though.  At first I had thought that we went from a "sickly" during the end of W's term to a "holy shit we're in the crapper" now.

But based on that chart alone, it looks like we went from "could be better, but still not awful." to "Holy shit we're in the crapper."  Or basically a bigger fall than I had thought.

Part of that is probably related to the rhetoric used to sell TARP, which seems to have implied things were far worse than the rality of it (relatively speaking.)

61 Also keep in mind that when you combine the "stimulus" bill and the Fed's QE 1 and QE 2 programs the Obama admin. has thrown upwards of 3 trillion dollars (that's trillion with a "t") at the economy since 2009, yet the broadest measures of the job market really haven't done anything other than circle the drain.  Liberals have force fields surrounding them preventing reality from entering, however, so the foregoing will be explained away either as Bush's fault, or the GOP's fault, or that they didn't spend enough public dollars.

The way the feds measure unemployment has been screwed up for a long time.  Once someone's unemployment benefits run out, they're not counted among the unemployed but having dropped out of the labor force.

There's also the question of how many Baby Boomers are retiring vs how many young people are entering the labor pool.

"Seriously, why aren't Republicans in the House investigating the Labor Dept and their unemployment rate shenanigans?"

Leaving aside the Stupid Party's glaring lack of balls in holding SCFOAMF's feet to the fire on anything, here's a question:

Is monkeying with the numbers for unemployment, GDP, inflation, etc. actually ILLEGAL?  If it's not, why would Democrats ever think twice about cooking those books.  Hell, they'd do it even if it was a felony.

They have a plan.  Sorta like the Cylons.

@73,

Right I get that.  Notice I said the "rhetoric" used to sell TARP.  Keeping mind that was 4 years or more ago now, I just remember being worse off than the graph shows. (Not worse off than now, just worse off than the graph shows, because that graph shows a little dip below average.)  The rhetoric clouds my memory.  (I remember something about liquidity problems stalling investiment.)

106 WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. job market slowed in March as companies hit the brakes on hiring amid uncertainty about the economy's growth prospects. The unemployment rate dipped, but mostly because more Americans stopped looking for work.

Translation:  They've been unemployed for over 99 weeks so their unemployment benefits ran out.

Democrats took control of both houses of Congress in January 2007. Look at that point on the chart.

Recovery: Stocks Post Biggest Weekly Decline in 2012

(CNBC: http://goo.gl/mhFyK)

Because you know, unemployment's down and if the Market were open today I'd imagine it'd reflect that, right?  We'll we'll see on Monday, but if history is any guide:

"Historically, U.S. stocks tend to trade down on the Monday following a Good Friday, with the NASDAQ Composite having the biggest decline." (article)

117 So if Barry were to be re-elected (perish the thought)would he say he inherited the high unemployment from himself? Actually, I know he would not. He would be so busy destroying the rest of America that he would not care. Pray. Pray. Pray.

118 I never get the claims that are made about George Bushes employment record being so lack luster.  The .dotcom boom lead to about 23 million jobs being created on Bill Clinton's watch.  George took over and the .dotcom collapse happened not long after.  He was very well poised to lose millions of jobs as the tech job markets collapsed.  The fact that he ended his term only down a couple hundred thousand from the start is a good thing when you consider what could have been.  Yes, millions of people were losing their jobs but the turn around between finding a new one was averaging about 6 weeks.  Under Obama we've got people looking for jobs at well over 6 months on average.  That's the difference when you have a President that keeps uncertainty at a minimum within the business sectors versus one that wants to "fundamentally transform the United States of America".
