Bill Whittle's Afterburner On Breitbart
— andy

This video has generated some strong pro and con reactions among Ace and the cob loggers as well as in the conservative Twittersphere.

I was wondering what the Moron Horde thought of it.

Watch, vote and discuss in the comments Breitbarts.

4 I watched it a few days ago, and I can understand the negative reactions.  Bill is essentially telling Andrew to not be Andrew.  But I can understand his perspective, we would all rather have Andrew still be with us.

5 I wish Andrew had slowed down a bit and taken care of himself. At even 10% of his speed, he would be faster than all.

9 Spot on, Bill! I see Twitter and Facebook addicts going down the same path as Andrew, all over the place. It's good to take a step back and breathe once in a while. Make time to disconnect, take a jog, let things you've accumulated in your brain all day absorb/sink in. We're not machines!

Posted by: Swanny at March 04, 2012 06:55 AM (ZthpO)

10 I'm a little 'meh' on this - while I do understand his position and as Dave in FL said, we'd all rather have AB with us still, part of what made him so great was how he refused to let up on the things that got him fired up. I have to say, if Breitbart had followed Bill Whittle's advice, he might still be here (which isn't bad), but who knows if he'd have had the 'Big' impact he did.

11 So Whittle says "Don't let it kill you" and people get pissed?

Posted by: nickless at March 04, 2012 06:59 AM (MMC8r)

12 That was horrible. Hey Andrew, tone it down, chill out, and stop doing what you do so well. Fuck that shit. Guess what Bill, we're all going to die someday., stop being a pussy about your own mortality. Andrew was a guy who went full-tilt all the time. Doesn't mean you or I or anyone else have to do the same, just be who you are. If Andrew had been the cool calm relaxed guy who would just needle the MFM once in a while then go drop off the radar for a few weeks to chill, he wouldn't have been Andrew and we wouldn't give nearly as much of a shit that he's gone. Would he have lived longer if he put down the twitter? Maybe, maybe not, but he definitely wouldn't have left the impact that he did.

Posted by: mugiwara at March 04, 2012 07:00 AM (hGb5f)

13 I gave it unfavorable, but mostly because life isn't so great that it's worth living for in particular, and keeping yourself busy with something you like and/or to distract you, and then having a massive heart-attack would be about ideal and the best one could hope for.

If you want to be healthy and live longer, sure, it's good advice.

Andrew being andrew lived his life at 1,000  committed to doing right. amazing incredibly driven, still if he could be here still we'd be better off.

A heart attack at 42 (which Breitbart had) is usually a widowmaker. I was also amazed to find out he was only 43--he looked far older. I'm grateful for the time we had with AB, but I wish he would have taken the steps necessary to make it longer.

Three takeaways from the Whittle piece: 1) take care of yourself; 2) step away from this crap every once in a while; 3) the media are the enemy. I give that a favorable.

Well, not intentionally. But there is a strong argument to be made, I think, that life-affirming policies, especially having children, cause more harm than is warranted.

Andrew may well have preferred to live in such a way that he enjoyed and loved it than sit twiddling his thumbs away from the fight.

Sure fighters die younger, as a rule, but ... so what?

33 We need to become as organized as the left. Many posters have been saying that they have contacted Carbonite and are canceling their memberships. That is all well and good but it is reactive and defensive. We need to be ready to go after the left's mouth pieces with as much energy as the left does ours. Ace you and your co-bloggers need to step up and help lead us. You have the technical skills to create a one stop place for us to contact the left's financial backers. You and the rest of the leading Conservative bloggers need to create a database of all left wing sponsors and have a simple link that we can click on to file complaints quickly and easily. I am sad to say that many of us out here are somewhat computer and technology challenged and we need your help in order to help the cause. Ace you and other conservative bloggers like Michelle Malkin and Glenn at Instapundit and others need to point us in the right direction so that we focus on one or two sponsors (especially at first) so that we can have an immediate impact. Ace please, please step up and take on Andrew's example and help us your moron army take the fight to the enemy. Otherwise we will be picked off one by one by the left until there is no one left.

40 I agree with Treacher.  I don't even see what's so insulting or terrible about this.  Breitbart would still be Breitbart if he took an hour or two out of every day to focus on his health.  And his family would still have him around, too.

I mean, it's not like I'm BLAMING him for not having done that or anything, but Jesus, is it really so terrible to say that it'd be nice if we all focused on our health a bit?  I mean, we say that to Ace all the time, right?

42 Look, it's hard enough having a life one actually really, deeply likes. If one achieves that, I say go for it, and don't obsess about longevity. If longevity happens, bonus, but there's never a guarantee for that, so focus on enjoyment, if possible.

Having had a heart attack, I viewed the vid favorably.  I have accomplished much after my wake up call.  I saw with a fresh vision my loved ones concern for me as husband, Dad and friend.  Breitbart was a brilliant man and an asshole for ignoring the signs that were right in front of him warning of his early doom.  He cheated his wife, children and friends of his presence.  If he had only taken a small percent of his time to care from his scedule to take care of himself he could still be fighting the fight.

.

If Whittle's vid makes  people aware of the consequences of ignoring warning signs then it is one of the more valuable bits of work he's done.

50 "what are you talking about?"

It's very simple, really. Every person will lose everything and everyone they care about, inevitably, and most will live with this knowledge and fears throughout their lives; the 'lucky' ones to live to old age will see it over and over again.

They will also probably go through a great deal of misery during life and death.

ALL of that is caused by being born. All of that can be avoided by not bringing a person into existence.

Posted by: Random at March 04, 2012 07:18 AM (YiE0S)

51 Everything Whittle does is a Meh. He's a slightly less interesting Glenn Beck. I never understand the blogosphere's fascination with these conservative converts that just regurgitate history to everyone like they're stupid. Just because everything is new to them doesn't make them "smart".

53 One's not a  'douche' or a 'pussy' to say slow the hell down.

How about this? Fighting hard on the right and necessary battles. And being wise in picking the right ones. There's no need to reply every time some progressive turd calls you a 'conservative c*nt'. If we all did that, we'd become the left - unproductive and without jobs. These people are miserable. They have no lives. And often times no soul. Why become them? Mock them and then say 'goodnight shitstain'. Don't go 12 rounds. There's no point. Really, there's not.

I think the approach that would be most effective is the one Stuck on Stupid took this week at his job. If you're unfamiliar  w/his story, it's in the 'L.A. Moron Meet-Up' thread.

58 >>> One's not a 'douche' or a 'pussy' to say slow the hell down.

I would just say this: It's a value judgment, not a right or wrong thing. Some may value doing what they want, when they want, the way they want to do it more; and others value longevity and feeling good over the long haul more so they do more preventative type things.

It isn't like all humans have the same nervous systems.

Andrew was a spontaneous kinda guy, really, and a man of action. Fighters and alpha-male types often die young, and not only in Homo sapiens --- in other primate species' as well.

He's provided for his children. I am not sure having children is an unqualified good, but it would appear to be the purpose of life to the degree there is one. His survival was always impossible; it's about his genes and his legacy.

And he has both in play still. Many people never even GET them in play.

People require a healthy diet, exercise, quality sleep, and ways to manage stress or they will die young.

Until the agenda of the commie inspired MFM is exposed and debunked nothing will change.

Yeah. I mean, it's an option. It's a value judgment. And you're always deciding under uncertainty either way. There is no guarantee that would work, and as it happens, Andrew created more change than probably any person reading or writing about him here.

So I'm reluctant to give him hard and fast rules under the circumstances.

