Bad Weather Today (Bumped and Updated)
— rdbrewer

Update: Five confirmed dead in Woodward, Oklahoma, where a large tornado passed through the western part of town. Two were children. 20 in the hospital, 10 critical. One missing. They're saying the sirens might not have sounded--possibly because the fast-moving tornado disabled them.

The sirens are critical at night when TV's and radios are off and people are asleep. They're loud enough to wake most people.

Right now, there is a 1200 mile lone line of thunderstorms crossing the middle of the country. It runs from the Big Bend area of Texas (next to Mexico) all the way to Minnesota. These straight-on thunderstorm lines typically have high winds and a lot of rain, but they usually don't spawn tornadoes. But when a storm cell breaks off from the main line, that's when tornadoes are highly likely (under the atmospheric conditions we have right now). That's what happened in Woodward, Oklahoma. A super-cell broke off from the main line and spun up what they're calling a large tornado, although we can't know how truly bad it was until daylight.

Channel 9 in Oklahoma City had an experienced storm chaser and ex-fireman, Marty Logan, "walking the storm through." He was tagging along behind, watching the storm move through town. His audio report was very well done, compelling, reminiscent of the Herbert Morrison's dramatic Hindenburg disaster reporting. It was thorough and descriptive, yes, but not emotional like Morrison's iconic report. Worth listening to if it's replayed somewhere.

He could see the tornado because of flashing light from arcing power lines.

If you're keeping track at home, check out this map commenter "Wheatie" found. You can scroll around and go to other parts of the country. Zoom in and out. There are different display options. The coolest thing is the links to streaming storm chaser cams.

Here is the National Weather Service radar. You can click on it for a local map. There are regional maps down below. Up top, you can enter a specific location for conditions and a forecast.

7 Random thought, I miss Breitbart.  I wonder how he would have handled the media malfeasance on the Zimmerman/Martin story.  Related, I wonder if he could have made a dent in bringing the racebait industry down. Al Sharpton, I'm looking at you.

18 I've been wondering -- are there enough gamers here to justify a weekly or bi-weekly videogame thread?  I've just recently gotten into it (with Oblivion, just FYI) and I'm looking to pick up ideas for other games, equipment, playing tips, and whatever else I come up with from more experienced gamers.  Since my Sprint aircard isn't terribly reliable, and I have to keep the landline free for medical calls (SHUT UP, you *%#! politicians!), I'm most interested in single-player RPGs in fantasy or SF.

I'd ask in the ONT, but at my age, I'm asleep when it's going strongest!

Woah. I don't think I've ever been mentioned in a thread topic before. ....Thanks, rdbrewer.

Looks like Kansas and Nebraska are getting pounded today. ....So far, we're getting off light today here in Ok.

There's nothing funny about bad weather. ....But something kinda funny that did happen once, was when the OKC news channel 5....ABC local affiliate....got hit by a small tornado and messed up them up while they were on the air...

Their picture went out but the sound was still on. You could hear: ....."Uh...are we on the air?"  "Screen is blank...don't think so."  ...."Damn! Look at the parking lot!" ...."Uh my wife just called. We're still hot for sound, guys. Shut up!"

Since then....that channel has been rather attentive to their storm coverage.

Heh.

I've seen some on the ONT (the following morning, when reading it over coffee), and have even picked up a few things -- I've gotten Morrowind and Skyrim based on what I read there, and am thinking seriously about Fallout 3, but I have daydreams of concentrated information and recommendations, rather like the Sunday book thread (which I really enjoy!).

Heck, I'd volunteer to do one myself, but I'm such a newbie I'd spend more time going "Say, what?" than being useful.

Bell pepper plant, habaneros, crook-neck squash, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, Big Boy tomatoes, English cucumbers, jalapenos, red bell pepper, French lavender and English lavender (just because), Red New Mexico pepper and something that the tag thingy fell out of and I'll have to find out later what it is.

And a nice former Navy underwater demo guy gave me some lettuce and broccoli from his garden.

