Breaking: People Who Are Constantly Online May Develop Mental Disorders
— Ace

This would be a follow-up to that anti-semitic article from Tablet.

“High quantitative use was a central link between computer use and stress, sleep disturbances, and depression, described by the young adults,” Thomee said in the study. “It was easy to spend more time than planned at the computer (e.g., working, gaming, or chatting), and this tended to lead to time pressure, neglect of other activities and personal needs (such as social interaction, sleep, physical activity), as well as bad ergonomics, and mental overload.”

The study found a correlation between stress and always being available on the phone.

“Demands for availability originated not only from work and the social network, but also from the individual’s own ambitions or desires. This resulted in disturbances when busy or resting, the feeling of never being free, and difficulties separating work and private life,” Thomee explained in the study. “Unreturned calls or messages led to overload and feelings of guilt.”

Right, I think people have a bad case of that last bit. The "I've Always Got To Be Connected To the Machine" syndrome. (Not me, though! As you can see from my dereliction of duty on weekends.)

On sleep disorder:

I find that the computer screen is inherently stimulating, whether it's the light or the pattern of eye movements when using it. I've found that I personally can't sleep for at least 90 minutes or more after I turn off the computer -- so if I want to go to sleep by 1 am, I'd better turn off the computer by 11:00 or 11:30.

Anyone else find that? When I started shifting to Kindle at night (or TV -- but TV with, get this, no multitasking on the computer), I found it wasn't as hard to fall asleep when I went to bed.

27 Quote from Romney speech in PA today vie Legal Insurrection. ItÂ’s well worth watching this clip, especially at the 3:44 mark where the crowd erupts in applause and cheering at RomneyÂ’s defense of American values: What the president said was both startling and revealing. I find it extraordinary that a philosophy of that nature would be spoken by a president of the United States. It goes to something IÂ’ve spoken about from the beginning of the campaign. That this election is to a great degree about the soul of America. Do we believe in an America that is great because of government, or do we believe in an America that is great because of free people allowed to pursue their dreams and build their future?

53 I don't think it's the computer screen, It's probably just that your mind is more active.  If I'm working on a huge project, I could work 14 hours straight on it, come home physically exhausted and still not fall asleep. I find myself continuing the work in my head. Funny how the mind works.
Try falling asleep after playing Tetris for an hour, almost impossible, you'll be laying in bed trying to line up boxes.

59 I'd aim the arrow of causality the other way -- people prone to mental disorders may be attracted to being online all the time.

I feel no obligation to answer a phone when it rings - I screen calls with a physical answering machine all the time.  If its someone I want to talk to, then I'll pick up as they're leaving a message or call them right back with some excuse about being caught in the loo or garage and not able to make it to the phone so they don't think I'm screening calls.

Yes.  In fact, I find I'm pretty sensitive to light in general.  After 10pm, I have to turn the lights lower if I want to get to sleep on time.

Reading helps.  Unlike you with your eink Kindle, I use a backlit screen (Nook Color).  The advantage is, I can read with the lights off (and the background set to black).  Reading a book at night definitely helps with insomnia.

81 Repost : Butt-Shot Bad Guy after getting shot at internet cafe: Hours after his release from the hospital, Henderson, who talked about the pain he feels in his buttock and hip, said the plan was to "barge in, get the money and leave." He said "he never expected anyone to be armed." "The gun was broken and rusty and wasn't loaded. Nobody was going to get hurt," he said, standing with crutches. Retrieving the customers' phones was what he said was their "main priority." That way, he said, the customers could not call law enforcement officials. Henderson theorizes the reason why he was caught off guard is because, when Dawkins entered the business, he busted a computer monitor with the baseball bat and "glass got into his face." "He couldn't warn me," Henderson said. With the glass temporarily blinding his friend, Henderson noticed two women were behind the counter and he thought that was "fishy." Turning around to see what the women were doing, Henderson said he was shot. "I turned around to run and my leg gave out. That was when I got shot. I hit the ground, and he was still shooting. I thought I was going to die," Henderson said. Henderson said that, "by the grace of God," his "leg came back." "I ran," he said. Henderson said he and Dawkins drove to a house to see a woman he said "is like a second mother" to him. At the Marion Oaks residence in the 13000 block of Southwest 47th Terrace, deputies found what they believe was the getaway vehicle, a four-door black Nissan Sentra. The car was towed to the Sheriff's Office for processing. "I couldn't breathe. I had lost so much blood. I don't know what she did, but she revived me," he said, likening the experience to coming back from the dead. .... Though Henderson said he doesn't blame Williams for shooting, he takes exception with Williams shooting at him while he was down. "I was down, and I'm not going to continue to shoot you," he said.