HE LIKED being an on the go kind of guy. Maybe he'd have lived longer, but not enjoyed it as much? Is that even an improvement?

Posted by: Random at March 04, 2012 07:29 AM (YiE0S)

I tend to think that Andrew worked so hard because, by and large, he was the only one out there fighting the kind of fight that he knew had to be waged.  I don't mean this as a slight to anyone who's in the trenches.  Ace certainly has done excellent work, and I highly commend him for his weiner beat down  :-)

But Andrew was THE high profile person.  He was the one trying to show us all the way.  He carried a lot on his shoulders.  He was at the forefront of the lines in this war, and like any good soldier, he wasn't about to take R&R in the heat of battle.

83 Let's use a racing as an analogy.  You've got a guy who drives like a demon, leads the pack but doesn't give his mechanics the time they need to service the machine his life depends on. After racing for three years his wheels come off in a turn or the engine blows and the flipping careening car sheds parts at 200+mph hurting fans and fellow drivers.  Meanwhile the yellow flag slows thing up while the mess gets cleaned up.  Afterward the race continues and someone else, someone who took care of his machine wins.  Then everyone eulogizes the guy who made racing very interesting but hurt a lot of people in the end.

84 I went with 'meh'. I'd rather go out, passionately engaged in the things that (for me) make life worth living than live a long life where I felt like I was not doing something of value. I see Whittle's point about unplugging and making some time for yourself and I don't disagree that this is the wise choice for folks who's live is about 'living' over 'doing'. Not a bad way to go through life, but it ain't for everyone. I never knew Breitbart, but what I saw appeared to be a guy who thrived on what he did while also making more time for family and friends that most people who never accomplish 10% of what he did. It may be true that, had he made different choices, he might have been around longer; but to me that's a straw man. None of us know when our time will be up. If it wasn't a heart attack, it could have been a bus, a liberal with a knife or gun, or anything else. I've never heard from anyone that Breitbart, or his family, or his friends were unhappy with who he was or the life he lived. On the contrary, loved him or hated him, everyone agrees that he had some impact on their life- even millions who never met him. Who could ask for more than this from any life?

85 No, I'm pointing out parents inevitably create a situation where their offspring will develop hopes and dreams and lose everything one way or the other. Posted by: Random at March 04, 2012 11:25 AM (YiE0S) Certainly, that can be cured by extinction, but then who would be around to enjoy the absence of suffering? Sure, foreswear children because someday their existence and yours will lead to sadness. Then what about friends? Lovers? Avoid them, too. With what are you left?

Enthusiastic clapping at the beginning when he was getting all of his pro-Israel platitudes out of the way. Less now, when he's talking about Iran. Lots of nose-in-the-air sneering--not sure if he knows he does that, but you'd think his handlers would tell him.

My opinion is the number of people who, like me, just went along thinking "well what can little old me do" so we leave it to the ABs, Aces, etc to get out the truth is vastly higher than the folks burning themselves out. We need an army of former audience only folks to write that letter to the editor, put a post on FB, whatever we CAN do when the media ignores F&F and tells us multiple times that Rush called Ms Fluke a slut and call them out on it. Today I said on FB that if the Dems are going to force insurance companies, even the catholic church, to hand out RU-486 for "womens health" I want my coffee for free too, as I need that for my quality of life and ability to earn a living. --yeah its no AB level thing, and its a bit lame, but if every silent conservative commits to not be silent for just a few minutes a day maybe we can persuade the folks who are not committed commies to vote the SCOAMT out of office.

Bill doesn't always hyper-analyze his missives (written or video) to try to second-guess how his audience will second-guess him, so this is almost pure, raw reaction to the moment: grief at the loss of a friend, beta version. No focus groups. No QA.

I give Bill points for maintaining as even a strain as he does here, and making the points he does, given the loss his country has just experienced and, combined with that, the loss he, personally, has just experienced, which is visibly apparent.

In the end, what else did he need to say?

Eventually all our suffering and toil can result in a much better world. Also, you do not seem to see the curative power of a baby. We humans are wired by our evolution to be sad when a loved one dies, but then heartened when a new person arrives. It is a very fundamental thing. You seem to be stuck in some sort of obsession with only one side of the equation. Yes, pain is inevitable, but it is not the only thing that is inevitable.

127 I don't think anyone has mentioned the addiction that Twitter and blogs can hold for many of us. It can become seriously unhealthy when every moment of spare time you have is directed towards a screen or the little jump your heart gives when a new message arrives. Sometimes it takes good friends and family who love us to let us know that we've moved from "fighting the good fight" to a potential death spiral. Even soldiers are given R&R to make sure they are the best fighters that they can be. And every athlete knows that over-training is a step backwards in which you are harming your long term goal. I don't see anything wrong with telling someone who is operating at 11 without ceasing that perhaps they need to take a brief respite to recharge and get some additional perspective.

131 >>> For now it is. But science and technology could change all that. We could become effectively immortal. Then the suffering you speak of will become a thing of the past.

>>> We can't get there without having children and encouraging them to make more children.

What you're saying is plausible (up to a point: we're not going to get around the heat death of the universe, so we'd really be kicking the can down the road), but also unlikely.

Since the Cambrian explosion, intelligence and cognitive abilities generally have been increasing exponentially, slowly at first, then much faster with the rise of the hominids, and now with technology including language, printing, the internet, mathematical symbology, increases in computer memory storage and processor speed, and especially even dramatically more rapid increases in software algorithms, we are well on our way to create super-human, non-human artificial intelligences. When we do this -- and it's almost inevitable we will -- we are far more likely to be supplanted and extincted, than to have our brand of apes controlling the self-created conscious-immortality machinery of the universe.

In short, science, technology, freedom (of thought), and capitalism itself -- all the things we've been raised to hold dear because they DO improve the quality of human experience -- will probably extinct our species and our offspring.

139 To me, what make's life worth living is what you do with it. Which is better? Living to be 100 by clean, cautious, healthy living or dying young because you took risks and advantage of each opportunity and moment? I think the answer is for each of us to decide for ourselves. There are benefits to both and, perhaps, even the potential at some balance between the two. Still, it comes down to personal choice. We make our own path as we feel is best for us at the time. If we do otherwise, it will be cause for personal regret.

That is true. However.

I'm thinking that Whittle thinks longevity and health are important and, in particular, he valued Andrew's social company and has empathy for Andrew's children, etc., so he's risking POing some people off so that other people can learn the health lesson and therefore minimize the amount of suffering *for others* due to a preventable heart-attack.

151 I thought some of the personal reminiscences did not put AB in the most favorable light. Maybe this is what Whittle was referring to when he said, "You really had to be there." F.i., on RedEye several panelists said AB would call them up and talk continuously for two hours - to the point where they could put the phone down, make a sandwich, come back, and he would still be talking. I'm sure they meant well, but to me he came across badly in some of those anecdotes.

Venus technique stun gun killed Breitbart?

http://tinyurl.com/7my5epo
Arie M. DeGeus apparently had developed something very similar to this, for a prototype self-powering battery to power electrical vehicles. He was on his way to the Netherlands to receive funding from some very wealthy Netherland investors. While parking his car at the Douglas International airport here in the U.S., he was apparently struck by a Venus-technique shooter— which projects a beam of warped wavefronts. This crazy signal, when it hits the body, causes instant loss of all control of the heartbeat, and the heart in the struck victim goes into wild oscillation, producing a massive heart attack within a few seconds.