Sorry I am not a fan of it because it's like Ernest Hemingway's writing style.  Stream of consciousness. And that is when it actually has something to convey as opposed to the chattering Bratz girls going LOL and OMFG over Justin Beiber.

Our society is so condensing the news/information cycle with its technology, there is no longer any time-lag to allow thought.  Its instant re-transmit with even greater outrage.

Actually, I planted late.  Everyone around me already are harvesting some things.  One guy told me that by July it will be too hot for the large tomatoes to do well.  Whatev.  Next year I won't have so much ground prep and can get things in earlier.

(By the way, we're in coastal Georgia, so it's past planting season, although this past week we've had unseasonably cool weather.....which was nice.)

114 What I really hate about Twitter is the ability to block people. You feel me? For instance, some turd like Keith Olbermann can block people but he can continue to spew his bile from his account. 205 Nevergiveup.  Actually it can be laid at his feet.

Everytime Michelle and the kids travel ahead of the President somewhere, agents are needed earlier to make sure things go smoothly.  Plus agents to guard the First Family.  And more agents to guard the President.

When Malia went to Mexico, agents were dispatched just for her and her chums.

Every trip of the First Family and President is a meticulous exercise that takes months to plan, coordinate, and manage.

This globe-trotting vacationing family has been putting the Secret Service through a high operations tempo and there are only so many agents who can be detailed to guard the President, the First Family, Vice President and his family, candidates for President.

As an example if you drive your car beyond it's oil change, you are risking something happening.  Same with agents being run so hard for so long.  Something will break down, they might miss a possible threat because they have been worn down.

Power Grab for Natural Gas – New Executive Order

It was Friday the 13. If you are superstitious, then the new Executive Order issued yesterday,  “Supporting Safe and Responsible Development of Unconventional Domestic Natural Gas Resources” must give you pause.

The order states, “While natural gas production is carried out by private firms, and States are the primary regulators of onshore oil and gas activities, the Federal Government has an important role to play by regulating oil and gas activities on public and Indian trust lands, encouraging greater use of natural gas in transportation, supporting research and development aimed at improving the safety of natural gas development and transportation activities, and setting sensible, cost-effective public health and environmental standards to implement Federal law and augment State safeguards.”

Because natural gas produced 25 percent of our energy in 2011, the federal government must control this source of energy in order to deliver on the promise of making gasoline prices rise to $10 per gallon, bankrupt the coal industry, and cause energy prices to skyrocket.

I have a feeling some of the things I do for entertainment would likely bore you to tears. I know they do for most other people. I own a classic muscle car and I've done my share of drag racing back in the day, so for me that will always be "true" racing. Much as I'm sure and Indy car driver thinks Indy is true racing, or a NASCAR guy would say his racing is true racing, etc. But for me the one thing I've always liked is watching a classic Ford go head to head with Mopar, or Chevy - etc. The cars are the thing for me. They have a character all their own. In NASCAR they all pretty much look the same. I understand the reasoning behind it - but for me it takes most of the joy out of the viewing experience. But I guess NASCAR has enough fans that they must be doing something right.. lol..

Also, I believe they're bound by the UCMJ, which doesn't just allow you to do stuff that's legal in other countries. Army guys in Korea can't stroll into one of their drugstores and buy crazy shit over the counter. American businesses are also bound by laws that forbid behavior abroad that's illegal in America.

It's not one that is enforced, or at least it didn't used to be enforced much back in my day, but if they wanted to ding you with it, they sure could. 251 This really burns me up. From the UW alum email update: "And the Tea Party, which Parker has studied in depth? “That’s not what patriotism should be about,” he says. “It should be about sacrifice—putting country above individual interests, above self. Without fail, the Tea Party gravitates to the more individualistic approach in which they put self over country.” Arrgghhh!

252 "Signs with Mel Gibson: aliens will invade the house. But first..." However, curiously though these scientifically advanced creatures have mastered faster than light travel and have navigated the far reaches of space to get here, they still require crop circles to point out where they are going on the planet's surface. I guess despite all their advanced technology the "folding map" was beyond their comprehension, much less GPS. But rest assured these are highly scary incredibly advanced aliens - as evidenced by the fact that to them water acts like acid, and they decided it would be a good idea to invade a planet where 70% of the surface is covered with the stuff.

