Bob Costas Attempts Walkback, Displays Ignorance
— andy

How does one man pack so much stupid into such a short little body?

“For a long time, I’ve been wanting to get off my chest my disgust with this idea that every time something tragic happens, no matter what it may be, that in any way touches sports, there’s a chorus of people saying, ‘you know, this really puts it in perspective.’ Which is a bunch of nonsense, because if that was true, we wouldn’t have to have that perspective adjusted every time the next tragedy occurs. It’s a bunch of nonsense,” Costas said.

Well that part I agree with. But did Costas want to go on to discuss domestic violence, or substance abuse, or violence in the culture? It sure doesn't seem so, since he leaped straight to the left's go-to kneejerk excuse that blames violence on an inanimate object.

Cut to the chase:

“Here’s where I stand: I do not want to see the Second Amendment repealed. … People should be allowed to own guns for their own protection. Obviously, those who are hunters. … Access to guns is too easy in some cases. I don’t see any reason a citizen should be able to arm himself in some states in ways only police or military should — to have a virtual militia [by] mail order or gun shows. Why do you need a semi-automatic weapon? What possible use is there? … Whitlock wrote about a gun culture. That’s what I was focusing on.”

The ignorance on display there is staggering and concentrated, but let's try to unpack a little of it.

First, he seems to believe that there's a thriving mail order industry for modern firearms where, I guess, Amazon ships AR-15s and AK-47s to your house without a background check. In reality, when a modern firearm is purchased from an out-of-state dealer by an individual, it goes through a dealer-to-dealer transfer process if the sale isn't over-the-counter, and it is subject to all applicable federal laws as well as all state laws applicable to the transferee. This is part of the Gun Control Act of 1968, fer chrissakes.

Generally, a firearm may not lawfully be sold by a licensed dealer to a non-licensee who resides in a State other than the State in which the sellerÂ’s licensed premises is located. However, the sale may be made if the firearm is shipped to a licensed dealer whose business is in the purchaserÂ’s State of residence and the purchaser takes delivery of the firearm from the dealer in his or her State of residence. In addition, a licensee may sell a rifle or shotgun to a person who is not a resident of the State where the licenseeÂ’s business premises is located in an over-the-counter transaction, provided the transaction complies with State law in the State where the licensee is located and in the State where the purchaser resides.

[18 U.S.C. 922(b)(3)]

And gun shows? This again?!

A gun dealer doesn't have some magical power to evade applicable laws if he sells at a gun show. And non-dealers at gun shows are just that ... non-dealers. They're conducting private sales, no different than if they ran an ad in the classifieds. Additionally, in Massachusetts where I live, a private sale is subject to virtually every rule that a sale from a dealer is anyway.

Finally, he brings up the semi-auto bogeyman, which, again, is just ignorant. A Colt 1911 .45 is a fine semi-auto. It's also been around for over 100 years, hence the name.

It isn't like this type of action on a repeater is inherently more dangerous than a revolver, pump, or lever action. It's just that the left has been taught that semi-autos are something new and bad and inherently more powerful and dangerous than non semi-autos, so they have to drop the buzzword.

Costas says he wants new gun laws, but he doesn't know a damned thing about the ones that are already on the books. And he knows even less about guns themselves. Color me shocked.

In MS there really isn't any that I know of. I bought (and subsequently lost in the great boat tipping incident of 2010) a rifle from a classified ad. We exchanged DL info just to be on the safe side, but I don't know of any rules we had to follow.

I can't speak for the other 56 states but there the CA all firearms transfers require going through an FFL.  The only ones not requiring a 10 day waiting period for the state are family generational transfers, and that is only good for a maximum two generations (i.e. Grandparent to grandchild).

69 This important insight occurred to me in the early 1990s. Liberals think they fear the gun, not in the healthy way we practice "it's loaded" and muzzle discipline, but because they are sociopaths. Many of them are actually so deranged that if they were to have a gun, they would go postal. They don't have an afterlife in their religion ("it's just tissue, dude"), and they're medication makes them unsteady on top of an original lack of mental firmness. They don't actually fear the gun: they fear what they know they would do with it. And that would get them kicked out of their little club.

There are few advantages to the tacticool pistol grip on a pump shotgun in lieu of a complete shoulder stock. Shooting one of those pistol-gripped numbers with any kind of reasonable accuracy is exceedingly difficult--at least for me and I'm an experienced shooter. 85 I like the 1911, except when I have to compress the main spring after cleaning. That is a real bugger. More than once the thing flies out of my hands and goes off who knows where.

I know, I know.

FWIW, both were "well used" by '64.

I gotta say that this has never happened to me. I don't think I have ever even heard of that happening. Maybe you should spend more time with the Gunner's Mates.

10 days?!?  But I'm mad now!  -- Homer Simpson

The FBI background check I had to get when I got my CHL allows me to bypass that crap.  I'm not sure about this but I think the rest of Texas' CHL holders still haven't shot as many people as NFL players have.

94 Why the hell are M1911's so damn expensive? I'd like to get one but they're outrageous, at least the ones I'm eyeballing.

95 He works for NBC. For years he worked on an NFL broadcast that welcomed Keith Olbermann, who railed against Republicans on a sports show. What did anyone expect, less left-wing sanctimony?