DeGeus was found slumped over in his car, having suffered a sudden violent heart attack, and died shortly after being rushed to the treatment room. I do know an associate of DeGeus (whom I totally refuse to name) and he assures me that DeGeus had such technology in rough preliminary but demonstrable form. He also assured me that, if his associates are not all killed, they hope to eventually finish the technology started by DeGeus and get it on the market.

Yes, well put.

At the end of the day, we can't live forever. Simply not possible.

Since, through no fault of our own, we're here, if we're going to live, we might as well make the most of it. And that may include doing things that others don't approve of because they have an instinctive fear of us dying early.

I heard a speech by Brent Bozell a few years back and he pointed out  that when you use objective measures, the MFM is ineffective.  This is why they are losing money hand over fist.  You lose advertising revenue because the companies who buy ad space realize they aren't getting value for their money.  They shifted their ad dollars to places like Google, and the sidebars we see here.

More like someone is unimaginative and has a mediocre IQ.

I hardly hate my parents for following their instincts, the same instincts I have.

But ... it is still factual that life for most people contains enormous amounts of pain and all joys come to an end ... this is such an awful thought, we evolved (quite evolutionarily adaptive) superstitious tendencies to compensate for the harsh realities of life on a planet ... where things are trying to eat us (and where we have to eat living things in order to live).

Some of those biases, well known to psychology, include the optimism bias: where most people think the future will work out better than, in fact, it does. Turns out mildly depressed people are more accurate about predicting the future for themselves and others.

Of course, the grandaddy of evolved biases to help us function in an objectively pointless situation is our instinctive tendency toward religion -- pretty much any religion we're raised with. This gives us a false sense of meaning and of hope, and also the belief us and especially our loved ones will live on after the death we (in nature, at least, before we antiseptisized it like we do in modern culture) saw all around us.

Life is harsh. Has its good bits, and also inevitably ends in death, with usually great amounts of grief and pain in the interim.

173 My take on this is that this helps Whittle, in a way, process his grief.  Who among us who has lost a loved one has gone through a list of "if onlys"?  It's natural, because we don't want to let go, and there's nothing wrong with it at all.

AB chose the life he lived.  While I am saddened that it ended this soon, I'm glad he did choose it for the influence and impact he's had among so many.

Of course we all could spend more time with our family and stop to smell the flowers. Sometimes we need to turn off our blackberries. With that said. Andrew could have done everything right and had a heart attack in the middle of an ER with Doctors standing around and he still could have been taken away from us. Times up, your times up.

Maybe Andrews passing will cause some of us to ask questions and maybe find that answer which will give us a tad more time.

212 I think there are two types of pundits that the Republican Party needs. The first are pundits that help inform the core base. They keep people updated on issues and put pressure on legislators to change their minds when in office when they are headed in the wrong direction. Limbaugh, Hannity, and others do a decent job of this when Democrats are in office, but often drop the ball on Republicans. They are most effective electorally when they focus on issues rather than people (e.g. recent 'slut' nonsense). The second are pundits that reach independent and low-information voters. These pundits seem reasonable and moderate, and often one focus on a single issue or small group of issues. They are not as important to policy but help in maintaining a broad enough electoral coalition to win. You need both, whether you like it or not. The key is to find a balance where policy is driven by high-information base voters without turning off your low-information voters. The people in Group 1 need to remember electoral realities and the people in Group 2 need to remember that their job is framing the issues, not making policy changes to bring in new people.

222 I can't help but feel that there is something inauthentic about Bill Whittle. He does good presentations but there is an air of self-righteousness about it. At the same time, I get the sense of 'I know I sound phony but really, I'm real' and I want to believe him. I guess in part it's his preacher's tone and cadence. So ultimately, meh. He doesn't seem real, but seems to have a boatload of good intentions.

225 Ok, I did this a bit differently.  I read through all the comments first, then I watched the video.  You see, we are the target audience for this video.  So just reading through the commentary without even watching it and judging the reactions of the crowd, well one would have to say the video was a "fail" before even viewing it.

Then I watched it.  To be fair, I don't think Bill meant anything negative by it.  But to be honest, I don't think Bill "got" Andrew, at all.  Read the commentary again, and you'll see what I mean.

What made Andrew special is such a simple thing it's easy to overlook, and it's the whole point Bill missed.  What truly made Andrew special was, he cared. He cared more about us than he did himself.  Asking Andrew to slow down or unplug - sure, it would have been great if he had - but it would be like asking a bird not to fly.  It just wasn't in Andrew's nature.

That's what made Andrew, Andrew.

Ace has been very rational and open about the candidates.  Even if he did have such a statement, I don't think he has anything to apologize for.  Yes, he may have been a meany doo-doo head to your candidate at one point or another but his criticisms are all well-thought out, not off-the-cuff and not distortions.  Granted, I've been on the Ace train all along (Perry, reluctantly Romney).

Along with all the problems Romney brings, I think conservatives really want their Obama moment, a candidate that they are in love with unconditionally.  I think conservatives only had that moment once: 1984.

245 It is a false choice to set up meaning in life as the ability to make uninfluenced, independent choices. 'Free will' is much more complex than people realize, but this is just a part of the human condition. We have biological and social influences that help to create our cognitive processes, but these similarities are what create the ability for shared experiences and even civilization. If you feel negative about the strong arguments against 'free will', ask yourself about the consequences of a world where these physical similarities in our brains and cognitive processes were not similar. That would be another type of terror and isolation far worse that that of deterministic concerns.

Not exactly what I said. You've been corrected on these points many times, and you're intellectually dishonest, buzzion.

Obviously genetics affects everyone's behavior in every respect. It plus environment and random chance (stochasticism) are then only three things that determine behavior.

Black people do have higher crime rates around the world, and far-east Asians have lower crime rates around the world, with Caucasians falling somewhere in between (and in between those other two broad racial groups in about 60 other measurable behaviors). Guess what?

There are genetic differences.

Really.

You can see it with your own eyes, clearly, but also in hormone levels and brain size as measured directly now by MRI. These things matter.

"Oh and slavery exists in the world because of Christianity and the Bible."

I have said many, many times that slavery predates the Bible. Slavery existed *in America* because of the Bible, yeah --- that's where the moral authority for it was drawn from by the actual American practitioners of slavery. In different societies, it was derived from different religious or philosophical or pragmatic considerations.

Your Bible is very brutish, though, and it isn't my fault; it just is.

259 Andrew Breitbart was a true American conservative hero. He was one of my hero's. What he did in his short life immortalized him and he is now permanently woven into the fabric of America. He gave his life meaning. I suspect that being famous and wealthy was never his goal. Being driven to expose the left's hypocrisy to give us the truth became his mission and at this he became the best. It will not matter in time that he only lived to 43, it will be merely an asterisk next to his name. What will matter is the substance of his life and what he accomplished. What he started cannot be stopped. BTW I voted favorably because I like Bill Whittle's work too.

273 Haven't seen the video but I get the gist of it from the comments. Hi, Andrew!

What made Breitbart great was what he did and how he did it. It's who he was. For him to have changed would have been for him to become a different person. Knowing what we know and are fully beginning to understand about Breitbart, that wasn't going to happen.

So, yeah, Whittle's "advice" seems obvious and harmless and, hey, we should all eat our Wheaties and be early to bed and early to rise. Yet we don't... because that's not who "we" are. We do things to satisfy our own needs, ultimately. We're complex that way and a trite suggestion from outsiders is pretty much just noise.

