Birth of a Meme (As Predicted By Drew)
— andy

Yesterday Drew did a post on a BuzzFeed piece by Andrew Kaczynski that alleged Mitt Romney was a hypocrite on the White House's national security leaks because of his prior defense of Scooter Libby. Sure, this seems like a minor point in the grand scheme of things, but Drew made the following observation:

Why is this even remotely important? Buzzfeed's political posts can be launching pads of MSM story-lines. Once a false version of something gets going, it's impossible to unring a bell.

Shocking no one while proving Drew right, both DNC Daily Newsletter Politico and the NYT's execrable Maureen Dowd picked up the story overnight. David Axelrod tweeted a link to Dowd's column this morning.

A question I have is, where did this story originate? As Drew pointed out, Kaczynski was informed of a fundamental error in his piece by several people on Twitter. And he interacted with them, so it's not like he was unaware of the criticism.

One thing I'm reminded of here is the Daily Caller's takedown of Media Matters from a few months back.

“Ben Smith [formerly of Politico, now at BuzzFeed.com] will take stories and write what you want him to write,” explained the former employee, whose account was confirmed by other sources. Staffers at Media Matters “knew they could dump stuff to Ben Smith, they knew they could dump it at Plum Line [Greg Sargent’s Washington Post blog], so that’s where they sent it.”

I wonder if Kaczynski was so insistent on sticking with the original storyline because he didn't have a say in the matter? My interactions with him on Twitter have generally been pretty good, but he blocked Slublog after Slu was so rude as to tweet the following observation/question to him:

@BuzzFeedAndrew Conjecture is not reporting. Do you have proof the Romney camp leaked to Drudge, or are you just pulling it from thin air? (@Slublog)

Yeah, that's some block-worthy stuff right there.

If Kaczynski and the BuzzFeeders can speculate on whether the Romney campaign floated the Condi Rice for VP rumor to Drudge, I think it's more than fair for us to speculate that the Scooter Libby story may have been planted by the Obama campaign or Media Matters (BIRM). I don't have any evidence, but that doesn't appear to be the standard, does it?

This is really a shame, because Kaczynski appeared to be a pretty fair-minded guy for a while, especially compared to his hack of a boss Ben Smith and the rest of the left-leaning media generally.

But like the old adage goes, when you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas. My unsolicited advice to Kaczynski would be to get the hell out of there while he still has a shred of dignity left, but it may be too late.

3 The thing to remember about the Libby case is that he was charged with perjury because he did NOT leak something and told a grand jury he did.  Get that?  He was charged because he said he thought he told a journalist about Plame's identity when it turned out he did not tell the journalist.  It was Richard Armitage who was the leaker, not Libby.

Libby went to jail for NOT doing something and apparently being mistaken about it.

30 She lies again, naturally. (TRNS) — During a hearing Wednesday with the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) asked Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano if DHS had discovered any links between a high-ranking official in the State Department and the Muslim Brotherhood. The question was a nod to a letter authored by Rep. Michele Bachmann and signed by five House Republicans that was sent to the State Department. The Representatives questioned whether Secretary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin or any other government officials have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Secretary Napolitano answered Jackson Lee with a resounding no. To further emphasize her point, Jackson Lee asked her question a second time. “We have looked into this,” Napolitano said. “The FBI has looked into this. We have found … no credible evidence that such activity is going on.”

What is "this" and "such activity"?

The accusation is that Huma's family has close ties to MB.  This is a fact, there is no denying it.  She's also not on the outs with her family.

Now, if they want to make an assertion that somehow this does not effect the decisions made at the White House, they might be right.  The administration is sympathetic to the MB without any additional influence.

Democrats are stupid.  They should just shut up.  This whole thing was just an opportunity to jump on Bachmann and undermine her. She may be crazy, weird or impolitic, but she isn't wrong on this one.

67 To a liberal, no other philosophy is valid. Any person who claims to hold another philosophy does so for duplicitous reasons, which means they're lying about their motivations, which means a disconnect between words and action, which means hypocrisy. The left *wakes up* with this assumption about everyone else, so every specific allegation is just a clumsily-assembled excuse to make the allegation they *know* in their hearts is true. We joke about it being a mental illness, but we laugh kind of nervously because it really looks true.

68 Verrryyy interestinggggg. Politics ‘Auschwitz-Like Conditions’: U.S. General Accused of Massive Afghan Cover-Up to Protect Obama During Election Year Posted on July 25, 2012 at 3:45pm by Erica Ritz Print » Email » Comments (12) General Caldwell reportedly didn't want to draw attention to the hospital "with elections coming." (Photo: CNN) (The Blaze/AP) — US military officers accused one of the highest-ranking US commanders in Afghanistan, Lieutenant General William Caldwell, of trying to cover up a horrifying scandal at a taxpayer-funded hospital in Kabul to limit bad news in an election year, the AFP reports. Colonel Mark Fassl, who testified Tuesday, said he was shocked when Lt. Gen. William Caldwell cited the then-upcoming 2010 congressional elections as the reason not to investigate the hospital. The general reportedly said at the time: “How could we … make this request with elections coming? He calls me Bill.” Col. Fassl said he believed the “he” in that statement was a reference to President Obama. Two retired colonels who worked with the training command also told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that Caldwell did not want an investigation of the Dawood National Military Hospital, and one described the building as having “Auschwitz-like conditions.” U.S. taxpayers spent more than $150 million on the hospital in just 18 months, according to CNN.