I think it maybe it has something to do with the sleep patterns you develop early in life....

I grew up reading a book, with the radio on beside my bed....and would fall asleep with the light on, radio blaring.

Later, when I had a tv in my dormroom....I'd fall asleep with that on, studying.

Since then, I still to this day, sleep better with the tv on in the bedroom.

So maybe that's why....light stimulus + reading....triggers a sleep stimulus for me.

I dunno....it's like that's what I have 'conditioned' myself for.

Then Matthews went on this unbelievable rant, professing his love for the “perfect” Obama who has “never done anything wrong”: “I want to start with Congressman Ellison. You’ve been victim yourself of some of this crapola, but this crazy yahoo talk, do you think the people who push this stuff, this malarkey over and over again the guy’s somehow — this guy’s done everything right. He’s raised his family right. He’s fought his way all the way to the top of the Harvard Law Review, in a blind test becomes head of the Review, the top editor there.” “Everything he’s done is clean as a whistle. He’s never not only broken any law, he’s never done anything wrong. He’s the perfect father, the perfect husband, the perfect American. And all they do is trash the guy. And it’s impossible for me to believe they would have said the same thing about a Walter Mondale or a Jimmy Carter or a Bill Clinton. There’s an ethnic piece to this. It’s very hard to nail it down because they always cover it in ideology. But I’ve never heard anybody in this country call its opponent regularly anti-American or non-American.”

180 For almost ten years I had a terrible sleep pattern, often I would be up all night until light then couldn't fall asleep so would stay up until evening.. basically I was constantly fighting having a 25-27hr sleep schedule into a 24 hr world.  Everyday I would wake up an hour or two later then the day before regardless of day/night.

About a year ago I started turning off all the screens/lights 1+ hours before bedtime and listening audiobooks on my mp3 player.  With it rockboxed I have set to autosleep if I dont touch any buttons for 20 minutes and it picks up where it leaves off.  I have blown through sooo many wonderful books and my sleep schedule has been normal ever since.  Without taking a single pill.

Also regarding eye strain, with big tv's have the light balanced behind the screen and balance it.  I bought a 3 hologen light strip from home depot and put dimmable LED bulbs in it.  The thing uses only 15 watts on full and the behind the screen lighting looks professional like a movie theater.  This did wonders for how often I was getting migraines.

1) Obtain ordinary ethanol from anywhere and put it in your mixes.
2) Get some clown in Brazil to certify that the ethanol you have in possession was "cellulosic" and came from their Brazilian plant.

Problem solved.  Ethanol is a very simple molecule, there won't be any way to tell cellulosic from otherwise chemically.

316 Posted by: ErikW at July 17, 2012 09:59 PM (j8AQC) For a roux, practice like this: Dice onions and green bell pepper. Heat a pot w/ about 1/4-1/2 cup of oil, veg or peanut. start frying the onion and bellpepper in the pot until they lose the raw look, but aren't brown yet. Throw whatever seasoning you want, but I recommend chili garlic sauce (found in the asian section). Then your meat of choice, let that brown some, then throw some progresso bread crumbs (I like progresso garlic and herb, start with about a palm full). Brown until ready then throw a can of tomato sauce + water full of tomato sauce. Let it boil then bring to simmer. After you get that a couple of times, then do the onions, bell peppers, and oil. Minus all the other stuff. substitute the bread crumbs for flour, you will find out real quick that you gotta keep adding oil (not flour) to keep it browning till your desired preference, do not attempt a black roux until a year or so of practice.

354 I think different age groups have different experiences with the computer.  If you were on the computer early in grade school and you've lived with electronic devices all of your life you've learned, like you've learned in other ways, to put the devices in perspective.  But, you use said devices to socialize much like my gram used the telephone.  And to game.  So you have a different view of them.  Plus, if you are an addictive personality, you'll become addicted to anything even the kindle and even tv programs, like some are addicted to soap operas.  I asked around, so far not one person has problems sleeping but most people are working long long days, for little pay, trying to carve out a career so maybe they aren't the best test group.

Posted by: question at July 17, 2012 07:39 PM (oZfic)

355 Finally, a topic I actually get paid to know about! If anyone is curious...

It's the blue component of the light, which is particularly strongly represented in LCD illumination that causes such decoupling of the light-dark cycle.