I'll celebrate Breitbart just as he was for exactly who he was. None of us know when we'll meet our maker, so live life to the fullest extent that we think we are able. Breitbart could've been hit by a drunk driver late one night and then what could someone lament? That maybe he should've cut down on the community organizing he did at night? "We all just know what was going to save someone if they had just listened to me!" Pretty arrogant in that not even God (if you're of the spiritual type) announces His plans.

Breitbart is dead! Long live Breitbart! And if you want to live with all wicks of the candle burning, then great. None of us knows our limits, but at least be willing to test them at some point because it drives one to greatness. It may or may not drive us to death, but we'll never be able to know when that limit is.

As far as a vote goes, I like "Splunge!" I'm not interested in tearing into another ally because his reaction was different than mine. I want him on my team in the Army of Andrews.

What nonsense, Jimbo.

"No one has the slightest physical evidence to support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people. There occurs no contemporary Roman record that shows Pontius Pilate executing a man named Jesus. Devastating to historians, there occurs not a single contemporary writing that mentions Jesus. All documents about Jesus came well after the life of the alleged Jesus from either: unknown authors, people who had never met an earthly Jesus, or from fraudulent, mythical or allegorical writings. Although one can argue that many of these writings come from fraud or interpolations, I will use the information and dates to show that even if these sources did not come from interpolations, they could still not serve as reliable evidence for a historical Jesus, simply because all sources about Jesus derive from hearsay accounts."

You can't keep the truth from kids all that easily. I'm sure they'll know their dad was hard working and pushed it too hard to be good for his health. A friend of their dads saying they wished he hadn't done that is probably not going to be extra-traumatizing for them.

Just a guess though.

300 Random, I read through your "treatise" about genetics and cultural factors and their place in the "decision" making process.

I read through it twice, just to make sure I hadn't missed anything, then I sat back and had a good giggle.  What you have there is a collection of pseudo-intellectual horseshit with only one real underlying theme, that your not personally responsible for anything you do.

It's a bunch of crap, really - none of it will withstand any manner of scrutiny or scientific analysis.  I get it, it's so much easier to blame "society" or "culture" or "your environment" than it is to take a good hard look at yourself and own up to your own mistakes.

But I suggest you take a good hard look at  yourself.  And in the meantime start reading biographies of some of the most successful, most influential people and you'll discover something interesting.  A lot of them started from very humble beginnings - something which of course flies in the face of all of the horseshit you posted visa vie genetics, environment, etc.

The truth is Random, you decided who you are - so if you don't like who you are, you've got only two real choices.  You can either decide to change, and put forth the work necessary to do that, or you can decide to blame everyone else for your problems.

I think it's pretty obvious which road you've taken here, and while the pseudo-scientific crap you've invented so that you can pretend it's not your fault is somewhat amusing, it just doesn't hold water.   Good news is, it's not too late.  You can always realize the road your on leads no where, and change course.

Bad news is, you have to want it, and you'll have to work at it, and nobody can hand it too you.

301 I gave it a Favorable. The key to watching this is that he says it is 1 day after Breitbart died. This is Bill Whittle angry. That is the natural reaction to hearing a 43 year old has died of a treatable condition. I was very angry the first day after. Brietbart held a unique position and had a unique ability. He should have seen how much more effective that would have been over the long haul rather than waste it on every idiot who manages to plunk out a tweet on his Iphone.

What you're saying is psychologically true (to a point: the ideas we buy into, including self-efficacy vs. not believing in free will, make a huge difference in outcomes: we are meme-engines and not merely genetic machines) and not irrelevant to me personally.

But.

There is no physical-based model of the brain and reality itself which would show it is anything other than our materialistic brains making these decisions. Yes, if my brain were to do as you say, then it would change the outcome of my life.

And some brains will do as you suggest.

But ... it is where it is now as a result of its physiology and all the ideas it has processed and entertained to date. What *I*, my consciousness, wanted, isn't particularly relevant, since *I* am merely a projection of these physiological processes.

But to the degree that *I* is meaningful, I'm not sure I want that anymore. Passing away, to use the euphemism, is closer to what I want and more achievable.

Also, for every great man/woman as you suggest I read about, there were tons who tried but didn't make it. It's the nature of hierarchies, whether it be leadership of a country or Amway, or health status, or anything ... that SOMEONE has to be at the top. And generally, they don't start out there.

So this creates the belief that people can rise to the top (true) ... but the odds of that are always small, as distributed throughout the population of people who wish it.

Put another way ... thanks for the well-meaning advice. Someone somewhere will do that. I will probably not. (Even if I want to.)

315 Blah blah blah.

This stuff is not an appropriate way for a public figure (i.e. Bill Whittle) to speak his first words about the death of a giant like Andrew Breitbart.

I have had experience with all this stuff in my own life. It is very important stuff, so I don't want to discredit Bill Whittle's message. It's just inappropriate timing.

And what the fuck does he know about what killed Andrew Breitbart, and who the fuck is he to say how Andrew ought to have lived his life.

The life he lived was a hard one. But, here's what Andrew was;

He was the political equivalent of an extreme sports athlete. And, he was the champion of the world at his particular extreme sport.

Bill Whittle is an essayist.

What he knows of Andrew Breitbart's life he knows from observation, not experience.

Make a story dependent on Faith and it will attract those who naturally like such things. They will pass that on to their offspring and the story will spread and endure. It won't be 100% effective, but it doesn't have to be. The real question is not what you believe, but why you believe it. 325 I'll agree with Whittle on the effect of twitter on Breitbart. I speak as a veteran of TWO heart attacks. Here's what I learned at heart school (which I was forced to attend). Stress raises your blood pressure. Higher blood pressure stretches your arteries Stretched arteries get tiny little fissures - which quickly heal. While they are healing, globs of cholesterol can land in those tiny fissures. Other globs stick to the first globs, forming plaque. Eventually, a big glob might form, narrowing the artery. The glob might even break off, drifting down the artery until it comes to narrow place - blocking the artery. If that happens to be coronary artery... part of the heart served by that artery stops getting oxygenated blood and dies. You just had a heart attack! Since Breitbart ALREADY had had a heart attack, he was in a HIGH RISK category - just like me. I survived my 2nd heart attack* - he didn't. *btw, my 2nd attack came after a year of the highest stress I had been under in my entire life. I've made an effort to avoid stressful situations since then.

327 I like Whittle. I liked Breitbart. I like this video. Until we know the full story about his health there's no way to know how reckless he was being. The impression I have right now, based on severely limited info, is that he had serious heart problems and didn't take even fairly basic care to limit possible damage. The reports are that Breitbart wasn't even under a doctor's care. Which is insane, if true. Which is why I don't really believe that. I didn't find Whittle's piece disrespectful at all.

Posted by: Clubber Lang at March 04, 2012 09:15 AM (ZPrif)

328 One thing I will say adding to what Clubber Lang just said, is Andrew was a tough player. I don't think he would have been bothered by Whittle's video and would have realized where Whittle was coming from, that he simply had wished the best for him and wanted to help others.

Posted by: Random at March 04, 2012 09:16 AM (YiE0S)

329 The only thing I would add to this:

Stress raises your blood pressure.
Higher blood pressure stretches your arteries
Stretched arteries get tiny little fissures - which quickly heal.
While they are healing, globs of cholesterol can land in those tiny fissures.
Other globs stick to the first globs, forming plaque.
Eventually, a big glob might form, narrowing the artery.
The glob might even break off, drifting down the artery until it comes to narrow place - blocking the artery.

... is that high-insulin levels leads to inflammation which leads to more arteriosclerosis. There may be more medical benefit, and less negative side effects, from focussing on controlling blood sugars and reducing serum insulin than going gangbusters in trying to lower total cholesterol with statins.