96 Maybe some well informed sports figure will give The Young and Hansom Bobby Costas (as the late Jack Carney of KMOX used to call him) a "gun law for dummies" session. And maybe he would also take him to the range for some hands on connection with reality.

Well yeah, that's why I have them. Got any other brilliant observations?

99 These twerps who advocate more gun laws and more restrictions really piss me off when they don't even have the brains to do a little research before they open their pie hole. The next intelligent thing costas says will be the first intelligent thing he says.

105 “the football culture, the gun culture, domestic violence.”

That's not all the same thing, but I do remember the days when footballers were decent, at least in public. And we were not afraid to go to a game. Our entire culture has coarsened, thanks to PC liberals like Costas, so why is anyone surprised at the rise of violence to go along with general amoral behavior branded as cool?

Posted by: PJ at December 04, 2012 04:02 PM (ZWaLo)

106 Oh how could I have not been a part of this thread?  Thank you Andy for continuing to stomp on Costas. I just must comment on this little gem of  stoopid...

First the turd states..., "Â… People should be allowed to own guns for their own protection. Obviously, those who are hunters. Â…"  Followed by the moronic, "I donÂ’t see any reason a citizen should be able to arm himself in some states in ways only police or military should... Why do you need a semi-automatic weapon? What possible use is there?"

Semi-automatic?  Does he even know what that means?  Why, he asks.  Well, some bird hunters might protest giving up their semi-automatic shotguns.  Some housewives might protest giving up their semi-automatic shotguns or just about any other non-revolver handgun for home protection; he does say he is for protection after all.  But then the boson sized brain doesn't think they should have the same as the police.  Sorry but in a free society, the citizen should be able to own EXACTLY what the police have and I'm pretty sure some police officers carry semi-automatics for "protection".

Keep'em coming Andy.

107 The worst part isn't that Costas is stupid, it is that he is predictably stupid in ways that anyone center- to right-leaning has had to put up with for, well, at least as long as I've been alive.

109 Gunshows here have a line of cops at the entrance who check everyone. The guns are chained to the tables and high priced compared to shops. All prices are high now thanks to comrade choom and the glorious collective utopia building. As for mail order only an FFL licensed dealer can accept any part with a serial number. This myth from lefty rat liberals about free guns at the gun show and a bazooka and shells coming in the mail are as stale and played out as the race card. Just read a story out of Florida about a part time gun dealer selling guns at a flea market getting shot when some youths he refused to sell to came back with guns of their own. The teens smashed the display case, stole some guns and shot the man in the stomach.

110 The issue about gun shows is not the shows, but the "trunk sales" of regulated firearms (pistols) that happen in the parking lots or just off site.   It's difficult to find individual sellers of regulated firearms in your area through normal communication channels.  We like to trade our guns so we can experience different types and find those "dream guns" (like my H&K P30S!!!) so what's a guy to do?  You take your guns to the gun show in the trunk of your car, put a sign on your back that says "Private Seller/Buyer" and walk around trolling for contact.  In most states it's the new buyer's responsibility to transfer the weapon, not the individual seller.  By the way, another way that our local, state, and federal governments are trying to undermine the 2nd Amendment is to require you to have a "collector's license" if you own more than X number of guns, and also they're prohibiting gun range patrons from using ammo that's not bought at the range.  This is to keep you from having ammunition in the car while there are guns in the car.  WTF, over?!!

...by the way, Bob, I "need" a semi-automatic because I want to be able to lay down as many rounds as possible when a drug-craving ex-NFL player kicks in my door looking for cough syrup to cook.  Get it, moron?

Posted by: Manolo at December 05, 2012 03:39 AM (kl3xJ)

112 Journalists routinely swap the semi-auto and the automatic term back in force like they are one in the same. They just aren't familiar enough with guns to understand the technical distinction. In the 2nd presidential debate there was the one lady that asked Obama about laws to control the number of "automatic rifles" on the street. And Obama replied "that we really do need to do something about the guns that kill so many people." The funny thing is that lots more people die every year from being beaten to death by bare fists than they do by automatic rifles. And there are already a slew of laws to restrict the possession of fully automatic machine guns. And that class 3 license isn't that easy to get. Anybody who is out there comitting crimes with fully automatic rifles is most likely possessing that gun illegally and thus has already broken the law and more laws aren't going to change anything. But this again is a perfect example of how people on the left rule with their emotions rather than their heads. Sure a whole beavy of new gun laws isn't going to decrease crime but the fact that we did something, anything, washing them of the guilt they feel for the "gun culture" and brings them closer to saintly hood. Secularism has become the new religion.

113 Costas is definetly scared about what the public thinks about him, why would he be on several shows including O'reilly to further explain his position. The ironic part is that his position is based on ignorance. He talks about nfl players having guns in large numbers but never researches how many of those players hunt or are sport shooters. Does the moron know that millions of hunters use semi-automatic shotguns. His not only a midget in stature, he is a mental midget.

Posted by: fred at December 06, 2012 06:07 AM (HYFCt)

114 The semi-automatic argument is just ridiculous. Apparently, Costas thinks that we should be just fine protecting ourselves with muzzle-loaders.