O/T.... but... in the last two days I've heard the Inspector General who oversaw TARP, and now the Ex CEO of CitiGroup, both call for the breaking up of the big banks...

TARP and regulation was used to consolidate the banking industry into larger and larger banks... using the economic crises as the excuse... now some are seeing the problem as the Big banks have too much money to gamble on too many things.... and WAY too much power in Washington.

It's like they're deliberately setting things up so no sane person will ever cooperate with them, I can only assume the endgame is MORE POWER to coerce because now no one is cooperating with them.

“Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against - then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now, that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with.”

PopTarts FTW, because they are already pre-packaged for on-the-go  eating, and a pass through the toaster before consumption is optional.

Toaster Streudel take time and effort.  You *have* to heat them.  And if you get the heating wrong, you will either burn the outermost layer of streudel, or leave the jelly cold.  And then you have to apply your own frosting.  And half the time, those little packets don't tear right when you try to separate them, so you wind up with one all split  down the side, so instead of the delicate drizzle shown on the box, you wind up with a big schmear, like a PopTart would be  anyway.  Even if you do separate it  correctly,  by that point your hands already have a mix of condensation and crumbs on them, so tearing the plastic packet becomes near-impossible, so then you have to find a pair of scissors.

If I wanted to put that much effort into eating breakfast, I would have already made a bowl of oatmeal.

216 speaking of hypocrisy...there's a lot to get over, including the foolishness of youth. It seems that politics motivate people to act stupidly, regardless of age, regardless of best intentions, regardless of which side of a political aisle.

"Greece expels Olympic athlete over racist tweets"
Triple jumper Voula Papachristou was expelled from Greece's Olympic team Wednesday for her nationalist/racist unfunny tweets. "She definitely cannot represent Greece in London," stated by the Greek Democratic Left being the only acceptable political party representing the only acceptable Greek views which happen to oppose Papachristou's politics. Too bad that you're the best athlete with a clean physical report but for your wrong thought.  No apology acceptable. You're out.

This week also saw the sacking of a Russian baritone, disinvited from his starring role in this summer's production of the Wagner Ring Trilogy at Bayreuth Festival because of his inappropriate though private old tattoo from his youthful rock scene. As things go, his chest bears the politically incorrect mark he believed spiritually to mean "all is well". He harbors no malice for the PC decision. What's the point, it's Bayreuth Festival's call. As if this Russian baritone couldn't have done positive press for the Festival speaking his maturing views on behalf of humanity.

As the politically correct agenda goes, it is yet acceptable for the Islamist seeking the infidels' death to participate in the Olympics. At which point of a terrorist attack, a nationalist's defensive response for home team or homeland is not tolerable.

There is no excuse for racism, just as there is no excuse for thought police.

Recall that the Olympics were where the world's best performers competed without regard to a participant's race or nationality, religion, creed or political affiliation. Politics and individual thought aren't deemed appropriate grounds on which to be judged at the Olympics so long as yours are correct. No apologies accepted, a colossal institutional error in judgment. This kid Voula could learn the tolerance or empathy as a foreigner herself by going to the Olympics and meeting the very people she'd never known personally, finding them to be good people. But no. The Democratic Left Party has spoken. She is unforgivable. Her apologies are unacceptable.

Stupid is as stupid does, with far too much going around all sides. Overcompensation "RESET" the overcharge penalty.

As a parent, I have had many fond childhood memories ruined by trying the old childhood favorites I grew up on.  Apple Jacks are biracial now.  Lucky Charms have all sorts of shaped marshmallows I do not remember fitting into the commercial jingle.  Cocoa Krispies don't turn the bowl of milk nearly as chocolately-brown as I remember them doing before.  Even Froot Loops seem...different.

But Cookie Crisp.  Exactly as I remember it.  Awesome.  Soaks up just the right amount of milk.  Perfection in every spoonful.

It's the pinnacle of bien pensant liberalism. It's the way you express your enlightenment.

But for gays, it's a trap.

(1) They think marriage is "optional". If people ever take it seriously, gays are going to quickly find that marriage is anything but optional and those who support it in theory but have no interest in it until maybe they're in their 60s will be in for a rude awakening.

(2) Suddenly the state has an interest in gay relationships. "Common law marriage" has fallen by the wayside, but there are still remnants of it and even if law doesn't, the culture will demand that gays fit into a monogamous pairing and that no other situation is tolerable.

(3) The main social problem with marriage is that heterosexuals, who can produce children unexpectedly, are either not doing it or are waiting too long. This has a profound impact on how society operates and adding to the perception that marriage is something you do when you're old and gray (look at the pics of the same-sex couples getting licenses) will just make the situation worse.

(4) Plural marriage.  Ask your favorite same-sex marriage advocate what they think about plural marriage.  9 times out of 10 they'll say that they have no problem with it.  (Seriously, try it.) Well, they should.  If you use a "rights" argument, then plural marriage follows closely behind. While the social effects of same-sex marriage are small and limited, that is not so for plural marriage.

Frankly, I think the religious thing is a red herring (although religion sometimes gives us wisdom we can't articulate) because marriage has been the same thing across cultures and time.