Also if you read the biographies, as I suggest, you'll discover something very, very interesting.  The difference between the successful people, and the one's who aren't, have absolutely nothing to do with environment, genetics, or any of the other half-baked horseshit you've mired yourself in.

Those that were successful tried, failed, tried again, failed, and kept trying until they succeeded.  Those who were not successful tried, failed, and gave up.  You can throw as much pseudo-intellectual bullshit at that as you like, but the truth of it simply doesn't change.

INDIANAPOLIS (CBS/AP) — A hospital spokeswoman says a 2-year-old girl found alive in an Indiana field after violent storms is the sole survivor of her immediate family.

Cis Gruebbel is a spokeswoman for Kosair ChildrenÂ’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky. She said Saturday that the girlÂ’s mother, father, 2-month-old sister and 3-year-old brother all died Friday when the storms devastated southern Indiana.

Gruebbel says the toddler is in critical condition.

She would not identify the child and says she could not provide details on the childÂ’s ordeal. She says extended family members are at the hospital with the child.

Melissa Richardson, a spokeswoman for the hospital in Salem, Ind. where the child was first taken, said the childÂ’s family is from New Pekin, Ind., and she was found near her home.

Officials at the hospital where the girl was first taken said Saturday that authorities were still trying to figure out how she ended up in the field alone. Richardson says the childÂ’s family is from New Pekin, Ind., about 10 miles south of where the child was found.

334 For the most part, I liked what Andrew Breitbart was about. Then again, when he threw in with the extremist pro gay rights advocates, he lost pretty much all his credibility with me. This nation will not survive if Marriage is relegated to a pathetic worthless non institutional state, and that is the goal of the gay rights advocates. Once gay marriage becomes an accepted way of life, it will not just be the gays using it to absolute full abuse levels. First, because gays are not likely to have children, and because each is equally capable of working and earning a living, the easy divorce we have now will become even easier. In fact it may drive the entire divorce aspect down to such a non thing that laws will be eased to make the transition from married to single a same day function.  Any two people of the same sex or even opposite sex can enter into the marriage knowing full well exiting the marriage has no consequences. It will be abused for insurance purposes, immigration scams, tax purposes and likely millions of scams that I just cannot think of, because that is the biggest problem with all these advocate items, there are always unintended or even intended but hidden consequences to their advocated change. Andrew Breitbart bought into the whole gay rights thing, either because he himself was a faggot or he really was not all the great at thinking as many give him credit for.

Yeah, he did a good job attacking the media, taking on ACORN, but at the end of the day, he bought hook line and sinker the whole gay rights agenda.

True.

I find the last of the two of them quite unlikely considering what we know scientifically about how "we", our personality, are tied in to specific regions of the brain, and further that we develop in the first place as our brains develop. I am unable to think about a sensible mechanism where we would have life after death given our knowledge of physics and biology.

You are correct that I can't prove this is so. Also, I do think Jesus or someone in that role existed, but wasn't initially as well-known in the Roman empire, and became more influential through mythology and story telling.

Random, there is something in your rambling, pseudo-intellectual bullshit that makes me think that at some point, perhaps in the future, you might actually be capable of rational thought, rather than simply regurgitating the nonsense someone has filled your head with.  If and when that day ever comes, I'll be here.

Until then, it would do you well to consider that at the moment, you are little more than a monkey at the zoo, throwing poo at passing tourists.  Sure, you think you have it all figured out and that the tourists are mindless drones, etc..

But the sad and simple truth is your nothing more than a poo-throwing monkey, and for the most part it's not even your own poo your throwing, it's someone elses.  You show up here at this blog for the sole intent and purpose of throwing poo, and that this activity somehow validates you as a person.

So if and when your ever capable of putting down the poo and holding a conversation, I'm game.  Until then - nahh.. not really.  I've seen plenty of monkeys throw plenty of poo.  I simply have no interest in it anymore.

It's about His SPIRIT.........alive in my SOUL...........which grants me the ability to KNOW Him. For every true believer of Christ, this MUST take place in each and every one of them..........PERSONALLY.

344 I want the SCOAMF out of office.   But I also want my 11 yo girl and 3 yo knucklehead boy (but I repeat myself) to have a father around to see them graduate college, get married, have their first kids, etc...

Perspective and balance are always difficult - Breitbart made a significant impact, but who's to say whether he might have had a much bigger one if he'd dialed it back occasionally and went more for the long-term.

I don't know the answer.

We're all biological robots. Me too.

And no, I don't think I'm particularly important in the normal meaning of the term, in the social realm. I do think I have a better grasp of reality than most.

Exactly. I simply don't know overall if he'd have been happier dialing it back and living a bit longer, or if he'd have accomplished more or less.

So, since I admire a lot of his ideas, from respect of gays to wanting balance in media coverage, and his intensity of living ... I'm not going to second guess him.

Yeah, probably more exercise, less blue light at night (should have installed f.lux on all his devices, including jailbroken iPad), and more saturated fat/less carbohydrate would probably have been good for him, but ... he made his own decisions and good on him.

347 From my own experience Whittle's advice seems sound in general. To what extent it could have been applied to AB I couldn't really say. Pushing yourself to the edge of exhaustion and bad health can not only shorten your life span but it also has a tendency to diminish the quality of what you do in the years that you have. It really isn't all that radical to suggest that for those that push themselves to the limit every day a bit of rest and personal replenishment isn't therapeutic. We'll generally live longer (barring SMOD) and produce more and better results. Yet AB knew what he was doing. He was a man that engaged in the great questions of our time. Perhaps he felt he had to go full speed ahead because there wasn't enough time left to finish the race otherwise. That the problems facing this nation and its citizens needed to be tackled head on at Mach 10 because otherwise the rest of us at our slower speed would never catch up to them. Maybe he was right.

348 Give Bill Whittle a break. He was mourning his friend and, instead of providing the same information and perspective we were getting from everyone who knew him, Whittle offered a different take. I appreciated it. #breitbartishere

349 I understand Whittle to be pissed and missing his friend and sad that he couldn't "save" Andrew from the likes of himself.  Nothing more or less needs to be read into this video. And yes, let's give AB a country to die for, as that was his mission.

351 Dave in Fla: "Atheism is a religion just like all the others. If you truly didn't believe, you wouldn't try so hard to proselytize. You would simply not care."

To the former, I agree. Sort of. To the latter, I don't. I think it's that natural state of humanity to understand our surroundings in order to survive. It's an existential pursuit. What is The Truth? Pretty basic quest of the developed mind, and attaining different conclusions - even pronouncing them - isn't a sign of indifference. Obviously.

But the onus of proof from a scientific POV lies in the Believers, those asserting in the affirmative that there is something. In this case it's The Afterlife. Prove the positive. Only with Faith, one cannot. One could "prove" the human component in terms a human could understand based on human experience and history (i.e. a man walked the Earth and inspired people), but to prove a Spirit is impossible and doctrine dictates that it cannot be proved because, well, it's Faith.

But I'm carrying this waaay off track. I just wanted to partially agree with you with a distinction and a sidetrack.

352 I liked the video.  Bill Whittle loves Andrew as a person, not as the Media-Slayer that we love and thought we knew.

What I liked most about Andrew was he had BALLS.  I would love to see OFucktard be 20 mins late for a news conference and have someone with Andrew's guts walk up to the podium and demand an apology.

Ever since he did that to Wiener, no gasbag will dare to be late to a news conference again.

Too bad the POTUS has the SS to keep that from happening to him.

