Arlen Specter Would Like Utah to Reelect Orrin Hatch

What does that tell you?

For Arlen Specter, it's not about being a good Republican. It's about holding onto power.

But you don't have to worry about Orrin Hatch. He has an 89% lifetime ACU conservative rating. He only crosses the aisle on the really important things.

From Philip Klein at the Washington Examiner:

As President Bush worked with Congressional Republicans to explode government when they were in power, Hatch voted with him every step of the way. He voted to expand the federal role in education with "No Child Left Behind" and for the biggest expansion of entitlements since LBJ's Great Society in the form of the Medicare prescription drug plan.
In 2005, Hatch voted for the $286 billion highway bill, which contained 6,376 earmarks, including the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere." He then voted against an amendment that would have diverted funds earmarked for the bridge to help pay for Hurricane Katrina relief. In the fall of 2008, Hatch went on to vote for the Wall Street bailout.

And Consrevative, and Republican, are NOT the same thing.

There a large assemblies of protein molecules that come together and go through structural changes to accomplish this. The fuel they use comes from a smaller molecule called ATP. The pictures that they have are derived from atomic structures of the protein molecules (that were probably determined via X-ray crystallography) at different chemical states that represent steps in the mechanism that they are studying biochemically... fit together with computational modeling.

38 Orrin's main argument for being re-elected is his seniority on the finance committee, but the next guy in line behind him (Crapo, per one of our morons here) is a better conservative than Hatch is. Liljenquist seems like a solid guy, but I think it's an uphill battle. Although my sense is that Hatch is not very popular down here in very red Utah County (he usually draws tepid applause at civic events around here), he is a fixture and I think Mitt endorsed him. I kicked some bucks to Dan anyway. I was at some civic events this weekend (a temple ground breaking and a convention center opening) and Chaffetz, who had been quite popular around here last year seems to have squandered some good will by not challenging Hatch. He would have had a much better chance of beating Orrin, imho. I'm pretty irritated he didn't run. Mia Love is also going to need help to win in the general. Even though she's the Republican nominee, she's running against an incumbent Democrat in a newly formed district. If she wins, it will represent a pick up for us in the House.

60 If Utah can't get a solid conservative, what's the point? Hatch spends very little time in Utah. He's a dinosaur who places more importance on making friends with Democrats than on representing his constituents. He's an old man who needs to retire. I think it's worth trying to get Dan in for Hatch. There are no other really important primary battles, so it is not going to detract from any other efforts. And if Dan wins, he WILL beat the Democrat. There's no risk of losing that seat... which makes this much different than some of the other races that caused so much contention last time.

The obvious point would be that his lab is being propped up by an un-Godly-expensive technical infrastructure.

Which, among other things, means that the modern "science" lab has a insatiable desire for grant money.

PS: There is also a vastly more subtle point, which is that he & his lab might be relying on that technical infrastructure even more than they realize.

I once read someone speculating that the reason there is so little variation in automobile designs these days is because all of the design studios are using [essentially] the same CAD/CAM software suites [software suites which can cost in the $100,000's or $1,000,000's of dollars], and those CAD/CAM "templates" were pushing them all in the same direction in their designs ["designs" which were in reality little more than rote instantiations of the pre-packaged templates].

I actually think some of that might be more of a result of them trying to get the most aerodynamic design to help with fuel efficiency. Well there is only so much you can do with tweaks while attempting to keep the aerodynamics there.

And don't you just love it when its so frozen shut and you try to open it that you break the door mechanism inside making it unable to open. I did that with a Cutlass Supreme. Broke the door on the outside. So I had to open the back door to get at the handle inside the front door. THEN it happend on the passeger side door. And I had locked the car and the geniuses don't have external locks on the back seat doors. And the unlock button on my keychain was shit and wouldn't unlock any door except the driver door. So it sat in my work parking lot for the weekend until we could get out there to fish through a piece of metal to hit the unlock button inside the car.

130 Those who claim cars are all samey-looking forget that every decade had a similar look among its cars. Pick a decade and choose any ten models from the same category (four door sedan or pickup truck, for instance) and you'll see they have plenty of style in common. New materials and molding techniques have their influence as the designers get more options to choose from. And much of it is simply fashion.

It's easy for set designers on movies to cue the audience on what era the story is set just by the cars lining the streets. In 'Jacob's Ladder' one of the big hints to the ending was that all of the cars were almost a decade older than when the main story was supposedly happening.

You're painting too broad a brush here. 3-D visualization is exceedingly useful for modelling and understanding fit/form/function. I don't know what software they're using, but there's open source software and free proprietary software that enables recreation and visualization of defined structures. I've not played with any in some years, but RASMOL and its variants come to mind. Once you get the atomic structure and angles measured out, modelling is a trivial exercise particularly if it's just for show so that humans can understand it. So, their graphics costs could well be trivial in an industry where a single microfuge tube of enzyme could run in the many thousands of dollars (or maybe not be purchasable at all).

One really cannot grasp the interaction of enzymes fully without seeing a 3D-representation. 2D works at a chemical level, but to visualize the manipulation of an enzyme complex, nothing beats a 3D model. A picture is worth a thousand words, so it's actually a fantastic shorthand to communicate with peers and those aiming to be. Of grant monies wasted, and it's legion, a lab studying enzyme complexes, gene replication, and the intervention of drug therapy at the genetic level could waste money in quite a few worse ways.

IOW, the graphics are very helpful (perhaps integral and irreplaceably efficient) and quite probably not the exorbitant money sink one would imagine. As to the costs of acquiring a timely, measurable bound state complex and getting the crystallographic dimensions down, that's a different story.

149 The DNA stuff is about ways to unwind a DNA helix and the reconstruct it via a process known as transcription. A phase of replication. That's a segment where the DNA molecule, the information, a long strand double helix of proteins, is unwound and separated into strands of RNA and then uses what they refer as "motors" to recombine into new DNA strands. They are talking about the use of "molecular motor proteins" which ease difficulties which arise during the unbinding and rebinding process. Things can knot, bundle, misalign, etc.

In addition the issue arises of the use by some protein sections of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) to facilitate some changes such as shepherding a segment of DNA duplex through a break in another segment of DNA so that it can be re-segmented or de-segmented somewhere else along the DNA strand.

The paired proteins within the inner part of the DNA are unwound, melted in another way iof saying, and rewound in another configuration. Then the paired proteins, always pairing with their partnered proteins reattach and the DNA strand is completed, at least that segment, and rewound.

They are referring to specific eukaryotic, bacterial and archaeal motors. The Archaea and bacteria are prokaryotes and eukaryotes are, well, eukaryotes. The archaeas have 3 RNA polymerases, bacteria have one, and eukaryotes also have three. Archaeas have only be recognized as distinct in the last 20 or so years and are related to the extremophiles like the bacteria and such that live in hot water vents, volcanoes and any of the Kardashian sisters.

They're kind of looking at how these different mechanisms de-construct and re-construct RNA and DNA, using ATP and ADP. Adenosine Diphosphate.

None of this applies to Sphincter or Orrin DOWN tha Hatch, as they are made of fossilized dog crap and there is no recoverable DNA left in them.

And here, AnonymousDrivel is absolutely right. The actions of enzymatic knives to resegment and desegment RNA and DNA is best seen visually. You can describe it all day long but these illustrations are useful. A helluva sight better use than another boondoggle California high speed train or Dog eater Vacay.

here, at least, if that's gubmint money spent, it actually served a viable purpose.
