Bedlam! In! Norman!
— Gabriel Malor

America's best-named college rivalry is back this afternoon. My beloved No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowboys face the line-jumpers from Norman, the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners.

The Story of Bedlam:

In the Year of our Lord 1900, Oklahoma A&M (as Oklahoma State was then called) veterinary medicine professor Dr. L.L. Lewis brought together a group of students to participate in the first Oklahoma Territory Track and Field Meet. I say Oklahoma "Territory" because, you will recall, Oklahoma wasn't yet a state when this rivalry began.

Held on May 4, 1900, the event included several smaller Oklahoma schools -- Alva Normal College, Central Normal of Edmond, Kingfisher College -- and, of course, Oklahoma University. The prize of the tournament was a silver cup donated by a local jeweler named Douglas. A&M won the meet and returned to Stillwater with the traveling trophy.

In 1901, A&M won again, and a third consecutive win would mean permanent retirement of the Douglas Cup in Stillwater.

The third meet was held on May 23, 1902, with the Aggies winning the most points. Oklahoma, sore at their drubbing, filed a protest based on the pole vault competition not having been completed due to darkness. Nevertheless, A&M claimed the Douglas Cup and returned victorious to Stillwater.

The next day the Sooners held their own pole vault competition and declared themselves the victors of the tournament. Several weeks later, the Douglas Cup was stolen from its place of honor in a glass case at the A&M chemistry lab. Suspecting that Sooners had taken the Cup, a group of A&M students made a daring raid to Norman where they retrieved the Cup and buried it under Old Central for safekeeping.

Ten years later, when excavation was being done for a new classroom building, the trophy was found. Today the Douglas Cup resides safely in OSU's Heritage Hall.

Bedlam football starts in Norman in an hour two hours. You can get the game on ESPN.

And just right back in my own oatsy days, we rode the shoulders of athletic giants like Preswell "Pinky" Whistleworth, Harold "Hopper" Harefoot and even Pete "Shuttlecock" Mack-Hesketh!

112 years? A rivalry? A nonce! A mere nonce I say!

Absolutely right. No Bushes, no McCains, not Mutt Rombleys. We've tried the sellout "maybe-a-moderate-will-sway-undecideds" game, and it didn't friggin' work. Dubya did win, but we lost, even then.

After Choom Boy is through paying off his affirmative-action constituency (see Breitbart) there probably won't be enough left in the cupboard for anyone else, and we can expect to see pretty horrific confiscation rates on the poor bastards who are working hard and doing well for themselves in the very near future.

I don't think it will matter much WHO we select in '16. Won't be much left but ashes and unpaid bills, anyway.

--------------

Yup.

Jeb Bush doesn't even have GWB's charisma and 'likeability' going for him.

But the most prohibitive thing...is the way that GWB did not defend himself, and let the media define him, remaining foolishly mute and letting conservatives become demoralized by it.

The days of being 'too noble to fight for yourself' are gone.

The party elites are either too stubborn, or too stupid, to understand this.

We need a conservative leader who will fight the lies, and fight for himself and for us.

96 Don't get to watch OU vs OSU. No ESPN. Will be stuck with Bama vs Auburn. Go Auburn Go USC Go whoever plays Oregon Yeah, I know. Fat chance on all 3 but...

97 I'm up for trying something different. Like running an actual conservative. If that fails, I'm moving to Hong Kong, and y'all can run as many Bush's as you like. Posted by: Soona at November 24, 2012 02:23 PM (gEpFm) Bring back some sweet-and-sour pork. And don't forget the hot mustard.

99 >...If I were a Democrat campaign strategist, I would be praying that the GOP nominate George Bush's brother for President

remember- in this scenario, I am putting together a political message aimed at Stupid People. People so stupid they wouldn't even notice that my candidate is running against someone who hasn't been President for 8 years.

Oh, really?  How about Perry?  Oh, yeah.  Has a TX drawl and can't  seem to talk straight after back surgery and his mind on his state burning (literally).  It didn't matter that his record was about as conservative as Reagan's.

Sarah Palin:  'Nuff said.

Newt Gingrich:  I'll admit he's not a true conservative, but he's an asshole and knows how to handle the press  and rehabilitate budgets.  We needed an asshole as president this time around.  We'll need one in 2016 too.

Michelle Bachmann:  Crazy.  She made gaaafffffes  (but she's as conservative as they come).

We had a choice.  But shallowness beat out depth.

118 My Grandmother who was one of the first school teachers in Oklahoma graduated from Alva Normal.  Many other family members graduated from OU and one or two from OSU.  I went to neither school and grew up cheering for both of them.  My late husband graduated from OSU (BS) and OU (MS).  His Dad and his Dad's brothers (OSU graduates all) were bar none, the most vile, obnoxious OSU fans ever to wear shoe leather.   They made being in my in-laws home during any Bedlam game a sheer and utter misery.

I was working on a project in Atlanta.  When everyone found out I was from Oklahoma, they felt compelled to make remarks about OU.  At the time, Boone Pickens had not yet poured all that money into OSU and their football team was not ranked.  One guy in particular played for Auburn and he was towering over me and glowering at me saying, "I suppose you think OU is all that, huh?"  I sweetly replied, "They are pretty good, tell me again how many National Championships Auburn has."  He did not speak to me for weeks.

Two teams that I root for have a chance to end their own crappy seasons by encrappening the season of their opponents. BC (2 wins) is playing their ex-head coach at Bowl-bound NC State and Wake Forest (5 wins) is playing perennial SEC doormat Vanderbilt at the end of one of Vandy's best seasons in years.Wake would become Bowl eligible (but probably not worthy) with a win. All BC has to play for is pride.