354 Liked it. Really. I think Whittle is right. I am a pastor with a congregation and ministers are notorious for not *taking care of themselves* in terms of adequate rest, time with family, exercise, healthy eating, and so on. No, not asking Andrew not to be Andrew, that's rubbish. Just asking Andrew to take care of himself! If not for us, if not for America, then dagnamit for his wife and family. The single most common issue I raise in all my preaching and teaching is the importance of sabbath keeping. I don't think anything can change our family, communal, perhaps national life more than 24 - okay how about just 12 - hours of not doing *anything* except relaxing and playing and putting away the gadgets. And yes the media is our enemy. "Enemy" is a harsh word and I don't like to use it - but it might be appropriate for what we are dealing with.

355 I like Bill Whittle.  Love his white board videos. But it kinda sorta sounds like he's angry with Andrew for having the temerity to up and die on him.  Now this is a totally natural emotion to have but I think that it should have been kept to himself.  The advice he gives on keeping some perspective while working and learning how to decompress every once in a while is good advice.  But had Andrew taken that advice maybe Andrew would not have been Andrew.  It's tough when someone dies. It's tougher when that someone was a friend and fellow warrior in a good and worthy cause.  There is a sense of loss.  There is fear that we won't be able to carry on as well without.  There are all the seven stages of grief.   But in those seven stages are also acceptance and hope.  Bill is human and a good man.  He'll get through all the stages, just like we all will, in his own time.  Let's cut him some slack.

Andrew talked a lot about the "new media"....and how it was the way that we can beat the 'institutional left's media monopoly'.

I think AB felt that he had a responsibility to stay engaged in the ongoing fight, the moment-to-moment battles, that are happening every day in this 'new media'....on Twitter, etc. .....He had encouraged us all to get engaged, so think he felt he should fight long and hard, into the wee hours of the night, because of this.

For this reason, I think his health was a secondary concern for him. ...Fighters do this. ....It's a selflessness that overtakes them. ....I will not scold Breitbart for this. I salute him for his selflessness, in the heat of battle. ....Because he was always in the battle.

Whittle seemed a little too eager to get in front of a camera and tell his little story about how "I told Andrew he should take care of his health". ....It comes across as self-serving....and creepy.

360 Great post by Zombie (via the Gateway Pundit link -- http://bit.ly/zZs76V -- by ExExZonie in 82) http://bit.ly/xjCELd He wasnÂ’t a great writer. Not bad; just serviceable. He didnÂ’t have a PhD. He personally wasnÂ’t very handy with a camera. (Though he certainly knew what to do with newsworthy photos or footage once he got his hands on them.) He wasnÂ’t an economic theorist. He wasnÂ’t a beacon of moral purity. He wasnÂ’t a deep philosopher. He wasnÂ’t even a professional journalist. But whatever he did, he did with gusto. And not just run-of-the-mill gusto: extreme gusto. When he got the ball, he never fumbled. He sent would-be tacklers flying. And even if his team wasnÂ’t on offense, heÂ’d snatch the ball anyway and score a backfield touchdown before the other guys even knew what happened. One thing we must learn from AndrewÂ’s life: If Breitbart could do it, anyone could do it. We no longer have any excuse. AmericaÂ’s bloggers and citizen-journalists and new-media mavens need to get off our collective asses and make news happen. Every day, you need to ask yourself: What Would Breitbart Do? And then do it.

Everyone grieves in his own way. If Whittle didn't want to tell his own anecdotes, I respect that, but sharing stories is how a lot of us deal with loss. You speak very easily of death. I'll bet you've never had a near-fatal illness, or had any sort of brush with death. I'll bet you've never had someone close to you die before their time.

The only thing that really matters is that Breitbart's young children are now fatherless, and his wife is a widow. It's not "judgmental" to say that it shouldn't have happened. After Breitbart had his first heart attack, he gained weight, became even more aggressive, worked longer hours, and--according to his father-in-law--stopped going to doctors. From the eulogies it sounds as though he drank more and slept less, too. His friend Michael Walsh--another cardiac patient--said Breitbart had untreated hypertension because he was a "stubborn, hard-headed Irishman," and he felt real men don't care about their health.

Well, not only did Breitbart pay the piper, so did his kids and wife. Stating facts is not being judgmental. This shouldn't have happened, and Breitbart didn't "burn out." He dropped dead on the sidewalk at age 43, only four years out of his thirties. The second biggest tragedy is the terrible waste. Imagine what he could've done with 40 more years.

That's a slap in the face not only to his kids and his wife, but also to all those who lionized him and were inspired by his work. His wife and kids could have had many more years of him in their lives, if he had simply just taken better care of himself. And we could have had many more years of Breitbart leading the charge against the media and the Left, if he had simply just taken better care of himself.

372 I don't get the criticism.

In fact I think it is petty, at arm's length, and embarrassingly cheap.

Until seeing this video, I didn't know that Bill W. was a close friend to AB, but I'm not surprised since they are both outspoken Tea Party conservatives, both from L.A., and both involved in new media.

This has been a sad week for all of us, and I speak as someone who knew AB only from his book, his on-line persona, and his appearances on television.  People across the political spectrum concede he was a joyful prankster and a generally delightful person to know.

I can only imagine what it was like to lose him as a friend.   Bill W. is absolutely right.  People need to take care of their health and put that first.  I don't for a minute believe that had AB been less addicted to these electronic skirmishes, which he was the first to confess to, that he would have done himself and his family a huge favor.

All this is, of course, in hindsight.  But Bill is absolutely correct in pointing it out.  Anyone with kids and a family would know this.

373 "There are all the seven stages of grief." How many times do people have to bring this up? The Kubler-Ross model is 5 stages and it's wrong. It was never based on much in the way of scientific research. For an evidence-based model of how humans respond to loss, see the work of, for example, George Bonanno.

374 Yeah, this is personal for me. I got the call at age 38 and spent 21 fun filled days in the hospital. 50:50 that I would live. I listened and got a chance to see my daughter take her first steps, my son get his masters and next year, God willing,  my daughter graduate with a BSN degree. To do this, I had to acknowledge that I wasn't immortal. There have been weeks when all I did was sleep, get up, move to a couch and sleep some more. This allowed me to go at full speed the rest of the time. Even those of us who didn't know AB have lost a great advocate and a virtual friend.  A week here and there, decompressing, might have made a difference, in concert with some medical oversight. So +1 to Whittle for saying a difficult truth.

375 >>> "I understand the sentiment, but I wake up every morning pissed off that I didn't die during the night. So if I burn out doing something I'm happy doing, then it's a bonus." You are not the only person to feel this way. In fact, I intend to attempt to overcome my innate, irrational survival impulses and help the process along.  Judging from the number of "play in the freeway" type comments I get, I assume reactions to this will be mixed.  >>> "You speak very easily of death. I'll bet you've never had a near-fatal illness, or had any sort of brush with death. I'll bet you've never had someone close to you die before their time." You sir, are an arrogant fool. I have. I have also come to the conclusion I would be better off having never been born, on balance. Further, that this applies to a great number of people. I was reading of one study where 30% of children felt this way about their lives. That was from 1932. Satisfaction with life is hardly universal.  WHAT'S MORE, it is very well known in psychology that humans have an "optimism bias": most people believe their lives will be better than they in fact turn out to be. The people that are the most *accurate* about predicting the future, for themselves or others, turn out to be those diagnosed as mildly depressed.  Life is depressing. You and I and everyone we know and love are going to die, if you haven't noticed, and probably in pain and fear. In the meantime, we live with frail bodies and psychologies of various levels of resilience on a planet where ... things are trying to eat us.  But hey, we eat other living things too daily so we can survive and shit out the other end.  >>> "The only thing that really matters is that Breitbart's young children are now fatherless, and his wife is a widow. Saying which facts are important, which outcomes should have happened instead, and which actions would have resulted in these new, desirable outcomes is though.  You are not the 'ultimate interpreter of the way things ought to be and what people should want'. Make all the judgments you want! That's what the human brain does. But you seem to be too unimaginative to realize that other people can and do the same thing, yet reach different conclusions, and a lot of this stuff (like whether life is good or not) is subjective anyhow.

