Bobby Fischer vs. Yefim Geller, 1961
— rdbrewer

Updated: I've added what came to be known as "the game of the century."

This is exciting, smash-mouth chess. If you know the game.

He's using the "Spanish Opening" or the "Ruy Lopez." Geller is defending with the "modern Steinitz variation." I recommend stopping the video after each move and trying to guess what the players will do. Fun stuff.

Added: One more. Here is "the Bobby Fischer trap." I think it's a "Ruy Lopez" opening against the "Sicilian defense 'accelerated dragon' version" (without iocane powder).

Okay, one more. And this is the last one more.

Thanks to commenter "rickl supports SMOD/Supervolcano 2012," this is Bobby Fischer vs. Donald Byrne in 1956 in what became known as "the game of the century." Fischer was 13.

ItÂ’s the end of the day at the State High School chess tournament and a bunch of the geeks have gathered in the hotel lobby which, by the way, features an attractive open fire pit. As more Coca Colas and Mountain Dews are consumed the group gets louder and begins recounting their past exploits- Czeckmates in three moves, opponents  reduced to crying like little girls, and so on.

Charlton Heston has been quietly reading National Review in a corner of the lobby. After putting up with this for thirty minutes, he gets to his feet, pulls out his Ruger and starts shooting. He later tells the police, “I hate chess nuts boasting round an open fire.”

125 I really loved that movie about Fischer, sort of documentary-like.  I can't remember the name of it.  Bobby Fischer Against the World, or something.

Fischer was brilliant at chess.  In a class of his own.  It's a shame that he was such a paranoid, but that might have been part of his chess brilliance.

I never really cared about what he said or did.  He didn't carry any weight and had no influence in anything.  He was clearly insane, so it appeared all harmless blubbering.  It would have been nice to get more chess out of him, but maybe that's just all he had in him?

162 Fischer probably did more than anyone to popularize chess in America. His triumph in the 1972 World Championship was a major battle in the Cold War. Seriously. Nobody today who isn't a chess fan has any idea how thoroughly the Soviets dominated the chess world during the 50s and 60s. Fischer's victory was almost like the U.S. hockey win in the 1980 Olympics. Sadly, it was pretty much downhill for him after that.

So do I, model _1066, but think for a minute of how f'ed up that is.  Once upon a time, the wait staff knocked themselves out to be nice and generous to the customers because they hoped for a good tip.  Now, you go to a restaurant and kowtow to the wait staff because if you don't, they might put spit or boogers in your food - food you're already paying top dollar for.

In other words, you and I have become restaurant dminnis.

The Gordon Ramsey Recipe for Success(ful TV Show):

1) Screen list of failing restaurants that suck.
2) Order some food; tell everyone it, and they, suck... while cursing. Spit out some food just to emphasize disgust.
3) Try to break everyone down by telling them how much they suck in as many ways as possible. Use curse words and smack hands.
4) Clean the kitchen while cursing prolifically.
5) Curse even more colorfully. Smack hands some more.
6) Introduce simple, fresh, local fare to menu. Tell everyone how much the new plan doesn't suck. Smack hands.
7) Purchase some goodwill by bribing the staff/owner with new tablecloths and a coat of paint.
Reopen the restaurant with overwhelming clientele, but curse positively. Smack hands, but in a good way.
9) Tell everyone they're starting to suck again because they're so goddamned slow or are taking a piss. Walk outside, talk to the camera, and smack hands.
10) Summarize that the crew finally got its shit together and made profit for the first time in over a year despite the suckitude.
11) Threaten to come back.

190 197 Fischer's mother was Jewish, which made him Jewish as well. But she was also a Communist sympathizer, so he was essentially a red diaper baby. That's bound to lead to problems. I defy anybody to emerge sane from that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Fischer

Heh. I think it more likely that whatever incentive Fischer had for keeping his inner demons in check evaporated after he became World Champion, since in his mind he had nothing left to prove. So he let them out and they just sort of took over and ran his life for the rest of his life.

Posted by: OregonMuse at March 24, 2012 07:54 PM (xm1A1)

200 He loved chess. to him, the 64 squares WAS his life. KGB did extensive lab work on political prisoners for many years prior to the 1972 match and it was a MAJOR blow to the Soviet system when Fischer won the match. He had to be neutralized at all cost. The probability of Bobby Fischer, (U.S.A.) being world chess champion for the next 20 years was too much to take.

204 Oddly enough, Geller is one of the few players with a plus score against Fischer for his career.

The second game isn't a "Ruy Lopez opening" - which is the Spanish Game to most of the world - it's a Sicilian.  The two are mutually exclusive since they involve different first moves for Black.

Fischer never played the French Defense in a serious game, but he did have a lot of trouble with it, particularly the Winawer Variation ( 1 e4 e6  2 d4 d5  3 Nc3 Bb4) because of its messy complications.  For all his renown as an attacker, Fischer liked above all positions with clear strategical goals.  Most of his attacks weren't the result of some wild aggressive play, but rather of having outplayed the opponent and achieved the best squares for his own pieces.
