Boehner's Press Conference

He just left his meeting with Turbo Tim Geitner. He seems to be throwing cold water on the talks and saying the White House isn't taking this seriously.

Boehner called on the White House and Democrats to publically name what cuts they would accept. Boehner called the current deal "way out of balance." He didn't mention what was in it.

"Revenue is only on the table if there are serious spending cuts that are part of this agreement.

President Obama is reportedly scheduled to be vacationing in Hawaii on January 2, the date billions in spending cuts – and untold consequences for the economy – will kick in if a deal is not reached on the “fiscal cliff.”


According to the Hawaii Reporter, residents who live in the area of Oahu where Obama and his family vacation have been told that the usual restrictions on their movements during an Obama stay will be in place for 21 days, from December 17 through January 6....

I'm reading that the deal right now is tax increases now, and cuts 10-20 years later.  1.2 trillion in tax increases over the next ten years against 400  billion in cuts that start in 10 years, which means they will never happen.

I don't see why anyone with millions of dollars buys a million dollar home with anything but cash -- except for the huge right-off of mortgage interest and real estate taxes. So I don't have a particular concern with there being a cap on the deduct-ability of interest. They actually can still afford a home. Not so the middle class. If the Republicans sell out for too low a number though, I'm through with them.

That reality is that the Dems control the presidency and Senate, and the schizophrenic voting public wants a "balanced" approach.  But only if there's no chance it will affect them or the spending programs they like.

That's who elected officials in the GOP have to answer to.  Meanwhile, their base can't decide what they want them to do.  Anything done today can be undone in two years if the GOP loses the House.

The idealistic, naive view that if only the GOP leadership would fight fight FIGHT, they'd be able to somehow get massive spending cuts, tax cuts, and ponies for all?  Not reality.

That doesn't mean they need to completely roll over and cave, but the No Compromise Take No Prisoners crowd needs to face the fact that negotiations do, in reality, entail negotiation.

Now Rush is repeating what he said in October 2008, they might go after 401(k) plans, either stop letting people deduct taxes to contributions or taking away our 401(k)s over and I will go ballistic! I don't care about tax deduction, but not government is taking my $!!! Rush said its on cover of Time and it was in an IBD editorial last night. Do you want me to insert tiny url?

This is not a new idea. There was an article about this right after preaze got immaculated the first time. Some female honcho in his admin thought it would be a great idea to nationalize our 401ks.

This is the real problem, not his "negotiating with the President". Before he even *sees* the President he's talked himself down from about where the Horde would be happy to well below anything that will make a difference. And *then* he starts getting talked down further by the Dems.

267 All of the world's advanced economies are swirling around the same black hole of default (formal or informal like devaluing their currency).  Currently, Japan is probably in the lead with a yen crisis soon following as it appears that they can no longer self finance their deficit, the Euro project has staved off Grexit once again but the undertow from the internal austerity on the Mediterranean members keeps pulling the few strong economies downward.  The idiotic policies of the new French government seems likely to hasten rather than retard this demolition derby.  The U.S. is probably in third place but moving up fast--the failure of these talks will probably keep the sluggish economy barely above stall range but the oncoming Obamacare debacle will start dragging the U.S. economy into stall speed as 2014 approaches.  China is a cipher with a massive real estate bubble and significant exposure to external economic risk due to the export driven economy.  However, like the Japanese, the Chinese have massive foreign exchanges that may delay the fatal blow for a while.  Make them fourth in line toward the black hole.  Regarding India, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Russia, OPEC, and the like, as the economies of the EU and US go, they will follow. Trade shrivels when importing countries can't afford or doesn't demand imported goods.

At this point, people need to seriously prepare for economic disruptions, just like preparing for hurricanes and the like.  I am betting that total societal collapse is unlikely but stagnation and decline with increased disorder is highly possible.  For pointers, read good economic and social histories of Argentina to get an idea of what may be coming economically and politically.

Sometimes, when you're the poodle party, you have to do things like raise taxes that you know won't work for the express purpose of making the opposition party look as hapless and incompetent as they are. At this point, the only thing that will save this country is an excess of Democratic incompetence.

Go over to IBD editorials, I read one there yesterday, in the special series, about how Obama's education was paid, it was speculation but does make sense.

275 @188, it's called "commodities". Indians still get them. Back before food stamps, you got brown bags full of basic food, canned meat and veggies, powdered milk and butter. They even had little booklets on how to make meals out of this stuff. It did involve cooking. Many people traded the stuff they didn't want to eat for other things. Then the grocers decided it would be really nice to get a cut of that federal money and the food stamp program was born. That's why you will not see it cut. It provides profits for the corporations that make packaged food and run grocery stores. It's the reason that they allowed EBT to be used for things like pizza.