Posted by: Random at March 04, 2012 03:40 PM (YiE0S)

376 Life is depressing.

Speak for yourself. To you life may be depressing, but for some of us life isn't only about eating and shitting and wishing we were dead. I thought about stuff like that when I was 15, but I've moved beyond it.

You've taken it upon yourself to decide "the only thing that really matters" as if there aren't dozens of different ways to look at this.

Tell that to the Breitbart family.

You are not the 'ultimate interpreter of the way things ought to be and what people should want'.

Since I never said I was, I have no idea what you're talking about. Breitbart made decisions that cost him his life. That's a fact. His decisions also cost his children their father and his wife her husband. Fact.

And to me, that's the real tragedy. There's nothing romantic about how he died. I'd rather have him alive, with his family, and less visible and outspoken than a martyr to the cause. And as a person with a history of major health issues, I can also say it's a fact that his death was unnecessary. That doesn't mean I'm "judging" Breitbart, but even if I were, so what? Who am I? Nobody. My opinion is worth as much as yours or anybody else's.

I hate waste, and I hate unnecessary tragedy, that's all. Breitbart will miss out on so much, and so will his family and the country.

What do you suppose his answer would've been if you'd asked him 24 hours before his death, "Hey, Andrew: How would you like to drop dead on the sidewalk tomorrow night, all alone?"

The fact is, life is precious. We can go at any time. I have no patience with people like you who melodramatically claim to be angry that they're alive. Not when there are so many people whose lives are taken from them long before their time and who would gladly accept the hours of life that you think are such a burden.

You should have more respect for your gift. And yes, I'm judging you.

377 Update from a news report I cited in one of my comments above: LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An Indiana toddler found in a field after violent tornadoes died Sunday after being taken off life support, ending a hopeful tale for survivors in the Midwest and South picking through the storms' devastation. Fifteen-month-old Angel Babcock of New Pekin, Ind., was found after her family's mobile home was destroyed in Friday's storms. Her father, mother and two siblings were killed. When Angel arrived at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville Friday night, she was opening her eyes—a hopeful sign, chief nursing officer Cis Gruebbel said. Things turned on Saturday, when the swelling in her brain didn't decrease, he said. As the day went on, her eyes ceased to move and she continued to deteriorate. There was no sign of brain activity. Medical staff told the family there wasn't anything more they could do. With extended family gathered to say goodbye, the family made the decision to end life support on Sunday. "Angel has been reunited with her parents," her grandfather, Jack Brough, said in a statement. "We want to thank God for all of you and for your thoughts and prayers. God will bring you and all of us out of this. This is what it will take. All should look to God." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you, God? Yeah, I'm sure that being sucked up in a tornado at 15 months in order to be dashed on the ground 10 miles away after the rest of he family had their limbs ripped off and parts of their house fall on them/hit them in the face was great. I took umbrage at your facile, assholish, imbecilic treatment of Dan's opinion about the value of his life. Not only do you assume that because he wishes to die, Dan has probably never been close to death or been particularly sick himself, you then reach staggering heights of clueless ignorance about humanity, and go on to blaisely speculate that only a person who has *NOT* lost someone close to them would wish to die.

I approve... Posted by: Romeo13 at March 04, 2012 11:43 AM Very well said.

My, Llarry, you've got random's panties in a knot because you correctly called random's boring, pseudo-intellectual nihilism what it is - laughable high school crap that most people grow out of by the time they're out of their teens.

My guess is that random is (chronologically, if not mentally) well past his teens and still thinks  his "it's all pointless and I'm a brave truth-teller" schtik is intellectually dazzling stuff instead of drivel.  He showed up here thinking he'd impress people with his fourth-rate insights and  instead they laugh at him.

386 Bill is right, of course. Just like you can't do any good unless you get elected, you can't do any good if you are dead. Posted by: navybrat at March 04, 2012 12:01 PM Bingo. Not sure what is so difficult to understand about this concept.

I only read a dozen or so posts, and I see how this conversation is going down.

Men die in war all of the time.  But this wasn't being gunned down in the prime of your life.  One of the points Bill made ("PUT THAT THING DOWN") is very valid.  It doesn't seem to me that people understand the difference between "immediate" and "important" anymore.

If you're a high-profile figure, you can't retweet every freaking thing that comes your way.  From what I hear, Andrew allowed himself to be tweeted to death.  OK, I know it wasn't just the tweeting, but anyone who allows his life to be sucked into the void by social media is already only half alive.

The real deal is out here, folks - not on your iphone.

Andrew also had 4 children.  How did he prioritize his time with them?

To summarize:  when you're being Breitbart, be fearless, but remember to go home and turn the damned phone off.

388 ExiledonMainStreet, you are also a jackass.

The best possible response to, "I wake up every morning pissed off that I didn't die during the night," is clearly, " I'll bet you've never had a near-fatal illness, or had any sort of brush with death. I'll bet you've never had someone close to you die before their time."

You're both fucking shitheads.

389 I could have every appreciation for pointless life in all its guises, and death is still going to happen to me and everyone else. So that appreciation is for nothing and is in fact a bitter curse.

For you, maybe, but I'm not surprised that you're incapable of perceiving the evidence all around you that death is just a beginning and not an end. You strike me as an extremely superficial, callow, angry person.

Doesn't matter. You're on the same train as the rest of us, so you'll be okay. There's no need to be such a silly drama queen.

Dan's not being serious. He doesn't wish to die. Those who wish to die do so. And I don't know what "blaisely" means.

Next time --- asshole --- try, "Sorry to hear that you feel that way. What happened?"

Not interested. The way he expressed himself--claiming that every morning he was pissed he was still alive--isn't worthy of a "Gee, what's wrong, big fella?" As I said before, I no longer have any patience with such a juvenile worldview, especially when it comes up in a thread about someone who died before his time. It shows no respect for life, so it isn't worthy of my sympathy.

And it's kind of funny to hear a raving lunatic such as yourself lecturing others how to be better people.

390 >>> "You speak very easily of death. I'll bet you've never had a near-fatal illness, or had any sort of brush with death. I'll bet you've never had someone close to you die before their time."

You sir, are an arrogant fool. I have. I have also come to the conclusion I would be better off having never been born, on balance. Further, that this applies to a great number of people.

By the way, what near-fatal illness or brush with death have you had, or which person close to you died before his or her time?

Posted by: Llarry at March 04, 2012 07:37 PM (Rnfm0)

391 Fearless. That doesn't mean go into battle without the weapons and ability to do so. Gird your loins was as much about saving your life as protecting the future. I stand for my principles against all comers, I have made sure I understand what battle I am fighting and that I am mentally, physically and emotionally ready to enter that battle. Only in movies does the hero lead the charge and not die in the first volley from the enemy. Fearless. It is our responsibility to face the future and the consequences of our choices not to hide behind the ramparts. Saddle up.

