BREAKING: Muslim Brotherhood Candidate Wins Egyptian Presidency
— DrewM

So...that's swell.

Stand by for more.

Egyptians had two bad options and they took one. Of course there's no Parliament or constitution so the military is still running the show to a very significant degree. Still, it shows the direction the people of Egypt want to go in and this is the beginning not the end of the Muslim Brotherhood's push for control.

I guess they and Syria didn't get the memo that we are pivoting to Asia and China.

Wouldn't want to be a Coptic Christian in Egypt today.

Non-expert opinion: The military is trying to hold sway over things as long as they can and try and co-opt the Brotherhood. The reality is, revolutionary movements like the Brotherhood don't see elections as a charge to govern but an opportunity to increase power. Morsi will sound conciliatory and such but will leverage this victory to increase pressure on the military and to exercise greater control than whatever formal power he winds up.

Lots of optimistic talk among the usual suspects on CNN...the Muslim Brotherhood will be different or something. Personally, I think they've stood for things for decades, it seems insanely naive to think that they will suddenly moderate in victory.

It has been my experience with Arabs that what they say and what they do are often very different things.

But if there are enough MB sympathizers among the military, I suppose it could happen. Not sure how Mubarak could have held power so long if that's true, though. But then, they see what happened to him.....

Already been at it in Indonesia for awhile, as well as destroying the beautiful, ancient Hindu temples which were being painstakingly restored there. I feel sorry for the Coptics, too. I realize that's the conventional wisdom, and I wish I could agree.

But when the Egyptian Muzzie mobs, equipped with the latest U.S. military hardware, start pouring across the border, not caring if they as individuals live or die, Israel will have its back jammed up against the wall.

The last time Egypt went toe-to-toe with the Israelis, Israel at least had Nixon, who put them some additional supplies to turn the tide. This time, Israel has Bark Obama and Hitlery Clinton, neither of whom could be trusted to piss on a Jew if he was on fire.

Worse, given the current situation, I can see a number of Arab countries wanting a piece of this deal. They have U.S. equipment, too, and know damn well that the worst they have to fear from us is a Strong Statement from Bark Obama's Press Secretary.

Yes, I am being optimistic, but the MB hasn't demonstrated any skill at doing anything other than firing up the mob. We'll see what the generals are willing to do to keep power. They are a cutthroat bunch, and won't blink at killing.

And...which countries have the capability to get a piece of Israel?
Jordan? No.
Lebanon? No.
Syria? No.

Saudi Arabia wants Israel around as a balance against Iran. So they are out too.

106 Egypt has runaway inflation, no large oil reserves, and 90 million mouths to feed

See, this is my only hope: that a couple years with this going on and the Brotherhood in power will cause their popularity to drop dramatically.  Of course, that only makes a difference if there are future open elections...

107 Wow... the "kinder, gentler" Muslim Brotherhood wins in Egypt!  Well, don't be suprised if Israel is at war again in the region in the next 12-18 months because the "Bros" feel that they are "looking out for the best interests" of their Palestinian "brothers and sisters"...

How's that "smart diplomacy" working for you now, Barry, Joe and Hillary???

Apart from Israel, the Mid-East has been a damaged place before Obaka and will continue to be. Obaka's aggressive ignorance notwithstanding, a lot of the 'Arub Sprung' was just waiting to happen. Mubarak was sick, the MB was already entrenched in Egypt, Gadafi would not have lasted more than a few years, Tunisia ... well, who cares.

The Mid-East has always been a clusterfart of immense proportions. Obaka's tenure certainly did not help matters but all that could have been done was to delay the coming storm.

124 @ nevergiveup and CBD -- you dudes are more optimistic than I am. Yes, in a true military action the Israelis would clean the Egyptians' clocks, and with ease.

But this would/will be a "war" like Israel has never seen when the Muzzies get all stoned on their hate weed and start making mass suicide runs with something far more dangerous than rocks or shoulder-fired weapons.

Likewise, I agree the other countries mentioned wouldn't get involved singly. As a group, I can see them giving it a try. Likewise, I think the Saudis would rather clear Israel out of the way, no matter what they say. After all, they were our Big Buddyroos after 9/11 too, which, oh, no, they had nothing to do with at all.

At heart, they're all antisemitic bastards who will kill anyone and anything to further their little pedophilic, hateful god's "religion of pieces."

165 "I wouldn't class Egyptian men as fucking human."
--

Egyptian men include Omar Sharif (born Michel Demitri Shalhoub, Coptic; converted to Islam as an adult years after his acting career flourished).

George Noory's family immigrated from Egypt.

It was the Egyptian men who originally determined to sign a peace treaty with Israel before any other Muslim and/or Arab nation would. And for proving his desire for peaceful coexistence, in 1970 Sadat paid with his life, while "The Blind Sheik" assassin  is still alive in Butner, NC prison. Sadat's VP Mubarak honored that peace all these years.

Fucking human? Gang rape happens around the world, including the USA. In a mob, regardless of where, mob mentality is what it is. In a war, regardless of where you're from, if you're simply observing, then don't put yourself in defiant jeopardy, in the line of fire, challenging the fighters, expecting fighters to respect your right to film them, expecting fighters to ignore you filming them. It's one thing to observe. Quite another to make a battle that isn't even yours "all about you" because, after all, reporters are so much more important than everyone else, don't you know. No one is an insulated and untouchable island when in the midst of the fray, "crashing the party" making herself an open target for take down in their fight. Learn accurately how to WRITE vividly what you see for the record, for publication.

Where does anyone come off acting surprised that the Muslim Brotherhood won the election in Egypt? The obvious outcome was the plan when arming and training the revolutionaries to "destabilize" the former regime in the so-called Arab Spring. Now it's hand wringing time? pfft. If you really didn't see this coming, your mind was closed. /my opinion, anyway.

No wait, he knew the pattern - and chose to ignore it. I want to pound my head into the wall over the sheer insanity. How did this intelligent man turn into a blind media drone?