284 Re 222, Rain of Lead --

I'm on a PC -- AMD Athlon II processor, nVidia graphics, Win7 OS.  It's a mid-range eMachines, about 2 or 3 years old.  I'm currently running through Oblivion for about the 4th time, getting ready to install Skyrim and maybe Morrowind.

My PC gaming before was limited to the original Might and Magic.  Loved it, but the computer requirements got beyond my budget, so I had to quit.  Before that, I ran a weekly episodic Dungeons and Dragons game at Ramstein AB, Germany, while my husband was stationed there.v

I've recently thougt about a PS3 or equivalent, but haven't the foggiest where to start looking, or if I'm willing to give up the PC' s console capability, since that's saved me in Oblivion a few times.  Though the Thieves' Guild questline hasn't let me go past about the 3d quest anyway.

"saw upthread that you were asking about fallout 3
what do ya want to know?"

Anything I can find out, actually.  I'm not that much into post-apocalyptic fiction, but the idea of running around in a destroyed DC has me sitting here with an evil grin on my face.  The Amazon info says it's an open game like Oblivion, with something I don't quite understand about moral choices (?)  (And whose morals, anyway?  In my current situation, I'm pretty harmless, unless my family is threatened, but in a post-apocalyptic scenario and 50 years younger, that wouldn't be necessarily so.)

In other words, is it worth the money?  I'll get the gaming guide, too, of course; I haven't learned to think like a game designer yet, and don't like getting killed every time I turn around.

322 Once upon a time, between tokes, someone very wise told Bammy that he should join a church in Chicago. Church? said the marxist/muslim scoamf, why would I want to do that? Toke. Well, said the wise Mr. Ayres, you want a political future don't you? We've know for a while that the brothas and sistas love Jesus because their mamas loved Jesus. We can't get them to give it up so we just tweek it a little --- for example we keep jesus and tell them that jesus was black and that he wanted all the white man's wealth that was robbed from the black man given back. Jesus wants the black man liberated and given all the stolen money!! We call this "black liberation theology."

Hey, says Bammy. Toke. That goes well with my true belief system called "Critical Race Theory". That's marxist too! What a coincidence! With that one we want to tweek the constitution--well, rewrite it really, so that all the ill gotten white man's wealth is redistributed. Toke. It's the same. Ok. I'll join a church as long as it's really a liberation theology/critical race theory church. But does that exist?  Ho-ho says wise Mr. Ayres, indeed it does. Bammy. Toke. I'll take you to see the Reverand Wright. He hates jews but he's going to make you look more mainstream because he says he believes in black jesus but we know that's just our beloved marxism. Toke. Excuse me while I send a care package to SirhanSirhan.

is there an application process?

Seems to be a wide-open field. ....Willingness to put yourself in the path of an oncoming tornado is probably a basic requirement.

From what I've observed over the years, it is the cannon-ball catchers who get out there and get the best videos, are the ones who make the most. ....One amazing video can get you as much as $50,000.00 for example.

There are free-lancers. And there are storm chasers that work for local news channels....which is year round work. I see those guys out covering ice storms, wind storms, you name it.

It takes a special sort of arrogant idiocy for liberals to champion both the idea of moral relativism (with the most primitive, barbaric, belligerent cultures around) but, at the same time, to be able to claim that they constantly come up with "Universal Laws" of morality.

I hate liberals almost as much as they hate themselves.

it is a fun shooter game

you get options you came make a "good choice"

or a neutral choice or an "EVIL" choice

all of which have an effect on the games storyline and possable ending

this game has 6-7 different ways that it can end depending on the choices you make and how you play

go to youtube and enter fallout 3 walkthrough to get a better idea

also get the game of the year edition

it has the 5 extra expansion packs for the game at no extra charge

I think now you can get it at was-mart for about 20 bucks

I boycott the commie enviro-whacko NWS and use AccuWeather instead. Bastardi, a real scientist, was their chief meteorologist for years. WeatherUnderground is supposed to be another good alternative weather site, especially if you're stuck with a dial-up or DSL connection.