Random:  Let's see, you made it through the Cliff Notes on Existentialism and you believe you're profound.  My, you would have impressed them at the Cafe Flore back in 1952 (well, maybe not.  Sartre was a leftist POS but he expressed that  "there is no God and life is pointless" cr*pola  much better than you're able to.)  60 years later, well, nobody is impressed.

"I have also come to the

The obvious, snarky thing to say is :Judging by your stupid posts, Random, I'm inclined to agree.

The charitable thing to say is: Really, get help.  You're one very sick puppy who confuses his own gray, sad, and  twisted perspective with wisdom.

394 I am, essentially, an existential nihilist because reason leads me to this conclusion. It has been noted that "everything is permitted" was meant as a curse at that shocking realization, not as an expression of gratitude that the world is so.

Dan, however, may well be a practicing Catholic for all I know. Perhaps he isn't in the slightest a nihilist, but is in great pain.

And the best the person you're defending could come up with is that he probably has never lost anyone close to him?

What an ass.

396 I am, essentially, an existential nihilist because reason leads me to this conclusion.

That's not hilariously pompous and self-aggrandizing at all.

And the best the person you're defending could come up with is that he probably has never lost anyone close to him?

What's this gibberish supposed to mean? Is it more "existential nihilism"?

Christ, I just can't help laughing every time I type that! The funniest thing is that your conclusions on the supposed pointlessness of life are all based on emotions, not reason. This, for example, is right out of a banal TV script or novel for "young adults":

You and I and everyone we know and love are going to die, if you haven't noticed, and probably in pain and fear. In the meantime, we live with frail bodies and psychologies of various levels of resilience on a planet where ... things are trying to eat us.

You may as well be one of the hayseeds on the old show Hee Haw, singing their best bit:

Gloom, despair, and agony on me (ohh!)
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery (ohh!)
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all (ohhhhhhhh!)
Gloom, despair, and agony on me.

The difference between you and them is that they were satirizing, while you're dead (oops) serious.

397 As I said above, you are stupid, Llarry. Emotions isn't the reason why. Emotions can be enjoyable and I've never claimed otherwise. Not for the first time here, you're simply reaching into your unimaginative preconceptions and projecting.

But forget about me (comment about forgetting about me now as the unimaginative twit you are).

You talked to a guy who, for all you know, doesn't kill himself because he believes in God or thinks there is a purpose to life, who is in so much pain he wakes up wishing he had died ... and your first thoughts are to tell him he's probably never been greatly sick or lost anyone close to him.

Other than being a mean, nasty bastard, how would you know these things?

398 As I said above, you are stupid, Llarry. Emotions isn't the reason why. Emotions can be enjoyable and I've never claimed otherwise.

And I never said you did. You claimed, with much thundering histrionics, that you arrived at your position of "existential nihilism" (giggle) through reason, but everything you've mentioned about the gloom, despair, and agony of life is based on emotion. Who said anything about you not enjoying emotions? You obviously enjoy superficial depression, self-pity, and rage.

You talked to a guy who, for all you know, doesn't kill himself because he believes in God or thinks there is a purpose to life, who is in so much pain he wakes up wishing he had died ... and your first thoughts are to tell him he's probably never been greatly sick or lost anyone close to him.

Add a reading disability to your many other failings. He didn't say he wished he'd died; he said he's "pissed he's still alive." Pure adolescent melodrama.

We had a genuine suicide scare here a couple weeks back, and I pitched in to talk the guy out of it by pointing out with as much harsh clarity as I could what killing himself would do to his young daughter. In the end he chose to get help, which was a brave thing for him to do.

This other throwaway comment about being pissed that he's still alive is an insult to those of us who've suffered terrible losses or have nearly died. So I said what I said.

By the way, you haven't answered my question: Have you nearly died or experienced the loss of someone close to you who died before his or her time? I was almost murdered once; I've endured life-threatening cardiac and brain illnesses; I have an incurable auto-immune disorder; and my closest friend committed suicide in 2001. I was also raped as a child by multiple adults, endured years of utterly merciless bullying at school, and survived 20 years of alcoholism and drug abuse.

What about you, Mr. Existential Nihilist? What have you suffered that makes you claim that you're doing what you can to lessen your survival instinct and hasten your demise? Put your fucking cards on the table.

400 People keep asserting on this thread that Breitbart wasn't doing anything about his health.

A local Los Angeles radio host who was a friend of Bretibart's said on air that he'd seen Breitbart at a gathering just a couple weeks before and he never looked better. He kept going on about the change being real night and day. He also pointed out that while Breitbart like to drink, he wasn't an "alchy" and it never struck him (Philips) that Breitbart had any problems with alcohol or any other substance.

I didn't care for the Whittle vid either- he comes across as a sanctimonious ass.

Excellent. Nobody in the history of this blog has written a more vacuous comment. You are the all-time champion. I salute you.

And you're right; your existence is indeed a nightmare, a self-generated void without meaning.

But that doesn't matter. When your body craps out, you'll experience what the rest of us will experience, and when everyone is done laughing at you they'll embrace you with the same loving acceptance with which they embrace almost everyone else, except for the Hitlers and Bundys and the Saddams and the rest of the evil turds who refuse to admit to their crimes and express remorse.

And you'll look back on your absurd days as a trivial poseur in this life and you'll laugh, too. Hopefully we'll be able to meet briefly on the other side, just so I can tweak you for your childishness and bellicosity, and then we'll go our separate ways.

402 I met Bill Whittle last year in LA and liked him. He was friendly, and in some ways reminds me a little of a lot of the geeks I know (like my husband). A little overwhelmed when attention is paid to them, a little uncomfortable, but sometimes you have to stand up and say something. I thought he was a nice guy.

Andrew was unique in our sphere; that's why close to a week later his death is still on our lips. To me he was more important than Rush or Hannity because he was a raw feed. Andrew always came across as being bright, very bright; astute with a quick mind and well spoken. Hannity's just not as smart (sorry) as I always HOPE he'll be and misses opportunities with guests and interviewers. Rush has been in the game so long he sometimes seems like he's playing the game; Andrew for all his years in it seemed fresh and new and indefatigable.

I feel I understand what Bill was saying in the video; I agree with people who say he's coming to terms with is grief. I think he was incredibly fond of Andrew, and went out on a limb and said something to him, and is trying to come to terms with the personal loss of someone who seemed like he was larger than life in every sense of the word.

For me, I want to know what happened when someone I know dies. It sounds macabre perhaps, but it gives me a feeling of understanding, helps to try and make sense to the tragedy. Sometimes it's just 'natural causes' other times it's cancer or what have you, but when you have a profound loss, (for me any way), and the person seems so full of life, so remarkable, many want to make sense of it in any way they can.

I understand what people say about Andrew being set at 11, I don't know his family, but they must be in anguish, and people I admire (Ace, Iowahawk, Bill, Jtlol, Greg, etc), are grieving, so I think Andrew in RL really was a special guy. As someone who has often felt lonely in their fight against the left and who therefore admired Andrew's energy and ability, I feel a great sense of loss too. We had so much left to learn from him, I think; we were all sort of coalescing and organising about these ideas of attacking the MSM, holding their feet to the fire and how to be effective at it and frankly, Andrew was the best at it. We have perhaps one of the most important election in our nation's history coming up, and I can't believe we don't have Andrew's voice to help lead the charge.

So I give Bill's video about Andrew a thumbs up; because he is trying to make sense of such a gaping loss, because it shows Andrew's frailty and humanity and how many people he touched, and because if we want to change the direction of this country, we have to be around to see the fight through and Bill's reminding us of that.
