"Binded" by the Whites
— Jack M.

or, How Obama's Calliope Crashed to the Ground.

Ignoring all the ridiculous talk of "binders full of women" and "Big Bird", one can find a lot of interesting news out today on who is voting and how they are choosing to do so.

And what does it indicate? That both white voters and GOP voters are revved up like a deuce and voting for Romney because, mama, that's where the fun is.

Manfred Mann Earth Band* references aside (for now), I just want to share a few things I've seen today that herald a coming Romney/Ryan Tsunami. First, check out this passage that somehow got past the gatekeepers at the Washington Post today:

But even if Romney sustains a huge loss on the Latino vote, he could very well offset that (and much more) by out-performing his Republican predecessors when it comes to white voters, which are still about seven times as much of the electorate as Latinos. Indeed, itÂ’s not unreasonable to think that Romney could win 60 percent or more of white voters this year.

The most recent national polls from four pollsters — Gallup, Monmouth University, Fox News and the Pew Research Center — all show Romney winning the white vote by more than 20 points. That’s something no GOP presidential candidate has done since Reagan’s landslide 1984 reelection win.

(Emphasis added).

Now we can bicker on the Latino vote. I've seen numbers all over the place, including some that show Obama underperforming his 2008 percentages significantly.

But this is the first time I've seen a published compilation of numbers that indicate a Reaganesque sweep of white voters by Romney. It really is looking a lot like 1980/1984 out there.

Why is this important? Because I think this helps explain the findings of the recent Gallup Polls as well, especially with regard to the Gender Gap favoring Romney. Democratic strategists were quick to dismiss Gallup's finding of a 6 point lead (edit: make that 7 point lead now!) for Romney by claiming that there was no way Romney and Obama were running even among women, as the Gallup survey showed in its internals.

Except, there is a way that could happen. And that's if Romney is significantly outperforming his metrics elsewhere. And, as the Washington Post was kind enough to tell us today, he appears to be doing so.

At this point, I almost hate to remind the Washington Post that Reagan won 49 states in 1984 (save Walter Mondale's Minnesota). Perhaps that explains why Jill Biden is on her way to Duluth right now. Oh, who am I kidding? I love to remind the Washington Post that Reagan won 49 states in 1984.

But, wait, there's more! Check out this nugget of caramel goodness I saw at NRO today:

Charles, a Campaign Spot reader in Tennessee, took a look at the totals after the first day of early voting in his state:

All Obama Counties in Tennessee

2008: 36,144

2012: 25,317

Change: -30%

All McCain Counties in Tennessee (except Henry which has not reported 2012EV totals):

2008: 71,846

2012: 94,588

Change: +31.7%

Sure, it's red state Tennessee. Who cares? Well, I can't take more without taking the whole thing, but the same trend is playing out in North Carolina too. You should really click the link to check out the signs of GOP voter enthusiasm and Democrat despair that are playing out in the early numbers.

Who knew that when some silicone sister with a manager mister said she'd "turn you on sonny to something strong" she was referring to the 2012 Romney/Ryan ticket?

We do now. Consider this your feel good 70's Mystery Click of the Day:

And yes, I preemptively denounce myself for this post. Just to be, you know, safe.

*Yes, I know Springsteen wrote and recorded this song originally. But, like almost all things Springsteen, it sucks. Manfred Mann's Earth Band is THE definitive version.)

I can be found on Twitter as @jackmcoldcuts if you are so inclined.

The mid-term election of 2010...was a lot like the landslide of 1984.

People just quietly went out and voted. In both those elections.

The polls were off, in both of those elections, too.

It's ridiculous for any of these pollsters to be using any 'models' from 2008...after what happened in 2010.

Romney eviscerated Toonces on immigration. Pointed out he promised reform and did nothing. Should have noted that cynical last-minute quasi-DREAM Act end-run, too, but perhaps he was starting to feel bad about the ass-kicking he was putting on the incumbent.

He's out there, of course, shilling for the President, and giving me cause to wonder - What if for, every undecided voter that says, "well, if The Boss is voting Obama, I guess I will too", there are 1.2 undecided voters saying "Final straw. This is a campaign that simply is not serious. Big Bird, Springsteen, BINDERS?!?!?".

I think, among those remaining middlers, the "these people are not acting like serious adults with a serious plan, and we cannot afford this nonsense any more" phenom will drive Romney's numbers up, up, and away to the White House. And the Democrats are oh-so-helpfully pouring gas (as long as they can afford it) onto that flame, because, well, I guess it is all they have and all they know how to do.

90 Let's all remember that although a win for Romney is better than for Obama, we still don't know and won't know if he can get the job done.

He may be qualified and his heart may be in the right place but can he reverse the last 4 years? Many regulation have been written and are now a fact of life. Can the President roll those back? Does he have the will and the votes in Congress to roll them back?

It's questionable that the ACA will be repealed. It will all depend on the feckless Boehner and the clueless McConnell. Not two pillars I would put much weight on. (though McConnell's shown some signs of realizing the scope of the problem)

Will all the nonsense about AGW be tossed on the garbage heap?

Will Romney rescind Obama's last 4 years of EO's?

He's getting my vote but I don't think it's going to be "the good time" for quite a while.

One big plus is in SCOTUS. You know at least one of them has been holding on until after the election. (my guess would be Ginsburg).

The election is just the START of the recovery.