Specifically, there is a centralized master circadian pacemaker in a more ancient part of your brain called the superchiasmatic nucleus (SCN) that acts like a master clock for body functions, gene regulation, etc. But since biology isn't that precise, because animals are mobile and due to seasonal variations you need a way to synchronize this pacemaker with an external signal to keep the internal time mapped to the external world. The way this works is your eyes actually have some blue-light sensitive neurons (not rods and cones!) that signal when there is blue spectrum light which is what you see due to the atmospheric scattering from the rising and setting sun. So, SCN activity is then synchronized with sunrise (excitation during the bright day) and sunset (inhibited during the dark night). The SCN's output then controls melatonin production.

Especially in today's world, with LCD laptops and TVs, Ace-of-spades, the whole light synchronization thing is pretty messy. There is a HUGE difference between seasonal light levels (dark by 8pm) and artificially starring at 5K lumen LCDs with strong blue component until 2 or 3am!

Technology has decoupled us from the natural world significantly. Our subjective self, our brain, can adapt ('cultural' evolution is quick) -- but the body can not, we're stuck with the same biology.

The mind is willing, the body is not...

Selena Zito said the crowd was really energized and a very large crowd and that he spoke with no notes or tele prompter, but off the cuff...

360 Generally, minimize exposure to bright artificial lights with strong blue components close to bed time.

What Ace said: less computer, more reading a book or eink before bed. Realistically, it's f-ing hard with life and work.

I've recently heard of this program (http://stereopsis.com/flux/) that's suppose to change the tint of your monitor by time of day; haven't seen any empirical data though.

Small dosages of melatonin (1mg or less) taken an hour or so before bed have been shown to help via decoupling the increased level of artificial light from inhibiting endogenous melatonin production (mt makes us sleepy), but results are somewhat individual dependent.

Extreme cases, including some percentage of people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), major depression or bi-polar disorder use filtered glasses before bed (http://tinyurl.com/4kqn6o5) and will use light-boxes in the morning.

thanks for this.  I have a very good friend from college who is a computer engineer.  He sometimes spends hours and hours inside in front of the computer.  I just sent him your two posts and a link to ace's post and recommended he read everything.

The happiest person I know is getting a PHD in plants...its botany but with a high tech name.  I always think he's so happy cause he spends so much time outdoors talking to his plants and caring for them.  His hero is the guy who crossed and perfected the knock out rose....

362 "Sarah Palin Does Not Deserve to Speak at the Republican Convention"  http://tiny.cc/vymmhw

This is being tweeted a lot tonight.  The other night it was the article about romney being petty and not wanting palin at the convention.  But this next link is also being tweeted a lot:  "McCain: Sarah Palin was “better candidate” than Romney, others"  http://tiny.cc/q3mmhw

Oh and the libs/dems tonight are going nuts over a report that romney paid no taxes in 2009.  Which based on the return he already revealed would be patently absurd no matter how good your tax lawyers and accountants are.  None the less, they think that baingate is such a big deal and the no taxes paid in 2009 is so credible that they are beside themselves with joy predicting that romney will withdraw from the race rather than show his taxes.  Either way, I still don't think he should show them anything.  America is watching, romney should stick to his guns.  reagan only released one year, at least he's giving them two, they should be content with that and either come out with their "proof" of something wrong or felonous as they say or just be quiet.

364 Ace, your experience with not being able to sleep for 90 minutes after walking away from your computer is likely to be based on your body's melatonin cycle and melatonin production. Melatonin is a hormone that increases around 9 pm and makes you drowsy, but its production is suppressed by light. Since your computer monitor is a bright light, if you (or anyone) are using the computer after 9 pm you (or anyone) will have trouble sleeping because the light suppressed your melatonin. Similarly, if you really want to wake up in the morning, you need to go out in the sunshine so you see actual sunlight, which reduces your melatonin levels. By the way, the people who are congratulating themselves that they can use a computer late in the evening and go straight to sleep afterwards -- melatonin be darned -- do not have miraculous abilities. Rather, they need to know that this is a symptom of being extremely sleep-deprived. Either they have very bad sleep habits and deprive themselves of adequate sleep on purpose or they have a sleep disorder and need to see a sleep specialist about it right away -- not just to sleep better and have a happier, more productive life, but to save their lives. P.S. I am well aware of the irony that I am writing this sage advice at midnight. My father is 96 and in pain due to an infected molar -- I stayed up to monitor him and am about to go to bed since he seems settled now.