BTW -- "Big Government" Santorum was trying to push AccuWeather over the NWS (privatizing weather forecasting) during his last senate bid and was crucified for it.

Personally, I've found AccuWeather far more accurate for where I live than the NWS or The Weather Channel.

360 chemjeff, I am stumped as to what to recommend for you, garden book wise.

I agree with whoever posted about the basic gardening books by Sunset being good (make sure you get something for your zone). The Ortho series are also good, and  the Taylor series. As mentioned, there is also a Gardening for Dummies book.

Sunset:

http://tinyurl.com/84vqpbh

Taylor:

http://tinyurl.com/7mmymd3

http://tinyurl.com/79xpmtu

Ortho:

http://tinyurl.com/7zzefnr

http://tinyurl.com/83yft2w

The thing is, if you go for any basic gardening books, they're probably going to include stuff on flowers/veggies. A basic landscaping book is probably going to have more than you want on hardscaping (fences, walls, etc)

I am wondering if you just need to go to the library and check out books on the individual maintenance things.....lawn care, pruning etc?

A basic gardening book should cover that all briefly, but I think I'd try the library before buying any.

I don't have of these books, but the publishers are all-top notch.

It still had a lot of work that needed to be done on it. They were asking 200K and it needed at least another 100K in work.  And it was also in a bad location.

Five members of the U.S. military assigned to support the Secret Service during President Barack Obama's visit to Colombia violated curfew and may have been involved in "inappropriate conduct," the U.S. Southern Command said on Saturday.

One day after the U.S. Secret Service said it had sent some agents home from Cartagena for allegations of misconduct - which Colombian police said involved prostitutes - the Southern Command said it was punishing military members involved in "inappropriate conduct" at the same hotel in which the agents had stayed.

410 Nothing in my area right now but the line is pushing this way. I'm straight S. of Topeka smack in the middle of Osage county. Concerned for the folks in Salina right now.

411 Shrimpy, that is soooooo gorgeous! Is it a reproduction, or a real one?

412 She is like a completely different dog when she's here, she even let Wolverine pet her last night.

Sounds like she's happy to be able to give up her role protecting you.  She's content to let Stuck be "alpha"

Yep - watched a tornado coming across a valley towards us once when I was ~8.  Went back up about 1/2 mile from our house.  Nasty storms.  Cool to watch as long as no property/human/animal damage.

Har har what if we all order a dozen of these and cut the NOT A and the Blue banner at the bottom off, then it simply says  REPUBLICAN in Red White and Blue and the commie bastiges get to fund our campaigning!

419 Re 400 Rain of Lead --

No joke!  I got Oblivion GOTY for about $20, and I know I've spent somewhere between 400-600 hours on it, even without more than touching the Shivering Isles expansion.  I must admit I do love the Knights of the Nine expansion ... that's my favorite kind of character.

And I'll definitely look up that TheNexus -- I'd really like to have a couple of armor stands for heavy armor Yssha doesn't use, but is too beautiful to sell.

So yeah, as soon as I get another Amazon gift cart (around the 18th) I'll send for Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3.

I do appreciate your help -- it's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for!

424 I wonder if there's a way for the morons to be notified by email in the event of an emergency and a fellow moron in their area needs help. Have chainsaw, boots and gloves - will travel.

Thinking of Bob Dylan's lyric "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind's blowing."

The weather map needs a couple of layers to show politicians by district, deaths from gang violence and levels of deficit spending.

434 The sirens are critical at night when TV's and radios are off and people are asleep. They're usually enough to wake people. No, no, NO!! Sirens are to warn people that are outside. They are not to be relied on when you are indoors. That's what weather radios are for - you need to have one if you're in an area that gets active weather you should have one, preferably with SAME technology to raise the signal/noise ratio.

435 Last night was prom night in Woodward, OK. ....So a lot of kids were at the prom there when the tornado hit, on the other side of town. Probably saved some lives.