92 I have a confession to make: even though I was in my teens in the 1980s, prime "MTV Generation" age, I always LOATHED Bruce Springsteen. His "blue collar poet" act always seemed like a huge put-on, his voice sounded like someone trying to talk while vomiting, and his lyrics always managed to irritate me. There. 102 Sorry gang I like Springsteen's music. There is a live in dublin dvd that's great [especially if you're working on an analysis of old commie songs] that includes a pretty good version of Blinded. And after all of the righteous songs about profiteers and poverty at a concert, I always turn to my son-in-law and say it was a wonderful concert and how happy I am that we didn't have to buy tickets and that Bruce as a Man of the People is willing to travel the world and give free concerts. This is right before I expect him to tell me I owe him $85 a head for the tickets. Then I ask where I can get the free tour t-shirts everybody is wearing. LOL.

108 I've been saying this from the beginning. The path to victory is for Repubs to increase their share of the white vote. This shouldn't be that hard since the ruling class Progressive trash that currently run the Democrat Party *hate* white people and aren't very shy about sharing their contempt and loathing for white people. The Repubs dominate the South even there roughly 1/3rd of the population is black who vote 95% Democrat. How do Repubs win in the South -- by getting a massive % of the white vote. Dems think they can win in the future by shitting on white people constantly -- and still getting 45% of the white vote. There's 20% of white people who also hate white people. They will always vote Dem. But the bulk in the middle kinda like white people. Most of their family and friends are white people. And the constant insults to white people grates on their nerves.

139 As far as Romney and Latinos

If I had to guess, I'd say the Dem's weakest demographic was among Latino voters.  They tend to be highly religious, hard working, and really line up with Conservatives on just about every issue.

There are two problems, however: whatever we mean when we talk about border enforcement, too many of them hear "We don't server their kind here."  The second is related: any time we talk about immigration, we talk about the border with Mexico.

Yes, it's completely logical.  Yes, talking about a "fence" on the northern border is kind of silly, since most illegal immigration comes across the southern border.  That doesn't matter.

Now, I hope that the Democrats overplayed their hand the last 4 years, and (further) undermined Latino trust with Fast and Furious.  If they have, then we can overcome our two problems without changing anything- or, at least, not doing anything beyond being very careful about word choice while not betraying our principles.

If they haven't, we may have to "back burner" the rhetoric on those issues until we can convince them we're "safe" to vote for.

143 Noticing who votes for you is good, but it's less than half the battle in the long run.

The Republican Party needs to actually govern in a way that helps Whites, by doing what it can to stop and roll back mass immigration and by taking the affirmative action boot off the necks of working class Whites.

If Whites are only of interest to the Republican Party when they are actually voting for it, and the day after and the day after it's back to more affirmative action and a George W. Bush / John McCain-like enthusiasm for "comprehensive immigration reform" the Republican Party is doomed.

Because (a) that would be discouraging for Whites, and the Republican Party needs White voters enthused, and (b) current policies are reducing White numbers absolutely and as a share of the population, and driving Whites out of (minor but numerous) influential positions in favor of minority hires who have strong reasons to support leftist policies.

If you don't challenge policies that are destroying your demographic base, if you allow the population and the electorate to be made more hostile to you (by a point or two) every electoral cycle (which is what the Republican Party has been allowing) eventually you must reach an end of the road, where conservative ideas simply cannot find a numerous enough audience any longer.

There is definitely something to this.  It explains almost everything that Team Obama is doing - they are hemorrhaging white voters and they know it.  Bill Clinton, Bruce Springsteen, going on The View and Daily Show and Letterman, hammering the Big Bird thing - all designed to appeal to white voters, especially white Baby Boom voters.  Obama did well with that group in 2008 but they're abandoning him this year.

And yeah, as somebody mentioned up the thread, a LOT of those folks live in the Philly suburbs.  I expect any day now an announcement of a Springsteen appearance in Philly.

175 Springsteen wrote "Because the Night" specifically for Patti Smith.

He also wrote "Hungry Heart" for the Ramones (at the request of Joey), but was talked out of it by his producer, and kept it instead.  Shame.

176 <<*Yes, I know Springsteen wrote and recorded this song originally. But, like almost all things Springsteen, it sucks.>>

THANK YOU!

I was beginning to think I was the only person on the planet who can't stand Bruce. "Born to Run" is his only halfway decent song.

You're not alone.  He may be a decent songwriter -- he penned "Fire," which was a cool hit for the Pointer Sisters -- but I've never cared for that croaky voice of his.  A male Janis Joplin (who'd have been forgotten by 1975 if she hadn't died young).

179 Voter fraud and trickery will prevent any landslide, they will simply not allow another Carter/Reagan debacle to take place. But the margin will be too big for them to contest or salvage a win out of.

180 Is "Binders full of women" the same as "Ho's in all area codes?"

181 And aside from a few bombs like Nebraska, Springsteen was great up until Tunnel of Love, his last good disc. Probably his best, too.
Strangely enough, Manfred Mann's cover of "For You" was far better than Springsteen's original. Greetings from Asbury Park is probably the most overrated album of all time, but his stuff after that was generally great... then he went downhill.
Like BinderBabeUSA said, I can enjoy the work of lefties even if they're idiots... if its good enough. That means I won't watch Tim Robbins, but I will Alec Baldwin.

183 Just recalled the scene in The Player where in a studio executive's office, his kid is going through a binder, a binder!, of actress's headshots, trying to figure out who to date. "yes, no,no, no,yes." That's Hollywood for you, Obama's Hollywood.

185 @ *Yes, I know Springsteen wrote and recorded this song originally. But, like almost all things Springsteen, it sucks. Manfred Mann's Earth Band is THE definitive version.)

Wow I couldn't agree more. Preach it, brother!

Also, yeah, it's Tennessee ... but still, we do have our Obama voters, particularly in the more populated counties. Not as if it'll be anywhere close, of course ... :-) ...
